  1. Hi all! I know there are tons of threads here but I’m curious to hear any stories or tips you all have that’ve gone from the lapband to the RNY. I got my band in 2011 and lost well over 100 pounds but with that came an insane amount of vomiting and inability to keep liquids down. Saline was taken out and the rest was a 91 pound history lol. I have my revision to a RNY next month on my 39th birthday (yay!) and was attracted to it specifically aside from VSG as my doctor explained to me the following; -due to having part of you intestines out, head hunger is still there but reduced a lot in most patients. Is this your experiences as well? -identify and steer 100% clear of slider foods and stick to thicker style foods, meat, fiber outs veggies and if tolerable some breads after a time. Coming from the band world any bread was an automatic upchuck lol. Your thoughts? -success rates from band to RNY are extremely high. I’d love your thoughts and tips! I’d be naive if I thought this would be easy, I did so well on the band for such a good time but the success rates are so low come to find out. I think you’re all amazing and love the advice you all give! We are in this together! Mitchell

    Hunger

9 weeks post op bypass and eat every 2 hours. Some meals are processed quickly, scrambled eggs..., so I follow it an hour later with protein shake.
  3. update..I am getting my band unfilled ~1 month before revision. I am paranoid that I will get something stuck and then it will be irritated at the band site. Looking forward to eating a salad!!! This is becoming more real to me. I am excited and trying not to do the what if's. This site has been very helpful to me. Thank you for sharing your experiences! D.

    Death

That is not accurate. Gastric Sleeve Surgery and Bypass have a less than 1% mortality rate... actually less than gallbladder surgery. Talk to your surgeon about the risks of surgery.
  5. There are February threads on both the sleeve forum and bypass forum. Check them out. Several people have posted their dates.

    revision from band to bypass

i get my revision from sleeve to bypass on tues if you want to keep in touch i'll tell u all about it.
  7. hi all i had a gastric band fitted in nov 2012 and have had numerous problems , fills and defills and even a period of 18months with nothing in my band , i decided to start again in april this year and have fills but having got to 5mls have had to have two defills putting me now at 4mls . i never know from one day to the next how my eating will be , one day i can be pretty ok and the next i may struggle with a yoghurt . i have after some time enquired about revision surgery from my band to the gastric bypass and have plucked up the courage to book a consultation to discuss it properly , i am also seeing my gp this coming tuesday with a view of mentioning it to her amongst other things . i have struggled with my weight pretty much all my life and not a day goes by when it is not in the forefront of my mind , i also suffer with depression , weight being a large part of that since being subjected to bullying re my weight at senior school . So sad am i my favourites tv programmes are about weight loss , especially dr now ! can anyone tell me of their experience with revision in this way , what type of things do you manage to eat ? do you struggle with salads and fruit like me ? is it a case of you plate is a side plate size or smaller but no food groups are a major issue like with me , sorry if this all sounds silly things to ask but i struggle with the heathiest of things which is just miserable and mad , any tips , experiences and advice would be most grateful . thankyou x
  8. I'm 3 1/2 yrs post lapband. No soda is allowed with the lapband because it can cause band erosion or slippage. I occasionally will have a sip of hubbys soda if we're out to eat, but basically don't drink it anymore. My band is slipped now (thanks to my frequent vomiting) and I'm revising to a sleeve soon. From what I've been reading, they say no to soda because of discomfort. banders are sposed to have discomfort with soda too, but I have none. So is it medically ok to drink soda but it's up to the individual on whether it causes pain - or is it across the board a no-no? Just curious....
  9. I have the plication but have never heard of this revision. To my understanding your stomach is reduced to the same size... Was yours too big?

    Who's had their Port Replaced?

I have to have mine replaced and I was told it would be $8000. I only paid $9500 for the whole thing. I have decided to have a revision to DS and give up the band.

    Who's had their Port Replaced?

I just had my port replaced a couple of weeks ago, they discovered that there was a hole in the tubing near the port. My insurance did cover the revision. I haven't gotten a fill since the revision, sure hope it works this time.
  12. You may want to consider gastric bypass. I had acid reflux before my bypass. It was one of the main reasons why I chose bypass over sleeve. Sent from my SM-N910V using the BariatricPal App
  13. So I have my approval, but no date. Waiting on the results of my EGD. I have Barretts Esophagus and am hoping that we can proceed with the bypass but fear has me in its grip...woke up having a nightmare that they told me I have stomach cancer or some weird disease. I normally don't have nightmares but when I do have one it has to be so real!!

Band to Sleeve and other questions!

Hi drewr, I think I would opt for the sleeve. Having lived with the band for 6 years. I haven't done very well with it and now it seems cannot find the "sweet spot" again. It only took once to be too tight and have to get unfilled. Now it seems like I'm in every 3-4 weeks getting filled and unfilled and filled trying to hit that sweet spot and it just doesn't seem to be there. I'm hoping to be able to get a revision from the band to the sleeve in January or February 2016. But, some people have had great success with the band too...It's an individual thing. I'd definitely go to a seminar and ask a ton of questions. Good luck to you!

Band to Sleeve and other questions!

Bandproblems, If nothing is going through and you are completely unfilled, it sounds like you have more damage than what they can see. In my honest opinion and the little time I experienced in between being unfilled and revision, you will gain your weight back, even with regular exercise. Your old eating habits will come back, it's so easy to find that old friend again. One of my concerns was once sleeved I would lose the same amount of weight as I did initially with the band which would leave me skin and bones, but, it doesn't work that way. You will lose weight quickly while you are on the pre-op diet and then the healing stage post op diet, but, once you build up to regular meals your weight loss stabilizes. Your body weight is at a very different stage now before you had the band done and the body now responds differently to weight loss, so, no you won't disappear. lol As far as the stomach size they leave behind for a revision patient depends on how much surgical scar tissue the band has created, thus, this is different for every person, but, the stomach size difference is minimal. Google "bougie size" and you will see the difference in the circumference on the sizes. Once I completed the progression diet after surgery and began eating normally again, I eat the same amount as when I had the band which is about 1/2 a cup. In time, your sleeve stretches a bit and you eat a bit more. What I've researched is usually 1 cup. Last, a UGI only shows if things are going through or not. If you doc hasn't mentioned yet, I would ask for an EGD to see how much damage you may have. Depending on what kind of damage the band has done or doing, your doc may be able to get your insurance to cover the whole revision. Keep us posted. jake

    Help, I'm confused

There's been some patients that had part of the hospital bills from complications covered by insurance, but others have had complete exclusion of any complication bills being paid by insurance that do not cover the initial procedure. It seems it's all in how the hospital bills the charges, and how the doctor handles the complications. It's a tough situation to be in as I would not want bypass, and I would have self-paid for my revision if insurance would not have come through for me.

HELP PLEASE! 15 y/o post op!

Hey JT. I HATE protein drinks but my doc recommended one that I really kind of like. The brand name is Premier Protein and they are ready-made drinks in cardboard bottles. They have 4 flavors I think. I have the chocolate and vanilla ones. They have 30g of protein in them, which is awesome! Maybe you can try those if you haven't already done so. I had my bypass on Aug 4 and am still having problems with solid foods so i'm on these things now. Good luck!!
  18. I am 4 days post op had band removed to bypass and the Dr said the bank was in an akward position against my liver and the skin to cut through from bypass was tough but i was doing fine until day 4 and stopped being able to swallow much at all got a slight fever felt horrible Dr done lots of tests including ct feels confident this is from inflammation and will get better soon I am still on hospital worried and depressed. Has any body else e experienced this?
  19. I was sleeved on 10/23, I had no complications (knock on wood), getting my water and protein in, gas was decreasing, somewhat regular BM,, pain was steadily decreasing. However, yesterday the pain became worse and steadily increased. Today was no better and it got worse. I went in to my PCP, (who btw had bypass be same surgeon), from there I was sent to the ER (at surgeon's request). They gave me pain meds which only took the edge off the pain and conducted CT scan. They said no leak, no hernia. The CT scan was all clear. So they are thinking it is muscular pain (only hurts when I move), and sent me home with more pains meds. I am very relieved it was nothing serious; however, I am curious if anyone else has experienced anything like this?

    tattoos

I was thinking of getting one after I reach my goal and get a tummy tuck. My port incision is about 2 inches above and an inch to the left of where my port actually is so any revisions won't matter. And if for some reason they move the port somewhere else completely, the tattoo will still have sentimental value. I was thinking about getting "Fill Here. Saliene Only" like it says "unleaded only" under the gas cap. I think it would be a fun conversation starter when I'm skinny enough to wear a bikini! If anyone has a port tattoo, post up pics!! Having my doubts

Okay. First of all I think what you are having to go through is a bunch of dog crap. No one should have to wait 6 months for this surgery. You obviously cannot do well on a diet or you wouldn't be obese!!! So what, that figure your going to be able to do well now? What crap I am so sorry you have the waiting period. If it was me- and this is just me! I would stuff my bra with weights on the first weight in and take one out every time. Because I don't think it's right to withhold a life saving surgery from someone because they can't go on a diet- which is why they need it in the first place. This surgery is amazing and you Should do whatever it takes to make it happen. Try and do well most of the time when you can. Read the book intuitive eating. It will help you find a good steady flow on maintaining your weight so you don't gain. Make some food choices but don't fall into deprivation or you will binge and gain weight. Wait the 6 months. Try and incorporate some healthy habits and try to get on track with your smoking. It's hard to quit coping mechanisms and it's hard to make life changes but you can do it. Smoking needs to go because it will destroy your Health and it won't work after surgery. But give yourself a break okay. You are making progress and sometimes you have to take a step back and try again. As far as trying to lose a bunch of weight before surgery- if my doctor had requires that I would have looked elsewhere. Seriously. If you could lose weight so easily why in the heck would you do this!! My doctor did not require a weight loss test. I had to meet with him and fast the day before and that was it. He is smart enough to realize that we can't loose weight. Duh. Why put us through more mental and emotional torture??? You should not do that to yourself. Find a new doctor and ask them what their requirements are up front. If they require weightloss pass!!! Especially if you don't think you can do it. Some people can and good for them. For me I was so good and carb addicted it would have sent me into a binge for sure which leads to emotional upset and feelings of failure and self worth. I said no more. Obesity is a disease and your struggling with it. Be kind to yourself. Now that I have had bypass all of my food cravings and need for sugar have vanished. Food is wonderful but I don't need it to be happy and it doesn't run my life. This surgery gave me my life back and you need to go for it. You will not regret it I promise. Do whatever you need to do for YOUR best interest.
  23. Just trying to relax here in my hotel room. Suprisingly, I am not too nervous, just hoping to not be in too much pain when I wake up. Had my preop testing completed this afternoon and the driver will be picking my husband and I up at 7 tomorrow morning to take us to meet w/Dr. Aceves before surgery. Prayers are welcomed and please make room for me on the looser's bench! Much love, erika
  24. I will say a prayer for you but I know you won't need it! I had my lap band surgery in MX in 2010 but I am having my revision to sleeve here in FL. I had such a good experience in MX and was amazed at the hospital/doctor but didn't want the hassle of traveling with this surgery as I live in FL and it took forever to get to TJ. Anyway, good luck and let us know how you make out. I am scheduled for 6/17!
