Amid concerns for artificial sweeteners, more products are coming into the bariatric world that contain either stevia or monk fruit, which are naturally derived sweeteners. Stevia is actually a shrub. Monk fruit is an Asian melon and may be listed as luo han guo on the ingredient list. Several powder and liquid forms of water flavors now use stevia. These are easily available in grocery stores. Stevia can be plain stevia or listed as Truvia, which is a combination of stevia and erythritol. Erythritol is a naturally occurring sugar alcohol and will have a few calories. For powder forms of water flavors, look for the Crystal Light Pure and the Great Value version from Walmart. Crystal Light Pure does have four grams sugar per half-packet, so some patients may not be able to tolerate this product. In the liquid drop form, brands to look for include MIO with stevia, Great Value version, Skinny Girl, Sweet Leaf and Stur. Add enough of these products to taste right for you. Too much can get super sweet in a hurry. For protein powders, look for Jay Robb and Syntrax Nectar Naturals. Even yogurts are joining in the natural sweeteners trend. Look for the Greek style yogurts Chiobani Simply 100 (has stevia and monk fruit) and Oikos Triple Zero (has stevia, look for black label). Experiment with different stevia or monk fruit sweetened products to see what you like.

I am 7 weeks post op and am having difficulty with vomiting after eating meat or fish. I will chew it for at least 60 seconds and even after a bite or two I will throw up everything and it tends to continue for a few hours. I grill my meat or broil it with no oils and I do not understand why I can't keep it down. I can't even do protein shakes as they make me sick so i'm living off of yogurt and i have oatmeal in the morning. My doctor put me on meds but it's making it worse. I'm not losing a ton of weight. I have to add that my surgery was a revision to 2 previous nissen fundoplications so I also had work on my esophagus . Can anyone recommend anything else I can eat to get my protein? Also, any suggestions on incorporating fish or chicken without getting sick. Ren

December 2013 Need some help
I'm losing it! replied to caitiegirly07's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello. I hope this might help you. I bought from Amazon (you can find in any drug store), a pill dispenser that is Sunday thru Saturday and has FOUR (4) spots for your daily pills. This allows me to seperate my Vitamins with Iron from my Calcium citrate etc. My boxes have Morning/Noon/Evening/Bed on them.....I normally take things around 9 am/1pm/5pm/8pm ish..........this dispenser is one big one that allows you to POP OUT that daily only and leave the rest at home...so, I have them on the go with me. I do my pills weekly along with my hubbys etc...it's easy, handy and I don't have to open up a zillion bottles each day, all day. For food ideas.....I am 6 weeks post op, gastric bypass. I have no issues with food. Doing a high Protein greek yogurt in am, lots of fish, shrimp, turkey and chicken. Plenty of cheese too. It's all about the protein first! I am doing 1/3 cup per mini-meal. I am doing three meals a day, getting in TONS of Water (all zero calorie) and getting in about 65-80 grams of protein per day. Sometimes, I only get in about 50 grams.......it's tricky, but it's working! I am 37.5 pounds down in exactly six weeks....and I am losing one pound a day right now, (for the past 7 days). I hit a 13 day stall and was so upset! I was eating too many calories. So, I am down to 800 cal's max per day and I am losing like crazy. Good luck to you!! -

Yay, I did it! I got my happy fat butt up and went to the gym at 5:00 am this morning and did my cardio. Per the BFL challenge, I am to do my cardio 3x's per week first thing in the morning. So, today was cardio day, I sure didn't want to get up, but I forced myself up and did it. Feels so good to have won this morning! I didn't let my evil twin talk me into staying in bed, lol. Usually I get this little voice in my head and that says "oh, come on, you don't have to get up, you can work out tonight". But this time, I just got up and did it. Yay! Menu today: Bfast cottage cheese mixed with yogurt Meal 2 hummus (2 TBSP) carrots/tomatoes Meal 3 Turkey meatloaf edamame beans Meal 4 peach string cheese Meal 5 Stuffed Bell Pepper Wt - Didnt weigh this morning. -
Congrats on the amount of meds you take now! That is great! As far as the foods, it was alot of figuring out on my part. But, just try different things...Like...Beans and sour cream, with cheese and maybe some salsa or sugar free and fat free frozen yogurt with some fat free whipped topping. yum! Or you can try any of the sugar free and fat free puddings, jell-o and add the whipped topping, great snack! Grits, eggs, oatmeal, cream of wheat and applesauce are good too. Mashed potatos, soup-at-hand soups are great! Just play with it a little, you are doing great so far!

i'm eating about a 1/2 cup at a time. very rarely am i full with that -- i'm forcing myself to stop eating. i figure the hunger is normal at this stage. i've lost that immediate post-surgery (where a 1/4 cup of yogurt would make me feel like i had had 4 plates of Pasta carbonara), but i'm definitely not ravenous. well, except for yesterday when i had less than 60 grams of Protein. i noticed around 4pm that i was super fatigued and hungry. (drank 1/2 a Protein shake and was MUCH better within minutes.) i think until we get fills, we're pretty much "dieting" on our own, or with minimal help from our bands.

So dr's orders are plenty of liquids but only 1-2 ounces in. 15 minute time frame. Anyone else have this? I find myself parched and I am really trying to take the dr's orders seriously. So help would be nice He also has virtually no Protein listed on the sheet other than drinkable yogurt - any high protein suggestions there? Thanks Susan

I made mashed potato with broth and greek yogurt (for protein). Then, I pureed minced onions with the mashed potatoes and more broth, and it was yummy.

How much are you eating a year out?
kristieshannon replied to Lilypop's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I’m 14 months out and closing in on goal, so am still in weight loss mode. Here’s a typical day: 6am: Premier protein shake mixed with cold brew coffee 9am: Ooikos triple zero yogurt Noon: Frozen meal (I have 4 or 5 I rotate through, only can eat about 2/3 of a meal) 3pm: 1oz roasted pumpkin seeds 6pm: 3oz meat, 1/3 c veggies, sometimes a sm serving (1/4 cup-ish) whatever starch the family is having 8pm 2 cups popcorn I’m usually around 1100 calories or so, waking 15,000 steps/day and going to a kickboxing class 3x/week Although I’m still focused on losing about 9 more pounds I’m just a touch worried about moving in to maintenance and upping calories. I’m fortunate that my restriction is still in full force. I think I’ll have to up the cal content of my snacks and my meals completely fill me up already. -

Jaelzion replied to Lilypop's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Pretty much everything I eat is either naturally high in protein (like the meat, eggs, yogurt and cheese) or fortified with protein (the coffee and the pudding). Even the almonds have 6 grams of protein. Notice there are no veggies or fruit really - that's because I don't have the capacity to eat things without significant protein and still hit my goal of at least 60 and preferably 75g per day. Over time, hopefully I'll be able to eat more and I can add fruit/veggies back in to some extent. -

I think I’m one of the unusual ones as I eat a lot now & eat all day but my metabolism is seriously working over time. Some days I have to make myself eat cause I’m just not hungry so I try to be very routine in what & when I eat. I can lose 500g if I miss a meal or snack over two days. It took me a few months slowly adding food until I where I am now. My doctors have been wanting me to put on a couple of kgs since January but I haven’t been able to. I’ve actually lost about another 4.5kg in that time. (Told to eat more again by doctor last week - don’t know how I can physically do so.) And I don’t exercise - can’t afford to burn the calories. 8:30 - 1 sachet rolled oats + about 200ml lactose free milk + 15 blueberries (10g protein) 11:30 - 300ml green tea + 6 vita weat multigrain crackers with liverwurst (eat over 60-90 mins) (5g protein) 1:30 - string cheese (5g protein) 3pm - 2 cups salad - combination of lettuce, cucumber, pickled onion, 50g chicken or 100g prawns + dressing (eat over an hour) (10-15g protein) 5pm - 160g tub yo pro yogurt 15g protein) 6:30 - about 80g meat (beef, lamb, pork, seafood) & half cup vegetables (mix of beans, sugar snap peas, asparagus, broccolini or cauliflower). (15g protein) 8pm - fruit (rockmelon, grapes, red paw paw) or 1/3 cup chia pudding (made on milk, milk powder & vanilla extract) or protein bar (10g protein) Seems a crazy amount I know but one day my metabolism will slow again & I’ll have to drop the snacks. Hey Jaelzion how are you getting in that much protein with what you eat? I only get in about 60g. -
Stay away from acidic foods.Get a good probiotic...the ones that are refrigerated....with billions of active live cultures.Greek yogurt(plain) .Eat soothing soft alkaline foods and return to shakes..I have lived with this from my lapband days...stay away from fruits and tomatoes.

I always had yogurt, cottage cheese or refried beans. If it was an on the go snack then I had a protein shake or cheese and lunch meat or tuna. That early out from surgery my snacks were aimed to get my protein in. I would also put PB powder or sugar free Hershey syrup in regular or high protein Fairlife milk.

Hey Amanda, I'm back! I always find it amazing that you can drive forever in Texas and never leave the state. I went to south Texas near Austin and it was a 6.5 hour drive. I got home last night at 11 and had a stomach ache from eating out. While I was gone Sunday (I left after lunch at home)and I ate, 1/4 of a Reuben sandwich and 1 french fry and a chocolate chip cookie. Then on Monday I had brought a Greek Yogurt for breakfast then I ate a crispy taco, and 5 chips and salsa for lunch, and a bowl of potato Soup for dinner with cheese, bacon bits, and sour cream in it. Then when I got home at 11 PM last night my stomach was having fits. I rarely eat out much less eat out for 2 days. My personal opinion is restaurant food is nothing like home cooked food and the salt, fats and preservatives make me sick. So I sat in the bathroom until 1 and then my neighbor started jackhammering up his driveway at 6. And I am finally getting to my excuse of why I didn't run this morning. I felt like crap! But I am not scheduled to run again until Friday so I can run tomorrow instead of today. Sometimes life just gets in the way, the key is to start back tomorrow. Yes, its hot here, I have been running at 7:30 but on Sunday it was 85 degrees and 85% humidity so I am going to have to start going earlier probably shoot for 6:30. I agree with getting your eating lined out and the move on to the exercise. I don't have the mental capacity to change more than one thing in my life at a time. The good news is that I managed to lose a pound. It took 11 days this time. But I only have 9 to go so thats only 99 days :smile2:. How's it going? -
Lorrie1, I am glad I could help. as for the "liquid diet", you are right it is mostly things like yogurt and strained soups etc. Basically, you are trying to shrink your liver before the surgery and not irritate your stomach afterward. My docs' rule of thumb was "If you can get it through a straw, you can have it". I almost had that NY Strip through the straw by day 7, but.....no, I am kidding. I was so excited and nervous about the surgery, and busy second guessing myself, it really went by quickly. I started watching those shows on the Discovery channel like "Super Obese" and some others and thinking that I should be able to do this on my own, I shouldn't need the surgery, blah, blah, blah. Then I decided that I should not "should" on myself. This was something I wanted to do and needed to do so I could lose the weight and keep it off, once an for all! I wanted to be healthy, and now I am. It was one of the best decisions I ever made. Back to the liquids, my hubby made me this awesome pumpkin Soup when I was on the pre-op and post-op diet and it was a lifesaver. It's not sweet so it does not taste like pie, it is a savory soup that is very dinner like (I first had pumpkin soup at an upscale restaurant). Pumpkin has a lot of Fiber so it makes the soup really stick with you for a while and keeps things moving in the lower regions. You can also substitute butternut squash if you want. I have attached the recipe in a Word document. I think you will like it if you give it a try. I also have a list of pre-op tips like doing all of your shopping including getting a stool softener ahead of time. The combination of pain meds and reduced Fluid intake (while you learn to coordinate you food/fluid intake) tends to constipate a lot of people and you don't want to strain, so a softener REALLY helps. You don't want to take a laxative because you have so little food intake that you don't want to rush the nutrients out of your body. Anyway, I will look for that list and post it for you. Meanwhile, here is the pumpkin soup recipe. Pumpkin Soup Recipe.doc

Well, I wish I had read my post op instructions better. I could have sworn it said that I was to only have clear liquids and Protein shakes for the first 4 weeks. After 2 weeks of that, I was starving, so I started adding tomato Soup to the mix. The whole time I thought I was cheating. After 2 yrs, I re-read my instructions for the heck of it. It said "Full liquids" to include: yogurt, cream Soups, applesauce and pudding. I was literally starving to death! And that whole time I felt guilty for "cheating"! My dr's instructions were the first 4 weeks were to be full liquids (as I said above), then 1 week of soft foods (like scrambled eggs, egg salad, tuna salad, mashed potatoes, yogurt, etc), then normal foods. Never had to do mushies. Thanks God, couldn't imagine putting all of my food in a blender and actually enjoying it! Let me tell you, those first bites of mashed potatoes were the best thing I've ever eaten! After 4 weeks of nothing but liquids! Good luck! Marci

I was sleeved 9/28/15. I struggle to get in enough calories to stay out of starvation mode but I'm doing ok hitting my Protein of 60 or more grams a day. I eat every morning one turkey sausage link, (almost) one egg and a tablespoon of shredded cheddar for Breakfast. For morning snack a light baby bell cheese, lunch is 2oz of protein and a light laughing cow cheese wedge. I try to eat a light Greek yogurt for afternoon snack. dinner is about 2 oz of whatever protein I am making for my family for dinner. And if I haven't hit my protein for the day I'll have a cup of Kroger carb master chocolate milk (11grams protein in 8oz). I am trying to not do the Protein shakes unless I have a really low day with food intake. I also can't eat more then just about the 2 oz at a time so that's why I have to do the Snacks in between. Some days I also will eat a cup of Smartlife light white cheddar popcorn for a snack. Even with the snacks and all most days I barley hit 600 calories. I track everything through my fitness pal. Thank you for sharing. Great info. What exactly is the amount to stay clear of starvation? I struggle to get in 400 to 500 calories daily unless I push to eat in between meals.

My fill nurse told me to go to the cafe in the hospital after my fill and eat some yogurt. He said the yogurt should go down easy without feeling it come up or without a struggle. Even if you have some swelling it you should be able to get some thick liquid down. Call your doctor.

Greek Yogurt
Beth Brady Culberson replied to chanale's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thank you for sharing this idea!! I have never liked plain yogurt! But I need it due to a yeast infection from the antibiotics at surgery time! I am 1 week and 1 day out of surgery! Thank you so very much!! -
I would mix in some flavored protein powder or Torani SF syrup - or both! On purees I was also allowed to stir in a spoonful of peanut butter or almond butter and that was really good. I don't know if that sort of thing is allowed on your plan though. I wasn't allowed yogurt on full liquids so it was a little different for me in terms of what I could add to yogurt when I was allowed to eat it!

make sure you get the plain yogurt. the fruit and even vanilla have a lot of sugar in them. I bought the Smuckers sugar free preserved and put that in the yogurt. good flavor, little calories and no sugar.
