    Sugar Alcohols.. Yay or Nay?

Sugar alcohols (compared to sugar) have about half the calories but are less sweet so more is used. Since they aren't absorbed completely, they have a lower glycemic response - hence their acceptance on many low carb diets. About 40 - 60% of the sugar alcohol is digested. So my advice would be to avoid them when you're working to shrink your liver. I too followed Atkins (the induction phase for over a year), and never let sugar alcohols go by free and clear. I ALWAYS counted them in my carb allowance, because I was still absorbing them. A lot of people think they go through unabsorbed, but unfortunately that's not the case.

Moving Onto The Next Stage Of Food?

The reason some have different rules is for healing, but also for your head to mend too. We obviously can't eat correctly, or we wouldn't be here now, if you imagine going back to being a child liquids, to purée, purée to solids, your making simple choices re training your mind to appreciate food a lot more savoring basic foods, and then when you are totally fed up with one stage and you move on to the next you really enjoy that food, a food that before your op you wouldn't have even looked twice at because its not covered in cheese or loaded with calories. It's helping you to eat like everyone else. Steady and slow draw it out as long as you can, you have the rest of your life to eat, make the most of this opportunity xxxxx

what can i do to increase weightloss

Eat less, move more. Focus on protein and complex carbs to help satisfy hunger. Food logs and counting calories are key for me.

    paleo diet?

I had my surgery 2 weeks before you did. 69 lbs since then. I haven't worked out in a month, BUT I was doing crossfit for a bit. I say 90% because sometimes I have oatmeal or a piece of cheese. Not often but I do. I stay between 700-900 when I don't work out and 1000-1300 when I do work out. I do have a day during the month that i hit 1400 calories but that has been 2x in two months. I have not had a fill at all and I and changing my dieting lifestyle habits. I don't want to rely on fills. I eat extremely clean. I try to eat one ingredient foods!! Good Luck!

    Protein Shakes?

OK, here's what I know, for what it's worth. I'm learning as I go along, and just share what I know... I'm willing to read labels and bring in more info, because I just ASSUME (silly me) that everyone is kind of on the same page. I didn't research how Mexico works, because I didn't do that. So... My surgeon is part of a group that includes him, two dieticians (or, on here, NUTs), an exercise physiologist (trainer) with a gym we can use, an insurance coordinator (my hero), a nurse-case manager, and an office manager. The program involves seeing the NUT and the trainer every month to meet the insurance requirements that their coordinator knows by heart because it's all she does. She gets us approved! The nurse case-manager handles the medication change questions, and other individual things like CPAP and heart and diabetes... So we see her when we are having our freak outs. She's just left, and they are hiring a replacement (not that she can be replaced, but another one, anyway). And monthly support groups. So the program IS the dietician who knows bariatrics. The surgery happens, but it's the tool we use with the NUT program and the gym work we do. I'm shocked that you don't have a NUT. HOWEVER, don't freak out at weight loss numbers. I was sleeved May 13, BUT that was after I had lost almost 60 lbs already, through diet and exercise with the program. (shocked me, let me tell you). I'm thinking I'm losing slowly now, but when we're in a stall, here's what they ask us: Are you tracking your food (measuring and weighing and writing it all down)? are you hitting your Protein goals (they set them based on gender and height. I'm 5'10" and a girl and mine is 85g / day)? Are you getting your fluids (64 oz of non-calorie, but your Protein shake counts)? No caffeine, no carbonation. Low carb diet. No more than 5 eating points a day. A shake a day. (if pressed, they will give a calorie target, mine is like 1000/day). Eating your Vitamins? No more than 1 c of food at a time. Does that help? Feel free to ask me more questions. I have lots of paperwork that I refer to - I'm a scientist

    Feeling Guilty

I know how you feel, I feel that way with regard to my DH. He has a smaller weight problem than I had, his BMI is probably 32 or so, but that's enough to get banded in Australia, particularly since he has high blood pressure. He's got a weight problem not because he overeats, but because he spends an hour and half in the car to get to work, sits at a desk all day and then spends an hour and a half in the car to get home. He has to do all those stupid business lunches and drinks and Australian culture is so "blokey" - men do not refuse to drink and eat salads at a business lunch. He never overdoes it but they're still high calorie meals. Not to mention the fact that being the accountant he is, we spent the $3,000 to get me banded becuase he knew how much it meant to me but he would never in a million years spend that kind of money on himself when it could be paid off the mortgage. And since he doesnt eat that much anyway, and basically sticks to healthy food, I suspect he'd be a slow slow loser as a bandster. His problem is more that he needs to get not only more exercise but more incidental activity and he seriously probably needs to do some huge weights work to pack some muscle on to try to lift his metabolism. But he doesnt have the time. I seriously feel guilty for spending the money and the time I've spent on myself. The hours I spend exercising are indulgent - the house goes uncleaned and errands go undone because I place more value on myself. Which is fine, but my husband doesnt get the same opportunity.
  7. My procedure is Jan 7th. Right now I am doing 1200 calories with 80 grams of protein. What are you doing for pre op diet?

    alcohol

Most vets advise that you start slowly with alcohol at first, because it may affect you differently than before surgery. So it might be a good idea to try a glass of wine at home, where it doesn't matter if it ends up hitting you really hard. Then you'll have some idea of how much you can drink while you're out and be okay. Also, be careful that alcohol doesn't become a substitute coping mechanism to replace the food you can't eat anymore. It might sound alarmist but transfer addictions have happened to people (I had to check myself because I found myself shopping to get the emotional soothing I used to get from food). Other than that, factor those calories into your into plan and enjoy!

    Day 1 Liquid Diet

Day 3 for me and I can only have clear liquids and Popsicles of course. I love the Popsicles, it's like heaven. I also have some hot and sour soup because it's high in protein and very low in fat. That seems to help along with the protein shakes. I am getting in about 600-650 calories a day. I am also catching up on sleep because if I can't eat, I may as well sleep. My headache isn't so bad today.

    Day 1 Liquid Diet

@@Jen D My surgery Date is also December 3rd and I started my pre op diet today. So far it is going OK, it ends up being about 1200 calories between the Protein shakes and the veggies. How are you feeling today? Luckily I don't have to cook for anyone else or have any other "bad" foods in my house.
  11. Sleeved on 6/30 and EXTREME fatigue the last 2 days. I take all my B12 and B1 Vitamins but I have a hard time getting in my Multivitamins. I get between 50-60 Proteins daily and less than 10 carbs. Calories are around 600-700. I do have a hard time getting in more than 32 oz of Water though. The eating and then waiting to drink is part of the problem for me on getting enough water in. Has this happened to anyone else? My husband is getting concerned because I literally have no energy to do anything...

    New here

Welcome aboard!! Most will steer you away from 'bars' as they tend to be high in carbs. My surgeon would only let me choose between Unjury and Isopure. Both of their chocolate flavors were decent. Premier Protein's caramel flavor is pretty epic, but it also has more calories and carbs per ounce than Unjury or Isopure. Best of luck on your journey!!
  13. I had surgery 8/27/14 and lost 10 pounds the first week. I am three weeks out today but the scale has NOT moved in the past two weeks. I am tracking my food intake with My Fitness Pal and I am getting plenty of Protein.....eating ONLY things on the "approved" diet list (only about 700 calories a day!).....even joined a gym and am working out almost daily (walking a mile on the treadmill and 20 minutes on the elliptical machine). Even people who don't know I had surgery say they notice I am losing weight. I can tell a difference in my face, my stomach, my backside.....my watch is looser, my rings are looser, my shoes are looser, my pants are looser. How is it POSSIBLE the scale is not moving?????? Experienced sleevers -- HELP!!!
  14. Initially, after my surgery I was told not to snack. They were trying to break the "grazing" habit that many of us have issues with. However, in post surgery visits since, the nutritionist has not admonished me for snacking. They're just more concerned about counting the total number of calories in a day. Again, every surgeon/nutritionist could have different advise for their clients.

7 weeks post op and not hungry

90% of my hunger is "head hunger." I'm 2 weeks post OP and rarely feel true hunger (the stomach growling, aching hunger, the way hunger is SUPPOSED to feel when it is real). As far as protein, I'm getting plenty!!! I highly recommend a tasteless powder by "Genepro: next generation protein powder." The scoop is much smaller and you get a full 30 grams of protein. Plus it's less calories than most: 60 calories. I even put a scoop in my water, for real. I taste a hint of it but it is a clean, very mild taste. Add it to your broth if you're drinking that. You might try that. Powdered skim milk, peanut butter powder. Oikos zero Greek yogurt. All good options! Sent from my SM-G892U using BariatricPal mobile app
  16. Write it all down in My FItness Pal or Fat Secrets (Calorie Counter). My husband tells me that I am obsessive about it. As soon as I get in the car after we go out to eat, then I pull out my Droid and put the information in. I do it everytime I have a snack to. Also, maybe just getting out and exercising a little more. I am sure you have an exercise routine, so try stepping it up to keep those grazing times from coming around as often. I am a grazer, too, so I can identify with your problem, I try to graze on a peach, plums, or carrots, and those aren't a problem, and carrots work your jaws because you really have to chew them to avoid problems. Best of luck. Keep us all posted.

I agree 400 calories is too low. Your body is probably in starvation mode and hanging onto everything.

    Stuck food

Hey, properly made beef jerky's good for you. About 9-11 g of protein per 1 oz serving, and about 50-70 calories. No carbs, low fat.
  19. I am 17 days post op and i have hit a stall. I started mushy food on Sunday and have only lost 1 pound in 5 days !!! Since surgery I have lost 13 pounds. I thought it would be more and im getting a little frustrated. I keep hearing people tell me about the 3 week stall but i dont get it. I am not eating fatting food, i am only eating 3 meals and its low calories... Im hoping this is just a phase and that i start losing more soon.....
  20. I had my surgery 13 months ago and went from 350 to 230. I have been stuck for months at 230. It doesn't matter what I eat and what I do I absolutely cannot go past 230. I walk 2 miles a day, still getting all my Protein in and I average about 750 calories a day. Can someone PLEASE help me and tell me what I'm doing wrong? Sent from my SM-S820L using the BariatricPal App
  21. @@theantichick Please, correct away. I'm able to find the personal stories and before/after pictures. What I'm not able to find (and read in a comprehending manner) is the science. I appreciate all of the input! I'm all about the metabolic changes. As I said above, I struggle most days to eat 1200 calories. I just don't really get hungry. That's why I feared this surgery for so long - portion control and eating in general isn't my issue. I need something to rekajigger my body chemistry!
  22. I lost 127 pounds my first year. I counted calories and my protien to make sure I was getting enough. I never drank a protien shake after the first two weeks. I was pretty much a rule follower 1200- 1400 calories a day 64 oz of Water everyday (or more) never drank soda never drank caffinated coffee (I do now) Never Ever drank with my meals Exercised regularly (but not obsessivly) Ate what I wanted but really made healthy choices. However, if I wanted something that was a "treat", I had it. After that first year (it's been a year and 3 months) i got a little more lax. And my weight loss has shown that. I have only lost 5 pounds in the last 3 months. I think I need to get back to the basic rules and see if I can kick it back in to high gear. Good Luck to you!
  23. I am 9 1/2 months out.... I have lost 124 lbs thius far and have 60-80 to go.... I just followed my Dr's advice and eat 1000 calories each day. I eat 1-2 Snacks and 3 meals. For each of the 3 meals I have 4 oz meat / protien, 1/2c veggies / 1/4c starch. Typicaly my day looks like this: weekday B-fast - Carnation Instant Bfast sugar free / skim milk weekend bfast- 1 egg scrambled, 1 slice wheat toast w/ suga free jelly / 1 slice bacon week day snack - fruit Lunch- 4oz tuna, cup of lettuce / onion, cucumbers/ fat free dressing / 3 triscuts dinner 4 oz meat (broiled, grilled or baked), veggie or salad and 1/2 small baked potato Snack - Skinny cow 100 calorie ice cream bar / mini box of raisins 64 oz Water Its not exciting...but it works!
  24. I found I was consuming way more calories on a liquids than I do with solid foods. I also stay full longer. I started dropping more weight with solids. Sleeve date 12/6/16 HW 225 SW 208 CW 189 GW 130 Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App
  25. Hang TIGHT!!! It all will come together if you do what you seem to be doing. Like was said DON'T stuff yourself. I'm 3 and 1/2 years out and I just now get around 800 to 900 Calories on most days but not all days. I will say that I got below my goal weight in 6 months. I did gain 8#'s but I have maintained my 124#'s for 3 years. I can say I really didn't have any stalls, but I had Strictures starting at my 6 week appointment and continued until Jan 2015. I think that is the reason I lost so fast as I couldn't eat much food. I did have a 3# gain early on but I lost that the next day. I'm not telling you this to brag just trying to help. Keep doing you and you will be successful!!
