I can't believe it! I have lost 69 lbs. My goal was 90 by now, but I think I've done pretty darn well and that I'll get at least to 85. It hasn't been an easy year. Some of you know what's been going on. My husband's been ill for more than a year, and he got so sick in August that my band literally froze up, and I've had problems ever since. I've had 3 unfills! I am proud of myself for being a "responsible bandster" and getting unfilled when I was way too tight instead of trying to ride it out. I am grateful for lining up good aftercare BEFORE being banded Mexico. I am happy I chose Dr. Ortiz & that he's been in constant touch w/my doctors here to resolve my stupid nutcracker problem. I'm happy that I've been a positive example for my daughter. I think I'm doing better with medication and looser fill. A looser fill makes me more aware of what I eat. And believe it or not, I'm happy that I've lost so much weight that I have to have my abdominal surgery (related to my mastectomy) revised to remove the majorly buldging stitches and that it will result in a tummy tuck. That's why I might have to stop at 85 lbs.; if I lose too much I will bulge again. What a problem to have! On that subject, I am happy that my plastic surgeon, who will perform that surgery, is so amazed by my weight loss. I've taught him (and my internist) that bypass is not the only successful WLS. Surprisingly enough, when I saw him the other day, I brought along a detailed image from of a banded stomach & the port location so he doesn't damage it when he "peels back" my previous surgery. The area is from just above the pubic area to just below my belly-button. He said, "Karen, I know where the port is, I've helped some other surgeons re-position them". That really blew me away and gave me peace of mind. I'm grateful for the past year and in light of people's recent problems pray that I will be able to keep my band. Besides marrying my husband and having my two wonderful children, it's the best thing I've ever done. I'm happy that I've made friends on this board, and I'm very grateful for your support and encouragement. Thank you.

I get my revision on Dec. 4. I can't WAIT to be done with this band!!!! I just had an "incident" yesterday and man o man will I be happy to be done with that. Most of the time I don't even know it's there and then BAM! Out of the blue I am completely stuck. I am sure I will have issues, too, because my pouch is really stretched. I hope your recovery goes very smoothly and I am so happy to hear you have no hunger. I am hungry all the time at this point.

I have done TONS of research and been on these forums for months and I have't heard anything at all about VSG causing a build-up of scar tissue. I've heard a LOT of lap-band patients having trouble with scar tissue from their bands when revising to VSG. I don't think you'll have to be a "gym rat" to maintain your weight loss, but regular exercise is a requirement for maintained weight loss no matter how you lose the weight. I lost 90 pounds "on my own" a few years ago and stopping regular exercise contributed greatly to my regain. As for stretching the sleeve, it will relax and expand some by about a year out, but it can never be back to anything remotely resembling your old, full-sized stomach.

For those who had temporary "buyers remorse"

Yes I would like a refund for my lapband now that it is no longer working, the money would be useful to help pay for my revision -
Lots of pain almost 1 month post-op HELP
MOMW replied to Samantha227's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I too had a revision from a band to a sleeve. The only time I had pain afer the initial period, was a few times on my left side when I was working out. You are doing the right thing by letting your surgeon know. I definately would go to ER and best if it the ER where you had surgery at. ER physicians are not always well versed in our needs, but at least there you have a better chance that they are and they would also have access to your bariatric team. Good luck and hope you feel better soon. -
After suffering from a slipped band with some erotion I had my band removed and a revision to RNY. I was kind of sorry to lose my band, but the hell it put me through after being my best friend for over 3 years was more then I could bear. Now as far as RNY, it's really not as "evil" as some people make it out to be. The best part is that I have NO more reflux, PB'ing is just a bad memory, and NO more fills and unfills in my life anymore I'm also happy to report that I'm a member of the century club again!!!

I started with a gastric sleeve surgery done in July 2019 weighing just shy of 350lbs. I had a lot of issues and tough recovery and it required a revision to a gastric bypass at the end of February 2020. I do not own a scale in my home as I would obsess over the number and with the whole Covid situation I was not going to in person dr appointments but today finally I was able to go and I weighed in at 187lbs!!!! That number seems crazy to me. I was over 200 at the age of 12 and I’m now 46. I want to laugh and cry at the same time. This last year was probably the hardest thing I’ve ever been through and I am not back to being 100% healthy yet but I am so excited to finally be under the 200lb mark.

WTH?! I need to stop reading!!!
TijuanaPlication replied to ybnormal's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Being scared is perfectly normal, but the re-assuring thing is that those that did experience leaks would still do it again (that I've read about/seen on youtube). DS does provide the best weight loss, but you really need to research to know what you're getting yourself into if you go that route. For a start you have to have a BMI of 40 or more or 35 with 2 co-morbities. With DS you don't experience dumping - you get that with RNY. With DS the bowel is re-sected to cause malabsorption for better weight loss. You malabsorb 80% of the fat you consume but also nutrients and you need to be serious about getting in your Vitamins and 100grams of Protein if you're a lady (not too sure of the amount for guys). You also need to get your blood quaterly initially to check if you need to up any vitamins or protein. OH has a DS board you that's a great place for info if you're interested. The good thing about VSG is that you can revise to DS if your weight loss isn't sufficient, but you may well not need it (that's mostly how VSG came about). DSers are meant to be prone to diarrhea, but there's a lot of talk on OH about DSers having constipation!! I did end up having to go into hospital a week after having my uvula removed (it's in your throat and nothing to do WLS) so I had that concern about WLS but I did just fine. I don't think I've read of anyone have that happen, so the advice of sip sip sip must be working. Keep reading and posting, as there's always more you can learn and I wish you every success in your Quest for WLS. -
Guys, should I worry that my girlfriends 'mud flaps' have grown since WLS surgery?
Nikasio replied to Nikasio's topic in The Guys’ Room
I was asking for a guys perspective. I've been with her through many diets, revision surgery and her constant 2 AM anxiety attacks. Gotten enough advice from her girlfriends. Thanks anyway. -
I had the candy cane deformity. I had surgery and they removed 4 inch limb. They dialated my opening 2 times due to vomiting and nausea. I now have to have a revision. Ive been on liquids for 6 weeks almost. Are you able to eat?

I could have had surgery in the US as many of the Drs in Tx are having to compete with prices in Mexico. I could have waited 3 months for my insurance to kick in as well, which wouldn't have been a big deal. All in all, I picked Dr Aceves over any other Dr I spoke with. It seems like whenever this topic comes up, everyone is an expert in some field or everyone is leery of those who post on certain doctors. I read several stories about hack jobs in Mexico and obviously several stories of successes. It comes down to the surgeon, not the country. I'll say this. I had a f* up of an orthopedic surgeon here in the US. He ignored all of my weeks of complaining of swelling and pain in my leg, told me to call him on monday when I was coughing up blood on friday. Never compared the size of the two legs. I ended up going to the hospital with a pulmonary embolism and nearly died. I also had to have a revision on my ankle a year later. I did my research, I even straight up asked them if they had any legal action that was ever taken against them. They lied but I only found out about it after nearly dying. No lawyer would take my case, they all said that Doctors stick together and rarely will testify against each other. The surgeon did wipe clean all my bills to him but I was still left with several thousand bills for the PE through the hospital. My surgery in Mexico far exceeded anything I have experienced in the US. The private hospital was cleaner and more well run. The entire staff was attentive and caring. Any questions I've had pre/post op have been answered quickly. If Dr A gets a bad review it hurts his rep and his pocket. He can't rely on people choosing him because their insurance covers him. He gets patients because of word of mouth, not a listing.

Port revision surgery is a breeze. Mine flipped a couple of months ago and I had to have revision surgery. I was in and out in under 30 minutes and got a fill during that time as well. I went home within an hour after the surgery, felt great and went back to work the next day. The recovery is minimal and there is very little pain involved. I didn't even take tylenol. As for why they flip, no one knows. It just happens sometimes, thats all.

To Drink or Not to Drink - A take on Dr. John Dixon's findings
JessS replied to JessS's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Everyone's body is different and your mileage may certainly vary. But personal experience is the herald of all sorts of pseudoscience. I think the data is worth considering, because my personal experience may be wildly misinterpreted, as is so often the case when I've been shown my body is working differently than I always thought it was. In any case, the people in these studies are having all sorts of success (with less complication revision surgeries) and still eating and drinking fine. And their scans show the food exiting the stomach no slower than the control group. -
Actually MOST TTs include muscle repair---- that's a main reason for them- muscle revision and tightening.

I am converting from the band to the sleeve. I am so nervous. I should have got the sleeve the first time around.

Time for a Revision??
reverie replied to TxChelsey's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I do wish you the best of luck in whatever route you take, but in the end, the weight-loss starts with you. RNY, DS, the sleeve, Lapband; no matter what WLS method you choose, you have to be willing to make the lifestyle change, and it seems that you aren't ready or just don't want to. WLS to me is just a tool. Yes those who get RNY/DS lose quickly, but in the end it comes down to you to make the healthy choices, both food and exercise wise. Maybe the band isn't for you, but with your mindset and eating habits, another WLS may not get you to where you want to be either. None of them are a perfect answer; they're all tools to use to help you during the lifestyle change. While the malabsorption may help you more than the band could, still eating improperly will cause you to gain the weight back. I'd consider therapy or just talking to someone about your eating habits. You can't eat unhealthy and expect to lose weight just because you revise to DS or RNY. It's not that easy. -
I had band to bypass revision on 3/28. I had my band removed on 12/17 due to complications. I had no problem getting approved, just had to stay above BMI requirements, which wasn't a problem around the holidays, lol. Good luck! Sent from my LG-H631 using the BariatricPal App

Why Oh Why Can't I Lose Weight!
Kasey Parker replied to Felicia's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am not even a year out and have only been able to lose 1-2lbs a month for the last 8 months. However in lost and regaid120lbs and the doctors believe the sleeve didn't do enough and are suggesting I go in for a revision to the full gastric once I hit my year mark, which I plan to do seeing as I have a minimum of 67lbs to lose.. -
I know four people who have the LapBand. Each lost huge amounts of weight, but hated going in for fills. Three had complications (port infections requiring replacement). One got married and had all the Fluid removed and did not go back for a year and regained 90 of the 100 pounds he lost. The other two also grew weary of fills and stopped after maintaining weight loss for three years and have both regained a significant amount of weight. The final person did well and has no significant weight gain, but has slippage and erosion and is need of removal. Three of the people are now going through the process of revisions to the sleeve. All were afraid of going so drastically but all said they wished they had gone for the sleeve. There is also a man in my support group who has had his band for 8 years, he lost 160lbs but it is now creeping up and he is also going for a revision. It was the my wife, four friends/neighbors and this forum who helped me make the decision to get sleeved. I too was set on the band because it was reversible and less intrusive. My wife wanted me to have a more get it and forget it type surgery that did not require multiple fills. I was sleeved and I am now 65lbs lighter and shrinking after being sleeved on 2/19. My wife and I will be celebrating our 25th anniversary next month, and she said this is the best gift I could ever give her. Good luck to you on your journey no matter what you decide. Hi, I chose the sleeve for the following reasons: didn't have to worry about doctor's visits for band adjustment don't have to worry about it slipping or eroding removed 85% of the stomach which reduces the grehlin (hunger) hormone by 75% don't have to worry about revision surgery (as I've read on this site that many have had) Good luck with your decision. Try searching the lapband on this site to get more info people's experience with it.

Complications associated with Gastric banding A Surgeon's guide
Terry Poperszky replied to JACKIEO85's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Ms. Maui, let's be fair. That stat was true of the older lap bands wasn't it? And while you are at it, can you tell me what the reversal rates are for Gastric Bypass and Gastric Sleeves? Oh, wait they can't be reversed can they? And as long as you are interested in stats, would you care to let us know what the mortality rates are between the different types of bariatric surgery? Any bets which surgery has fewer patients die within 30 days of the surgery? Now, I don't have an axe to grind, and even if what you said was actually true of the lap band that I had installed, I would still have gone ahead with the surgery. I like choice in my life, and with the lap band I have a choice. With GB and sleeve, there is not going back, no further choice. Now, with that said, if my band fails and they can't put another band in. I will probably revise to a sleeve, if that fails (they do), I will opt for something else. But you see as a band patient, i have that choice. My friends wife who had GB and makes her self sick 4-5 times a week with dumping, doesn't have a choice anymore. http://www.obesitylapbandsurgery.com/statmain.html -
hi juniper im also considering a revision. im going to south america in july so i will get an unfill then once i go back to have Fluid added back i plan to start my process. i have lost weight with my band and im happy for that but i certainly need to lose more and think a different surgery will help me get to goal. my band is not all the way full but i never wanted to fill it to the max, i always wanted some wiggle room. i wish you success in the next phase of your journey. daqui

I had the band done about 5 years ago and i lost about 50lbs and gained it all back. I had the revision done 6/15/10. I have only lost 40 lbs since, but the quality of my life is so much better. I choose not to have the full 80% of my stomach removed and I am suffering the consequences of that choice now. I can eat far more than most. My biggest problem is head hunger, because of it I tend to snack all day. I desperately want to reach my goal weight of 145lbs, but I don't know how to get there. Because I am not seeing much progress I have also slacked off with exercising. Can anyone offer advice or suggestions? I am open to anything.

You've made the decision ever to have a revision. I had a band for almost 4 yrs and went through the same things you did. If you look at my past posts, and especially those of Tiffykins, then'll you find plenty of information of what to expect now once you're sleeved. And there are many more on here in our situation - just search "revision" or look at more of the past posts in this thread and there is plenty of information already available. Best wishes on your surgery -
