How can you tell how much loose skin you have?
ebroms17 posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Hi everyone! I'm 8 months out from my modified DS/SIPS surgery with Dr. Roslin at Lenox Hill in NYC. As of today, I'm down 91.8 lbs from my surgery date (7/17/2017) and 98.8 lbs from my HW. I'm currently 5'2" and 168.8 lbs. I know BMI is a little bit of BS, but according to my BMI at my weight and height, I'm still in the obese category - and I don't look obese anymore. I'm actually fitting in a size 8 / medium for the most part. I know the high end of health weight for my height is around 135, so that's my goal, but I've been wondering if I need to aim higher based on how much loose skin. I definitely have a nice little pooch and very intense chicken wings. Is there a way to tell or guesstimate how much of your excess weight is just loose skin? I want to make sure I don't lose too much and readjust my goal appropriately. Thanks in advance! -
How nice your reply is Bandista. I appreciate it. Perhaps you are right. I will "act as if" you are right. I was not ready before. I thought it was a magic pill. I had a friend who went to Mexico and got her band 2 years before me. She dropped weight fast and hardly ever ate. I made up my mind to pursue it once our ins. started covering it. I thought my path would be the same. In fact, ppl were amazed I was going to have it done....b/c I thought, and they thought thru my explanations, that I was essentially giving up eating more than like a 1/4 cup of food 3 times a day. I somehow really believed that was my future when I went in the day of surgery, had wrapped my head around it and embraced it. I was gonna be skinny for once in my life! Well, that has not been my story. I never expected to get hungry. I also didn't realize I was such an emotional eater before. So, do believe in the changes I need to make now, and am willing to start those ODAT. I guess I should look at my band as a tool. I honestly never wanted to tell anyone before I have one. I'm very guarded still at who knows. BC I feel like a lapband failure. I have all along. I have resisted it and denied it, and thought it just didn't work for me. Maybe it will work for me now. I am thankful to have found support here. I think that also, is a big part of it. I don't know anyone else near me or even personally, who has a lapband. So, support has been lacking. I think it works just fine. I do not think I need a fill. I had tohave some taken out a few years ago, bc I could not swallow meat, and other solids. I think if I will use it and eat like I am supposed to, it might just work. Thanks for the support!

Insure Nutrition's Liquid Vitamins
Tootles1975 replied to Tootles1975's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
@@Rovobay Sorry to hear that! I'm very surprised a federal insurance plan doesn't cover it. I have BC BS of Massachusetts through my husband's company (a private engineering firm). -
Janice. If you came to Surrey, BC, it would only be 13,000 (less if you don't require a night in the hospital - some people don't) and fills are free. 2 years is a long wait. Implement the loan in with your other payments maybe? That's what we did; consolidated everything. It would be so worth it! Good luck to you, Kat.

Hi I’m from NY, but no where near you lol. I’m out near Buffalo. I am almost 3 months post op from the sleeve. Best decision ever! I go out to eat on occasion. I usually just check the menu before I go and then order whatever I feel is safest. I sometimes just order and appetizer. You really can’t fit much. For example I often order a salad with chicken on it but ask for a dinner salad instead of the big salads bc you can literally only fit about 6 bites. I have so much more confidence and in general just feel so good! Hope you have an amazing experience!

starting to get depressed
Nessarae replied to cindyboo1974's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi! I had my surgery oct 15 and I feel the same way. I just had an appt with my dietician and she assured me that ANY liquid I'm in taking is considered part of my "water". I was stressing bc I couldn't get all the protien shakes and all the water down in the same day. One day I did notice I became very dehydrated and felt very light headed and had to try to down my water as quick as I could. -
New to this and can't decide.....
BetsyB replied to gateacher's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
This is where you're absolutely, positively wrong. In the short-term, gastric bypass patients do lose weight, pretty much no matter what they do. But after the honeymoon period, this can--and often does--reverse. The body gets VERY efficient, with its new machinery, and if not fed appropriately, weight gain is not only possible, but more common than not. Look, whatever surgery you have, you're going to have to change your lifestyle dramatically or you WILL have difficulty reaching and/or maintaining goal. If you want a magic bullet, you're not going to find it. Anywhere. -
i love disney world! i've been 4 times and can't wait to get back. right now we're planning on going down next november or december. i should be banded by then and am hoping to be able to jog around the EPCOT jogging trail (think that's what it's called) that goes around the EPCOT resorts. quite ambitious of me, i know. what's everyone's favorite wdw memory? mine would have to be when i was 4 and my brother was 11 months. we were waiting to go into a character breakfast and he started crying. suddenly eeyore appeared and tried to cheer him up by dancing around and stuff. when that didn't work he took a bottle out of the diaper bag and fed my brother. eeyore kneeled on the ground holding the bottle for him and rubbing his head. tigger came over too and the two of them played with my brother, tickling him and hopping around while he had his bottle. we've got it on video and it's one of the nicest, cutest things i've ever seen.

I will eat most any meat, poultry or fish. I try to get grass-fed beef and the best quality poultry and fish. Sadly, the most difficult part of paleo is finding quality Protein. I also eat fresh and frozen veggies. I try to eat protein the size of typical hamburger patty. I have started using a dessert plate as my dinner plate because I can eat a huge salad! It is a very simplistic way of eating, but my family is pretty happy and I feel great. Sent from my iPad using LapBandTalk

Anyone With Diabetes Prior To Surgery?
TheNewSusie replied to jamari's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My preop was a mix of clear and full liquids. I drank a lot of Water and sf drinks like crystal light. (Which I hate now) I always have glucose pills in my purse just in case it drops, but I used a lot if skim milk and glucerna shakes (for diabetics) to keep my bs leveled. I also cut back on insulin and kept track of my bs levels. Any thing I can help with let me know, . My a1c before surgery was 11.4, now it's 7.2 according to my blood work last week. Good luck! U will do fine! -
Feeling Awful, Emotionally.. Suggestions?
AshleyIrene replied to AshleyIrene's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thank you to all of you for your uplifting advice and comments. I stopped taking my bc until I go to appointment next week and see what other options are out there for me. I also saw my counselor today, who gave me a lot of good advice and helped me figure out my triggers through out this process with WLS and myself. This community is so wonderful, it felt like the only place I could go to feeling the way I did. I appreciate this site so much and the people here. So thank you all so much and best wishes to you and your journey! As far as the boyfriend I'll just have to see how it goes.. I've invited him to join the process with me since he is very over weight himself. But he's declined. Change is hard for anyone and you can only change yourself. Xoxoxo. -
Crushed by today's weigh-in
ShelterDog64 replied to White Sale's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@@White Sale It's SO HARD when you know you're on plan, following your surgeon's advice to the letter and still NOTHING on the scale to speak of. But, as others have said, it WILL come off. WLS failures aren't people like you, who do what they're supposed to and just lose more slowly than others...I know that you know this! I'm in a dead stall at about 6 mos out and I'm irritated by it and fed up with it...I know it's going to end and the scale will start moving again, but I'm just peeved. We can be mad together, break our stalls and Celebrate it together Hang in there! -

For some reason today is a downer for me. Maybe it is the weather. My surgery was last Wednesday. I started at 294 and as of today I am 272. I didn't feel like eating until day 4 and even then I ate very little. I miss food but I am thankful that I've had no complications. I belong to MOMS Club and they have fed my family every other night since my surgery which has been a relief. My first attempt at puréed foods left my bloated and a nasty taste in my mouth so now I don't want to try again. A positive note the night pain in my feet is gone, my blood sugar is down and the weight is coming off. Sent from my SM-N900V using the BariatricPal App

What do you guys have your MFP nutrition targets set to?
Kattastic replied to outwithbenjiboi's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
MFP= my fitness pal I have mine set to 1200 cal/day bc my Nutritionist says if you have too few calories your body will be in starvation mode. She said if no exercise, 1000 is ok. 30% Protein 40% carb 30% fat As recommended to me bc good carbs are important. -
It's different for different people. My insurance, Anthem BC/BS, required me to stay overnight for observation. Had the surgery around 11:00 that day. No beds available after my surgery so it was around 5:00 p.m. before I got in an actual room from the recovery room. That next morning, did some walking, had barium swallow, doc saw me around 9:00 a.m.and said I could go. Of course it was not that easy. The doc forgot to sign in all the right places and since it was a Saturday, they spent a half day trying to track her down because would not release me without all paperwork signed. Finally got to leave around 3:00 p.m. Looking back on it now, no regrets.

i think everyone's 'friends' say 'just eat less blah blah blah.' that's why the diet industry is so successful. a whopping 3% of people keep 50+ lbs off for good. it's all bs the diet industry sells us. i'm not saying it's impossible. it's just unlikely.

I am scheduled to be sleeved Oct. 8 in Mexico with Dr. Garcia. I have been very excited until now. About 2 months ago I got pneumonia that lingered. After 2 rounds of antibiotics it went away. (dont know if it's related, but thought it worth mentioning). Then, the 9th of this month had a horrific flare-up of hemorrhoids. PCP sent me straight to a specialist. Had a colonoscopy on aug 13th with no ill efects. Had colorectal surgery, incidentally my first surgery ever, on the 17th. After surgery the surgeon came out, said all went well and my family could go back in a few minutes. Over 2 hours later I was still on the vent bc they could not get me 2 breathe on my own. The worst part was the last 20 or 30 minutes when I was fully conscious, but could not move a muscle. Nonetheless, I was finally able to breathe on my own and a few hours later they sent me home. On day 4 after the surgery I became so I'll I could barely hold my head up. I went to the ER. My BP (normally 100/60) was 160/120, my heart rate was 156 and my temp was 101.7 this was with me taking 2 Percocet every 4 hours wh has 750 mg of Tylenol. I was there for 2 nights and on the 3 rd day felt much better, begged to go home. I was given the big gun IV antibiotics like vancomycin, flagyl and others I can't recall. I was sent home on 2 oral antibiotics and have felt like I was dying until yesterday. Even today if I'm up for more than a few minutes I'm so weak I have to lie down. Do you think this was just bad luck or a huge sign saying do NOT have this surgery ever? I desperately want it, but fat and unhealthy seems better than dead. Sorry its so long with so much info. FYI my blood work all was normal and my surgical site was always beautiful. Nice healing.

How long is the process?
JARS517 replied to hanablu's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
For me, it took about 6 months from my first consult. There were several procedures to have completed (Upper GI, chest xray, bloodwork, EKG) and then visits with dietician, psych and exercise. I have BC/BS and they approved with 1st letter. It depends on your physician. I have a friend that had bypass and all of hers was completed in 6-8 weeks. Best of luck! -

Thanks For All Who Helped Me Make Up My Mind
Jlewis229 posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I Had posted earlier asking for opinions on Band and Sleeve just because I had been reading so many negative things on the band, especially of revisions and people having so many diff problems. I will definitely be sleeved! I had already researched Dr's before bc I thought originally I would get the sleeve before. I will use either Dr. Borland on New Iberia, LA or Dr. Gachassin/Dr. Eschete at Acadiana in Lafayette, LA. My best friend works in New Iberia and lives in Abbeville so either of these are Great Locations for me since she will be helping take care of me since my family can't take off work here in Ga. Thanks for all your input! Johnathan -
My periods have ALWAYS been so painful that finally after many years the doc recommended bc. Wish I knew sooner but after reading these posts I am kinda freaked out to have my period even with the bc pills! I never really skipped the placebo pills but sounds like its the best time to start! I used to miss work and school because of the pain, I dont want it being bad again because of the band.
