January Surgery buddies
Slimming_Santos replied to Tinats's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi!!! I am January 18th! Getting RNY/Gastric Bypass and I am so excited...and terrified! I am going to document my journey, the good the bad, ugly and amazing on my WLS 📱 Instagram! 🔥 Slimming_Santos 🔥 I would love to follow others sharing their Journey! Please add me, I will add you back! -
I do But you're right. I think we'll see a future where the sleeve or similarly 'less invasive' procedures are a first line of action, and then if it doesn't work out, I predict we'll see a LOT more loop-type bypasses like mine or SADI-S.

Sleeve vs Bypass concerns
ShoppGirl replied to ht1976's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Idk about the exact times but yes the sleeve is much quicker however statistically there are also slightly fewer risks. That’s why many doctors prefer it to bypass will all other things being equal. Now, whether they should make the same amount of money is another question entirely. -
Quick word on this: a sleeve can be done in 15 minutes. A RNY bypass takes 2-3 hours. Factor that into the recommendation you get; surgeons usually get paid about the same for the two procedures, give or take.

Hi I decided on a gastric sleeve rather than a bypass. As its less evasive and the operation is quicker and less complications. Nearly all surgeons recommended the sleeve now over the bypass

Hi everyone, Had my gastric bypass surgery December 7th. Today I'm 3 weeks post op. Starting weight was 285 today I'm 263. I can't tolerate anything. Everything makes me sick to my stomach except saltine crackers.... my whey protein isolate shakes. I tried adding yogurt, almond butter, bananas to give it flavor, but I can only take a couple of sips before I start feeling sick.I have little to no energy...I take ALL my vitamins; I drink as much water as I can..it makes me nauseous.I have my follow up apt. December 28th I'm looking forward to getting answers to help with the situation. Continue success to us all Happy New Year Sent from my SM-F711U using BariatricPal mobile app

Questions to ask in initial consult
ShoppGirl replied to Hopeful_Gal's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
How far are you in the process? Meaning have you decided which surgery you want? Do you have any medical issues which may dictate which surgery is best?? I have bipolar which made the sleeve more ideal for me but I wanted bypass because of the greater weight loss statistics so that’s what I spent most of my time talking about. But you may ask how many of these surgeries he/she has done and their success rates? What to expect after surgery? If work applies how much time you will need to take off your particular job? Whether you can or are expected to lose weight on your program before your pre op diet?? They should also have their own list of things to go over with you that they think are important for you to know. -
Time between each bite 1 month post-Op?

Exciting times ahead As a bypass patient, be very curious about the satiation your bypass will induce. Best case scenario is you learn to recognize what 'satiated' means in a way we didn't before. This will come in handy for the longer term. "I know when I'm full", say most. Yet for most, especially for those of us who've been on a million diets, there are two problems with this statement: 1. We're experts in not listening to our body's signals (every single statement like 'I just gotta get back on track' actually simply means 'I just have to start ignoring my emotional and/or physical needs') 2. Being 'full' isn't the same as being satiated I can't, obviously, speak to the specifics of RNY. Your pouch is (quite a lot) smaller than mine. I will say though: it comes completely naturally to me now to stop eating when I'm satisfied, satiated; that feeling of my body having gotten what it needed. It took at least 6 months to really get to know those signals. -
I’m reposting this cause I put it in the wrong forum. I had my bypass over 20 yrs ago and have struggled from day one to eat protein, especially meat and beans. They make me throw up or they just sit there and fester in my tummy. I’m doing a keto diet cause it makes me feel better not to eat bread and pasta. My family doc doesn’t know anything except broken bones and colds so I don’t know what to tell him I need checked. Has anyone had this issue? I have lost so much hair the last few months because I need protein and I can’t seem to get enough. I’m also milk intolerant. Any suggestions?

I had a full gastric bypass over 20 yrs ago and have struggled to eat any meat. I needed to lose almost 100 lbs because of heart issues and that worked out well, but have since gained just a few back. I am now losing so much hair because I can’t get enough protein. I am doing keto because it makes me feel better not to eat breads and beans. Anybody struggling with this that has had the surgery a while ago? I can’t drink enough protein. My family dr doesn’t seem to know much about more than broken bones and colds. HELP, I’m going to go bald if I can’t fix this. Any suggestions for my doctor?

Bypass 12/23. I can’t say I am feeling “great” yet but all things considered I am doing pretty good. Better than my hysterectomy on post op day 3. I switched to only Tylenol today for pain control and it is working to keep me fairly comfortable. My abdomen is sore for sure and this belly band has been a life saver. I am tolerating liquids fine. Problem is getting enough in to stay hydrated. Two post op issues are constant cough/post nasal drip and constipation. Coughing hurts the belly for sure! Hope it goes away soon. -

Welcome. I had my RNY Bypass on 12/15. starting weight 282 HW 287 Current weight 270 Recovering from surgery too Got drain removed on 12/23 Pain is still real Can only tolerate clear liquids still -
I had RNY in 2010. I lost nothing for the first 8 days. It was almost comical since I was barely getting anything in. On day 9, I dropped 7 lbs. I had a revision 2 weeks ago. I lost 5 lbs the first week, nothing for the past 5 days. I have learned not to sweat the scale too much. I’m feeling leaner, and I know as long as I keep it up, it will come off.

Covid Post Op and Weight Loss Stalled
Starwarsandcupcakes replied to Soon2bFit21's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I’m 16 months post revision for GERD and 2years out from VSG. First symptoms 9 days ago, tested positive on the 20th. Even while moving less and eating more calories I’ve managed to somehow lose weight. Symptoms include- extreme fatigue, sinus congestion, migraine, dry cough, diarrhea, and some body aches. Edited to add- you’re right on track for a stall as well being almost 6months out. That might be part of it along with the inflammation that Covid causes. -

Lost weight, but don't feel good.
lizonaplane replied to lizonaplane's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have not had to make any changes in my meds for bipolar disorder so far, but we'll see. One thing I've been told is that extended release drugs may not work as well, and my surgeon suggested sleeve over bypass because sometime bypass makes meds a little screwy, although the second opinion I got said she didn't think it would be an issue (she still recommended sleeve, but she would have ordered an endoscopy to check on reflux, which my surgeon didn't do). Good luck! -
Love this thread. Just read the sleeve reset thread in this subforum. It's like a great advertorial ... ... for bypass surgeries. And therapy.

My date is the 27th also I feel the same way. I am having a revision from Band to Sleeve. -
Hello everyone!!!! It has officially been 1 month since I I went gastric bypass. I am currently down 32lbs. On my surgery date 11/23/2021 I was 276lbs. Today I am 244.6 lbs. This month is been CRAZY. Especially the last week or so. I’ve been extremely week, but speaking with my RN and dietician we determined I’m not getting enough calories and I am in ketosis. I will be speaking with my surgeon today as well just to see if there is anything else that he would add. Besides the lack of energy, I feel pretty good. I had an issue with acid reflux, but a little Prilosec and zofran cleared that right up. I also have been put on monthly B12 injections. Just giving a one month update. 💛💛💛💛

Knee surgery
Lynnlovesthebeach replied to cahart2002@aol.com's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Not knee surgery but I did have a total hip replacement 8 months after my gastric bypass. The ortho doc wouldn't do it until my BMI was less than 30. He said surgery would be safer and my recovery would be much easier. He was right! He was also impressed with my weight loss!
