    Feeling Let down

Sorry you are feeling let down. However I am sure that the surgeon has your best interests at heart. Surgery is dangerous and the higher your BMI the more dangerous it is . A BMI of 68 is extremely high.Far better to lose the weight prior to surgery than to die from complications on the table. It is also normal in the US to have to undergo a 6 month supervised diet prior to undergoing surgery . This proves to the insurance company that you are serious and have tried your best and are not just looking for a quick fix. you are not the first person i have heard of that has to do a 4 week preop diet. The purpose of this part of the process is to help shrink the liver. When you are obese the liver is enlarged and fatty. If it is not reduced in size prior to surgery you run the risk of having to have open as opposed to laparoscopic surgery or of it getting damaged during surgery which is highly dangerous. If your Dr suggested a bypass you need to find out why do not just dismiss his suggestion out of hand.Yes there are some Dr's that push bypass because it is their preferred surgery but your Dr may feel that a band would not suit you. With weight loss surgery there is no one size fits all - different surgeries suit different people depending on their types of eating.Bands are generally recommended for people that eat large quantities but do not have as much of an issue with sweets. bypasses are recommended where it is felt that malabsorption is also required. There is another option - the sleeve.I have even heard of people having a bypass and a band combined. Price should not be your deciding factor when choosing a surgeon. I understand that it is important but it is more important to choose an experienced surgeon that has done lots of the procedure that you choose and that has a good track record. Their are countless horror stories of things going wrong when using a cheap or inexperienced surgeon. That is not to say that all surgeons offering cheap surgery are bad but you do need to be careful. This board is a great place for you to vent, get support and do research.Read some of the threads from people that had revisions from lapband to bypass to help you with your decision as well. Wishing you all the best.

    Puffy under eyes after weighloss

I've noticed my dark circles are way worse after weight loss, and I do get a bit puffy there. But I have deep set eyes, and my kids do too and we all have that allergic, sinusy type constitution too - asthma, eczema, hayfever in our family. So dark circles are kind of there to stay. But yes, they are WAY worse with weight loss because I've got no fat left on my face and obviously with age, you lose a lot of the fat from your face anyway, my face is a lot leaner than it is when I last weighed 70kg in my early 20's. Oh well, at least I dont have wrinkles. All you can do is use a good eye cream, there's apparently one or two really amazing ones out there on the market but I dont have the funds to be spending over $200 on eye cream personally. For me, its the hollowness that causes the problem, and there's not a really good cosmetic surgery option for that, it all consists of fillers which cost an arm and a leg and dont last anyway.

Has anyone heard of Pro Nos .....

I looked it up on the internet and it is for body builders. It has 290 calories per serving for the vanilla and 387 for chocolate. It has 42 grams of protein which is a lot. It seems high in calories to me. I use Unjury and it has 100 calories for 20 grams of protein.
  4. Hello. I was banded two and a half years ago. I was 105 pounds overweight. I started out at 248 and now weight 176. I have gained about 6 pounds since January due to being too loose. I just went for a fill a couple of weeks ago. The problem I am having is I just can't seem to lose these last twenty pounds. I stopped losing right around 165 pounds. I keep gaining and losing the same 5 or 6 pounds. I have slacked a little on my exercise, but I am back on it. Before I was rapidly losing 1-2 pounds a week the first year and a half even by not really going by the high Protein low carb rule because I was just not hungry. Now it seems that no matter what I do this weight is not moving. My dietician told me that I should have no more than 25 grams of fat and 60 or under grams of carbs. To me this is almost impossible, being that most low carb foods are high in fat. I cannot exercise 6 days a week because I work a full time job and I have two grade school kids that need my attention. Has anyone else been through this and what helped you lose those last few pounds?

    MAY 15th Surgery Stories

Congratulations on becoming a Banded Bandito! Glad to hear that your pain is lessening day by day. Hope you're able to get some protein and hydration now. Keep up the good work!
  6. My doctor didn't ask me to do a pre-op liquid diet. I was on liquids for 6 weeks after surgery. I don't remember how much I lost before I started eating solid foods, but I do remember I lost 18 pounds in the first two weeks (was only allowed 2 oz 3 times a day plus protein supplements). After the first two weeks, I could have more liquids. I did gain a little bit (a few pounds only) when I started getting more calories, and from what I've heard from others on this site, that's normal. After a week or so, the weight started coming off again. Good luck! I know it seems like there is no way you can make it through the liquid stage. But now that I'm past it, it seems like it flew by!

    Liquid Stage: Fiber?

You could use prune juice for the extra fiber. Also, the high protein, low carb version of the canned shakes from SlimFast have a good amount of fiber in them. I get mine at walmart.
  8. New to this journey but since I've eaten tons of Indian food, I think you should be fine. You should have no problem finding vegetarian foods but I would steer clear of the nans, pooris and other breads. As for Protein, eggs should be in abundance. And if you can't find what you're looking for, ASK! Good luck and have a safe trip.
  9. I am fairly new to being banded; it has been 2 months for me. I know that I am doing something wrong and I need a little push in the right direction. I get up in the morning and my band is tight, so I have my coffee, meds, and a Protein shake. I load the Protein Shake up with 31 grams of protein. I am full until about 3:00, but I am only a tiny bit hungry. I then have a can of flaked chicken which has 16 grams of protein and green Beans. Sometimes I do have admit I am lazy with lunch and I just eat some pieces of cheese, it is only because I am not hungry. At 7:00 when I have dinner I am famished I can eat my 1 1/2 cups of food, and feel almost full. We normally have some sort of meat dish with veggies, or a meat dish with noddles and veggies. But about 1/2 later I am starving and I eat again! I feel like I didn't eat the first meal, I am even hungier the second time. I can't eat as much the second time because I do have restriction and my band does get tight, and a little cranky. (About 1 cup will go down.) I stay full until about 11:00 and then I need another protein shake. This time it only has 23 grams of protein. I don't think I need a fill because I have restriction until 7:00 pm. It is kind of like my band goes on a break during dinner. What's up? Dispite my best of intentions I have turned into a grazier and a monster dinner eater! My tummy really does hurt at 2nd dinner service. Has this happened to anyone else? How can I stop it and get back on track? I did not get the band to skip meals during the day and eat two at night! I need some advice, because I think I am screwing up.

    Barilla Plus

Yes -- I've been using it for several years now and pretty much never buy anything BUT Barilla Plus. I just can't get past how cool it is to have PROTEIN in a 'carb'!!!!!
  11. The liquid diet is so limiting it's hard not to get tired of anything you find thats good my only suggestion is that you just try lots of different flavors of stuff (even stuff you really didn't like before) as a treat and when I'm not planning on putting much else in i drink the chocolate banana Naked Juice protein drinks they are about 480 calories but have the 30g of protein i need but once again I can't eat much else that day....

    Fruits and Veggies

Hi all! I am being banded next Monday! Yippee! I am trying to think ahead about what kinds of fruits and veggies I will be able to eat after I have healed from the surgery and am able to eat solids. I really love fresh fruits and veggies, so after I have my Protein each meal, I want to be able to eat as much fruit and veggies as I can. (Of course, I am not going to over do it or anything, I know not to stretch my stomach!) I heard that asparagus is not a good idea because its stringy... That bums me out because I LOVE it! What if I cut it cross wise really small and chewed it like crazy? Does this also include celery? Its kinda stringy too! What about brocoli and carrots? I really love strawberries, blueberries and green seedless grapes. I know that fruits have a good deal of sugar in them, but are there any that I won't be able to eat anymore? Any advice would help. I am starting to get really nervous and trying to plan stuff out as much as possible to help calm my nerves! Thanks!

    Blood sugar changes ?

I used to have low blood sugars before I became diabetic. The key is to eat protein as much as possible and low carbs. There are also glucose tabs and gel he can take if it gets too low.

    Blood sugar changes ?

I had wondered about this too. I currently take 2 500mg pills of Metformin ER a day and will be banded in 2 weeks. I have been very bad at monitoring my sugar but for the past few days, it's been high and I'm on the protein shake diet right now... so that makes no sense to me. But I will definitely keep a check on it and contact my doctor if/when it starts to go down.

    Day 3 Advice?

It is so strange all the different guidelines. Mine said to drink protein if I feel up to it. That way I burn fat instead of storing due to starvation mode. I'm on full liquids for 2 weeks. Then mushies for 1 week, then soft solids.

Soy Or Lactaid Free Protein Shakes

Herbalife Allergen-free shakes are dairy-, soy-, and gluten-free (they are made with pea, sesame, and rice protein). Full disclosure: I am an Herbalife distributor. My wife and I love the stuff, and the discount is fantastic!
  17. For those of you who drink a Protein shake in the am, how long does it hold you? Since my last fill I am tight and in the mornings I don't really feel like eating something solid, so I decided to give the Protein shakes another try. For the last two days I have drank the Slim Fast High Protein, it has 180 calories, 20 g of protein, 2g of carbs, 2 g of Fiber. The shake taste pretty good and it doesn't give me indigestion like other protein shakes have done so a plus plus. However, about 2 hours after I drink it I am hungry. I drink it around 7 am so by 9 I am starved, but I don't want to eat my snack (greek yogurt) until 10 so that will last until my lunch at 12:30-1. How do the shakes work for you?

    vitamins?

I take the Viactiv vitamins and calcium chews and I really like them (as vitamins go). I get to get a little chocolate fix and its good for me too. Can't ask for much more than that. Viactiv products come in multiple flavors too, so if you don't like one, try another before you write them off. If you belong to a support group that meets regularly, you can have a taste testing with your vitamins, protein shakes and favorite recipes so you can try it before you buy it.

    What will you eat today.

Breakfast was a Protein drink w/ low carb FF milk & a dab of Peanut Butter. lunch will be a half of a baked cajun fish fillet and one tiny, grape-sized baby potato. Snack, if needed, will be Protein Drink. dinner will be diced Chipotle chicken w/ refriend Beans (mix in lime, chiles, and tabasco) and just a dab of sour cream to keep it wet.
  20. I got banded in sept 2007. Had my first fill in Oct (5 wks post op) I was fine for a few weeks then it hit me, couldnt even swallow my spit. this was during thanksgiving and my dr was gone so i suffered for 5 days ended up in hospital for dehydration -- i guess i didnt really understand what was happening to me -- i knew something was wrong obviously but i didnt think it would get as bad as it did... so needless to say i got an unfill. this was dec 1st. I have been fine but started to eat as if i didnt even have the band. just got my second fill friday -- not even as much as my original -- 3cc band now im at 1.2 fill -- and i cant even swallow Water without discomfort. Protein shake -- no way i will try in the morning -- but evenings i can do it but it takes me 20 - 30 minutes to get one shake down. I have lost a couple pounds of course since friday.. so my question is -- do i stick it out and just stay on liquids for a couple weeks and lose weight or do a get slight unfill? :help:
  21. I'm the mom of a Type I diabetic and I've been treating my son's nightime lows for years. The glucose tabs work well because they are pretty much just glucose and get absorbed right away. The best part is you can keep them right by your bed and grab a 4-5 of them without even getting up. After you start feeling a little better, you can get up and make yourself something else. If you really don't like the tabs, any kind of juice can work well. If you buy the little cans or bottles, you can keep them by your bed, too. They'll be warm, but when my son is low..he really doesn't care. You are right, soda is not an option, but you're still going to need the sugar to get your blood sugar back up. Milk does work, but it takes longer than the tabs and fruit juice. Another option is cake icing. We've never used it much, but it was always recommended by the nutritionist. If you are having a hard time eating for whatever reason, the gel cake icing can get absorbed in your cheeks and will raise your blood sugar, too. If i remember correctly, one of the tubes of icing has 15 g of carbs. On a side note...if you are able to manage your Type I diabetes, I suspect you will have great success with your band. That disease doesn't allow anyone to ignore their health or their symptoms. It makes you listen to your body. Cindy

    First Fill and Stuck

My doc wanted me to get off of protein shakes fairly quickly. He wants me to eat, not drink, my calories. I don't drink them much anymore. Sometimes I drink them before or after I work out.

    protein pudding

Someone, I think it was Ghost, posted a recipe to make protein pudding. I think it was to use slim fast instead of milk in the sugar free fat free dry pudding mix, but I can't remember for sure. Does anyone have this recipe?

    anyone juicing?

Because I couldn't even stomach the vitamins my doc suggested Ensure Clear. They have a blueberry pomegranate that I've been able to choke down half a 10oz bottle a day. Tons of proteins and vitamins. It made me feel so much better.
