Considering revision
scollins707 replied to Rachelm1985's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Are you in touch with your original surgeon? I started there, and my surgeon refused to help me. After that, I started reading about the revision options. I did a lot of reading and decided I wanted the DS, but the doctor I went to only does the SADI. Weight loss is slower than my original surgery, but that's expected. Check your insurance plan and see if there is any language regarding revisions. If your not in touch with your surgeon, I say look at the bariatric institute UTAH. My surgeon was Dr. Medlin. -
I had a gastric bypass the day before thanksgiving and there’s one area that is still hurting very bad to the point I can hardly stand up. I spoke with a nurse at my doctors office and she said that during the procedure my bowel had been knicked so they had to put in a “deep stitch”. Wondering if anyone else has experienced this

Hello! I am new to the forum but hoping to be more active. I have been considering a revision for quite some time now and would love people's opinions and possibly some experience with revisions. I am not sure if I want to have my gastric sleeve resized, have it converted into a DS or possibly have it converted into a RNY. For some backstory: I got the gastric sleeve almost 8 years ago and I feel like I did rather well, I lost roughly 100 lbs total. I maintained this weight loss for about 4 years doing extremely well. I then ended up getting pregnant with my daughter in 2017. I have medical conditions as well that makes weight loss extremely difficult too (I have PCOS and possibly hypothyroidism.) I ended up gaining back 60 lbs and for the life of me cannot lose it. I tried exercise, many different diets (low calorie/high protein, low carb, and keto with no luck. The only thing that seemed to work for me was the sleeve. I definitely want the surgery revised in some way but I am unsure how to proceed. Does anyone have any advice? It would be greatly appreciated, Thank you.

Yep, the emotional eating issue needs addressing before WLS. It seems to be a BIG reason why a lot of folks really struggle post-surgery. It's the thing that really trips folks up. You can't replace a coping mechanism with nothing. The surgery itself (at least for a bypass) helps you switch up your habits and re-learn a new normal through restriction and hunger reduction. My personal experience has been zero hunger and having to pretty much remember to eat, and I'm truly done in a couple of mouthfuls. Drinking protein water and regular water fills me up. A switch has definitely been flicked in me, and while I know my hunger will eventually return to a degree, the surgery is giving me the luxury of time to unlearn bad habits and embrace better ones. The big reason I always failed before surgery was self-sabotage. I'd get to almost where I wanted, then some event would trigger a binge and it would all fall apart. The surgery is going to stop that binge and help me stay the course. And I'm honestly finding a lot of joy in not caring about food like I did. I still *think* about food, because it's a habit of a lifetime, but I no longer care about it. Let me just say it's great that you're taking your time and weighing this up before leaping in. All your doubts and questions are important ones to consider.

If you have had bariatric surgery in Mexico. We want to hear from you!!
Vassarini replied to sxystacy's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
I had my RNY bypass at Mexican Bariatric Center in Tijuana and my surgeon was Dr. Rodriguez Lopez. My Nov 18 surgery went well, and I am recovering without issues back at home. Medical tourism is a huge business for Mexico — they said in our patient intro class that it’s about 5% of Mexico’s GDP. A driver met me and other patients/companions at the San Diego airport and transported us to the hotel in Tijuana (a Hyatt Place which was nice with an added plus of making GREAT chicken broth due to the number of bariatric patients who stay there). It took 35 minutes to drive there from San Diego airport, but about 3 hours to return due to the lines at the border. Due to covid protocols, the companions stayed at the hotel and weren’t able to visit anyone at the hospital (for that reason, I did not bring a companion). I was nervous about the flight home by myself (I had a connecting flight and although the surgery went well, it was still abdominal surgery), but I flew United and they were WONDERFUL in terms of arranging for transport and accommodating my situation. I had a hike out to long-term parking once I arrived at my home airport (didn’t think that one through), but simply took my time and rested several times. I had also worked with my PCP leading up to the surgery and have my first follow up visit tomorrow. I would also strongly encourage anyone who pursues WLS in Mexico to prearrange for local medical care. I get tons of information and nutritional advice from MBC, but obviously the support is digital only given the distance. I worked locally and my insurance would have covered it, but the normal wait time plus the covid-related delays and backlog meant I was looking at a one-to-two year delay. I’m 53 and simply decided it was worth the money to accelerate the process, especially after I had a gout flare up early this year. Like Sleeve_Me_Alone, this was the right choice for me and I have no regrets. I wish you well in your decision making! -

*Raises hand* I had gastric bypass on Nov 18, also in Mexico. Been feeling great since then except for some bouts of fatigue. I have a TOUGH time getting up in the morning (always have, but caffeine used to help). Check in with my local GP tomorrow and hoping to be cleared for more activity!

Water and Protein Intake
brandonco05 replied to skinnyqueen22's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I’m about a month and a half out from bypass and I haven’t had any issue drinking enough. I was expecting to feel an issue if I drink too much, or too fast but it’s been suspiciously easy. Hope I’m not hurting myself. -
Revision from sleeve to Rny bc of gerd
kimdlawson06 replied to Maria Castillo's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had a revision on 11/5 due to GERD and regain due to my thyroid. I noticed the difference immediately. However the past few days I noticed slight discomfort but nothing like before. I’m a little concerned because it’s been 3 weeks and I’m only down 13 pounds. -
Sleeve to Bypass 7 months post-op...still can't eat chicken/beef
OKC Revision posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Has anyone else experienced this? The majority of my protein is still protein shakes - seven months later and I still cannot eat poultry, beef, most shellfish or pork without needing to go throw up. The only real solid animal-based protein I can 'stomach' is steamed clams and some cured meat. Thanksgiving sucked because I made this amazing turkey and I took one bite and 10 minutes later had to excuse myself to go throw up! -
I had the sleeve in 2010 and didn't lose much and there were a couple of others at the hospital who didn't lose so 2021 and I've had the bypass on the 23rd August and 45lbs lighter and feeling good about my self and surgery⁰

Hi, I'm 3 weeks post-op (Mini gastric bypass) and I'm in need of some WLS buddies. I have a couple very supportive people and a handful of generally supportive people in my corner but I still feel pretty alone in this. My friends are happy when I'm excited about something and generally sympathetic at some of my struggles but it's not the same as someone who has or is going through it ya know? Someone who could be just as excited as I am when reintroducing a food back into your diet (today was cheese!!!!!) or someone who can understand when you talk about going from being hungry All The Time to now looking at the time and being like oh **** I need to eat! The support group in my area/through my surgeons office meets twice a month and I haven't had a chance to attend a meeting. And I searched on here to see if there was a chat room or discord server or something with no luck. Anyone else feeling like this?

Sleeve to Gastric Bypass-cancer survivor
ocdennise posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I was sleeved Oct 2013 & lost 90lbs (gained back 20 lbs) but never got to goal weight or close. I really committed to changing my lifestyle; exercising (running & weight lifting) & used myfitness pal to log food. I felt great & looked great. Then, life unraveled. In 2016 found out my husband of 20yrs was cheating on me, I realized he was an alcoholic & we divorced, I was laid off from my job & then diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer. My kids were 10 & 12 at the time & I had no family to help me (both parents deceased & brother lives 3hrs away by plane). I went through 9hr surgery to remove a foot of my colon & then 7 mos of chemo & steroids. I put on 60lbs during chemo & have not been able to lose it. I had a bad fall after last chemo treatment from neuropathy in feet. I have so much pain in my knees I can’t run. Don’t know if all due to excess weight, arthritis (I’m 54), chemo, menopause? I finished my ins requirements for a revision & scheduling revision to bypass is next. But, I am so hard on myself & questioning if it will work and if I shouldn’t be messing with my body especially surviving cancer? I have regained all my weight &depressed. I hate the way I look & struggle with trying to be happy I am alive after cancer. I have heard weight loss is slower after revision. Is that always the case? Anyone else have cancer after wls & regained and had revision? I feel lost. I miss the adrenaline I used to get from working out. -
This surgery is bullshit...
Angelina1210 replied to goodmanje's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi, I’m so sorry you’re having a difficult time. I have surgery in December and I worry about this same thing happening to me. I’ve heard so many different theories as to why the weight comes off so slow. If you don’t mind me asking how many pounds were you overweight? Do you find that you are able to consume what you used to? If so, I would definitely talk with your surgeon. I heard a woman on here say she did the bypass after the sleeve was not effective enough. Have you talked to your surgeon? I wish you all the best and know that it will get better. 🧡 -
November Surgery Buddies!!!
Somgstress replied to Tristenhilpert97's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Just had my gastric bypass on 11/22. It is fine physically generally but, is messing with my mind a bit more than I was expecting. Crushing pills and drinking”poison tea” twice a day is so disgusting and nauseated! That is possible the worst part. -
Hi! I am 6 days post-op from the gastric bypass. I lost 14lbs so far which is super exciting since I can’t remember the last time I had lost this much weight. I am now drinking protein shakes and water but i am honestly struggling with that. I can’t seem to drink enough water or protein a day. It’s just that I get so incredibly full and I can’t seem to stomach anything more. I’m not pushing myself and i’m listening to my body but I don’t want to become dehydrated. Does anybody have any suggestions with how to drink more water and protein? Anything and everything helps!

I still feel hunger after bypass. I feel light headed and weak feeling. I do drink my fluids religiously so I realize it must be hunger. There is no sensation of fullness so I measure everything possible. So, I’m still trying to sense a signal or off switch. I’m glad metformin is helping @lizonaplane!

Acid Reflux or GERD post surgery
Jd101 replied to Angelina1210's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had acid reflux at least 3-4 times a week before surgery sometimes more. I discussed this with my Dr because I did not want to end up having a revision because of it getting worse. He said that out of the thousands of surgeries he has done he could count on one hand how many actually had a revision and not all of them were because of reflux. I may be one of the few but I have not had reflux since I started my pre op diet and I am 7 months out. -

Hey There! Any December 2021 Surgery Friends?
BethoftheBurgh replied to armartin98's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi everyone! This is my first post - my bypass surgery is scheduled for Friday, December 2nd in Pittsburgh, and I start Clear Liquids Sunday night. I haven’t told many people about my surgery because I don’t want their uninformed opinions. I was terrified for a long time, but I’m starting to get a little excited. Good luck to everyone ❤️ -
RNY to RNY revision.
Sunnyway replied to ShannonCorbin's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I'm at 266 right now, pre-surgery. I'm optimistic having read your status at 2.5 months. I'm hoping to break 200 after the revision. I haven't seen "onederland" since college. I dare not even dream of a lower target weight. I have done so well pre-surgery that people are asking why I want to go ahead with the revision. I was stalled for 10 weeks and thought I had bottomed out. However, this week I have just dropped a few pounds. I still don't have a surgery date, but that may be due to the rise in COVID cases In my area. -
RNY to RNY revision.
elp93 replied to ShannonCorbin's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I did an RNY revision to distal rny. I am 2.5 months out and was 266 two week before my surgery and today I was 216.4 (weight in the afternoon after eating). I have a toddler so not picking at her leftovers was an issue but the longer you stick with it the better it is! Also, you learn from your previous mistakes with your last surgery. I felt terrible after my first surgery but I’m taking my vitamins diligently and eating good and I’m so glad I did it! I’m going to start going to the gym soon too 🙂 -

My surgery was Monday. Bypass and I had such a horrible stay. No iv pain meds were given , I was puking. I had to beg for anti Naseu meds through iv but they would only give me oral. Horrible experience. I'm so glad yours as better. I'm home too, I wear a binder and sleep with that on. It works alot. -
Possibility of non-reversible complications?
catwoman7 replied to Starky's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
P.S. they do have about 30 years of data on the RNY - although even over that time period, the technique has been changed a bit (and improved). Not as much data on the sleeve since that is a newer surgery. The sleeve is phase 1 of the duodenal switch surgery, and it wasn't offered as a standalone surgery until a few years ago (because many patients lost enough weight with the sleeve part of the DS (before having phase 2 - the intestinal bypass part of the DS) that they decided to offer it as a standalone surgery. It wasn't really until it started replacing the lapband ten or so years ago that it really took off in popularity.
