Will it work for me - if I can, I will cheat
Tiffykins replied to pingu's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
First off, there are just as many bypass patients that have significant regain because ALL of the weight loss surgery choices can be cheated. The malabsoprtion of calories/carbs/fats only lasts about 2 years, and then intestinal adaptation takes over, and all you'll have is the restriction of a stretchy pouch. So, if you're going to cheat, any of the surgeries will fail. If you do not address the emotional/mental aspect of making better food choices, none of the surgeries will work long term. Hate to be "debbie downer", but there's way too many stories of people getting surgery, and then regaining in 3-5 years out because they never worked on their relationship with food. You can check out the revision forum on obesityhelp.com and see just how many RNY patients are looking for revision because they've gained back hoards of weight, and can't lose it again even with diet and exercise. I removed the word "cheat" from my vocabulary when it comes to what I eat now. I just have to decide if the food I'm choosing to put in my mouth is nutrient dense or junk food. If I want to have junk, have I compensated it by ensuring I've eaten or will eat my Protein that day? Long term results with bypass and sleeve patients are only about 3-5% higher weight loss numbers for bypass patients. So, long term, you're looking at the same issue if you choose to not address your mental tie to food. My recommendation is to not have surgery until you are ready with other coping mechanisms in place to deal with food. Finding a support group, counselor that has experience with weight loss surgery patients are your best bets. They operate on our stomach, the rest of it is up to us because our brains are in control. You have to make the effort and constant choice on what to put in your body. I can still suck down a huge milkshake every day without issue, and so can my dearest friend that had bypass about 4 years ago. The big difference is, I choose to NOT do it, she does, and she's gained back 50 of her 150lb loss. -
Maybe she feels more comfortable with the sleeve as surgery. I do agree with what was said already. I would also add, don't let a surgeon push you into what they want you to have. I don't believe that the regain rate is any higher at 5 years than gastric bypass, and I don't believe that the sleeve has been used long enough to have any way to compare the surgeries. My surgeon told me that people are more successful if they have the surgery they feel is best for them since they have ownership on the procedure.

This happened to me as well. I was banded in Mexico, and as happy I was to get the procedure there's not alot of extra information handed out from them. I was banded in July of '04, got my first fill in August, and didn't lose anything between then and November when I got my 2nd fill (after I'd found the forums and learned that it wasn't MY fault!!).

Hey All, I am in the very early stages of considering Lap Band surgery. I am 33 years old, weigh 260, 5'6". Thankfully my BP is borderline / good (depending on the day) but I have had high cholesterol since high school and about a year ago, my liver enzymes went above normal (I do not drink and things such as hepatitis and other liver diseases were ruled out, and my liver ultrasound was normal, but it may be related to my weight). I am not on any meds. I also have a neurological disorder that I was born with. While I am mobile, my legs are quite weak, which means I have to be creative with my exercise. I've tried some dieting in the past, but have not had any long term success. Now my weight just keeps on an upward trend which sucks and I have a tough time with willpower. There is a strong history of cardiac issues / heart attacks on one side of my family and I am fearful of going down that road myself. If I do not get my weight under-control, my fear may become a reality!!! I also want to lose weight as I hope that will help to keep me mobile as long as possible. While my docs do not think that I will progress to needing a wheelchair do to my neuro condition itself, I am afraid that my weight might get to the point where that scale is tipped. I hope that I have a good shot of getting the insurance approval due to my BMI and also high cholesterol. I am going to an informational session next week (just signed up today)! My Mom had WLS last year (gastric bypass) and is doing great! I've been able to see her experience and how much it has benefited her but have also been able to see her struggles, so I feel that I have a realistic view of WLS and what I might be in for. So far, she is the only one that I have told that I am considering this, and she has been very supportive. I know that weight loss surgery is only a tool and in fact, it seems like in some ways it may be harder than regular diet and exercise alone, but I think that my health would really benefit from it in multiple ways! How did you all decide on the lap band versus other types of WLS? I am leaning towards the lap band because I am afraid of the "permanence" of the other procedures. (AKA, if something were to go wrong - even if risks are small - it could be reversed. I also have GI issues, so I really do not want to be messing around with my gut by getting a bypass). That being said, I do hope that the lap band will lead to positive permanent change!!! Any other advice??? I am sure that I will come up with many more questions down the road. I'll be back!

Good Morning and welcome to the forums. They were a Godsend to me before I had my surgery because they answered so many of my questions. I hope we'll be helpful to you as you go through your Weight Loss Journey. Which surgery? Okay, I thought I wanted the big one, the bypass, thinking I'd lose more weight and it'd be less "permanent" than cutting off part of my stomach for the sleeve. But my primary care doctor and my psychiatrist advised me that they opinion was that the bypass was "too radical" for my size (260 lbs) and so I opted for the sleeve. I'm very happy with the sleeve. It restricts my ability to overeat. That being said, it's a personal decision and you'll have to research all your options to find the one that you're the most comfortable with. In terms of losing 15 lbs, your bariatric office will assign you a nutritionist and he/she will give you guidelines but they are basically < 1500 calories/day, 60 g protein/day, 64 oz water/day, limit carbs and sugars and salts.

Training Session: Diet, Exercise, Post-op...
Lanakila replied to BDS_Geologist's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Yaaaaayyyy...we're band buddies! I'm on the 28th I wasn't put on any kind of pre-op diet, but I've self-imposed a 2 shake-decent dinner regimen on myself. I don't want to have the fat liver thing and have to be split open, you know? I know that folks here have lost LOADS of weight on their pre-op diet, but I'll be happy if I can just maintain. We'll see at the Friday Morning Weigh-In! Men lose faster (note I did not say "easier"), and you are getting banded instead of bypassed, so no wonder your materials were different. Did they say anything that you hadn't already figured out with your own research? I cannot imagine having to sit through 4 hours of that stuff! A week from tomorrow! -
Anyone Banded is Dallas, TX
JuneAct2 replied to Dark_Lovely's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I went through TLCEdge in Plano. My surgeon was Victor Gonzalez. He was great. He was patient. He answered all my questions. His office staff was very helpful. I would recommend him to family and friends. However, if memory serves, Dr. Kim may be one of the surgeons they use. Don't hold me to that, though! I go back to TLCEdge for my fills. Turn around time for appointments is great! The longest I've had to wait was about 7 minutes. Most of the time I'm in within a couple of minutes. The staff is absolutely wonderful. You can go to a group seminar with them, or schedule a one-on-one seminar. I was self pay so I went for the private seminar. My first meeting with them was October 21, 2008 and I had surgery November 6, 2008. The website is www.tlcedge.com. Click on surgical weightloss. Best of luck to you! -
Progress of some sort...
TijuanaPlication replied to mednar's topic in Gastric Plication Surgery Forum
Congrats on the progress. BTW you alarmed me for a second. I thought you were saying chowchows was having gastric bypass surgery, but then I remembered it was gallbladder surgery LOL! -
Same as apple203.... but told me to bring the accessories (tube, mask etc) and they’d have the base machine. They didn’t have one but I was asked why I wasn’t using my cpap about 20 Times over the two nights stay bc I was having a hard time breathing while sleeping. (They monitor your vitals obviously through the wires etc) Long story short—. Bring yours! Anyone Banded in Saranac Lake, NY??
WannaBMe replied to blondie13654's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Blondie, Last year I went to an information session held at AMC - Drs. Hill and Hixon spoke. It seems like a really good program - since my initial meeting last year I have met a couple of people who have been banded there, and some that had the bypass procedure. Regardless of the surgery, they all seem to be doing well and have nothing but good things to say about the MDs and all staff involved. Actually, I have my first real appointment set up in a couple of weeks ... I'm really excited! :tongue2: If you think about it realistically - Heuvelton isn't really that far from Saranac Lake, especially if you can feel confident in the MDs and pending results! All involved in the information session were very positive and friendly. There was a woman at the session who had been banded about 4 months earlier and she looked great - she said she feels so much better and hasn't been as happy in years! Hearing those kind of stories is really inspiring. My hubby went with me -- he was really skeptical before the session, but was thoroughly convinced afterward that it is a great option! Good luck! -
Anyone Banded in Saranac Lake, NY??
Neenco replied to blondie13654's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Yes, Albany Medical Center and as I got reading through the thread, I began to wonder what AMC meant for you. At Albany Medical Center we were given the Mediterrenean Diet. They teach us to each normal foods pre-op so we know how to each post op, after initial post-op diet. Post op was 1 week of clear liquids, 1 week of full liquids like tomato soup, then 2 weeks of mushies, like yogurt and cottage cheese and probably something else.....but I'm too tired to remember right now. If you provide me with an email address, I'll be glad to email you the pre-op diet we were given and any info I can find on the post-op diet. The biggest thing I still struggle with after 11 months is to remember to eat slowly and chew my food. I still have to make choices that are good for myself, so I don't eat junk food. For dinner, I had 1/2 ham sandwich, 1/2 c low fat yogurt and 1/2 c low fat cottage cheese & 1/2 c grapes. It's really a lot food and a nice variety. Hopefully you have support groups up north.....we have them weekly for general weight lose surgery, so it includes bandsters and bypassers and monthly we have a lapband group. I do as many of them as my schedule allows, because the support post-op is very important. Get me an email address and I'll be glad to email whatever I can get my hands on. Thanks for writing! Stay in touch. -Dineen  -
I called my claims administrator today, I was starting to get panicky about the timeline, and someone offered me some solid advice and calmed me down until I could call. I'm very concerned about being able to have my sleeve done before the end of the year. Effective January 1st, my insurance will change, and I will lose my bariatric surgery coverage. I started this process officially end of July, but had seen my PCP in June and July to try and see what could be done about my weight. So, I called. We rearranged my appointments a little bit to get about another week squeezed into my timeline. I'm up for team review the 25th of September, from there, I schedule my consultation with the surgeon. I'll have two more visits to meet insurance requirements, the last one is on November 1st. After my appointment I call this gal back and she submits everything to my insurance. She said it should take a week, but we'll have an answer by November 8th. After that, it's just a matter of pre-op, and scheduling surgery. Could be all said and done as early as December 6th. SQUEE

I got mine at the end of January. I was ready to go in November 2009, but I had to wait for the new year for my flex med insurance to kick in. If I could have done it in November I would have! I gained 10 pounds over the holidays and if I would have had my band, I probably would've lost 10. I'm 7 months in and I've lost about 64 pounds. Go for it, girl!!

I am new here and hoping I am doing this right! I am on the fourth of six months pre-op. At my last appointment, the surgeon said he was shooting for the end of April for my surgery date! I am still undecided on which surgery to go for, by gastric bypass is in the lead so far. If anyone can share their thoughts, it would be great. My reason for WLS Is my back. I will most likely need surgery in the very near future per my back specialist and need to lose a significant amount of weight first. I was 340 when I started this journey and am now at 304. Any thoughts?

I am also going to be having bypass and turning 30 I am so happy for you where are you from! Go luck to you!!

Well, it's Feb. now and although I did go down to 187, I am back up to 192. I hate myself so bad. I have gotten 3 fills, and I know the band is there because when I am really hungry, I eat too fast and the food gets stuck, it's very painful. I had foot surgery on Dec.15th and have not been able to exercise since. I can ride my bike now, but it is too cold. I am at a standstill and disgusted with myself. My friend who had her gastric bypass the same day I had this is down 96 lbs. That really made me depressed. I have no will power and really should have gotten that done. I ate right today but ate 2 cup cakes tonight. I pray I can get this right. I am ashamed:think that I did not loose more. My family wonders why. Patti

i couldnt help it. i am completely addicted to weighing myself. when the scale is going down, i am fine. but when it goes up or stays the same it just discourages me. thankfully, right now, i am eating right and working my ass off so it is going down. like 5 pounds so far this week!! my recent fill has finally kicked in and is nice and restricting! unfortunately, i am REALLY tight in the mornings and even shakes are tough to get down. but this is the time of the month i am normally tigher than usual, so i am feeling i will open up a bit relatively soon. my couch to 5k is going very well. i love the running (i almost said runs, but that just wouldnt look right ) i average 3.9-4.0 MPH for the entire 30 mins. my "low" is about 3.7 during my brisk walk and my high today was 4.7 for about 20 seconds, my normal high is about 4.4-4.5 MPH. those 90 seconds sometimes c r a w l by though! and of course, the 2 mins walking fly by!! ???? i dont get it. only 11.75 more pounds until i hit 150 gone for good. wow. i need to keep doing the low carb and working out to see if i can drop it by mid November. my realistic goal is by the end of November. how about that rants & raves thread about goal weights... ???? wowwow. i actually do see everyone's point of view. i am not chastizing anyone for picking a high goal weight, but for me, i did not have someone cut me open and shove a foreign object around my belly to still be obese!!! hope you are all well..

Understanding daily intake when closing in on goal
Babbs replied to Djmohr's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Your menu and calories look good. With you not being able to excerise much, I would think your caloric intake is pretty spot on at this point. But your body obviously has become complacent, so something needs to give. I'm at goal, but still want to lose a few more pounds for a buffer. I have lost 2 pounds in about 2 and a half weeks. Not record breaking weight loss, but loss none the less. I'm going to suggest upping your calories to 1250-1300 if possible. I notice when I eat more than usual, the weight comes off. Also, since you are so close to goal, have you tried adding carbs in the form of whole grains to your diet? I have also done that since month 11, and have experienced steady weight loss more or less. I'm not saying to go crazy with them, but a piece of multi grain toast with your eggs, or a little brown rice with your protien? I know you're bypass, so I don't know how those will effect your little pouch, either Try that for a week or 2 and see how it goes? -
Anyone Doing The C25k Program In The Warren Area?
nicksmommy posted a topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Hi everyone! I am trying to get back on the right track with my band again (banded in October 2008. Until recently, last time I saw my surgeon for a follow up/fill was March 2009). I went back for my first return visit in November, and am going back for my 3rd tomorrow. I am excited to already see what a difference it is making. I recently heard the expression "It's like having a fast car, but not being able to drive it because you haven't put any gas in it" and makes total sense in relation to not utilizing my band. Anyway.... I am trying very hard to get back on track and want to incorporate different exercise as well as changes in my diet. Has anyone in the area done the C25K program? I never have been a runner, but this program really intrigues me. Running a 5K would be an awesome and attainable goal!! I am also looking for a support group in the area if anyone has information on that also. Thanks! -
Freaked myself out by reading Negative experiences. Give me the truth, please.
mrsto replied to PuraVida37's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
It's so true about the other sites being "anti-band". When I started out researching, I went on all of the websites, and found Thinner Times and Obesity Help to be very negative towards the band. I also read many horror stories from people with the bypass, so clearly, the margin for complications is present no matter which way you go. As stated above, yes, there is continuous aftercare with the band, as opposed to the other surgeries. However, the band can be removed if there are major issues, and most all of the time, everything returns to its pre-band state. THAT alone was my reason for going with the band. I was very clear that my work would start the minute my eyes opened from surgery.....and I was okay with it. No matter what surgery, the work has to start at some point, and I was fine having that be immediate. Being 5 months out, I have no regrets, and I'm still thrilled with my choice. -
How are you doing? My recovery from the bypass was easy. I dare say easier than mine from my band. Only thing is I had an ulcer form on my bowel 6 weeks later, and start bleeding. It was because of adhesions. I lost 6 cms of my bowel because of it. They cleaned up what they could of adhesions, and I've been good since. Other than the constipation. That is a big issue. But I don't eat much at all. Most days I can't even get two ounces of meat/food at a time. My body is often in starvation mode. well my dog is yelling to go out. So I'll go now. teri

Good luck Maybell, you'll be happy you had your surgery. I had mine November 17th and believe me when I say the pre-op diet is the hardest. Your stomach is still regular size and so is your appetite. I took appetite suppressants to get me through as I was starving. Now that I'm banded and have one fill behind me, it is much much easier. Be tough, get to the surgery with your liver shrunken and you will be very happy you did. Best of luck to you and others reading this blog. I'm only a couple of months ahead of you, Once you're banded it will be much much easier.

Welcome to LBT! Take a while, look around. There is a forum that has just the questions you are looking for, here's the link, but you can find it on the main page under Lapband FAQ's and References. http://www.lapbandtalk.com/lap-band-faqs-f73.html Here's a list I took with me: Questions to ask during consultation: 2) Research the doctor. What kind of follow up care is provided? (ie: fills, unfills, endoscopies, fluroscopies, port revisions, removal, etc). Ask to speak to about 5 or 6 of his patients before you make a decision. Ask those people if they have any complaints or issues with their care before, during and after the procedure. How many of the procedures has he done? What types of complications can occur from this procedure and how frequently do they happen? (ie: perforations, etc) What types of complications has he personally ran into doing this procedure? What is his policy when a complication occurs during a procedure? (ie: does he discuss options with family or immediately convert to bypass or other WLS). Is he Inamed approved for the procedure? If not then who qualified him to perform the procedure and can you have literature to verify this? 3) Research the procedure. How is the procedure performed? Will you use the Pars Flaccida approach? What type of sutures do you use? Can I request glue and not staples? Will I have a catheter placed? If I am on my menses, can I wear a tampon? What will I need to have prepared when I get home in way of food items? What are the short term issues? What are the long term issues? How will I be able to take my pills? Will you write today for liquid pain meds? Do you want me to take antibiotics post-op? If so, will you write for Diflucan? 4) Follow up care. What is the schedule for fills? When can I get my first fill? How is the fill procedure performed? (ie: with or without fluroscopy) What is the cost for fills? (under fluro and not) How often will I need to be seen? Will I have access to a Nutritionist? How do you handle unfills? Is there a direct line in case of Emergencies? Does your doctor have email address? Should I continue to take Metformin? What Vitamins should I be taking? Will I need to crush my pills? If so then for how long? Are there any pills that cannot be crushed? If so then how will I be able to take them?

Jewels41 I'm sure you are correct since you worked in a nursing home for 20 years and I'm just an RN student...Would you mind explaining to me how a shot (that is IM...into the muscle, bypassing the stomach altogether) can 1. make you vomit (unless it's just a psychosomatic reaction to the "thought" of getting a shot) and 2. require that you get ANOTHER shot? I've honestly never heard of such a thing (including when I participated in a flu clinic last year...all the patient teaching they had us do etc)...so if/when I encounter this out in the "real world" I'd like to know WHY, so I can educate my patients. Would you share, please? I've tried to figure out why and it just makes no sense to me! Thank you!

I was banded 10/04/11 and between then and August '12 lost about 40lbs. In November I had redness and pain in my port area and my surgeon put me on an antibiotic and the pain and redness resolved. Then about 3 different times between November and August, I would have pain in the port area that would go away the next day after applying heat. Finally, though, in August the pain would not resolve and taking extra strength tylenol did not touch the pain. My surgeon started me on pain medication and his office went to work trying to have a port revision covered through my insurance. I paid cash for my original surgery. After a month, I was finally scheduled for an EGD and possible port revision, but when the doctor did the EGD he learned that the band had eroded into my stomach around the buckle area. This was on a Tuesday and by Thursday I had the band removed and spent 5 days in the hospital. I am not going to sugar coat it, it was awful. I've had surgeries before but this was the most difficult. In fact, it's now 5 weeks later and I'm still dealing with a lot of pain. The surgeon said that this was a very difficult surgery that would require a long recovery. He also said that if I wanted to in about 6 months I could revise to the sleeve. I am extremely down about the whole ordeal. I am so tired of being obese. I have tried every diet/program out there and have not been successful to become thin and healthy. That is why I took such drastic measures in getting the lapband, I need help outside of myself. So, I don't know what to do now. The lapband surgery was difficult, the removal was even more difficult and to consider another surgery scares me. Thanks for "listening"...I just don't know what to do. =(
