    The Deciding Moment

Amen Sisters and Brothers! Mine came when I saw members of my family younger than me well on their way to obesityland. Time to swing into action and take control of this lifelong BS (Beef Situation). My daughter has done the lapband too and is as delighted and excited as I am. Going through this together really makes us determined. Let the good times roll!
  2. If me continuing to overeat and stay at unhealthy weight could have helped one single starving child, I would agree that it would be a horrible choice for me to get healthy. But the fact that starving children exist in this world just doesn't have anything to do with the fact that I needed to make a radical commitment to MY health. The two facts couldn't be any less related. My husband and I send money to Haiti every month, because my husband was born and raised there so we understand the desperate need. We know that hungry people are fed regularly because of our support. We supported individuals there before my surgery, and we continue to support them. But my very slender husband who grew up in abject poverty with one or maybe two meals per day, has also been 100% supportive of me in my journey. The thoughts that you are struggling with have never crossed his mind. Don't let them plague yours.
  3. I had my surgery with Dr. Murr in Tampa st because he is one of the best surgeons doing barbaric surgery over 1,500 procedures along with many revisions of botched surgeries. Secondly he is one of the only preferred providers in the area for my insurance BC/BS. I went to Dr. Grossbards class before you start your surgery process I we didn't "click" . I waited over a year to find a surgeon that I did like. The one I found was really good. if you are not comfortable with your surgeon look around there are many good surgeons available to you. Hope this helps Jim
  4. Who is in your house? The reason i ask is bc if the bad food never comes in then you cant eat it. Dh and i made a deal. He goes to the store and buys his own junk and then it goes into a solid colored large container in the pantry. I cant see it and i dont open it. I havent even seen him eating it so i think hes doing it when im not around. At night i have sf jello and then i go brush my teeth. And i also felt the need to have all of my fav foods. I decided about 2 wks ago to get into band mode as i am getting banded next month.
  5. You can be as rough as you want. You won't even know u have it except for when you eat. My dr said that after the band has been there a while, there is tissue that grows over it, but not in bt the stomach and the band. Meaning that your body forms a protective layer over the top which can actually help it stay in place. The only reason I asked this question was bc I was worried about my body "rejecting" the band or trying to attack it bc it was invasive.

    Help!

Mood swings can be normal post-op. I'd venture to guess you've got some crazy hormones going on due to the lack of bc and possibly hormones that occur post-op. I hope it passes quickly for you! ~Kat

    Help!

Hi SarahBeth - I'm still pre-procedure but I do have a lot of experience with BC as well as fertility drugs. Sounds to me like you've got a double-whammy: your body is adjusting to a major surgery as well as re-aligning your hormones to compensate for no BC. I think you should cut yourself some slack and realize what a big accomplishment you've achieved. Don't worry about the dogs - they have unconditional love for you Why not try a hot bath and a good book or some really bad reality TV? I recently bought my kids a bracelet-making craft kit and I am surprised at how much it relaxes me to do. What do you like? I have a ton of authors I can recommend or some really fun Apps. I know you're still recovering or I would suggest you take a walk. Feel better - you're doing great!!!

Girl, you know I love you. But I have 3 sets of company this weekend. My sis and her friend come in tonight (staying with me.) Trish from LBT is at the Paris waiting for my call, and our friends from Lodi, CA that drive a race car are here for NHRA. That means you should freeze a LARGE batch and Fed-ex for Saturday delivery. I'll PM you my Fed-ex account number. Thank you so much, you are so kind and generous. xoxo much love
  9. Hello!!! Next month marks my 2 year post op mark. I have done amazining well with the sleeve until this past 6months have caught up on me slowly! I actually hit my goal weight within 10mo post op and have maintained it well being able to enjoys foods I like and just staying in portions not over eating. Well for the past 6months I have found myself eating too much junk bc I think I got 'too comfortable! " I have slowing gained 12lbs! I am not terrified and feel disgusted. All my weight goes to my belly so its even worse. I have began today to start a 5 day re-set. But any advice from others that I have thru this or struggled is appreciated. I need to get these 12lbs off and stay on track.
  10. Hi All, I haven't been on this app in years. I was sleeved (after having my lap band removed) in 2013. It's been a while. I've had to reconnect bc of weight gain, oh yeah it's real. I'm 5' 9" HW: 259...left: 170 cw:201....when I saw that number over 200 I almost passed out. I just came back from my nutritionist and that was hard bc I've had to relive my worst fear. I will not go back. I've signed up for several 5ks, 10k's and half marathon over the next year. I'm currently walking on an incline on the treadmill bc that burns the calories the fastest. I've paid for weight training and hot yoga, which I will implement over the next few weeks. I will not go back. I've come way too far. But I need support. So if anyone has advice, pls share. My motivation is here bc of fear but I'd like it to stay bc I'm comfortable with how I'm challenging myself. Please join me MyFitnessPal: treciagesq99 Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  11. You know, I started it, got side tracked, went back to it a couple times, but never finished it :huggie: I thought it was worth a try, and I wish I had...I know I'll regret it forever. Kinda screwed me up that I moved out of province a few months later, so I'd be in for even more of a hard time, trying to hassle them from here. All I really said was my story, about trying to better my life, trying to keep/get myself healthy to live out my life (in beautiful SK... haha, had to get that in to try to make them think they need to keep the youngins in SK), that it was unfair to make people wait 5-7 years, and only offer one option (bypass), and not even have a surgeon in the province (anymore), so in turn, relying on the few bypass surgeons in the west to handle the entire flow of overweight people in BC, AB, SK, ans MB. Luckily AB is covering it now (to an extent) and that takes some of the weight off (haha, pun!), but the Lapband in AB is just going to turn into how the RNY/bypass is... a several year wait! Ok... that turned into a rant. I think you should just state your case, tell how certain provinces cover it, why you're doing it, how you'll be less of a drain on healthcare with ____ lbs less that you'd be if you continued to inevitably gain, an get more and more unhealthy. Sorry I can't be more help. :phanvan

How nice your reply is Bandista. I appreciate it. Perhaps you are right. I will "act as if" you are right. I was not ready before. I thought it was a magic pill. I had a friend who went to Mexico and got her band 2 years before me. She dropped weight fast and hardly ever ate. I made up my mind to pursue it once our ins. started covering it. I thought my path would be the same. In fact, ppl were amazed I was going to have it done....b/c I thought, and they thought thru my explanations, that I was essentially giving up eating more than like a 1/4 cup of food 3 times a day. I somehow really believed that was my future when I went in the day of surgery, had wrapped my head around it and embraced it. I was gonna be skinny for once in my life! Well, that has not been my story. I never expected to get hungry. I also didn't realize I was such an emotional eater before. So, do believe in the changes I need to make now, and am willing to start those ODAT. I guess I should look at my band as a tool. I honestly never wanted to tell anyone before I have one. I'm very guarded still at who knows. BC I feel like a lapband failure. I have all along. I have resisted it and denied it, and thought it just didn't work for me. Maybe it will work for me now. I am thankful to have found support here. I think that also, is a big part of it. I don't know anyone else near me or even personally, who has a lapband. So, support has been lacking. I think it works just fine. I do not think I need a fill. I had tohave some taken out a few years ago, bc I could not swallow meat, and other solids. I think if I will use it and eat like I am supposed to, it might just work. Thanks for the support!

@@Rovobay Sorry to hear that! I'm very surprised a federal insurance plan doesn't cover it. I have BC BS of Massachusetts through my husband's company (a private engineering firm).

    starting to get depressed

Hi! I had my surgery oct 15 and I feel the same way. I just had an appt with my dietician and she assured me that ANY liquid I'm in taking is considered part of my "water". I was stressing bc I couldn't get all the protien shakes and all the water down in the same day. One day I did notice I became very dehydrated and felt very light headed and had to try to down my water as quick as I could.
  15. This is where you're absolutely, positively wrong. In the short-term, gastric bypass patients do lose weight, pretty much no matter what they do. But after the honeymoon period, this can--and often does--reverse. The body gets VERY efficient, with its new machinery, and if not fed appropriately, weight gain is not only possible, but more common than not. Look, whatever surgery you have, you're going to have to change your lifestyle dramatically or you WILL have difficulty reaching and/or maintaining goal. If you want a magic bullet, you're not going to find it. Anywhere.

    Disney anyone?

i love disney world! i've been 4 times and can't wait to get back. right now we're planning on going down next november or december. i should be banded by then and am hoping to be able to jog around the EPCOT jogging trail (think that's what it's called) that goes around the EPCOT resorts. quite ambitious of me, i know. what's everyone's favorite wdw memory? mine would have to be when i was 4 and my brother was 11 months. we were waiting to go into a character breakfast and he started crying. suddenly eeyore appeared and tried to cheer him up by dancing around and stuff. when that didn't work he took a bottle out of the diaper bag and fed my brother. eeyore kneeled on the ground holding the bottle for him and rubbing his head. tigger came over too and the two of them played with my brother, tickling him and hopping around while he had his bottle. we've got it on video and it's one of the nicest, cutest things i've ever seen.

    PALEO w/Lapband?

I will eat most any meat, poultry or fish. I try to get grass-fed beef and the best quality poultry and fish. Sadly, the most difficult part of paleo is finding quality Protein. I also eat fresh and frozen veggies. I try to eat protein the size of typical hamburger patty. I have started using a dessert plate as my dinner plate because I can eat a huge salad! It is a very simplistic way of eating, but my family is pretty happy and I feel great. Sent from my iPad using LapBandTalk

    Crushed by today's weigh-in

@@White Sale It's SO HARD when you know you're on plan, following your surgeon's advice to the letter and still NOTHING on the scale to speak of. But, as others have said, it WILL come off. WLS failures aren't people like you, who do what they're supposed to and just lose more slowly than others...I know that you know this! I'm in a dead stall at about 6 mos out and I'm irritated by it and fed up with it...I know it's going to end and the scale will start moving again, but I'm just peeved. We can be mad together, break our stalls and Celebrate it together Hang in there!

    Day 7

For some reason today is a downer for me. Maybe it is the weather. My surgery was last Wednesday. I started at 294 and as of today I am 272. I didn't feel like eating until day 4 and even then I ate very little. I miss food but I am thankful that I've had no complications. I belong to MOMS Club and they have fed my family every other night since my surgery which has been a relief. My first attempt at puréed foods left my bloated and a nasty taste in my mouth so now I don't want to try again. A positive note the night pain in my feet is gone, my blood sugar is down and the weight is coming off. Sent from my SM-N900V using the BariatricPal App

    Hospital Stay Day Of Surgrey?

It's different for different people. My insurance, Anthem BC/BS, required me to stay overnight for observation. Had the surgery around 11:00 that day. No beds available after my surgery so it was around 5:00 p.m. before I got in an actual room from the recovery room. That next morning, did some walking, had barium swallow, doc saw me around 9:00 a.m.and said I could go. Of course it was not that easy. The doc forgot to sign in all the right places and since it was a Saturday, they spent a half day trying to track her down because would not release me without all paperwork signed. Finally got to leave around 3:00 p.m. Looking back on it now, no regrets.
  21. For me, it took about 6 months from my first consult. There were several procedures to have completed (Upper GI, chest xray, bloodwork, EKG) and then visits with dietician, psych and exercise. I have BC/BS and they approved with 1st letter. It depends on your physician. I have a friend that had bypass and all of hers was completed in 6-8 weeks. Best of luck!
  22. hi, =) has anyone had their gastric sleeve with dr. ponce de leon in tijuana bc?? pleas share some informations =) thanx im having my surgery on the 16th of march soooo nervouse =)

    Time Of The Month....

My periods have ALWAYS been so painful that finally after many years the doc recommended bc. Wish I knew sooner but after reading these posts I am kinda freaked out to have my period even with the bc pills! I never really skipped the placebo pills but sounds like its the best time to start! I used to miss work and school because of the pain, I dont want it being bad again because of the band.
  24. I have BC/BS TX and the physician fee is 80/20 so I will pay 574.00 up front to the surgeon. The hospital will be 90/10 with me having to pay 10% of hospital fee which is billed after surgery. I have met my 2500.00 deductible already. The sleep study and EGD took care of that and I am on a payment plan with that. Sleep study was not required but my PCP wanted it done based on symptoms I was having and yep I have really bad sleep apnea durin REM sleep.
  25. Hi there, I think this is a brilliant site. I live in England, and there is not so many sites as extensive as this available. I had by band on 15th August privately and paid £5,000. It is something I had wanted for about 5 years! but my family were very cautious and felt it needed to be the very last resort. So even though I had tried just about everything for over 30 years, I went through another 5 yrs to prove that for me I can lose weight but then end up putting it all back on again!!! There comes a time when you either accept that or feel you are absolutely fed up and want to do something that will stop that disappointment once and for all. For me I had done a lot of soul searching and had accepted myself as a bigger person. My self esteem and confidence was not affected by my weight, because I have always cared about my appearance, I have my hair done regularly, visit a beautician and have nails done regularly and eyebrows waxed etc. However, more and more I noticed my weight impacted on my sense of wellbeing and fitness. My husband is a very fit man who takes part in triathlons, whilst I struggle to walk up hill. I used to be a fit person who was classed as 'sporty'. I used to play badminton, tennis, rounders and loved sport. This has become a thing of the past as it is such a huge effort when you carry excess weight. I have two grown up daughters, one is a community nurse and the other currently a trainee nurse. We have spoken extensively about how diseases such as diabetes impact incredibly on people. Unfortunately I have seen my older sister who is also morbidly obese been affected by this. She has developed diabetes and angina and problems with her knees and her mobility which has greatly impacted on her life. I began to realise that if i didn't do something about my weight that this would be my future. So here it is, I have had my surgery over 3 weeks ago and I am already lighter that I have been in many many years. I know there will probably be ups and downs, but I also know that I will be supported by my wonderful family, work colleagues, friends and by this site, as I have found it so incredibly supportive already. It is wonderful to have peer support from people who know what you are going through. Here's to the future, and thank you everyone already for everything you have shared. x
