Hi. I'm in the UK too and up until this morning, I was having my band removed and a sleeve performed on 10/10. However, I've now decided to go for the bypass - same date, one day after you. Let me know how you go.

Hello uk sleever .. Will do and please keep me updated on how you get on too its nice to have someone going roughly down the same path as me ..what made you opt for the full bypass instead of just the sleeve ? .

Hi everyone, I've been seen by the consultant and he recommends a sleeve, although I'd set my mind on the bypass. The info I've read says that the sleeve is either very successful, or treated as a step towards the bypass, for people with complications (mine being a hernia) or too big for the bypass. I have taken so long to come to the stage where I am admitting to myself that no, I can't diet and keep it off. Having gone this far, researching the best options and then asking for, and fighting for, a procedure, now to be told that is not the best option for me. I'm partly upset, but reading others outcomes, resigned that it'll be ok, but then doctors know best, don't they? Can't wait to look, and be treated as a 'normal person'. I've been through the weigh ahead, nightmare, seen the consultant, waiting for my next appointment, to see the dietician and anesthetist. The consultant guesses that I'll have my op around end of March / early April time. Can't wait. Been Water workout to get fitness levels up, and increasing my walking, although I usually do my 10k steps a day anyway. Went to Zumba, what an experience, everyone dead skinny, and they all know the steps. After the class the instructor came up to me and asked for my phone number??? Then it clicked, poor soul needs educating??? I asked why do you need my number? She said I'll put you in touch with someone that helps me..... I've lost a stone....... My face must have given away what I was thinking, so, needless to say, I'll not be going back there.... mortified..... to make it worse, even though I'm overweight, my ears still work, the click of pretty little things at the front of the class had a great giggle...... One day my time will come, when I can go and exercise and enjoy it.

I changed jobs shortly after my wife had her surgery so we now have a different insurance company...BC/BS of Alabama. My wife tells me there have been a lot of horror stories on here about BC/BS. Does anyone have any info advice on getting approved with them? My boss had gastric bypass with them and I plan to talk with him more tomorrow about this.

A Date to Meet the Surgeon
HOWLUCKYAMI replied to TQUAD64's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi There! I'm from California, too. I'll be having my surgery at Valley Care in Pleasanton. I'm just about a week behind you in the process...I meet with my surgeon on 9/29/08. In fact, I'm doing sort of a 'consultation blast' that day, meeting with the nurse, dietician, psych and surgeon over a 5 hour period in one day. I'm so glad that they offered an all-in-one, as those individual appointments would have really dragged out the process. If I am deemed a candidate, I'll be well on my way! My BMI is 42, no co-morbities but for joint pain associated with my extra weight, and slightly elevated cholesterol on my last lipid panel. Like you, I have Anthem BC. But boy do I have a long history of unsustainable weight loss. Been battling the bulge for over 30 years with little success. Valley Care tells me that they are pretty good about turning around approvals, so I could be banded by the end of November! I am psyched! Good luck to you! -

10 POUNDS GAINED SINCE 3 YEARS HAVING GASTRIC BYPASS

I had gastric by pass 3 years ago. Lost 107 lbs. Now I have gained 10 lbs and would like to get it off. Any suggestions would be so wonderful. Dom IN NEED OF HELP -
Hi Heidi: Blue Cross told me five years, United Healthcare told me two. I realized I had a COBRA policy I can opt into but the price is unbelievable: they quoted me 1,322.00 a month to stay insured, and it's Anthem so I'm not sure if they would cover anything that happened anyway. What I'm thinking is I'll just cross my fingers and pay COBRA for a couple months, and then go out looking for cheaper insurance. I remember Aetna told me that you had to wait six weeks before applying after a major surgery or pre-existing diagnosis and they would look at applications on a case-by-case basis. I don't qualify for HIPAA or CHIP because I have COBRA; if I have a valid offer I don't qualify until it's exhausted. But basically I think what's going to happen is as soon as I'm sure I'm not going to have complications, I'll drop insurance and go bare. I am *quite confident* that barring any complications I am going to be a lot healthier after this surgery. Most routine stuff -- cold, bladder infection, etc, is cheaper out of pocket anyway. Most health conditions in middle age are related to diet: diabetes, heart problems, cancer -- all of it is either entire or somewhat related to that so the likelihood of my having a heart attack or something *after* this surgery is kind of small. This is clearly the biggest risk self-pay patients face but later on I wonder who else will be stuck between a rock and a hard place, unisurable because of their sugery they got while on another carrier. I spent some time following links from an initial link that promised to have "gastric bypass insurance." All I got back was a quote screen where I could leave a name and number for agents, to call: most of them were BCBS, Aetna, etc. Not sure what they're up to there. If you're not insurable over 40 and you're not insurable after bypass, it seems what insurance companies want us to do is diet and exercise so we never bother them with any kind of bill at all.

I read a statistic that banded patients on an average, lose 55% of their excess body weight after 2 years. I've also read that gastric bypass patients have a window of opportunity to lose weight during an 18-24 month period. After that, the weight stops coming off. My question is this, can banded patients continue to lose weight after 2 years or does the weight loss stop like gastric bypass patients? I don't think I can go through surgery and accept a loss of 55% of my excess weight. Is there more hope than that? Thanks in advance if you can offer me some personal insight!

Ok statistics are just that stats.. SOme people dont work their band.. that is for sure. I personally had orientation november 4 2008 surgery the 3/31/09 and i am down 85 lbs already... It does take a lot of Drive and dedication but it can be done. I have lost already more then 75% of my excess, and expect to loose the rest. It just ALLL depends on you:D So yes tehre is hope!

It's now been 10 months since my RNY gastric bypass surgery. Zero complications, zero struggles and a lot of weight gone! I started out at 306 and as of this morning I am 176! WOW!! I am 5'9 so that puts me just 11 pound short of goal. If anyone has any questions regarding RNY surgery just ask. Its not as scary as you've been led to believe.

Fianc? wishes I wouldn't have surgery...
The_Joker replied to The_Joker's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I want to thank you all again for responding to my post! It has taken almost a month, but he has finally come around. He made the statement last week that he had been thinking about the surgery and decided that he wanted what would make me happy, regardless of whether that included the surgery or not. I don't know what changed his mind, whether he saw my dogged determination to have it or the fact that I was no longer involving him in the process because of our fights, but he FINALLY changed his attitude. I got my approval last week, and the date is scheduled for November 19th. He actually seemed happy for me when I told him the date, so maybe he actually means it.:wink2: Good luck and God bless to all the rest of you with your process. -

Congrats!!!!! I have SoCal Kaiser too.... I don't start Options until 7/26, hoping to be sleeved in November. That is great that you have successfully jumped through all of Kaiser's hoops! Best of luck to you on your journey -
In my endless Quest for understanding as I prepare to have VSG myself I am curious if anyone ever regretted their decision to have this surgery? I have seen plenty of people regret the lapband and a few regret gastric bypass (RNY, DS, etc). Did you regret it? Or maybe not regret the surgery, but regret any aspect or wish it was different? Please share your experiences....

Just Joined The Site Post Op Lap Band
Grizzly Bear posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Greetings to all, I am a 43 year old single man living in Staten Island, NY. I had a lap band installed on 8/16/2012 which would have been my grandmother's 101 birthday if she were alive. I chose this date because I felt she would be watching over me. Also, it was exactly 5 months after my first visit with Dr. Marina Kurian of NYU Langone Med. Center in NYC, NY. Also, the number 4 has been prominent in my life and I consider it a lucky number. 8/16/2012 are all multiples of 4. I was 320 when I went to Dr. Kurian, lost about 10 pounds on the liquid diet to prepare me for the surgery and now I am at 292. My goal is to get al least to 200 pounds if not less. I lost my wife, Tracy, on April 4, 2011 exactly 2 years and two months from our wedding day. In about 8 months I gained 60 pounds from eating and depression after she died. It was the heaviest I have ever been. I decided in February 2012, I decided I wanted to be healthy and decided on weight loss surgery because dieting failed me. I wanted a R n Y Gastric Bypass but my personal physician suggested the lap band because he had one done at NYU Langone Medical Center. Well, that's enough for now. If there is anything you want to know, feel free to email me or respond to this post. Also, feel free to check out my blog website, www.grizzlybearspeaks.com. Cordially, Rob "Grizzly Bear" Bennett -
5 pounds until I reach my goal weight of 127. Surgiversary November 28th 2018 so plenty of time left to kick these pounds to the curb. And as always I thank my ex for allowing me to keep using this before photo since it’s the only one of my almost highest weight I have! 😂

Post Sleeve Pre Bypass Limbo
charpower replied to BJLS's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
No I have not had any type of bariatric related surgery. My gastric bypass the schedule for January 23, 2018. I’ve had heart surgery in the past and hernia repair is well a few other things I had a hysterectomy in 2013 due to cancer. I wish that I had thought that bariatric surgery was and option for me back then because I may not have had some of those surgeries anyway. But I can’t live in the past I have to look towards the future so as of now bariatric surgery the beginning of 2018 and hopefully much better health moving forward. -
Sleeping post gastric bypass surgery
kathleen0909 posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I am 3 weeks out from gastric bypass surgery and I am struggling with being able to sleep. Melatonin did nothing. Do hormonal shifts contribute to this? I’ve never had trouble sleeping lol. The only thing that works is taking .25 mg of Xanax but I don’t want to live on that. -
I am 6 years out, with no complications. I have gained a little bit of weight back, my fault, but I have zero regrets. I do not miss the pain from standing or walking, not being able to find clothes that looked nice, the way people used to dismiss me at a glance. I have two close friends who had the band and have BOTH gotten a sleeve due to complication from that. They had serious medical problems associated with the band and serious regrets as a result. I cannot imagine anyone regretting bypass. It was a lifesaver for me in more ways than one.
-
I am 7.5 months post op. I have had zero complications and no regrets. I am 1 lb shy of losing 100 and 46 more to go. The absolute only regret I have is not having this surgery 10 years earlier! I had gastric bypass and am very satisfied with my choice.

One thing I have noticed
Mrs.FullerRN replied to Mel1071's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I can spot someone in public who has had gastric bypass. They always look tired, anemic, have large calves and very saggy skin on their arms and neck. Maybe I'm nuts but I swear I see it all the time! I'm not bashing anyone who choses bypass, just noting my observations. -

I was thinking that too. My sister had bypass and she looks older and more sickly. I think its b/c of the malabsorption and loss of nutrients. She doesn't take her vitamins like she should.
