    June 2019 Surgery Siblings!

I'm going to have to try the tea thing I guess, I am finding the same thing, which is weird since I already had a VSG and just had a revision but I am finding Mio (which I couldn't live without before) very sweet and it almost seems like it's hurting my stomach. I suppose it is possible that since I am bypasseed now that the Sucralose is having a negative effect. Oh well, I'll try some tea and see how that goes down.

Thank you for the great reply. I am still at a stall but I have become stronger with muscle and also I have found myself eating really healthy. I have lost inches and that is what keeps me going further everyday. I am sorry you need to have revision surgery and hope that is successful in the long run with you. I do miss food and often regret not eating a wonderful sandwich, or a piece of pizza, and hamburgers just don't even look good. Getting on the right track is important and pounds don't really matter since I have lost 60 lbs and hope I can get to my goal of 80 pounds. My dietician said I am doing amazing and my fitness pal app is helping me be successful with dietary intake and exercise. One thing that was never discussed while meeting with the staff was the importance of a food scale. It makes life so much easier to determine how much protein you have consumed as well as fiber. Fiber is difficult to get into your system when you are restricted on intake. Calcium chews are still a challenge but getting past it. Good luck to you.

This is the only post I found on here mentioning Daily Harvest. I've just ordered from them yesterday — highly recommended by a coworker, and I'm really excited to try so many foods I would not normally eat. I am being considered for revision surgery (VSG to RNY) to resolve my GERD. I'm "nutritionally crippled" according to my doctor and need to improve my iron (getting an infusion again soon) and several other macronutrients before I can be operated on. Stalls/plateaus happen all the time! With my sleeve, even though I did not have as much to lose, I remember being stuck at the same weight several times, and sometimes for up to 3 weeks, which I agree with you, can be frustrating and disheartening when you're doing all the right things! But you're probably losing inches, and that's where non-scale victories come in. Your body just needs time to adjust to the changes happening. Dealing with our psychological food issues/addictions, in my opinion, is a great indicator of success long term. It's something I did not take seriously before, to be honest. Even though my doctor used an incorrect technique that has caused my sleeve to look like an hourglass instead of a banana, I've definitely made mistakes that contributed to my weight regain. I have started Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), reading (currently: Bariatric Mindset Success), listing to podcasts (found on here), and joined a support group. I think mapping my thoughts and reading about combating food addiction will help me gain deeper introspection to modify my behavior. I hope you're in a much better place now with your goals. Good luck to you!
  4. yes. All that extra weight is horrible on your health - just as bad as smoking. I should have done it *years* ago. One piece of advice - if you have reflux, I'd suggest considering the bypass instead. The sleeve can often (not always - but often) make that worse. Some sleeve people end up revising to bypass because of it. Bypass can often (again, not always, but often) improve or even cure reflux.
  5. I just had my revision from vsg to bypass yesterday. I don't remember the pain after my sleeve being like this. I am so sore and it hurts to move. Did you experience worst pain than vsg?
  6. @Deedee12Thank you! I don't know quite who to talk to @ Aetna, I was thinking a case manager may be able to help me. I too would just barely meet criteria if just applying for a sleeve as I am just obese, have no co-morbidities. In the clinical policy bulltetin there are options A-D for repeat bariatric surgery and all of them require "compliance" with diet and exercise program which is hard to show because when I was successful I did not frequently see a doctor for my band. I started seeing a doctor when my reflux started and i started gaining weight. My doctor prefers to do the removal and revision in 2 different surgeries but if there is no complications will do it all in one. My fear is that if i Just get the lapband removed I will be denied for a sleeve. Even without the "compliance records" I feel like with the damaged lapband evidenced by xray and the reflux and weight gain I should be approved for a revision---I feel that with all the research and data out about lapband complications insurance suggesting another band or a band fix is ridiculous! The person at my doctors office just keeps saying this may be tricky, I want to know from someone at the insurance company what I need to submit exactly to be approved. I have a POS II policy. I don't know who to talk to there or where to start and would like to speak to someone before submission because I know a denial can be difficult to fight. I am also choosing to go out of network because the previous physician I had seen did not catch all the problems visible on Xray with my band. I appreciate all of your advice, thank you! If you have any other suggestions I would appreciate it! Thanks! Maura

    Alcohol

After my sleeve I waited a few months. For my revision, I stopped drinking at least a few weeks before surgery. I will wait a year after this revision. It's hard and needed. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G935A using BariatricPal mobile app

    New and Considering DS

I have been through a Rex program (I was even in their commercials back in 2010) for lapband but that surgeon is no longer here - and just had a revision through Nc bariatrics performed at wake med Cary to ds. Revision was 6/6- my lapband stopped helping me- I could either eat anything or nothing. So I started a year ago trying to get ducks in a row to do this- my insurance required 6 months of dr supervised weight loss visits (I lost nothing) and when I missed the November appt it set me back and then insurance initially denied it bc they said the psych visit didn’t say it exactly how they wanted so he rewrote his report resubmitted and approved. So anyways I was approved in March and I delayed surgery to 6/7 bc life - It’s surgery and that is kind of scary- but so is driving a car, anything can happen anywhere. You just have to have faith. In the hospital I managed pain with something via IV that worked great- coming home they sent me hydrocodone - I only took it at night to sleep comfortably and managed anything else with Tylenol and I stopped taking the hydrocodone after a week. I had more pain with this than my c sections but I also had my lapband removed a hernia repair and the ds. But it has been manageable. The preop liquid diet was hard, less hard post op but I’m sick of sweet and ready for purées! I am 41, no co-issues. With my lapband I went from 330 to 250 and maintained there for 7 years and then started having issues. I got back to 301.9 when I started this pre op diet. I’m down 20lb total in 3 weeks. It’s not the easy way out but it’s a step many of us need to get control over food. I was open with what I was doing - if anyone had anything negative to say they never said it to me

Just wondering if anyone from NC

I had a hernia repaired when they did my lapband to ds revision - I didn’t even know I had one! Hope it doesn’t happen again later
  10. @Deedee12, the clinical policy for this states for revision approval you need to show compliance with diet and exercise...how did you do that? When I was successful with the band I didn't go to the Dr. very often, and prior to going to see the Dr. who will be doing my revision I hadn't seen someone for my band in almost 1.5 years so I'm nervous I'll get denied despite having tubing that is disconnected, a mispositioned port, and a slipped band. Thanks!

    Gastric sleeve to gastric bypass

I had the revision surgery from sleeve to bypass a little over a month ago. I stayed one night in the hospital, no real complications to report. Have you gotten a surgery date yet?
  12. It's such a relief finding people who can relate to what I am going through! I was sleeved August 2012. I'm currently being considered for RNY revision due to GERD and several other reasons. I'm also anxious but excited. Very happy for those of you who are now GERD-free!

    More than 10 tears

I thought that might be the case. Try going back to focusing on protein and cut out sliders. Go and see your surgeon and discuss with him/her how to proceed. You may need a fill or infill. I had the same issues and was told by my surgeon that he didn’t think I would be able to get my band to “ work” again. Apparently they have discovered that they have a limited lifespan and after a while they cause serious issues like oesophageal failure. I was suffering bad reflux with a limited amount of fill but was still hungry and putting on weight. I revised to RNY in Jan and am very happy. I have lost all my excess weight and my diet is now far healthier than with the band.

    More than 10 tears

What surgery did you have? Some surgeries from a while ago seem to have lived their lifespan and are very hard to get going again, in these instances a revision may be required.

    Puzzled

How does a person know when they have to go back to surgeon for revision?
  16. I'm 2.5 years out and I can tell you that although I had some restriction after surgery (mostly, I think due to the swelling of the wound and the time it takes to heal), by 6 months out I could eat what others could only do at 2+ years out (full chicken breast, some veggies, etc.). I never felt a restriction the same way that others have mentioned - I could move ahead much faster in trying new foods post-op than what was recommended (I didn't, but could have). Now I'm looking at getting a revision to bypass because clearly the restriction of the sleeve did not work for me. I know it's not just the sleeve, part of it was the mental side of things. For me, I've come to realise that there is no going back to normal eating patterns. The new food/portion control is for LIFE. Fail at that, the sleeve can fail (at least, it did in my case). I remember the day after my surgery crying to one of my doctors that I didn't believe that they did the surgery (despite the scars and tubes and everything else) because I wasn't in any real pain, had no nausea, and was full of energy, the complete opposite to every other patient in the hospital when I was there. She told me I was one of the lucky ones that come out of surgery feeling good and that I should be thankful for it. She then showed me a picture of my stomach that was cut out (to prove it) and said that it was longer than usual. I sometimes wonder if, because of that, I didn't have the same restriction as others. Anyway, long story short, everyone has a different reaction post-op to surgery. You may be someone who feels restriction years out so it will help you keep portions small. You may be someone who feels less restriction as time goes on, which means you have to have the mental strength and determination to stick to what is right, and not be distracted or influenced by others in what you eat. Either way, the best way to keep your sleeve small and unstretched to be vigilant in portion control and drinking protocols. Maybe forever.

    queasy

I'm 5 weeks post op from my revision to bypass. I basically feel queasy after every meal. I guess my question is, will this ever stop or is this just the new reality of life? thanks

    hernia development

I had the same thing. I was constantly throwing up due to the hernia. My surgeon just corrected the hernia and made the diaphragm hole smaller without a bypass revision. . My problem now is that I’m struggling with that stuck feeling and feeling a bit nauseous. My surgery was just 2 weeks ago, so still figuring it all out

    Starting my process for vsg

My insurance does cover revisions. I had surgery for severe endometriosis and it wasn’t all removed. I also had complications during that surgery and he doesn’t know if I have scar tissue and he wants my belly fat to shrink some first. So basically he said he will have to look inside first and that the sleeve would be the safest option right now.

    Starting my process for vsg

I haven't been to a nutrition class but I did do one on ones with a dietician, just discussed current diet, what diet I will need pre op / post op...etc. Any reason the surgeon isn't doing a bypass to start with? Will your insurance cover the original surgery plus a revision?

    Psych Eval

So, today was the day for my psych eval. Not sure to know what to think about it. I went in and the psychologist was very nice. Gave me a piece of paper and asked that I write my name and dob on it and Dr. to do my surgery. He then had me answer a list of questions he had wrote down such as: where did I here about the bypass surgery, why did I want bypass surgery, have I attended a seminar yet, have I seen the dietitian and if so how many times, what family support do I have, what are the complications of bypass surgery, and what type of diet/exercise changes do I plan to make. Last but not least, what will be the hardest change I will have to make after having the bypass surgery. Then he proceeded to have me fill out the standardized psychology test MMPI (Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory Test) 300+ true/false questions I had to answer. Once I finished he told me thank you so much, I will send the results to Dr. by beginning of the week and took my fee. Kinda perplexed feeling perplexed right now! I have another dietitian appoint the 27th and not sure what will happen next. I also called my insurance company to see if the office has submitted a request for approval and they had not so far. I sure would like to get confirmation on something! Waiting is hard! Unknown if you are covered is even harder. Not knowing if you will be able to even get the revision surgery is the hardest!😟

    RNY or Sleeve

if you have acid reflux, I would not even consider the sleeve. I've seen a lot of people on internet forums revising from sleeve to RNY because the sleeve made their reflux worse. I had RNY for that very reason. It doesn't ALWAYS make it worse, but I wasn't willing to take that risk.

    2008 bandsters

Aug 12, 2008 banded. Lost 95 lbs initially but over the last few years and I gained back 17. Now at 222 as of today. Went to see a new surgeon as the original one no longer takes my insurance and is over an hour and a half away now. Had to get a complete unfill because of really bad GERD and vomiting and most things getting stuck. Went in to see about revision to rny but would have to go through 6 months of supervised diet and all the other hoops for my insurance to cover the revision. Well, so far so good, drank a protein shake and will have some soup soon. No problems yet. I'm hoping that I just needed the unfill and let my stomach calm down and find the sweet spot again. Maybe I can get back on track with the band, slowly. Keep your toes crossed for me. I Really do not want to have another surgery if I can help it......I would love to keep in touch with you 2008 Bandsters!!! [emoji171] Sent from my XT1565 using BariatricPal mobile app
  24. I loved my MGB, I had no issues for 11 months and lost 95% of my excess weight. I started having left sided abdo pain, had blood work and ultrasounds that were fine. I began having severe pain with nausea and vomiting 10 times a day for 3 weeks and ended up in hospital. Despite scope and CT I didn't get a diagnosis until 4 months and 4 re admissions to the hospital later. The area I live has very few bariatric surgery resources. I am now thankfully getting a revision to Roux n Y which should eliminate the problem, I was trialed on medication to help with the bile reflux and it ultimately failed. My surgery is in 10 days I am so relieved. I am still glad I did surgery despite my complications. You just never expect to be the low percentage of people with this complication. Has anyone else experienced anything like this?

    2008 bandsters

I was banded in October 2008. It was awesome for the first two years, then still good for a number of years after that. I went from 433 to 178 pounds. But the last few years have been quite difficult and depressing. GERD, vomiting, foam in my mouth, food getting stuck, and poor eating habits developed by thinking "what is my body able to tolerate now?" rather than "what is healthy to eat?". Gained nearly 100 pounds back of the 250 I lost. I'm done with this band. Ready to have it removed and revise to RNY as quickly as my doctor will let me, looks like 3 months. Doctor appointment to kick off the process is tomorrow. I think I may have to go through the usual pre-surgery hoops.
