    Gastric sleeve and lupus

I had bypass on 11/21/19, and I was diagnosed with SLE, Sjogrens, and PMR in 2017. Thanks God it’s well controlled with Plaquenil. The only issue I’m experiencing is the fatigue, and I’m noticing hair loss starting. That scares me the most, but I’ve added Biotin to my vitamin regimen. The pain and discomfort I’m still experiencing I’m not contributing that to my Lupus at this time. I had hernia repair too and that’s the area the bulk of my pain is, and lower abdominal region. I wish you the best of luck. Just know there’s no more oral prednisone if you have to use that for flare ups it has to be IV, or injection only from what my doctor told me. It cannot be long term.
  2. I'm right behind you at 22 days. I did so much research on the bypass and the band; close to a year before I actually pulled the trigger. I read many online forums; heard all the ups & downs, complications, read studies ad nauseam, etc. Though my doctor favors the bypass, I didn't want to rewire my plumbing. I knew that I had to do something, but didn't want anything so.....permanent. These online forums can be very helpful, but there is also a downside. I was forewarned to be careful what I read online. I try & take what I need & leave the rest, and know for a fact the the percentage of people without major issues, is far greater than those with the types of problems we've been reading, lately. As terrible as some of the issues are for those who are experiencing them, it doesn't mean "the sky is falling". I hope you feel better soon, too. It's a lot to take on, and we can only hope that we get to where we wanted to be when we set out on this journey.
  3. April will mark my 2 year anniversary of my sleeve. I still haven't told anyone at work, only my immediate family knows and 2 extremely trusted friends. The comments as regarding speculation have almost gone as no one seems to even remember the "fat" me anymore. I'm now the size they see and know. Anyone one else done this, in regards to not telling or talking about it. I found it interesting a few weeks ago, I was playing poker and sat next to a gentleman that had done the gastric bypass. We had a very interesting conversation about the differences between his surgery and a sleeve. I could tell he was curious as to how I knew so much about it and I was able to play it off by saying a girl I used to date had done it. That was enough to stop any further pushing into how I might know so much. He was very open about it, almost to the point of bragging. I'm not ashamed, but its not something I care to discuss with others. As the decision was an extremely personal one that came about for a variety of reasons.
  4. I went for my first consult today for the sleeve. It went great. I wanted to know if most people need the second surgery (bypass) to achieve their goal weight. Can you achieve your goal weight with just the sleeve surgery?

Why did you choose a midband?

change that midband erosion statistic to 2... mine's 70-80% eroded, and coming out november 11.

    Extreme nausea

Please help! I have been having extreme nausea, especially in the mornings to the point I cannot drink my coffee...this is a big problem considering my coffee "wakes up" my band. Without it and even alot of times with it, I have trouble getting things to go down. I had a complete unfill in November due to PBing, sliming, feeling of being stuck even though I only had 2 cc's in a 14 cc band...I did not have a slipped band according to the Barium Swallow. I was banded in May 2008...first year was great 70lbs without any problems. Anyone else with this problem? I REALLY need to hear from some of you with alot of band experience..thanks!

    Hi!

I have no real medical backing for that possibility, it's just based on things I have read & been told by others who have been through similar procedures -- anecdotes, really. In short -- I have no comorbidities, at least not that I or my current doc are aware of. For all intents & purposes I'm very healthy, but morbidly obese -- if that's not too much of an oxymoron! And I live an active lifestyle - no mobility issues: I play sports, I take martial arts, I scuba dive, I walk -- and I eat too much of the wrong things, and I have a damned hard time losing weight no matter how hard I work at it. A friend once asked her bypass surgeon about me, in passing, and he told her that I sound like "the perfect cadidate in terms of health and outlook for a strong & quick recovery, but possibly the least likely to be approved." I guess I'll just have to wait and see, depending on what I end up doing. Anyway - I read so much that says you need comorbidities for approval, but except for having tonsils & adenoids out at age 2, I've never had surgery... aside from ear infections & the regular bumps & breaks I've never been on prescription meds... but what they don't get is *I want to keep it that way*!!!! The only health-related thing I know of is that from my skinny days, when I was a sports nut, I have a torn ligament and cartiledge in my knee that has never been fixed (Dr's choice). Added weight is a HUGE stressor on that already damaged tissue, and my doc has confirmed that losing weight would help - but it's a joint, not my life (yet), and I don't know how much that would matter to my life insurance co. (I have United Health Care PPO). Now if weight alone is a qualifier, I may be in good standing! It was nice to "meet" all of you, and if you have any advice or similarities to my situation, please share! Like I said - it took 4 years to get to the point where I would even consider this, and it won't really be GOOD news if I can't even qualify!
  9. Life has been crazy, and I haven't been updating! There have been floods in the apartment, the car died, mike's mom went to the mental hospital, and when she got out she told them that we stole her car, when, in reality, she let us borrow it for a week when ours broke. Then a lot of expensive things were stolen out of the afore-mentioned car, creating a very hectic life for us all around. Also, just two days ago, Mike heard his best childhood friend had passed. Things have been very difficult for us these past two months. But still I trudge on down the bandster trail. I've had numerous appointments and classes. I've re-grouped with Pam, the nurse practitioner, who told me I had the go-ahead to meet with the surgeon. When I met him, he tried to talk me into getting bypass instead of the band, to the point where I finally told him if he didn't want to band me, that's fine, I would go somewhere else. He changed his tune super freaking fast. He told me I am the perfect candidate for banding. Turns out, that hospital gets more for bypass than banding. go figure. He told me yesterday that I can expect to have m surgery within the next 3-4 weeks, and that as soon as I see a hematologist and lose 10 pounds, I am good to go!!!! I also have one more support group meeting this upcoming week, and another surgery skills class. I am still awaiting insurance approval, which was jsut submitted last week. This is getting super real, and I'm not sure how to deal with it! I want to write more, but I have to go and finish getting everything out of the rooms to be re-carpeted today!
  10. Toward the end of each RNYTalk.com newsletter, we’ll be suggesting a Bypass Challenge for you to try before the next newsletter comes out. It’s a non-competitive challenge, and it’s a chance to do something new and healthy while putting yourself to the test. The Bypass challenge is just what it sounds like. We suggest a challenge for you to do over the next couple of weeks. Pretty much anything is fair play as long as it helps you or someone else get healthier. We may ask you to try a new food, change up your exercise routine or lend someone a helping hand. There’s no pass-fail on this, and we encourage you to try again and again until you are confident that you’ve met the challenge. Current Challenge: New Recipe! Within the next two weeks, your challenge is to try a new recipe that you have never tried before. It needs to be healthy, of course, and fit into your meal plan. A good way to start is to look at our Recipe forum or you can search online for recipes, try a new ingredient or use a different combination of spices. Good luck, and tell us how it goes by posting a reply to this topic! The forum is a good place to help out anyone else who needs ideas for a new recipe.

    Lapbanding vrs Gastric Bypass

Please - please - consider lap-banding over the gastric bypass. You are the perfect candidate at your height and weight. If you hang around the boards here and look at the people's posts and their weight losses and starting points - you would see that you have a great chance with the band. You would be better off with the band than any other treatment. From all of my research - I knew that was best for me. Take care - nancy

    Lapbanding vrs Gastric Bypass

Some surgeons who focus on bypass aren't necessarily giving their lapband patients the best aftercare and support. Sometimes to the point where they expect them to sit in the support groups that are made up of mostly gastric bypass patients, the nutritionists have the wrong info on what kind of diet the bandster should be eating, the surgeon tries to control the fill amount & schedule too much instead of allowing the bandster to take ownership of their band, etc. If you decide to go with the lapband I really hope you look for a surgeon that is pro-lapband and offers excellent aftercare rather than staying with this one. If you're in the Puget Sound area I highly recommend NWWLS (nwwls.com). It might be a few extra minutes of driving to get to their surgery center in south Everett but they have great care and do only lapbands. Almost all of the staff is banded, so they can relate to what you are going through.

    Lapbanding vrs Gastric Bypass

It appears that for most of us here at LapbandTalk. Gastric bypass was too radical and irreversible. No Malnutrition with excellent weight loss results. Since I have been doing my research, I have ran across a number of posts from people who had some form of bypass and followed up with a lapband. It ain't magic. It's a tool. You can succeed or fail on either course but for me, the thought of permanently altering my ability to absorb nutrients via gastric bypass, the longer recovery time, the higher death rate, and the fact you can stretch your remodeled stomach out again turned me against the bypass. Actually, I never considered the bypass since I have only the same 80 or so pounds to lose for the umpteenth time and the bypass scared the crap out of me. The lapband seems like a walk in the park. I am a newbie but have read just about everything I could get my hands on re:Lapband and to me it represented hope withot the giant risk of bypass. I am only sorry I didn't hear about it earlier in my life. I like to move forward fast and was just banded on 10/22/05. Was off work only 1 day and feel terrific. Little itchy on the port site but everything else is healed. dd

    Lapbanding vrs Gastric Bypass

Hi Flexible, Welcome to LBT! You've come to a place where just about everyone decided in favor of banding over bypass, so keep that in mind. Your surgeon is looking at the two procedures from HIS point of view, with his results-oriented view of many patients having both procedures. Statistically what he says may very well be true. But when I went into this, the statistics people threw at me went right over my head. I just didn't listen. I don't care about statistics, I cared about ME and what my life would be like post-operatively. My goal was and is to reduce my excess weight by at least 50% and to KEEP IT OFF permanently. It was not to lose 100% of my excess weight and set some sort of speed record doing it. Banding does indeed require more attention to work correctly. But I don't see that as a negative--I need to continually be mindful of this lifelong project I'm engaged in and band adjustments go a long way in that direction. Behavior modification is a HUGE part of any weight loss program and occasional refreshers help a lot. Your surgeon's office may have fewer surgical followup visits recommended for band patients, because the surgery itself is vastly safer and has changed nothing about your digestive system. You will not suffer malnutrition and so you don't need to be watched as closely for problems. But that's not to say you just have surgery and walk away, expecting it to work, YOU will need to schedule adjustments as needed, perhaps up to five times or more. Everyone is different in that regard. But without close attention to followup care and the correct adjustment levels you will not be as successful as you might otherwise be losing weight with the band.

    PacifiCare Came Through---YAY!!

I have Pacificare PPO and was told they do not cover the band but might cover the bypass. Can you guys tell me whether you have a PPO plan or an HMO plan?
  18. I have lapband, so pardon if this doesn't apply to bypass. Why are you concerned that you have no desire to"eat" protein? Lots of times I dont wanna eat anything solid.....but I still get my protein in no problem. I use protein shots. 42 grams in 3 ounces. ...been using them for years. But again, I'm lapband.

Do you think that we can get depressed after the bypass because our hormones are changing? Thanks. Nancy G
  20. Hi All, My name is Carol and I live in Melbourne Australia and will be having Lab Band surgery late in November. I am 5ft 9" and nearly 120 kilos I have always been a big person and all tried diets have failed and end up putting more back on that I lost in the first place. I will be having my lapband surgery at Knox Private Hospital and would like to know how others have gone after surgery. I am extremely nervous about after the anasetic as I usually have violent vomitting. At the moment I eat very fast and do not chew my food thoroughly, I have been told that I will learn quickly as I will not like the consquences if I don't. Does anyone have any hints before hand. Getting excited to hopefully be a new person. Looking forward to hearing from you:heh:

    Just Starting Out...

Just had my psychological eval today....it went well...the report will be sent to my doctor next week....the only thing left is to take the H.pylori test on November 30th...wishing for good result from the H.pylori test...
  22. Hey i'm in PA and i'm 15. I got the band in November at Dupont. I started the program at 14 and 14 was the min age. When dealing with us minors, the doctors are a lot more strict. How heavy is your daughter? Because you need to be 100lbs overwieght to even be elgible for it.
  23. Today I was at a community party with lots of yummy food. I prepared my typical plate, you know, the plate with tablespoons of food dotted around it (90% plate and 10% food). As I started to eat, a very nice lady I knew sat down with me. Last time i saw her was November and she was considerably bigger then. Today she was heavy, but not really really heavy like before. She immediately commented on how thin i looked, and I responded in kind. She had lost 70 lbs since November, Hmmmm i'm thinking..... So here is the interesting thing....her plate looked just like mine! I did not want to ask her and be rude, but i was mighty curious!
  24. Just wanted to stop on and say hello to everyone. My bypass surgery is planned for January 24th so it is coming up very soon. I went to an all day seminar in June at the hospital to learn about the different options and started all my pre-requisites for surgery from there. Initially, I thought six months would take forever but the time has really gone fast. I finished up everything on November 30th and was approved for surgery on December 21. I am a RN and have done tons of research and feel very confident that I am making the best choice for myself to get my health back on track. Any advice is appreciated and I look forward to getting to know people
