Any vegetarians/vegans? I feel lost 2 weeks out :(
painter88 replied to BabyPandaloup's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm almost vegan, I use Dr. Schulze 's (herbdoc.com) protein shake. It doesn't tastes the best, it's mostly made of nuts and other good stuff, Block I mix it with banana and strawberry or blueberry, or whatever I like. -
If you love your skin, don't try Biotin, it won't stop your hair from shedding and it makes a lot of people break out. It isn't worth the risk, imo. The best thing you can do is create and environment that promotes fast regrowth. If your hair is going to fall out, nothing will stop it. a high quality hair Vitamin like, Phyto. Collagen supplements, and exceeding your Protein goals helps. Hair is protein. When I wanted to make my hair grow fast prior to surgery I always increased my protein.

Opinions: My bi-polar sister wants to have my baby.
Lap_dancer replied to Poodles's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
My daughter is bipolar. I know how emotional she becomes. I would not put her in that situation despite the goodness of her heart to want to help you have a child. Remember...what is fine now can be "life or death!!" in an hour.>> If you want to be a parent and have children, there are so many options out there it is head spinning. (went through this with my niece and nephew, she wanted HIS child and she could not carry a child) After her third invetro (that ultimately failed) I simply said...if you want to be a mother, there are babies and children that need mommy's and daddys. They went to Russia and adopted twins. Ask them six months later when they were up at 3 AM feeding, changing and rocking...if they felt like mommys and daddys? (YES) Six years later the children look so much like them like their natural children it still amazes me. -
family giving me a hard time
NMJG replied to marymary1234's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Good luck to you, Mary. I would hope that giving her print outs of lap band revision success stories would help, if she would read it. Perhaps you can get her to come on a forum like this and read about lap band revisions? Many people are very happy with them. The other thing that could help perhaps is giving her the reasons why this is different. In other words, what held you back the first time and why you will be successful this time. Are you prepared to change how you eat forever? Are you ready to commit to Protein first, getting your Water in, and avoiding sliders and non-nutritional carbs as much as possible? Can you give up soda? Will your activity level change? If you are prepared, maybe you can share your preparation plans with her and that will help her get behind you. -
Valentines Day and Sweets

I treated myself to 4 oz Fairlife chocolate milk. Good protein source and satisfied the nagging chocolate desire. -

I'm allergic to dairy protein and can't have anything with dairy or whey. It is not the same as being lactose-intollerant. Does anyone else have this allergy and have they found good non-dairy protein powders? I've found a little at the vitamin shoppe near me, just wondering if anyone has found anything really good I should try. Thanks!
-
I've got the same thing. The only protein I can drink is Unjury. And the only meal replacement I can drink is Chike (it's got 23 g of protein). And for another minus- I'm allergic to soy, so I gotta be extremely careful. Sometimes yogurt will help with the allergy as well. But you can't have that pre op.

I've been doing a lot of research into Protein and noticed there are soy and vegan protein powders out there. I haven't tried them as I have no problem with dairy at the moment. I found them in high end grocery and health food stores (Whole Foods, Vitamin Shoppe, etc.) You might want to try one of these. I do know that Vitamin Shoppe and GNC will let you return anything you don't like. Plus Vitamin Shoppe has a free club card that gives you money back based on how much you spend. Lots of luck!

I got the magic bullet. And I've got all sorts of blenders, food processors, etc. But I find that this is a much more convenient blender. I only use it right now to blend my Protein supplement, my shakes, and my protein smoothies during my liquid pre-op phase. But it's a snap to use and clean and, best of all, it takes up VERY little footprint on my kitchen counter!

In my diet packet, it says to start a full liquid diet on day 3. So, according to my instructions, I'm allowed Protein shakes, yogurt, creamy Soups, that kinda thing. It says always do a Protein Drink first, at least 2 a day. I've only had one so far and it took me 5 hours to finish it. Now just the thought of drinking one makes me feel kinda sick. The gas-x strips aren't really helping either. That taste is just totally grossing me out.. I haven't even really been into the popsicles or jell-o either, so pretty much all I've had is Water. I think it will be ok, just because I've seen a variety of different pre-op diets posted.. some don't start full liquid stuff till later. I know protein is really important though. Honestly, I think I'm kinda scared of losing my hair.. which is why I feel so compelled to go ahead and push myself to do it. Realistically, I know it will probably take longer than 2 weeks for that to actually become an issue. Walking hasn't really been too bad for me. Course, I say that, but I haven't really started doing anything more than just leisurely walks yet. So far I've just been doing a couple laps around my apartment parking lot. I've also been making excuses to go to Target or the mall a million times to wander around. I have a fitbit which tracks how much I've walked and I've tried so far to get at least 3000 steps in a day. I think once my incision pain gets a little better and I feel more comfortable getting sweaty, I'll start increasing my pace. It's kinda weird, but for me.. the fact that I've spent so little time eating has made me feel pretty restless. The good part about it is, it makes me want to get out and be more active instead of just sitting around and stuffing my face! How's your walking going? Are you having any issues with pain still?

Vegetarian getting sleeved? What about protein?
Brandalyn replied to Boogirl6's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I don't think the sleeve is right for you. You may want to look into the band. Protein is our staple for nutrition. -
Thanks for the tips on what to have ready. I am trying to follow the pre-op diet, the dr said it would help make my liver smaller for the surgery. The pre op diet is basically high protein, low carb, low sugar, low fat.... I will admit since the date is just a few days away I am getting exicted, anxious, afraid, impatient..... I too am an emotional eater, and when I went for my psych eval he suggested that I have therapy to help develop more effective coping skills. I had one appointment already, and I really think that will help me. I need a lot of support, and so this forum is great for me, as well as my husband, and my therapist. I CAN DO THIS!

Lettuce? Any problems? How Long?
AvaFern replied to lapnicky's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I ate salad within 6 weeks and I never had an issue. The only problems I noticed would be if I included dressing or cheese. As long as my salad only had lettuce, other veggies, and a Protein, I was good for the most part. I now have a salad almost everyday and I'm at 5.5 months post-op. -
Hello everyone, My surgery (gastric sleeve) is scheduled in a little over two weeks and on Monday I have to start my 2 week high Protein diet, mostly liquid. I have been looking all over the internet for reccomendations on which on the best tasting ones and have been getting mixed reviews. I know that my tastes will change post surgery so I really just need some to get me through the two weeks. Any and all assistance would be most appreciated so I can pick it up this weekend. Thank you so much.

Joining Weight Watchers
OutsideMatchInside replied to GigiRH's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm not sure if it will help just because on weight watchers there are too many way to cheat. The points allowed are too high post surgery. Points is just a gamification of eating, there are so many ways to exploit that system if you want to. The portions and calories they allow are still going to be too much for a sleeve patient. Overeaters Anonymous would probably be a better support option, and it won't cost what Weight Watchers does. What are your portions like? How are you struggling with portion control? Have you tried to reset with liquids for a few days? What is your Protein goal? Are you meeting it daily? Are you snacking? What are your food choices like? -
Please help us fight Obesity!
Sai replied to Alex Brecher's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
1. What are/were your biggest challenges during the weight loss process? (insurance, medication, surgery, maintenance etc): Insurance, especially when they stopped covering lap band adjustments That was one of the main reasons I went ahead with the band to sleeve revision. I just couldn't afford $300 per 0.2cc adjustment, sometimes 2 in one week. It was just too expensive for me. 2. What would you like to have different to solve the problems that you need to face? And why? (new weight loss medication, new surgery approaches, more support groups, new insurance plan etc.): Better insurance plans for WLS patients. Although I know they are aware of how detrimental being overweight is, and I am grateful they cover WLS more now... I still feel that they don't cover enough of the additional things (i.e. fills/adjustments, removing extra skin, therapy, post-op shakes for just the liquid phase of healing) that one needs to further maintain their health. It's like helping an addict for one hospital stay and then putting them out on the street with no further help. Some may make it, and others will slide again. If the insurance companies can keep the WLS patients healthy, they would further save on all the future medical problems of those patients. 3. How much money do you spend for weight loss every year? (food, exercise, support groups, medications etc): Over $2K per year but now that I got the revision to sleeve, it'll be less money spent since I don't have to do lapband adjustments but just routine check ups (doctor check ups, Vitamins and other supplements, meds like PPI, Protein powders). 4. How did you learn about the surgery/medications that you had/used/are using? My bariatric center gave me lots of handouts and a book on everything that I need for the revision surgery (band to sleeve). We also had a nutrition class. I also read a lot on the forums (mainly experiences that others feel that are not usually in a book), and read many scientific and clinical studies. -
I am 4 months post op. I can eat pretty much any kind of good within moderation. I'm still figuring out what works with my sleeve. I'm wondering is it possible that I have stretched my stomach. I don't think that I over eat. I drink one premiere Protein drink in the morning, I drink a bottle of Water (with crystal light), sometimes before lunch I will snack with some trail mix or some occasional chips (approximately a cup full), for lunch I will eat either 4ounces of cottage cheese, Soup or chicken salad, then I'll have a snack again, another Protein Drink and dinner is pretty much the same as lunch. There are times when I will eat a spoonful of rice, a spoonful of scrambled eggs, a half of a sausage patty and one forth of a piece of toast. I consider that meal large now. If I'm feeling like the food that I've eaten is just underneath my sternum, is that considered packed and stretching my stomach, is it that I'm full or have I had just enough? Can anyone answer these questions for me? Am I eating too much? I'm currently only losing like 1 or 2 pounds each week which seems really slow now. Can you stretch your stomach just 4 months after surgery? I need help!! Thanks in advance for anything that you can help with!!! Sent from my VS990 using the BariatricPal App

Nervous, Surgery Date April 30
2012Enoughisenough replied to luann71's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Just breathe. I am having my surgery on April 25 and have been on the pre op diet for 5 days and it was torture at first but it is what it is. I spread out my Protein drinks and am eating sugar free Jello in between. I get a few hunger pains but they pass in a few minutes. What get me through is remembering why I am doing this in the first place. Sent from my iPad using LapBandTalk -
Did I Hear Someone Say Clear Or Flavorless Protein Drink Or Powder?
DELETE THIS ACCOUNT! replied to OldMomOf3's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I use unjury, both the chocolate Splendor and unflavored. You can buy it here: http://www.unjury.com/store/protein/reg/unflavored_protein.shtml -
Have you tried other brands of protein shakes, check out Bariatric Choice.com, they have drinks, puddings, fruit drinks, soups all with about 15 grams of protein each, at this site you can purchase single servings to "try " them out before you spend the money on a larger size.the ones I've tried are pretty darn good. Also try some Ready to drink shakes-cold. Premier protein at Costco, EAS strawberry or fudge-available at many stores and online. Sometimes the RTD shakes are more acceptable for some people. Unjury makes a shake mix with 21 grams of protein comes in strawberry, chocolate, vanilla, unflavored, and chicken soup. Use the unflavored in regular soups or puddings. Try mixing crystal lite with water and adding some vanilla protein powder. Also check out GNC, you can return products even if opened, if they don't go over so well. Good luck. I am 1 month out and am starting to try small (fingernail size) bits of foods or finely chopped items. Eating on chicken and fish, no beef yet. I put tune, a stalk of celery and a bit of mayo in the food processor and it works very well, blend more for puree, less for later. Check out "The world according to Egg face.com. Lots of ideas and recipes."

There are hundreds of whey Protein powers to choose from. The best thing to do is to get samples from different companies and try them. Don't buy a lot before surgery because your taste and tolerance might change. I've used unjury and Premium chocolate shakes, and for me, both are very hard to take. They have a very strong whey taste and smell and they are very sweet.I discovered GENEPRO Protein from theses board and that's all I use now. You can find it at Amazon.com and the company websit a Muscleglen Research. It is odorless, tasteless, and can be mixed in hot liquids and most anything. Best of luck on your surgery! Carol

Unflavored Isopure protein powder sprinkled on everything, especially stirred in my yogurt. No flavor and no grot, stir it in well and you won't even know it's there. Big help in increasing protein intake. ????
