    Steristrips

Had to share this! Went to see my surgeon for follow up today and as he is examining my belly I hear and feel this rrrriiiiippppp! He pulled the steri-strips off!!!!! Shocked the heck out of me and it kinda smarted a bit, I had to laugh after though because of this thread. I did learn something valuable Once they come off get that sticky residue off of your skin ASAP. I left the docs office and went home. Shortly thereafter I went to adjust my running pants and......they were STUCK TO MY INCISIONS! Yowzah!

    My Hair!!!!????

I am a hairstylist and I also teach cosmetology. You need to get at least 80 grams of protien in so that you will not loose your hair. I have seen this with a few of my clients. I will tell you in the spring some people seem to loose a lot of hair. Almost like an animal loosing it winter pelt. And some people seem to loose a lot of hair in the fall. I am one of those people. Another thing you can do is massage your head really well for at least 5 mins every day. That will bring the blood flow to your scalp and the papilla which is the mother of your hair bulb. Will be able to feed better.

    Problems with tummy sag?

have u asked ur insurance about covering a panniculectomy???? a panniculectomy and a tummy tuck are 2 different procedures and insurance will usually cover a panni...which is the removal of the excess saggy skin...but there is no pulling of the muscles or tucking...i recently had a panniculectomy and a mini tuck...and so far i'm very happy with the results...exercise may or may not help...due to ur age unfortunately u may not b able to tighten that skin up with exercise...i exercise my butt off and it made no difference when it came to the saggy skin...it had to be surgically removed...do not b discouraged from exercising...bcuz it has done wonders with other other parts of my body and does increase loss and inches...but truth be told for SOME people u can exercise till ur blue in the face...that saggy skin is going to stay saggy...i have pics posted of what my panniculectomy and mini tuck look like..if ur interested...

Practical Immediate After Surgery Activity Question

How would you be getting to your vacation? My doctor told me not to fly for 3 months... I also know someone who went from NC to NY a week or two after surgery and ended up having to go in the hospital due to ulcers. A vacation that soon after surgery probably isn't a good idea on many levels it took me 7-10 days to adjust between the hospital and at home and I wasn't able to walk comfortably in the heat due to not getting in enough fluids... Dehydration may also be a risk. It's up to you but to me it's not worth the risk of all the possible complications... and I am usually all for letting loose and having fun!

    Problems with tummy sag?

i also wanted to mention that u do not necessarily need to have rashes and skin disorders in order for ur insurance to cover a panniculectomy...eventually that weight of the excess skin will start giving you back problems and enable u to fully exercise...i looked at ur ticker with the amount of weight u want to lose...im 99.9% sure u will need some type of plastic surgery...i am 30 years old and have lost about 140 pounds...i weight in 2morrow when i get my stitches taken out...i dont want to get u down...but i dont want to sugar coat it either...even when i had my apron of excess skin i was still much happier at 160 pounds than i was at 296. i wouldnt worry about it now... ask ur band surgeon to refer u to a plastic surgeon when ur about 10 pounds from goal and mention to the plastic surgeon that u want to go through insurance...they r usually very helpful...and skin tighten creams do not get rid of pounds of extra skin...thats a myth...lol
  10. Ty chunky .. love the name I am in the UK and we dont have the same system as the US so our National Health Service may or may not cover removal of the skin, in some cases they will remove skin if there is a 'medical' need but otherwise it is regarded as 'cosmetic' . Each Health trust in the Uk covers a certain geographical area and the rules concerning skin removal are different depending on where you live. So its a lottery really my area 'may' do it but only after 2 yrs post op and a maintained wieght loss. I may go down that route if its too expensive privately and i have to explore other options. I was pre-op on a 600 calorie a day diet to get my BMI down, I lost around 40lbs from November 2010 to January 2011 when i was banded. Weight loss is slowing down now so these last lbs may take a while

    Need advice

I have some questions for my surgeries. I have a lot of loose skin as I went from 285 to 180 pounds (but am 200 pounds right now). The worst area by far is the inner thighs, but I also have a good amount on my stomach and i have moobs. So the surgeries I want are: thigh lift, tummy tuck, chest reconstruction. I got 2 different quotes from Dr. Galvez in Tijuana: Thigh lift only is $4250 with $1200 hospital fees and if I want to get all 3 surgeries done its $8050 with $1400 hospital fees. I want to get the 3 surgeries done since its only an extra 4k. What im asking is are there cheaper doctors out there or is Dr Galvez in Tijuana the cheapest? Is Tijuana the cheapest place to get these surgeries or is there a better option? I will be needing a loan so what company would you suggest since CareCredit doesn't work in Mexico.

    Stuck on egg?

A few wks ago, I was was stuck on hot dog skin. and I felt miserable. I was hours away from home on a camping trip. When I spoke with my surgeon, he suggested that I take 1 table spoon of cooking oil and follow it with sips of hot tea. After doing this, I immediately felt better. Like in 2 minutes. My Dr had said, if I didnt feel better I should come to the hospital, but I felt better. The cooking oil was very nasty, but I followed the instructions and felt better. Hope this helps.

    Scarring?

Aside from the medications that are out there, my dermatologist had me put vasalene,(I so mis-spelled that) on anytime she would cut or take a sample from my skin and put a couple stitches in it while it was healing. She said it was the best thing to help with scarring. It worked for me, but I'd ask your Dr. first. Now if there already healed the only thing I know is the over the counter meds. I don't know any names. But it doesn't sound like from the other post that there is bad scarring.. I personally don't know I have not been banded yet I have 3 wks. But I have been cut on and the vasalene helped. Best of luck

    Scarring?

Hi guys... I think aside from the actual surgery, I am most scared about possible scarring. My skin is prone to developing scar tissue pretty easily... Any advice on how I can treat the incisions to avoid permanent scarring? My doctor said he can probably perform the operation via one incision through the naval, but since I have a hiatal hernia that needs fixing, he may have to do multiple incisions.

    Staples

@@Band07 @aelovelady Each surgeon is different I had staples used to close the port sites (external). Just like I had staples when I had both C-Sections. @Allenby I think at 22 days you may run the risk of the skin healing to the staples. I would definitely call and ask to have them out sooner. Most of mine sutures were healed by the 10 day mark (my appt was moved up because the doc had a schedule change) they were intially going to be removed at 13 days. I would think by 15 you would be well healed. As for scarring there is a product called Mederma that works pretty well on reducing the appearance of scars. You can start applying it once the staples are out and the wound is completely closed. It takes a few months (2x/day) but it does work. I used it following a knee surgery I had years ago and I'm currently using it on my scars and my daughter's scar under her chin.
  16. My weight loss on the scale is slow, but my body seems to be changing. It was nice to see a change. I just have to be patient. Sent from my XT1650 using the BariatricPal App Loosing my grandmother was horrible, but not sudden...she was 95. I will miss her horribly, but my change in size would have made her happy. I know it was weird to be happy looking for funeral dresses. Sent from my XT1650 using the BariatricPal App

    Shoe size shrunk?

I definitely noticed a change in my feet. I had some flats that were a tad uncomfortable and would rub on the knuckle part of my big toe. Wore them a couple months ago and they were so loose, that they flipped and flopped on my foot all day and created a nasty blister on my heel.
  18. I can't help but grin....we lost our grandmother recently. Her funeral is this weekend. I want to look my best for her, so I had to go shopping. I haven't bought a dress in 5yrs. I'm in my 7th week post op. I have seen some changes, but I am loosing weight slowly. I went to the dreaded store today and to my surprise, I am a 22. Not a 24 or 26. I am smaller!! I'm 6ft tall, so a 22 actually looked decent! I might have slow loss, but I have loss! Yay! Sorry, had to share with people who'd understand!???? Sent from my XT1650 using the BariatricPal App

    What...What Is This? Lol.

Hi! So this may sound like a stupid question but I just joined this site, forgive me. Is this section for dating as in like...dating-dating? Or is it more for advice for single WLS patients? Lol, again, sorry if this sounds stupid. If it's for advice, what have been people's general experiences with WLS and dating? Are people who haven't been through or are unfamiliar with it usually understanding when you explain it them? I'm thinking it's probably hit or miss like with anything else when it comes to dating. But still, a date may wonder why you're not eating this or that, etc. I'm afraid of looking weird when going out like when I have to ask for smaller portions or having to explain my dietary restrictions. Lol and admittedly, I'm also nervous about sex. While I've dated plenty, I've never actually had sex with anyone (gasps! LOL). I was always too uncomfortable or shy about how I looked as a heavy person. But now, I'm thinking I'm probably going to feel the same as a lighter person because of the expected loose skin. 😕 I've heard some pretty fierce horror stories from the support group I was attending at my WLS Center. From what I've gathered, dating isn't very successful and a lot people who were already married claimed their spouse couldn't be with them anymore because they became "too high maintenance" or jealous of their weight loss. Even our MODERATOR was telling us her husband cheated on her because he got too jealous of her weight loss and couldn't handle all the changes she had to make in her life because of it.

    Kaiser So. San Francisco ?

I had surgery 6 months after my orientation on June 6, 2007. My advice for you is to first get online and check for appointments on your Kaiser page. The only one that won't show up is the phsych appt. I didn't check to see if my actual surgery date showed up but they called me and trust me I didn't forget. LOL - That way you won't miss any appointments because of someone else's error. The second thing I would suggest is to be aware of what appointments you're supposed to have. You can then call on a regular basis and ask if they've had cancellations. They don't call people to try and fill those (except for surgery) so frequently they have them available. This should help you move along a little faster. Don't be rough on them, they are very overwhelmed. Loose the weight required NOW. They really like to work with people who get the job done because it demonstrates to them that you are willing to follow the program. As you have probably read on different pages, there is a vast difference in what doctors want from their patients. Kaisers attitude is "We don't have to work with the people who don't want to follow the program because we have so many people who are beating down our doors that are willing to follow it." Yeah, that's a quote. Other than that, remind yourself of how much you're saving by having insurance. There are so many people out there that aren't as lucky as we are. It's a pain to have to wait but it's worth it in the end. PM me if you have any questions I can answer or just ask on the forum and there are several people who can help you. Good luck on your journey. Vicki
  21. I’m one week out from surgery and my husband and best friend are making menhavwbsecond thoughts. They have no idea they both agree. My husband says I’ve had enough surgeries during my lifetime from car accidents and complications post car accident. I’ve also have a history of sepsis (infection) every time I get opens up for surgery. He know what I went through with all that.ni think he’s just afraid of what could happen or me not pulling through this time ans my friend said likewise. I really and and nee this surgery but now I feel like I’m second guessing myself. My initial plan was to have the sleev but the doctor takes me into duodenal switch because it’s less likely for weight gain. I agreed but also has second thoughts about that particular lad surgery just because of all the additional nutrients you malabsorption va the other surgeries. In my head I was also think duodenal would allow me to lose weight faster than the sleeve. Then again i don’t want to loose too much I don’t want to be looking too skinny from excessive weight lost from duodenal (CW 232 GW 150-160). Although not reversible the sleeve is less invasive and not switching around parts. Then again I’ve had a gastric ballon (obera ballon) and maybe lost 10 pound at most so that was also my reasoning for wanting duodenal switch more aggressive than sleeve as to me the obera balloonMimics restriction just like sleeve but it’s temporary. As you can see I’m a week out from surgery and all over the place. HELP!!! Has anyone that is slightly obese or obese who has extremely hard time losing weight even with diet or excercise had success from the sleeve? How fast did you lose weight?

    Where are the happy bandsters?

I'm almost 7 weeks post op now. I love my band, and though I would really like to lose a little faster, 23 hours and 59 minutes of the day I'm thankful (the other minute is when I step on the scale and either jump for joy or swear...my husband finds the whole morning ritual hilarious now ) But before my band I had stopped weighing, because I felt there was no hope of having the "jump for joy" moments. Just like life, everything isn't smooth sailing. I've had a pretty smooth ride so far and I'm thankful. But I really like knowing that when the going gets rough, I have this group of friends to come to. I feel like I can tell them anything and I'll get things spelled out for me or the support i need. For instance, I've already had a week and half where I lost nothing. I came here and started moaning and groaning....did these ladies let me get by with that...heck no. They told me to get real....look at how far I've come and be realistic. They also told me to stay off the scale (still working on that one) But the point is...they cared enough to tell me lighten up and not stresss about it, and they were right, I started loosing again. I find it very telling to read a lap band board and then go read a Rny board. You will find problems both places....but the difference is the problems here for the most part can be treated. And even those that are going through tough times right now, and are having their bands removed are going to be returning to full health and can either reband later or try other options if they wish...because they still have all the options open to them. So add me to the happy bandster list. Melissa

    Loose Skin

I am only one week post op and all I can think about is my loose skin I will probably get. I hope I don't get a lot of it because I really don't want another surgery. Has anyone not had it removed? Does it cause you problems?
