Please post about your complications
Alexandra replied to gadgetlady's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Guile, that's not a "complication," that's a normal bandster learning event. You're not going to cause slippage from a few PBs, believe me. If that were the case there simply wouldn't be any successful bandsters. You're doing fine, healing up, and this transition to solid food will take a little learning. EAT SLOW, chew thoroughly, and keep your chin up! -
I'm scheduled for surgery on 1/9, and I'm trying to get a handle on what kinds of complications people have been seeing. I know for the most part everyone is happy with their results even if they've had complications; I'm just wondering what minor and major issues are potentially on the horizon -- and if, in the long run, virtually everyone has some issues. Those of you who have had the band for years, please post too! Thanks much

Annoyed but i have to laugh about this ... Has this ever happen before ?
Djmohr replied to newbie_2025's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
To answer your question about funny stares, the answer is yes. Get used to it. Keep in mind food servers mostly want to make sure you are satisfied with your meal. The best thing you can do is tell them to bring a to go box when they bring your food because you will be taking most of it home. In terms of eating out at this point, if you feel up to it and it makes you feel better go for it. You are a grown up and know what the rules are in terms of what you can or should not do. You decide whether or not you will be successful and you decide whether or not you will have complications from doing what you are not supposed to. At 3.5 weeks I was barely able to get down 2 tablespoons of puréed food. I certainly was not in a position to to drink wine nor eat and drink at the same which is one of the rules. I wish you the best of luck and hope all goes well in the future. -
Why is my Pre-op diet so long?
IcanMakeit replied to laurenella82's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I wasn't put on a pre-op diet at all, but on my own I was doing the same thing your doctor recommends for the five months preceding the surgery. I lost 42 lbs and had a very smooth surgery with no complications. Correlation does not equal causation but perhaps the two things are related? Maybe your doctor is on to something. -
I was sleeved on July 1st and chose to do one month before on a liquid diet. I felt great going into surgery and had no complications. I was told it was a head start on weight loss and I am glad I did it that way.

I haven't told many people about mine yet. I'm waiting to make sure the consultation, pshyc and lab work is all good. I'm pretty sure it will be but just in case, I am keeping mum. My hubby is afraid for me to have the surgery and I keep telling him most people don't have complications, but he is worried. Says I don't eat hardly anything as it is, and they are going to do something to make me eat less. Thinks I am going to starve to death. I guess he doesn't pay much attention to what I eat during the day. It's not a lot of food, just bad choices, but I'm working on that everyday as hard as I can right now. I'm just going to take it one day at a time and work on what I can. You are doing great!! Sipping water at a shower is very very hard to do. One more and you are home free. I am so excited for you, because I know how much and bad I want to have mine done. I'll be praying for you this week. Let me know if there is anything at all that I can do for you, I'm not too far away if you need something. My consultation is just over a week away.. Hopefully I'll have the chapters of paperwork filled out before then. Man it's a lot of things to fill out.. Take care of you and keep me posted.:bored0:

Hi Nopatience, Welcome to VST. This is a great website with very helpful people. I really get it about the last five pounds. I'm at Kaiser Richmond. I have what I hoped would be my final pre-surgery weigh in tomorrow morning. Sunday I was 229, great. This morning, 230.6, not so great. I can't believe this is happening. I'm so ready to get to goal and get a case manager appointment so I can get a surgery date. I've eaten very light today and I'm headed down to the gym now to walk as long as my ankle allows (surgery last year). After walking, I'll do the weight machines. I'm determined to be at 230 (with clothes) in the morning. Carolyn, there have been studies that suggest that people that lose 10% of their weight pre-op have less complications post-op. I think that Kaiser really goes with those type of studies. It also makes sure that people are really serious about doing the work both pre and post op. For me, it's given me time to really explore. I thought I wanted the band but discovered in my month before meeting my surgeon that I would only consider the Sleeve. I'm glad I had time to really figure it out and be sure. That said, I want my Sleeve TOMORROW! :001_tongue:

I had a lapband placed on Oct. 10, 2005. I lost 80 pounds but found there were always foods I could not tolerate. Foods were always getting stuck, despite following all the rules. I had my surgery in Reno and moved to Los Angeles. I work in the health care field, and we have a bariatric program. I notified our bariatric supervisor that I was vomiting all the time. She sent me to my PCP. She sent me to a surgeon who was intimidated by the UM department. They did an endoscopy and the GI specialist said it slipped. Then, I had an UGI. They said it was just high. I continued to vomit all the time and the surgeon was afraid to challenge the MD in charge of UM. I chose to change medical groups and had another UGI because I knew surgery would never happen at my place of employment. Hindsight is 20/20. I should have insisted they submit it and then appeal. I had a physiological reason for the medical complications and could have qualified for revision. I saw a surgeon who knew to remove the fluid from the band. That stopped the fear that I would choke to death. I was getting ready to have the band removed and have a VSG when Kaiser notified me the doctor could only remove the band. I was told to see another surgeon at Kaiser and on June 24, 2011, I did that. I was 155 pounds instead of the 134 I had gotten down to. He said I had to have surgery that next Monday, but due to my esophagus being so thin with the possibility of erosion, he said the VSG couldn't be done for a year. I had the band removed and was I depressed. I was told I would gain 50 pounds and to be careful with what I ate. I have a surgery date finally, but I got a call on Friday asking me to phone the surgeon's office. Of course, my imagination is running wild. Are they changing the date or are they simply scheduling the pre op visit? I decided to repeat the bariatric classes. I am not learning much, but I figure anything new that I learn is a plus. I keep having to purchase larger clothes, and what I have for casual wear and professional wear for work is no longer fitting. I have feelings of self hate, and I know that is not healthy. Ultimately, I want to be healthy and lean. I know it will happen soon, but the waiting game is a nightmare. There is one other girl in my class that also had to have a band removed. Misery sure does like company. Anyway, that is my surgery of success, failure, and then the hope of future success again. I am glad I found this forum and will visit it frequently. Joyce

Will keep everything crossed for you! It isn't an easy surgery or without its risks. But those are balanced - outweighed?- by the benefits. Yes, there are potentially things that can go wrong but for many of us, keeping doing the same with our eating was going to result in an early end... There are a few people on here who have had a really tough time post-op, with serious complications, and even they say they are glad they have been sleeved. There are some who think it's the worst thing they could have done and bitterly regret it. Just be informed and aware of what you are getting into and you will make the right decision for you. Good luck - but it is exciting :-)))))

I went to St. Vincent in Cleveland. They had my insurance approved within a few days. Their advocate Maria is awesome and the staff! Dr. Nowak performed my surgery 9/26. I have no complications and my scars are almost non-existent. Down 115 lbs.

t-bird, that's great, you are doing really good! I will get this checked out, possibly an x-ray under fluro. the dr usually does this at one year to check on the band. hope there's no complications. I still need my band. I have dreams of eating my Polish food or any foods. sometimes I get depressed about this then I look in the mirror!

lapband or bypas? I need help to decide,
Stephy5 replied to mm0142's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My only opinion is do your research and see what you can live with. Each surgery has its own challenges and potential problems. Make sure you know what it is going to take to keep yourself healthy. Not just losing weight. I lost my sister as a complication to a bypass surgery and honestly it was all her fault, she choose not to take care of herself the way she needed to and had a doctor who didn't guide her well. As for erosion, I talked to several doctors in my area and they all said the same thing, there was a higher rate in the old version of the band. The newer version, Yes it still can happen but it happens a whole lot less. Good luck on making your decision and keep us posted. -
lapband or bypas? I need help to decide,
Phranp replied to mm0142's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am not sure why losing insurance coverage after having lapband and subsequent complications is any worse than losing insurance coverage and having complications from any other WLS; but I guess they were trying to steer you in a direction other than lap band. I also don't understand why they would focus on someone no longer having insurance. Seems weird that they would go there, but maybe I'm just not looking at it the way the seminar instructor was, who knows? I have not heard of "a lot" of people experiencing erosion from the lap band. The couple of times I read about it on this forum it was considered "rare". That said, there is a forum here called "Lap Band Complications", you might want to do a search on that forum for "erosion" to read about it from people that have experienced it first hand. It might be helpful to you. Just a suggestion. I am heading toward the 2 year mark with my band and I am quite satisfied. I realize that not everyone can say that, but isn't that true of almost anything? I wish you the best on your journey to find the surgery that is right for you. ~Fran -
Anyone with a Stricture?
Tiffykins replied to Morgandobes's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have a 32fr, and have not had anything close to a stricture. From what I've read, the strictures were seen with smaller than a 32fr. It seems the most "popular" sizes are from a 32fr to a 40fr for most stand alone sleeve procedures. I haven't read about many strictures, and from what I have read that it's not a common complication. Apparently, it's when scar tissue grows and interferes with the passing of food/liquid into the stomach, or a twist in the tubular shape of the sleeve. I'm not sure what the percentage is on patients that experience them. -
I am struggling please help
Smanky replied to Muwins's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You said it's a little over a week. This is super-early days after MAJOR surgery, especially since you had a hital hernia repair as well. I had a hernia repair with mine and felt like I'd been hit by a truck for a solid two weeks. But it comes with the territory, it's gonna hurt and it's gonna take a few weeks to settle. Complications suck, but the difficult early months and boring food restrictions are short lived. Try distracting yourself, and most of all, be patient let your body heal. It's been through the ringer! -
Thanks!! Well I'm a 44 years old Hispanic female. Have three sons. Been married for 18 yrs. As a tradition Hispanic Puerto Rican we eat very unhealthy. Many letters were sent to my insurance for approval. Finally this September it was approved. My big day was 2/1/12 its been almost 1 1/2 months. I was 226 and currently @ 206. My first fill will be 3/13. very new to the lap band. It will be nice to be able to speak to someone on a one on one for support. Thanks

Introducing myself & My Story so far...
SpecialK replied to Tina254's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Chrystina - good for you for hanging in there. I also had a PCP doc who turned me away about 4+ years ago when I wanted her referral for WLS which happened to be gastric bypass was the only option I knew about at that time. She adamantly refused saying I was too young, didn't know what I was thinking, it would be too hard to live the rest of my life, she had seen too many complications, etc. Then three years later, my OB/GYN was the one who suggested WLS and I've been a person who had irregular periods, etc. and he felt the surgery would really help even though I was past the point of being able to consider having children any longer. So, I did my own research, found about lapband, went to the surgeon on my own, and then "sprung" it on my PCP doc in a lettter saying I needed her 5 years of medical records sent to the surgeon's office documenting all the attempts and things I had tried for years to lose weight. At that point, I didn't need the PCP referral, thank goodness. I went ahead with the surgery and I've been the happiest little lapband lady since then. My OB/GYN hasn't seen me this year but I'm sure he will be shocked when he does see me. My PCP is happy for me for losing 100+ lbs but I think she still has thoughts that if I had tried harder, after 1000 tries at WW!!!-- I could have lost it without WLS and I'm just as convinced now that this was the right thing for me. I am the first lapband patient my PCP has had any exposure to so I'm taking this opportunity to educate her on it, and hopefully some other poor woman will be told by her that lapband is an option to get a significant amount of weight off, particularly to cure diabetes, and to get pregnant if that is their dream. Good luck. -
first thing you need to do is see your doctor. he may want to do a endoscopy or barium swallow or take out some Fluid. do not ignore this. it is not normal to be getting stuck this often. you can cause some complications unless this is address by your md. but you are likely right in assuming that you are eating incorrectly. it is hard and the way we have to eat doesn't come naturally. right now I would give your band a break and go back to liquids for a few days. you may be swollen from all the stuck issues. call your doctor

Charles - if you do some browsing on this site, you'll find plenty of people that have had problems with their bands or found out it's not for them. This isn't a band cheerleading site by no means. Go look at the "struggling" lap-band area and read up if you want to see some people that haven't had a smooth ride. I myself had my port flip on me after surgery. I had to have it corrected before I could get a fill. It was an unforseen complication, but something that had to be delt with before I could move on. I've found the GP (general practitioners) really don't know that much about lap band also. Most doctors, that aren't in the bariatric field, aren't educated about the band. They also get paid for prescription medications - so I don't put 100% of my faith in staying on medications all of your life because your doctor says you are responding to them. Why not be healthy enough not to have to take them at all? My OBGYN, two family friends are included in that number. However, since I've gone back to them for checkups (both GP and OBGYN) and having lost 50 pounds since seeing them last - they are happy and are asking me questions about the band.

cesar_107 posted a topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
GA_googleFillSlot("LBT-TextAd05");Hi, I am going to be having surgery in about 1 1/2 weeks and trying to get some advice with other guys who have had it done. What was your experience after surgery in regards to the diet and exercise? I am in need of loosing 50 lbs to be at my goal weight . I am wondering if anyone has experience visible ports or complications. For the past 3 weeks I have been eating small meals and working out in order to get a head start. I have lost 15 lbs but not sure if I should go forward with the surgery or not just a bit worried. Any comments will help. Thanks. Cesar -
Dropping The Dairy In Desperation!
Webchickadee replied to CrazyCatLady's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'm really hoping that your last statement of regretting your surgery is something you can look back on in a year and say "yes, at the time that was true, but no more"! Once all these crazy complications and hurdles are passed (!), I'm hopeful this will be a good decision for the rest of your life. You just have to find a way to make it through each challenging day right now, so you can get to that happy place. -
Newbie from England, Uk, 10days post op, needing friends and support
Bornagainbabe replied to tandy1316's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Jane's right, it does get better. Only a couple of weeks ago I was wondering when I was going to feel normal again but now at 4 weeks out I have practically forgotten that I had an op! Mine was a bit more complicated as it was open surgery and all my abdominal muscles were stitched up as well. You will be running around in no time! -
After sending you a PM tonight, I read some other posts on this website in the forum VSG Complications and Support (or something like that). You might want to do a search of the name of your doctor on this site and read what some people were saying tonight. Since I had read your post earlier, I thought I should let you know. At least, I would like someone to do the same for me. It would minimally give me a reason to make a list of questions to ask about procedures used.
