    Sugar Addiction

Regarding sugar addiction, I know there are a ton of good books out there on the topic. But I'd highly recommend Good Junkies by Phil Werdell and the documentary Fed Up. The latter will both enlighten and anger you if you are anything like I.

    Saskatchewan RNY?

Hi, I am also in Regina, Sk. I am pre-surgery - getting my surgery in Mexico so that I can skip the waiting. I am curious to know what kind of help you are getting from the bariatric program? Is it the same old "eat less and exercise more" kind of bs? Cuz we all know how well THAT works! But seriously, I would love to know what kind of diet they want you to follow, since I don't get any pre-op assistance at all. I think I have to do fluids only for a week before surgery, but that's all.
  3. Hello all, I'm a little bit over 3 weeks post op and have been following the rules to a T. I haven't had any sugar or carbs whatsoever. However, a few times this week, including tonight, I've experienced horrible stomach pains followed by the you-know-what that comes along after that. It's driving me crazy bc I'm doing what I'm told. Can someone tell me if that's Dumping syndrome? I have heard a little about it. I don't have all the symptoms but the two I said prior.. help!!
  4. We are 'foodies'! It's apart of us. In any situation -- social, functions, emotional and just bc! It'll always be hard for us I truly believe bc somehow it gives a lvl of comfort. I am only three months out and occasionally will see my kids or husband have something and (in my head, be drooling). But remember I CHOSE this new life and I'll be damned if food is to consume me again. I also love that 'now' when I eat I know a few bites before I'm getting full and mentally bc I know I could revert back to old ways if I (stretch) the pouch I can control it and stop immediately. What I once loved so so much I don't desire like I used to. Empanadas, tostones and rice were a weekly occurrence in my house. I had one bite when I got the go ahead and haven't had another since... Between my surgery and God I've gotten thru this quite easily.

    Ignorant bi#@h

Mean people suck. I also feel sorry for such negative/hate filled people. What kind of life is it that you seek to elevate yourself by putting others down? I have a strong personality so frankly never had to deal with this BS because i would just make the offender wilt under my interogation - ha... give me 10 minutes with her! If it is genuinely upsetting I would complain to HR. I bet she hurts and manipulates other people too - most likely on a variety of subjects. I do remember once being made to feel about 2" tall by a guy I worked with (my boss as a matter of fact) relating to my single parent status. (The irony is that he divorced later and wound up raising 5 kids all by himself). In modern times, there are laws about hostile work environments and nobody should make you feel bad about improving your life. Frankly, the very best "revenge" - the dish best served cold - is when you lose that weight and live a healthy, active life in your new slimmer body. Nobody will care if you took an easy, hard or whatever way... they will just think "woo hoo - look at that cute woman and her rocking bod!"
  6. My nutritionist (who is part of my surgeon's office) outlined the post-op diet as: Clear liquids 2-3 days post Full Liquids 4-7 days post Soft around day 10 Upon discharge from the hospital, my surgeon said to stay on clear liquids as long as possible (like until my 2 week follow up) so I'll lose more weight. I am legitimately hungry, light headed and weak. Yesterday I sipped a Protein shake all day and managed to get some significant protein. I'm not going to go crazy and actually eat anything, but I feel like a Protein Shake is reasonable at post-op day 5. I am not getting hardly any protein on clear liquids bc I absolutely can not do the Isopure without gagging. Anyone have any experience with differing advice from the professionals??

    Post-op day 2 and regretting

**Update** First of all, thank y'all very much for all the positive support and well wishes. I was a little hesitant to join BP bc I wasn't sure if I would get the support I wanted. But, you guys are wonderful and I'm glad I'm here. Post-op Day 5...today is the first day I've felt semi-human. My brain feels more focused and less under attack from the pain. Still having a little bit of an issue with gas pain and general intestinal gurgling. I don't know what the designation of the second incision from the right was but holy #%^*. It must have been torqued on unmercilessly or was the liver retractor site. I have bruised so badly and have such intense pain from that ONE site. Mild to moderate sharp pain with deep breathing on the left side and a constant aching, burning, tearing pain from that incision on the right. But making due with Tylenol... I really hope I'm over the hump and maybe by day 7 I'll feel 80%.

How much did it cost me? UHC high deductible plan.

I count myself extremely lucky. Mine will be a $250 co pay for the whole thing, and I have no deductible. I'm Kaiser Fed.

    Helping kids

My son is 9 and I went through some of your same thoughts in April. My son is a worrier...he is on anxiety meds. I decided not to tell him. I made sure my legal stuff and guardian info was up to date. He thought I was going with my friend to Mexico while she had surgery (which was kinda true). Well, I called him after surgery and he wanted to know how my surgery went!! So, I came clean and told him it was all fine. Then he wanted pictures...which confused me. It was then that I realized he thought I got a boob job!!! It's a running joke with me bc I always say I'm gonna get boobs. So, at the end, I would say that kids hear everything even when u think they don't. But only u can really answer your heart about telling him or not. Good luck!

    6 month wait...

There has only been one other person I've read about having a one year "hoop" on this board! I think there should be one set standard!!!! A year is a long time---if it is medically necessary, provide the required info and keep going! I asked my "coach" provided/required by my insurance, "how many people have life changing weight loss after having 20-30 minute phone conferences once a month for 12 months AND no longer need the surgery?" She referred me to BCBS. ????Why would she refer you to bcbs? I'm sorry I'm a little dense right now from a hard day at work and trying to get used to my new eating plan. She is contracted by BC/BS---she didn't have the stats I guess. However, the MD office told me no one ever finishes the program!

    6 month wait...

I had to wait also, BC/BS of IL. It was very frustrating because I only lost 5#'in that time and my pcp who was monitoring me was frustrated with me too. She said every time, "why aren't you losing weight?" I finally told her if I COULD lose weight on my own, I WOULD have lost weight already! She finally seemed to understand and became more supportive! Hopefully someday people won't have to go,through these hoops for WLS. No one makes you me go through psychologists or anyone for a hysterectomy, liposuction or a face lift. It's MY body, I pay my premiums on time, and a six month wait was ridiculous!
  12. Hi everyone! Had my surgery July 17... Boy oh boy is it uncomfortable. I'm looking fed to feeling more normal :-(
  13. @@tiffie00 - I am a BCBS Fed employee spouse. I had a BMI that was a bit higher, but other health issues such as high blood pressure and they added pre-diabetic. I also could show trips to the doctor and being placed on meds to help also lose weight, Weight watchers, etc. I also was told I was a bit shorter, just under 5'8" and they could use that to bump up my BMI... IMHO think your medical history will probably be enough to get you approved : PCOS & Type II

    Menstrual maddness!

Had my surgery on 4/27 and had my period during preop diet. I am not on BC but my bf is fixed. Well...no period for 3 months! But, just started again yesterday on my flight back from Bahamas. My periods before we're always very heavy and lasted 7-10 days. This one seems lighter....hoping shorter too!!

    Anxiety overload

I think it's totally normal to freak out and be scared it's a life changing thing to do u can eat again I promise it will take time to work up to things you ate before but u absolutely can and will eat normally again now by normally I don't mean making a habit of eating high fat high calorie high sugar foods that got us this way to begin with I'm close up five months post op sleeve I can eat most anything I've had no issues meat is a little hard u really must chew carefully I've not thrown up or anything eat slow when u start solid food u get full very fast and u can easily become uncomfortable after just one bite too many I read that advice for months before my surgery on this site however it's a lesson I had to learn in the moment it will seem impossible in the first weeks that u will eat normal food again we are all here to tell u that you will it is a process I'm not gonna lie or bs you it takes getting used yo it's a re adjustment u will find that u feel satisfied as u are full just as u were full before but on much more food then needed follow what the dr office tells u to do

    Insurance coverage

CMS federal guidelines are here. I skimmed did not see a pre surgery requirement period. http://www.cms.gov/medicare-coverage-database/details/ncd-details.aspx?NCDId=57&bc=AgAAgAAAAAAA&ncdver=3 Also if you have Medicare advantage they may add additional requirements like an EGD or other testing but have to be minimally the same
  17. My body ate my thyroid up in 1993 and for the past 22 years I have been overweight and adding every year. When my last son was born (he weighed 13llbs) I swore I would lose weight as he was going to be the last child (I have four sons) - I was NEVER going to go through that again lol. Anyway, I would lose weight, put it back on, lose weight and put it back on blah blah. My knees hurt, my back hurts and I can’t paint my own toenails Like @@ShrinkingPeach, I remarried nearly 4 years ago after being with my first hubby 25 years. My husband is totally different than my first, he’s very supportive and encouraging and watched me lose 85llbs in 2013 to only slowly put it all back on. I want to be around with him for a very long time and to be able to do the things he loves to do too, which my weight (and mind) has always hindered me from doing. So in 5 days I am being sleeved Autumn of 2016 we will be flying to Canada and having 3 weeks traveling Alberta and BC, on a Harley. Kate
  18. At the moment I am at the lowest I have been. Fed up of being told that I'm getting a revision and then they dont deliver. Cost comes into it on the NHS. Thats why I'm looking further afield. If you know of anywhere decent let mknow? The condition has made me push my friends away

    1. ProudGrammy

      ProudGrammy

confused- did you have a revision already??if you did or did not - that's awful that people can't keep their WRONG opinions to themselves - tell them i said so LOL

you are doing great - congrats on all your success kathy

      Ro Rookes

I have never had a revision. Have been treated twice for malnutrition. Have problems with Barium meal as I vomit it back up before it has any effect. Looking for an alternative to this so that the NHS will continue. Otherwise nothing and no hope.

  19. I am sorry that you are having a difficult time. I am only 3 days post op so I am not an expert but my experience does not match yours. Pre surgery on the pre-op diet , I was hungry physical and head hunger and they connected. My head hunger fed my physical hunger. Now I get some head hunger, like food pops into my head but it doesn't connect to my stomach, my stomach has no reaction, and even the head hunger fades very quikcly. My preop diet was 10 days all liquids. I would finish a shake, down 302 oz of Water and still be hungry or not satisfied, and my head hunger was driving me insane I lost all concentration and could barely owrk. I am satisfied now with just a few sips. I know most people are dying for and looking forward to being on foods again but after the feeling of swallowing a few pills, I am not interested in rushing back to food. I think it is important for people like you to tell your story and for other people. I paid closer attention to the people with bad outcomes and negative experiences before I had surgery. It sucks because it seems like the positive experience people run the people with negative experiences off of every board/forum. I read those experiences and thought seriously about them pre-surgery. It took me several years to reach this decision, even though once I decided it all went very quickly. I decided that even a bad outcome was better than the path I was headed down with my health. My health went from good to starting to slide at a rapid pace. I decided it was better to take a chance on this than to suffer a long slow death over the next 10-15 years (still too young for someone like me), or worst disability. So don't stop telling your truth even if it isn't popular or positive, you are still helping someone.

  21. First find a surgeon that you are comfortable with. Once you have chosen your doctor, they will walk you through the steps and their office will go through all the insurance red tape for you. Also, the surgeons office usually recommends a psychiatrist and nutritionist for you. As far as Fed BCBS goes they want you to have three months of documented medically supervised weight loss program, actually four, your initial visit and three visits thereafter. I hope this info helps.
  22. I also have BCBS FEP, but just beginning stage to finding a doctor, let alone deal with BS yet. I do have a question though I hope some can clear up, especially being other FEP members. At what point do you apply for insurance. I keep reading all the hoops one must jump through. I have had supervised WL programs documented (I hope BCBS would waive that requirement to be on a WL program for (is it 3 or 4 months) and the psych evals and nutritionist. So those are what I have read here. Say during my first doctor consultation and like that doctor and he weighs me and I meet the BMI 40. The doctor (assuming it is BCBS doctor and Center of Excellent hospital) that I am looking at. So is that when he would submit the required insurance; and is that when I assume they will come back and say I need to do the WL program, psych, nutrist and then will be approved? If I go on a WL program for 3 months, I would not doubt drop under the BMI 40. Is that when they deny things? Or if you check every box, regardless if I dropped to 38 or 39 BMI would they acknowledge my dedication. I'm just don't understand are you approved but then have to meet all those requirements, or is the weight in prior to asking about insurance coverage. Also, if insurance gives you the requirements you must meet first, are you chosing your own pyschs, nutritionist, wl programs, or are these professionals, based on the bariatric surgeon recommendations. I hope I'm explaining my confusion.
  23. Diet coke may well have caused those ulcers, but carbonation itself cannot and will not do so. Ulcers in stomach lining from soda are largely from the corosive effects of the mass amounts of phosphoric acid in coke. Phosphoric acid is a triprotic strong acid, battery acid is sulfuric, a diprotic. That said, phosphoric acid is one of the few common acids even stronger than battery acid, and we all know how evil that stuff is. There's a reason that both Coca-cola and PepsiCo have special licenses from the feds to transport their syrups on public roads - they're so hazardous when undiluted that they require hazmat if any of the tanker trucks carrying them spill. The carbonation, however, is not itself the cause of the ulceration. Don't make the mistake of drinking flat soda to avoid the 'evils' of carbonation or so religiously avoiding carbonation that you go thirsty on a hot summer day when sparkling Water is your only option.

    Fed up

Hey guys!!! So I've been debating on this post for weeks now and I'm finally just going to do it. I've seen a lot of "attackers" on this site and have become extremely sick of reading their comments. I started out at 398 on June 1. On June 24th I had VSG surgery and was 370. Today (July 17) I am down to 353. I have followed the eating plan to a T and have been walking 2-3 miles a day since 3 days post op. No complications at all, one dumping incidident and I hate cottage cheese now but used to love it. Anyways my point of this post is to express my frustration with those who say "you need to follow this diet to a T for the rest of your life. Don't cheat, don't eat more than you should, keep your sugar low or non existent and make sure your carbs and sodium remain small. I didn't put my body through surgery to be on a DIET for the rest of my life. I will obviously continue to eat protein first and then veggies and then fruit for the majority of my week but if I want to eat something a little less healthy when I'm cleared for all foods, I will do as I please. I'm sick of others sitting there telling others who feel the same that they are ruining their chance at success, that they followed the rules and still do and they reached goal blah blah blah. Stop goal shaming others, you were once a fat mess like the rest of us so it doesnt make you any better. I really love coming here to get advice and support but I'm about ready to quit this site and never look back do to some of these snarky high horse commenters.
