I have Tricare Prime and my surgery is on May 18th. I have not seen the final ok but the doctor I am working with said it should be no problem and they have many Tricare patients. I can get the sleeve or bypass. The sleeve is new to their list for approval. I asked my primary care for a referral and I had it in less than a week. I researched the area for the surgeon I wanted to go with and checked on their website that they worked with Tricare. The doctor I am using is listed in the Tricare as a general surgeon. The long wait was for an opening with this doctor. Once I got in his office together he and Tricare required: One appointment with psych. (This is covered under Tricare Prime). One appointment with a nutritionist. (This was not covered and I paid $75 to see the nutricianist in his office). An appointment with my primary to be released for surgery. (Regular copay). An appointment at the hospital for prep (blood work, ecg... No copay) If you are getting the sleeve my doctor requires an endoscopy to make sure you are good. (I don't think this was a Tricare requirement). The surgeons office just called and asked me to start on some Vitamin B12, D and Iron due to my blood work. They seem sure I am good to get the surgery in 3 weeks. I am staying optimistic and will update when I more info or if anyone has any questions...

How did you choose between bypass and sleeve?
annasr08 replied to annasr08's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The only reason why I am back and forth is because of the long term results. Everything I have read and what the surgeon said at the info session was that there wasn't as much data long term as there is with the bypass Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
2 to 3 months for sure. 4 weeks is nowhere near enough time to fully recover from ANY surgery. No matter what surgery I have had - 4 shoulder surgeries, hysterectomy, gastric bypass - they all take a minimum of 6 weeks to start feeling more like yourself and longer in the WLS case because your body is adjusting to SO much change - hormone fluctuation, dramatic drop in calorie intake, switch from carbs for energy to Protein for energy, just the energy it takes to flush the fat from your body, etc. Give it time. You will get there and you won't even remember this time!!

My boyfriend and I just started dating he had gastric bypass surgery 3 months ago. I have a degree in culinary arts and am trying to develop new recipes/ideas for us. I too want to transition to his diet so we both live healthier lives. Any recipes, suggestions, or comments would be greatly appreciated.

Well, what can I say. I had surgery a year ago on March 17th. I lost around 75 pounds and was very strict until the holiday season began in November. To make a long story short, I have gained 20 lbs. since then, and stopped exercising. I feel completely out of control and feel as if my mind is blocking me from getting back on track. Has anyone else had this experience? I really need some advice from those who have had the same or similar problem. Please help.

My fellow support group people said to be patient. I can't do simple tasks like planting flowers. Anyone experience this? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Hello, I need help please. I had my lap band surgery in 23 November 2016. My band is 9 CC filled so far. Before I did the surgery my weight was 82 kg (180.77 pounds) and my height is 174 cm (5.7). We are now in Mid February and my weight is only 78 kg (171 pounds). I am feeling like I am not loosing weight. Is there any problem? I am starting to regret that I did the operation from the first place. I am so frustrated and sad. Can someone please help me. Thanks!

Interested in Lap Band, but surgeon recommended RNY over LapBand

Thanks, Em. 100+ pounds is a scary number -- a little overwhelming. Makes me want to cry sometimes. I guess the RNY has appeal because of the speedier weight loss. I'm looking to do WLS so I can have quality of life. Losing weight won't help me if I end up being sick all the time, which can happen. My sister has a friend who has been nauseous everyday of her life since she had her bypass 4 years ago. She says that if she had known then what she knows now, she'd rather be fat. Really gives me something to think about. -
Getting the bypass today and super nervous! They are prepping me now and freaking lol. Wish me luck!

I was banded in 2006 and had issues from 2008 on but did keep the majority of my weight off. During that time I got the works done, lbl, arms, thighs and breasts. Then sept 2012 I became I expectantly pregnant. My band went haywire when I was about 4 months and never went back to normal. Between pregnancy and complete unfill I gained 45lbs. Surprisingly, my tummy fared well and only new scars are those from surgery on Wednesday. I am thankful I was given the opportunity to convert to bypass and will enjoy it once I get passed this hump. My goal is 50 but I'd like to try for 70 just to see if I can do it

Hello I just had my bypass on June 12th. Aside from the blood clot and infection I got in my arm that had the IV, I feel great! I do have severe knee arthritis from my additional weight. I have lost 38 pounds since starting my journey, just got off all the weight from the Water they pumped in me so I don't know what I have actually lost since surgery, and I was wondering how long did it take for your knees to start feeling better? Since we can't take any anti-inflammatory meds it's been a little rough. I was 350 and now 312, so hoping it will start to relieve. I have read that for every pound we carry it is 5-7 pounds on ours knees. So I have technically taken about 150 pounds off my knees. Also wondering if we can have cortisone injections. I have read conflicting information on that. I wanted to have an injection of anti-inflammatory for my infected arm and they said that it still goes through the stomach so just thought maybe the cortisone would too. Thoughts our suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

My decision to have Lap Band surgery was based on it being a minimally invasive surgery with a short recovery time. I was up and about just hours after having the procedure preformed with no significant pain to speak of. Ive been problem free the entire journey thus far! (knock on wood) Without a doubt i feel ive had the same results with Lap Band surgery as i would have with a bypass.

from having a gastric bypass, i can tell you that there are a few negatives. after the surgery, my hair got very thin and a lot fell out b/c the decreased amount of nutrition being absorbed by your intestines. I still very often get diarhea, upset stomaches and dumping with almost any combination of dairy and sweet. also, after a while the stomache stretches and you cant adjust it like the band. I hope this was helpful. good luck!!

I have lost 100 pounds in less than 10 months and I have only slimmed/pb'd twice...and that is because I ate too fast and didn't chew enough. I would rather do this than go through the dumping syndrome that some of the bypass patients have. Also, all of my nutritional levels are right where they should be because this is a restrictive procedure and not a malabsorptive procedure. I chose this surgery because there were less risks involved.

i know i am only newly banded.. BUT.. one of my BF and both my mother in law and father in law.. all had the bypass and i will tell you from first hand they get sick WAY more than any banded person i know... i understand things don't get stuck with the bypass but if u eat anything that ur new stomach doesn't agree with it will come back up... my FIL can't eat hardly any meat... and my BF can't touch any sugars... i don't know about you but i enjoy being in control of my body.. at least with the band i am in control and if i want to eat a piece of cake at a wedding or birthday party i can.... i just know that i must be responsible for all my choices and make up for it through the rest of the day... Good luck on your decision!

I had booked surgery for last November, then had last minute nerves and cancelled. i then embarked on 'hypnoband', it cost me £300, and didnt help me......im now booked to have a band in 3 weeks time. i guess it was worth a shot, and i guess it must work for some, but now i feel the band is the only option, but its good to know i;ve tried everything else!

Gastritis and sleeve surgery
catwoman7 replied to thinnerS's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
they usually recommend bypass for people who have GERD, because for a significant minority, it does get worse. Although there are people on here whose GERD actually improved. And for others, it stayed the same. It's more likely to get worse than better, but then, it's all a giant crap shoot. It's hard to predict how it'll turn out for you since it's an individual thing. -
Hi there! I'm scheduled for a revision from Lap-Band to gastric bypass on May 19. I have had my band for 5.5 years and have just had too much trouble with it almost the entire time but worse for the last two years, and I'm looking forward to having it out. I initially wanted nothing to do with bypass and thought the band would be my perfect tool but of course didn't anticipate all the negative effects. It took me a while to decide to revise and now it can't come quick enough!! I am most nervous about my port coming out as I've read that it can be quite painful, and it's been sitting in there getting all encapsulated for more than five years, whereas it seems like the majority of revisions are only two-year-old bands. My biggest hurdle will be my Protein shakes. I can't tolerate artificial sweeteners too well and don't really like whey protein, so I've been researching alternatives. I have an egg-white Protein powder and a vegan powder ready to go, which both are highly rated by consumers. I tried a sample egg-white powder and it was far better to me than whey. They are both sweetened with stevia, also better for me personally. I am also planning on purchasing unjury chicken Soup, which is whey but (apparently) better hidden with the savory flavor. Most of my prep is done and I'm just waiting. PS, I'm not too patient!!

My mother had the gastric bypass and had no waiting period at Cleveland clinic due to it being to get extra skin for a really huge hernia. No nut appointments, nothing. And I watched her be very sick from not doing as she should. So, I have already been drinking 1 protein shake a day getting ready. Also watching what I eat and drinking plenty of water, which I never drank before. Wanting to be my best for sure! I also do research daily on this and exercises to help my wls succeed to the fullest.

Congratulations girly! U look fabulous! What advice do yould you have. I just had surgery 11/4/15. RNY Gastric Bypass. -
Hey, all. First time post here. I’d like to explain my situation briefly. A year ago, my ex and I broke up. One that I was madly in love with. Since then, I’ve found myself blessed in many areas of life. I’ve got the new shiny dream job, dream vehicle, amazingly better relationships with my family, and 3 weeks ago had gastric bypass. The biggest reason for this progress, I feel, is that I’ve focused solely on myself this past year without worrying about any friends or girlfriends. Literally all I’ve done is work to achieve my goals, and have let go of all past relationships with people that were either slowing me down, or were negative influences. However, since my surgery, things have become very dark. For the first time in my life, I’m having dreams every night. These dreams have become extremely vivid, sad, and are almost always flashbacks of people from my past or things that I regret and resent myself for. My work ethic has decreased, and I have realized a major increase in anger, frustration, depression, impatience, and loneliness. I don’t understand what’s going on. This was not happening before the surgery. Has anyone experienced this? I feel like I should be happier now than ever but I also feel that by crossing off one of my largest sources of unhappiness (overeating), I have since further exposed others. Any feedback or advice is sincerely appreciated.

I don’t remember how quickly I lost weight with my Gastric Sleeve 10 years ago, but I am losing fairly slowly with the bypass. Since I went on the pre-operation diet on April 30, I have lost about 9 kgs - nearly 20 lbs - but in the last couple of weeks, only about 1 kg per week. Not worried though - I am in this for the long haul. The doctor and dietician are telling me I may only lost another 7-8 kgs, but I plan on proving them wrong. I am currently just over 80 kgs (176 lbs) and my first goal is 75 kgs, but my actual goal is to get into the 60s. I’d like to be somewhere between 65-68 kgs (143-150 lbs). I will enjoy proving them wrong!

Ugh that's really frustrating! I can totally feel how that would be disappointing. That said, you must have lost a bunch pre-op; that slows your progress. I'm not sure what you mean by water? Unlike the sleevers, we bypassers don't have a high-pressure pouch. It shouldn't be that hard to drink for you after 5+ weeks. Maybe some RNYers can chime in? Are you otherwise sticking to the plan?
