    Erosion, The Real Facts

Well without having read all the posts in between, that just rammed home two things for me. One, there are many doctors making a buck with obesity surgery who have no freaking idea of the emotional journey we take when we undergo it. Choosing a surgeon for this is like choosing an obstetrician, its somebody who you hope to have a long respectful relationship with and I've been appalled at stories I've heard from people about how little understanding their doctors have shown. TYou bare your soul to them afterall. This was just another example. What, is weight loss surgery the next big money spinner, but you hate fat people? And two, how very glad I am that I live in Australia. For a measly $3,000 I have my band AND I have guaranteed aftercare FOR EVER and that INCLUDES revision surgery if necessary. I know our health systems operate very differently but this should be the case for everyone.

Welcome, Kimber! You'll find quite a few people who have had or are planning sleeve-to-RNY revision surgeries. Hopefully you'll click with some folks following your same path!

    Exercise if you can't move

There are lots of chair based exercises you can do. A quick Google search should turn up quite a few. Arm raises, calf raises, bicep curls, etc. Good for you for wanting to start out with good habits! Lap band 10/2007 revised to RNY 12/22/2017 HW 270 SW 263 CW 253

    Gastric bypass or sleeve?

I was like you no comorbities. I was a great sleeve candidate. I was a terribly slow loser which I learned to live with. I have since had some complications post pregnancy and will be revised to bypass soon. I have developed terrible GERD with my sleeve. Also, some sleeve drs still do not advise taking NSAIDS. I took them after my c-section and thought I was gonna have a heart attack. Since then my surgeon had told me to stop using them. I think this is an area that is still conflicting amongst the sleeve community. People have success with both and there can be complications with both.

My Apologies, Didn't see the date on the side there, just that you were listed as a lap band, and you didn't state you were going in for revision. Good luck on everything! I hit 50 lbs lost today since my pre-surgical check in on March 2nd!
  6. Thanks for sharing that info. I am set to revise from sleeve to bypass on Friday. I also wish that I had started with bypass. I swore that I would never revise. I do have gerd and hiatal hernia. Plus I only lost about half of excess weight with sleeve. Still the episodes of reflux have not been all that frequent. Here I am the day before surgery. Still wanting to back out.
  7. My revision is May 21st..... happy to have a buddy! Lisa

    Can't drink Protein, HELP!

Not sure if you have Kroger by you but they have this CARBMASTER MILK! Chocolate, Plain and Vanilla, 8 onz has 11 grams of Protein and 60 Calories. I know you need more but you could maybe mix protein powder with it. A Christmas I used it with Egg Beaters to make Eggnog. I told a friend of mine who's daughter has medical issues she was talking how her girl needed more protein but wouldn't drink ensure etc. I told her and she loves it. Tastes like regular chocolate milk. I mentioned it to my Dr he said it was find but as space is at a premium perhaps mix some additional unflavored protein powder with it. I currently have a band and am having a sleeve revision in May.
  9. I had my surgery almost exactly 3 years ago and didn't tell anyone other than 2 friends who live halfway around the world and are not connected to any of my other friends, family, or co-workers. I wasn't going to tell anyone, but then I thought someone should know in case something happens to me. When people asked about my weight loss I focused on the the low carb/portion control aspect of what I was doing (which, let's face it, is what leads to long-term success). I'm going for my revision surgery in a month's time and this time no one will know. The only people I would be willing to tell are some friends who are also morbidly obese - but only if they asked me specifically about it. In a few years time, when I am hopefully in maintenance mode, I think I would be more willing to talk about it openly, but while I'm still struggling, it's not something I can really talk about. I live in a country that has one of the lowest overweight/obesity rates in the world, so it's not like there are a lot of people out there who have a shared life experience that I can talk to about it.

    What can possibly go wrong?

I had Roux-en-y first. I then had a revision to sleeve due to complications from the rny. So my case is a bit more complicated than most. For instance, most sleevers don’t dump. I also had a lot of scar tissue and a stricture. I’m sure some of this contributes to my issues... although my best friend had a perfectly done RNY and has a lot of long term issues too. So it’s hard to say.
  11. I never had a band slip or erosion but had a combination of reflux and food intolerances that were very disruptive to life. One advice I would give is make sure whoever does your revision has done many procedures and find a population of revision patients (virtual or real life) for feedback and support. Lots of folks say that we revisions still lose well but not as much as virgin sleevers. When I compare weight lost to others sleeved around the same time though, I'm pretty close to average. Just short of 45 lbs. in 3 months. I don't have a soft stop like I did with the band. Mine was a sniffle. But I can tell what almost full feels like pretty easily now. The first few weeks of solid foods I had to measure because I couldn't feel it. Eating too much is uncomfortable but I wouldn't call it painful. Way too much I'm guessing would hurt but I haven't tried. I can eat nearly anything at this point. No more obsession with texture or days where not even tea or Water went down. I haven't tried milk, sugary or fatty foods yet except a bite/taste. There's no "catch point" like I had with the band. This means when you take too big a bite or first start taking pills again you might find out what too big means. For me it was sliming and foaming a bit. That part was the same as the band and is basically gone for me. I was afraid to drink for several weeks after surgery because of all of the band issues. For me it turned out to be all in my head and not reality at all. I don't really feel much hunger at all, not like the band where my stomach was growling and I couldn't do anything about it. But I do find it harder to stay on top of eating and fluids more than with the band. But I also had the band for six years so I just might not be remembering. Also I think the postop diet was easier to bear the second time around. I think because I knew it was temporary. Feel free to PM me if I missed a question.
  12. You are a revision from band to sleeve? Your weight loss is very impressive!! Good for you!
  13. You'll love the sleeve compared to the band bc I do! The band was so uncomfortable IMO. Plus no trips & co-pays for fills ???? I did what!!??

I know exactly where you're coming from. I was banded in Oct 2009 and originally lost 104 lbs (9 lbs from goal of 135) last year. Then my band had a minor slip and they took some fill out. I gained 18 lbs. Then, 2 months ago, I had a major slip and they took out ALL of my fill (awaiting revision to sleeve in late June) and I gained another 12 (8 of them on my 7 day Alaskan cruise last week). So I've gained a total of 30 lbs in about 18 mths. Wow. I also thought once I lost it, it would be easy to keep it off. I don't fit into many of my clothes anymore. I'm not trying to lose weight but I'm also trying not to gain weight before my revision surgery. I know that I'll lose what I have left after that. Good luck taking it off. It sucks to think you're a failure (you're not, btw) Marci

    Sleeve vs Bypass

I also went to the doctor anticipating the sleeve, but he suggested the bypass. He was really good about explaining the whys. He asked what my concerns were about the bypass, and I mentioned that I thought it was more invasive. He said that it's a more technically complicated surgery than the sleeve for the doctor, but on the patient side of it, the pre/post op are pretty much the same. When it wasn't done laparoscopically, I'm sure it was much more invasive, but now it's pretty much the same as the sleeve. I've decided to take his advice and go with the sleeve. Also, my insurance made it very clear this one a one time surgery, and I've seen so many people with revisions that I'm just going straight to bypass.
  16. losethemess, if it makes you feel any better, chances are your baby is getting plenty to eat. There are exceptions (which is why you should be monitored by an OB), but in general the baby will take whatever it needs from you. A bigger concern would be that you would be losing out on something you need. For most pregnant women, the baby's needs are met first and the mother's needs are met with what is left. That's usually not a problem because everyone is getting everything they need, but chances are if anyone is losing out, it's not the baby. With my first pregnancy, I was still down 17 pounds immediately before my baby was born. And he was a perfectly healthy 7 lbs 7 oz. My doctor watched me carefully, and my child was fine. Losing weight can be scary when you're pregnant, but it's not necessarily indicative of a huge problem. Just discuss your concerns with your doctors, and make sure you are doing what you need to do to keep both of you healthy. If that means getting an unfill, by all means, do it (especially if you're having a problem keeping liquids down). But at this point, I wouldn't worry too much about the weight loss--most weight isn't gained until the third trimester, anyway. And gaining weight won't necessarily affect the tightness of your band, either. (Mine didn't with either pregnancy.) When you can eat again, take care to eat the right things. The things you should be eating in pregnancy are largely the things you should be eating anyway, minus a few pregnancy-specific items. Try to eat well, and you should be fine. Don't use restriction or lack thereof as an excuse to abandon what you know are good eating habits. What you described actually sounds a lot like what I experienced with my first pregnancy. Perhaps brought on by morning sickness (or "all-the-time sickness," as I referred to it), I had a slip which made it exceedingly difficult to keep things down. And I guess my take away message with that was: 1) my baby was fine, and 2) I had to get a revision four days after giving birth. It was rough, but we all made it. Talk with your OB and band doctor about this possibility. They won't be able to check for a slippage while you're pregnant, but having this possible explanation in the back of your minds may help decide how to proceed as you progress in your pregnancy.

    OH Juli's Plastic Surgery

I am debating on whether or not to get an unfill too. Does a port revision mean that the Fluid will be drained from the band automatically? If that's the case, I'm not sure I want a low profile port, but I will still need the port moved as it is sitting next to my belly button and the hernia that is going to be repaired. As for the unfill, I don't wear my band tight either, but I have problems every single month that I have my period. The band gets super tight and I can't eat anything but liquids or I'll PB. I certainly don't want problems after the tummy tuck, but I like my restriction where it is now (except for TOM). Cathy

    OH Juli's Plastic Surgery

Juli and Lellow, I'll be keeping tabs on both of you as well as it sounds like we are all having similiar surgeries. I am scheduled for April 30th for tummy tuck with 360 degree cut, vertical incision, liposuction, hernia repair and port revision. I wanted to have the surgery at the end of March or 1st of April, but trying to schedule the plastic surgeon and general surgeon together was difficult. My surgery is supposed to be around 5 1/2-6 hours. I am going home the same day and following up with my plastic surgeon the following day. I am going to be optimistic and try to get back to work after having 3 weeks off, but we'll see how that goes. I am not at my goal weight either, but this timing is right for me. I don't know if I'll post pics or not either. I am extremely modest!! It kills me every time I have to stand naked in front of the plastic surgeon! Cathy

    My Lap Band Slipped

After a year and 100 pounds down, I started gaining weight again and found out my band slipped. My doctor opted to do the revision surgery and my insurance covered it do to the risks of not getting it done. Come to find out that when most surgeons do the band they take part of the stomach up over the band and suture it on both sides. My doctor only did one side so the other slipped up. My new doctor was able to get it back in position and get it tied down. He also put 4cc's in at that time. I am on the liquid diet again till i heal but I am so happy they where able to fix it for me without removing it. The lap band saved my life and sets backs or not, I owe my life to the band.

It's great that this forum exists now. I am a sleever, and I am eager to read the experiences of DS people, in the event of a revision years down the road. Good luck!

    June Date Finally! Anyone Else?

I've tried to find the group but can't! Secondly it took 2 days for my insurance to approve my revision surgery from lapband to gastric bypass sad new I have to pay for the lapband removal portion myself.... MC
  22. My port is detached and my surgeon sent in for an approval to have the port revision done. Tricare DENIED the surgery..... They state it is because the FDA has not proven that the surgery is needed to make the initial surgery work... Hmmmmm so I have the lapband placed.. BUT it cant be accessed.... how is it NOT needed....??? :confused2: I have filed an appeal.....The process could take 60 days...I am in a bad place right now... this is TERRIBLE... band placed May 21st....can not use it.... I feel like I am in a bad dream and need to wake up..... Anyone else have this experience.....and can offer advice or outcome?
  23. HI - I'm also a new band/sleeve revision hopeful. Nice to meet you! My surgeon is submitting my paperwork right now and in 2-3 weeks I should be able to schedule my revision date. I may be the oddity around here. I've never hated my band - I've lost 90 lbs and have kept it off for the past 4+ years. I guess I just learned to live with the food restrictions and PB episodes. Now that I'm unfilled eating so so much easier (to easy says the 3 lbs I've put on). I started having severe reflux 6 months ago and finally went in for an Upper GI - my pouch was dilated all the way around. My doc wanted it out but I didn't until I came home and researched......I fully believe that since I've had this issue I will have more in the future so that is why I have decided on a revision...that and no more PB, stuck first bite, watching people eat while I drool and try not to throw up. It will be nice to have a "normal" relationship with food. Good luck!
  24. yes, my insurance covered the revision at 100%. i didn't pay a single cent. all my doctor did was submit my clinicals with a recomendation that the band be removed and the sleeve done. approval only took 2 days.
  25. Hi All! I was scheduled for a Band to Sleeve Revision on March 1 and postponed the surgery because my eldest child pitched a fit. I was not prepared for her reaction and just cancelled knowing full well that I would reschedule. I am not scheduled for May 3 and have told her about it. I need some support from you guys and some suggested replies to her. My new mantra is that I am not asking for permission but, I AM asking for support! Any other words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated. Even my 81 year old mom is behind me in this! Thanks in advance! Happy Weekend! Barb
