What has been your weight loss?
BetsyB replied to 4them's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My doctor doesn't base decisions regarding whether I need fill only on my loss. It's only one part of the equation. Why? Because if I eat the way he recommends, I will lose whether I have restriction or not. He takes into account how I feel, as well. It really is important to consider hunger in addition to loss. hair loss really isn't due to rapid weight loss. It's due to an interruption of the hair growth cycle by trauma. In this case, the trauma is anesthesia and surgery. They interrupt the growth cycle, and the evidence becomes apparent a few months later. It happens for most of us, regardless of how much we lose, whether we eat enough Protein, and so on. As "insurance," it's not a bad idea to ensure that you do get adequate protein and Fluid, as well as Biotin and zinc. Using a shampoo/condition system like Nioxin can help, too. But mostly, these things just let us reassure ourselves we're doing what we need to do to prevent undue loss; our bodies still go through the changes, and ultimately recover, and hair growth resumes as normal. ETA: My loss is slowing now, but I consistently lost 10 pounds a month for the first 8 months I was banded. Now I lose that in 6-8 weeks or so. Because my doctor gives banding patients the same dietary guidelines as his bypass patients, this does not surprise him at all--it's what he likes to see. (Banding rates are slower because we don't have the malabsorption that bypass patients do, but your loss doesn't strike me as outrageously fast.) Your loss is not what one would expect at the year mark for bypass. It makes me wonder how much experience the practitioner who does your fills has with either procedure. -
I'm praying I won't have any. I'm just going to eat that protein, take lots of biotin, and remind myself that it's temporary if/when it happens. I'll do updos or something.

Yes. This did happen to me early on and occasionally still happens. My doctor and I found out it was when I had not eaten enough. So I started eating every 4-5 hours and that helped "cure" it. My doctor said because I'd been insulin resistant for so many years my sugar was bottoming out even though my blood work and A1C were normal. If I get out of my routine or do something extremely physical without eating I almost pass out. I try to eat the same times every day so my body knows it will get a steady source of calories. I don't mean grazing either. I mean planned out meals or Snacks that fit within your calorie and Protein requirements. I also always carry an emergency snack with me. Protein Bars or Jerky in my purse, glovebox and desk drawer. Hope this helps! It can be scary. HW 290+/SW 261/GW 160/CW 159

"Administrative Fee"
Mimilou2004 replied to FLbandgirl1985's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It sounds like highway robbery to me. I have heard of these program fees before and think that amount of money is crap. There are other fine surgeons out there who charge nothing extra or just a few hundred. Please keep your options open and check out a few more places. Mimi -
Room For Veggies/full Feeling Down The Road
wishes replied to bnorms's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yeah, I never have room for veggies at a meal unless I eat them first, but I only do that at restaurants. 95% it is protein first with no room left, and veggies for snacks. I am 8 months out. -
Protein and thank you!

I drink that too! It reminds me of jolly ranchers. I add crushed ice and mio drops to give it more flavor. The shakes were making me sick so now I stick with liquid Protein and boost Sent from my SM-G920P using the BariatricPal App -
Daily nutrition facts?
JamieLogical replied to Wannabeamotherof9's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I've found I don't really have room for veggies at all (5 months post-op) and just focus on getting my protein in and taking all of my vitamins and supplements religiously. I've had bloodwork done twice post-op (once at 2 months and once at 4 months) and everything has come back in normal ranges both times. My doctor was so pleased that she has said I can wait until 8 months for my next bloodwork. So despite the lack of veggies, I am apparently getting the nutrition I need. -
Daily nutrition facts?
JamieLogical replied to Wannabeamotherof9's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You should talk to your nutritionist. Mine would not give any specific numbers for anything other than protein. She wants me to have 85-100 grams of protein per day. -
Daily nutrition facts?
Recycled replied to Wannabeamotherof9's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
With the limited space in the sleeve, I just concentrated on getting in as much Protein as I could each time. Didn't leave much if any room for anything else. Hence, my mantra......Eat protein first......Oh, and hydrate....constantly....as in, all day long. -
Same here with the fatigue. The last few times I walked around 1-2 miles, (like today) I've come home completely exhausted. I could barely stay standing up, and was asleep no sooner than hitting the couch. I've basically felt like I've had zero stamina since surgery on 7/21. My doctor said this is completely normal, especially since I am not yet able to get all my protein in.

One week out and don't have any strength. Went out today to Dr follow-up. Brought protein drink with me but I still felt like crap when I was brought home . Had to sleep. Anyone else still dragging around?

Can't Get In Enough Protein
Gracious_woman replied to LucyLuDiva's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I agree the first 3 weeks are tough. Protein drinks and sugar free popsicles is what I lived on the first 2 weeks then went to stew that was pureed down to liquid in week 3. Don't get worried it is all normal. Get down as much protein and Water as you can. It gets better as time progress. THIS IS A SLOW PROCESS your body is healing and getting used to the new dynamics of your stomach. -

I got popsicle sleeves (narrow, long ziploc type bags) and mixed up Syntrax lemonade flavor to put in them and freeze. Yummy popsicles with Protein. Got me through the first couple of days when it was so hard to get anything down. -

New bee .... I am afraid it will not work for me
geets replied to themonk4u's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
You’re making the right choice, I had R-n-Y July 2017. I’ve gone from 89kgs to 65kgs ( 198 lbs - 140 lbs) been maintaining my weight for over 18 months now and yes it’s possible ! I also ridiculed my fat body, it was a form of protection, we’re just saying it before the other person does !! Surgery was the kick start and then the nutritional advise (tool) has kept me at maintenance. I’ve had blips at Christmas time, been scared each time thinking that my appetite has increased and my stomach has got bigger too. But nope, I go back to small diet and appetite, it’s such a great feeling, being in control 🙌🏽 I loved carbs like potatoes and bread to make me feel sated. I have 1 slice of bread a day now and potatoes maybe once every 2/3 weeks, i love the fact I’m not using carbs for comfort anymore. I do have naughty days when I want a bag of crisps/chips, in which case I’ll buy a bag of roasted nuts, that way at least I’m getting some protein whilst being naughty. ! Protein has been very challenging for me as I’m vegetarian, my diet has never been dairy based but it is now. My tummy is still quite small, I can’t eat huge or even ‘normal’ portions. I’m not on hypertension drugs anymore. I love being able to buckle my sandals and tying shoe laces. 😆 I can’t believe I was carrying a ‘suitcase’ (23kg excess fat/weight) around for 30yrs. When I go on holiday, my suitcase feels very heavy carrying it to car, then to check in, to think I was carrying that around with me daily... crazy and scary for 30 years. Telling people - I didn’t tell my family as I worried that if I didn’t lose weight I’d be ashamed. But, one does lose weight and you will ! Don’t stress about that, this surgery does work and using the tools that you have learnt help you to be sucessful in the future. I was nervous too, but it’s great being on the other side now Good luck ! -
Hi, don't feel bad I weighed myself this morning also and I was up 2lbs... I beleive in my situation, I've been really contispated.. LOL and I've had to take a stool softne, I beleive the powder protein has me like this, I've still been on powder protein becasue I haven't been able to cosume the 60 grams of protein on meats alone... My stomach has been hurting for a couple of days.. I have an appt today with the dietican and I'm going to ask her how can I get more fiber into the diet.. You might be experiencing the same thing, or something similar. I also take a water pill (prescribed) from the dr and I take it every other day, so I didn't take it on yesterday (memorial) day so I must have extra fluid in me... At first I felt really bad also, but I'm fine.. Be encouraged it's ok... Hang in there and keep doing what you;re doing you might need to add a little more food also, becasue sometimes your body holds on to the food when it's so little...

Did a little bit of reflecting over the weekend, and I've come to realize that I LOVE that I had a 2 week Protein shake only liquid diet. Yes, you read that right. This coming from the girl that kicked, screamed, and complained through most of the preop diet. I know that some people are not required (or are required to do the liquid only diet and choose not to), but boy am I glad that my surgeon requires it. Here's why. I truly appreciate every piece of food that goes into my mouth...most importantly the healthy stuff. And of course, it did jump start my weightloss. Before the band and before the preop diet, I wasn't a binger. Yes, I ate too much food, but not bingeing. And I am a complete carb queen...and chocolate fanatic, sugar addict, lol you get the point. Vegetables, whole foods and healthy foods were not a part of my daily diet. I even counted ice cream as a milk product when on Weight Watchers. Most days of the week I ate ALL my meals at fast food restaurants. This morning when I ate a hardboiled egg with 1 oz of low fat cheddar cheese, salt and pepper, I was content. My insides felt good (weird, I know lol). Now if I were to rewind back to May of this last year, I would've had a Dunking Donuts croissant with eggs and cheese and a medium iced caramel latte with whipped cream for Breakfast and I never felt full or content. I know I have the band to thank for this, but it's more than that. Being "deprived" of the garbage food I was eating really helped me gain perspective. My body was created perfectly by God (sorry if others believe otherwise, don't want to create waves here) and I was slowly destroying what He gave me. I feel back on track and happy with my new way of eating and my new way of thinking. Yes, at the beginning of my recovery time I did think "omgosh what did I do?" because of the discomfort I was in on my second day post op, but it did pass and I felt brand new on day 5. So anyone that is about to start or in the middle of their preop diet, YOU CAN DO IT! It truly does get easier, I promise you that! And once the preop diet is over, I hope you can relate to what I've said. Best of luck everyone

Special K protein shakes
PATCHELTON replied to sharie3's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I agree with the other poster that they are way too high in sugar. Check with your dietician on what your doctor recommends. A large portion of that 180 calories is the sugar. Your 10 g protein are only 40 calories. I try to minimize fat, salt, and sugar. For Protein shakes, ready to drink type, I use Worldwide Protein Shakes. They come in 21 and 35g protein. Cheapest place to get them is Trader Joe's. Target has started carrying the 21g recently in 4 packs, around $6, in vanilla, chocolate, and Cookies n' Cream. Trader Joe sells both 21 and 35 in just Chocolate and Vanilla. The 21's are about $1.69 each and the 35's about $2.29. Vitamin Shoppe only carries the 35's but in all the flavors (Vanilla, Chocolate, strawberry, banana Cream an Cookies n' Cream). Individually they are $2.79 each but if you buy a 12 pack for $27.99 that works out to about $2.33 each, pretty close to Trader Joe's. I order them online at vitaminshoppe.com and they often have specials with free shipping or if you sign up for their rewards program you get coupons for money off orders. GNC carries 35's in Vanilla and Chocolate in the stores, all flavors online, but they are the most expensive, $2.99 a can. WW shakes only have 1g sugar in the 35's (I get them from Vitamin Shoppe), 1g fat, 0.5 sat fat, 10mg cholesterol, 2g carbs in the 160 cal flavors and 140 of those calories are protein. Some of the flavors are 170 cals and maybe have anothe g of sugar but I don't think any are more than 3. I am reading from the can of Vanilla that I drank today. If you are looking for a way to get in more protein, I would suggest the WW shakes, plus you are getting very little sugar and fat. Oh and the sodium on the can of Vanilla is 150mg and Potassium 240mg. I have trouble with low potassium so I am always looking for stuff that has more of that than sodium. I hope this helps, and good luck on your journey. Please feel free to share the above info with your dietician. I used them before and after surgery I still drink them at least 5 days a week. I bring them to work and have them first thing. You may find you are tighter in the morning after a few fills, and this works for me. I wait about an hour then have Breakfast, usually protein Cereal from kaysnaturals.com and/or yogurt (I mix my own--fat free Greek yogurt from Trader Joe--comes in 2 cup container--22 g protein per cup 0 fat, 6g sugar--I divide into four half cup servings--11 g protein 0 fat 3 sugar--for fruit I mix in Smuckers sugar free preserves 10 cal tbsp, plus some cinnamon) So with the shake (35), cereal (10) and yogurt (11) I manage 56g protein before lunch. -

spainter2009 replied to Bingcherry's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was about 2 weeks out and I was hungry I said it was head hunger most. I am not 10 months out and I get hungry my tummy will tell me HEY I NEED TO EAT !!!!. I have lost 80 lbs and I didn't lose hair. I eat a lot of Protein and take my Biotin religiously. But everyone is different.

I'm 3 1/2 months out and haven't lost hair yet. I always get 60-80 grams of protein daily. The medical term for this kind of hair loss is Telogen Effluvium. It seems more people experience this than not.
