Anyone 60yrs. or over and have all comorbidities
TinDE replied to ebonymc's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'm 59 and having a bypass in 3 weeks. I just have HTN and apparently now I have sleep apnea, but there is a strong family history of diabetes and heart problems. I do have issues with reflux and Barrett's esophagus so that's why I'm getting the bypass. -

Anyone else with a surgery date of 4/20/17?
shy1 replied to shy1's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I just found out about 2 hours ago and I've gone from excited to scared to anxious in that short amount of time. LOL! It does not seem real yet. I am planning to get organized this week. I have to make a shopping list, get things in order at work and home with my kids. I'm hoping the distraction will help with my nerves. Can I ask why you are going from the Sleeve to bypass? I considered both but my dr thought the Sleeve was good for me. -
Get a grip!! As a former chef, wife of a chef, mother of a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America, and member of a whole family of terrific cooks, get your priorities in order! If you keep doing the things you always did, you will keep looking and feeling like you always do. Now's the time to take care of your problem. With the band your whole mindset will change. But it will take a while. My journey began in November of 2006. It took at least 6 months before I was able to pass up the dishes that contributed to my 365 pound frame and not feel deprived. But I did it. I'm still doing it. To date I'm down 115 pounds and still have a ways to go, but I'll get there. Stick with it. You can do it too. Work with your band. It's a wonderful tool. And good luck to you!

My husband had RNY bypass surgery in 2000. Last two blood tests (2x per year) he has low Hemoglobin and Low Hemocrit. Web says that is low anemia. Doctor put him on Ferrous Sulfate 65Mg 1x per day and B12 injections 2x per month. Blood test now she his high on B12 and 1 point over high end of scale on Iron. But, still has no energy. He is even taking Vitamin D3 supplementation. His thyroid is low.. close to hyper they say. I wonder if this may have anything to do with it and should he see an endocrinologist? Or Is it possible he could have a gastric bleed? He takes allot of pain reliever for back pain as he has had 3 back surgeries. Just trying to figure this out.

New member researching if the surgery is right for me
yentacafe replied to yentacafe's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
thanks for your response. I see this forum is about the lapband. Is their a similar forum for gastric bypass surgery? -
I had bypass surgery on the 13th. Friday and Saturday I only got about 40oz of fluids in. Today I got 20oz of protein shake down, 8oz of broth and about 8oz of water down already and it's only 3:30pm. My stomach feels like it's contracting and making noise like it would before the surgery if I haven't eaten all day. Has anyone else experienced this? I feel hungry but I don't know if my stomach is telling me it wants food or if it's full.

Best Calcium chews after bypass surgery
Michele 2021 posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hi everyone I’m curious to know what everyone is using for calcium supplements after having gastric bypass surgery. I am three months postop doing very well but had been using Caltrate chews until they recently discontinued them after further research I found that the calcium carbonate was not a good choice and that the calcium citrate is recommended so I ordered some chewables on the BariatricPal website my dietitian said I will never be able to take calcium in the capsule form again after a bypass and I’m curious if others were told the same thing. I understand we cannot take any kind of calcium gummy’s either. These calcium chews are the way too expensive to keep purchasing long term so I hope in the future to be able to find something much cheaper and would love to hear others feedback on the subject thanks in advance!! -
I have not as I'm having my bypass Tuesday but wanted to say I hate to hear of all of your troubles and hope that you heal and it'll get better from here on out . Do they know how you got an ulcer so early out ?

I had been banded in 2009 as well. Had it out Jan.2017. Then had the bypass May 22, 2017. At this time I really feel no different. I am very glad I did the bypass. I have had no dumping and feel great. Weight is very slow coming off but I'm in for the long haul. SO glad the band is out! Sent from my SM-G950U using BariatricPal mobile app

I have Aetna Choice POS II and it paid for everything connected to my bypass three years ago (aside from my annual deductible). They did require six months of a structured weight loss program. I had finished one six months earlier (a last-ditch effort to lose weight), and they counted it even though it wasn't right before surgery. I would also note that Aetna turned me down the first time and my surgeon had to call them directly before they finally approved me. Good luck. It's worth it, no matter how long it takes to get approved!

You're welcome! I had gastric banding in June 2009, and had it removed last year June. I realized that I wanted to get another WLS in May 2022. So, I called Aetna to see what my out of pocket expense would be. When I had my band removed last year, my total out of pocket cost was $50. I'm not sure the final cost for this surgery, as it will be based on the # of days I will stay at the hospital. I want to get the gastric sleeve, but not sure. My surgeon may recommend gastric bypass, due to the issues I had with the band. I still have concerns about that---I don't know how I feel about rerouting! I chose the same surgeon who did my gastric banding. I set up the appointment in May and I've been completing all of the necessary clearances and pre-op items.

Gastric bypass and hiatal hernia repair 27th april
Flab-U-Less Forever replied to Merill's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I had gastric bypass on March 3 with a hiatal hernia repair. I knew I had heartburn issues for a long time but didn't realize until my pre op testing that it was due to a hiatal hernia. They had called it small but when my surgeon was in there doing my bypass she said it was quite large and took a long time to fix it. My stomach fundus got slightly damaged during the hernia fix so they removed a portion of it which is fine with me...less gherlin producing cells in my body. I have had no issues with GERD since surgery. I am so happy to NOT wake up in the middle of the night with stomach acid in my mouth!!! -
Denise, have you tried the 100 calorie microwave bags of popcorn? About the only food I can't tolerate is pasta. It's strange that I can eat a huge salad without difficulty but pasta will NOT stay down no matter how much I chew or what kind of pasta it is. Interestingly, I can keep rice down without difficulty. Most people can do "junk" food without any problems. My surgeon warned me about that on the first meeting. He suggests the bypass for junk food eaters and lapband for high volume eaters.

I am three weeks post op and so hungry I feel like my stomach is eating itself! I met with my nutritionist a week ago and they said I could increase my calories to 600-800 daily if I feel I need to. They recommend 400-600 calories a day for the first 6 weeks after surgery. I understood going into this that it is not going to be an easy ride, but dang! Ive started on the purée stage and can eat tuna, canned chicken, refried Beans, cottage cheese, etc. don't get me wrong, I'm super excited to hit this stage, but to keep my calories in the 600 range, my portions are tiny and I never feel satisfied. I'm hungry an hour after eating. My surgeon told me that once the swelling went down, I'd be hungry since the band is empty. I'm eating to live, not living to eat any longer. I was hoping I'd be one of those lucky ones that feel restriction without a fill. Unfortunately my doctors office will not do the first fill until 8 weeks after surgery.. That puts me at jan. 26. URGH!! I'm miserable and I still have another month and a half of this. I returned to work today and people asked if I'm still happy with my decision.. My response was mostly. I really didn't expect that I would be so miserable and hungry at this stage. I went through 2 full workups since I was at first denied by ins., 2 years of "training" and am totally blown away with how unhappy I am. Should I have gone with a bypass??? With everything I've been through medically, I wanted the least invasive wls I could get. I know what the end result is and this isn't a post to dis the band.. I know I made the best decision for me. After two heart surgeries, a blood clot in my lungs and dealing with osteoarthritis at only the age of 31, I'm looking forward to looking and feeling healthy again! And all these feelings I'm having now will all just be a bad memory!

Bandster Hell: Anyone in Heaven?
Tyanna replied to pandagirl's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I can't say I am in lapband heaven but I am not in lap hell either. It must be purgatory!!! lol I was banded 2 weeks ago so I am not an expert but I have not been hungery soup and high protien liquid fill me up. I have lost about 15 lb in the last 6 weeks. I don't expect the weight to come of fast that is one of the reasons I chose the lap band. i want my skin to have the chance to shrink while I am losing weight. I don't want to have to have any unessary surgery to remove excess skin if I don't have to that is why i want to lose weight slowly one or two lb a week is fine with me. I didn't gain it overnight so I don't expect to lose it overnight either. I look at the band as a tool to help me succeed in my weightloss efforts. It is a tool to help keep me from cheating on my weightloss plan. So far so good. With gastric bypass you are forced to change your eating habits. If you are not commited to giveing up sugar and changing your eating habits you are not ready for either sugery. It is all up to you. I as so glad I was banded. Hope this helps in your decision. -
jOANNE, I have had two fills with Dr. Valin. The first was at 6 weeks and the second 8 weeks after that. Supposedly I am supposed to get another fill after another 8 weeks. However, I think I am a little too full and have a call into their office about taking some out. Dr. Valin is very careful and doesn't want people to be too full. I have also lost alot of weight and I know he takes everything into consideration when determining when to do fills and how much to do. By the way, most CT docs have huge waiting lists now (for Lapband or Gastric Bypass) so be patient.

No way I could even taste that stuff....even though I don't desire sweets, once in the mouth its hard to resist more. Yoda.....what I really meant was a trip to Orillia.....Rama was just an enticer. A friend and I are planning a trip to Rama in November, probably in the middle somewhere for an overnighter on a Sunday night...we should get together sometime over the Sunday/Monday. Carol

Happy to Help / Almost A yr Out Bandster
seriousaboutit replied to coltonwade's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
hii would just like to say that i am very impressed with your progress. I hope to achieve the same sucess once I am banded. I am currently awaiting tricare approval. I posted a message a few weeks ago talking about how I wasn't sure if I was getting the right surgery(I keep wondering if I should have applyed for gastric bypass). Only one person responded and she was very negative saying she had the same delima and ended up getting the lap band and was very unhappy. I just know that with a five year old and a one year old at my feet all the time the bypass would be to hard of a recovery for me. I really want to lose the weight. Im 5 2 and 216 pds. I would love to see the kind on results that you have seen I would love any advice you could give me. Thank you for keeping my hope alive. Gotta go my baby needs me. -
I had a drain. It was the bane of my existence because there is no medical tape that could secure tubing designed not to allow surgical tape to adhere to it. I tried them all. I finally threw caution to the wind and found the solution: Duct tape. Angels sang. By the time I went for my follow-op Doc had to get through layers of duct tape just to talk to me. Duct tape. I hear those angels sing every time I say it. If it doesn't move when it should: WD40. If it moves when it shouldn't: Duct tape. :angels singing: Most folks don't have a drain with their Gastric Bypass. But I recommend the duct tape for your surgical tape needs. Good luck, Tek
