    Biker question

It is massive! i have lost 75lbs. That is modest by some standards, but 1/3 of my pre-bypass body weight. Two things re riding: On my Royal Enfield, max capacity 170kg, my partner and I can both go on it together, but before we were combined a bit heavy! On my Triumph Bonneville, which we use for longer trips with my wife pillion, it used to cause her pain in the tendons at the top of her thighs. Now - not at all. She worked out - she needn’t spread her legs so far apart to get her knees either side of my backside!!! Generally - I am fitter, stronger, healthier. I am walking uphill, climbing stairs, lifting weights a bit - I feel the difference as I fling the bike around.....
  2. Hi all I started my 6 months pre op diet on the 1st of this month so I am looking at having the gastric bypass in or around March time I think all being well is anybody able to explain the whole process please on what should happen from now and my surgery please? And also if any one is able to give me any advice or helping tips for the stage I'm at would also be very very helpful I am currently weighing in at 19 stone and feel so miserable so really hoping all goes well for me on this chance to being slim & healthy. Thanks in advance to anyone kind enough to leave me a reply xx
  3. I've recently started adding bananas to my protein drinks because quite frankly, I was getting sick of them and getting nauseus (sp?) when I drank them. I told a friend of mine who had the Gastric Bypass and you would have thought I told her I was putting 5 lbs of plain sugar. She was just in shock that I would do such a thing! Am I doing something wrong? I told myself that it was because we had 2 different surgeries, and that's what made her react the way she did. I thought I'd ask the experts here on the board. Thank you!

    HELP!! Lap Band OR RNY

Hi, I'm sorry but I have to respectfully disagree that one must eat only "healthy" foods with the band. I myself do eat smaller portions of what I was eating before, which was a varied diet of healthy and some "unhealthy" foods and I have lost nearly two pounds a week for the last six months for a total of 45 pounds down. Of course bandsters can't gorge on ice cream and milkshakes and chocolate all day long and still lose weight, but I enjoy all foods and do not eliminate any food at all. I eat pizza, hot dogs, chips, fries, everything. I also eat fish, whole grains, vegetables, Beans, and fruits. Everything I eat is in a very small portion and I don't second guess what I eat, only how much. Everyone is different but for me, I don't eliminate anything. The only thing I would say is if you eat huge amounts of ice cream or chocolate or other soft sweets (mousse, cheesecake, etc) and you don't think you can ever stop, then the band is not for you. It's really easy to drink milkshakes or eat a 1,200-calorie piece of cheesecake (yes, Cheesecake Factory cheesecake contains an average of 1,000-1,200 calories per slice!!!) with the band. That being said, I have still enjoyed ice cream and dessert in limited amounts since I got my band but I'm able to limit it because my sugar craving post-surgery is greatly reduced. As for band vs. bypass, I agree with all the other reasons listed such as adjustability, less hanging skin, greatly reduced death rate during surgery (1 in 2,500 as opposed to 1 in 100 for GB), no malabsorbtion, no need for supplements the rest of your life, etc.
  5. Sounds like the malabsorption could help. Right after my surgery I wondered if I should have given more consideration to bypass.

BCBS of TX - 5 years proof

I'm from Texas and have BCBS of Texas. The only preexisting condition I have is Thyroid condition. They approved me the first go around with me only documenting on a form that Dr. Kim provided.. Listing the different weight loss programs and diets that I have tried with dates and durations (not exact). No doctor documentation at all. Where in Texas do you live and who is your doctor. My lapband Doc (Dr.KiM) handlied all the paperwork and knew all the hoops needed to be jumped through. I started my process in November of 09 and will have my surgery tomorrow. I was afraid they would not apporve me because of no preexisting conditions like yourself. Normallly they want you to have the problems you mentioned that you have. I think I was approved because of Dr.Kims office knew exactly how to document and gives the insurance company the required paperwork for them to approve. Good Luck!
  7. I had rny gastric bypass and am wondering if I can have a revision surgery done.
  8. Hello everyone. Today I am 9 days post of from lap roux n y. However 18 months ago I had gastric sleeve. I struggled with weight loss after about 40 pounds. After trying everything to loose weight, one year out the dr and I decided that it was time to discuss doing the surgery again. I tried for 4 month to get insurance to pay for a resleeve and they denied it Everytime. So as june approached I told the doc to try to get bypass approved. It was. I had my bypass on June 28. I am still really sore, tired, and in WAY more pain than I was with the sleeve. I never joined a forum or read on one after sleeve. I also never really had a support group. This time I'm doing it different. This time I will succeed and hit my goal weight. :-)

    Band Over Bypass?

Gaining the weight back with bypass? Is that possible? Can you get the lap band if you get the bypass? Her insurance must be paying out the A$$! Lol Sent from my iPhone using LapBandTalk

    Band Over Bypass?

I'm choosing the LB because you can always have it removed, but you can't put your cutout stomach back. I do know if you're diabetic bypass cures it instantly, so that's why some people go that route.
  11. I have the Bariatric Advantage brand Protein shakes now- bought from their website, also you will need Multivitamins and skim fat free milk makes the shakes easier to tolerate. Otherwise it's real thin and hard to drink all the time. I prefer the Isopure zero carb Protein Shakes though and intend to go back on those afterwards. It's better as far as carbs and fat and stuff goes and I liked the taste a tad better. Bout the same price too. I also recommend V-8 and soy milk. Oh and I have this cookbook which I used and pureed the food during my mushy stage: Eating Well After Weight Loss Surgery, Patt Levine M.D., Book - Barnes & Noble I thought the recipes were tasty though I've only made a few of them so far- and they tell you how much to puree for the lapband or for gastric bypass etc. I have a Blender Bottle and use it every day! It's so easy to make the protein shakes with and is easy to just rinse out real quick afterwards and let drip dry- rather than a blender or spoon to stir with. Otherwise, nothing else comes to mind. Congratulations by the way!
  12. Am considering lapband or gastric bypass, hopefully with a surgery date of 12/17. Am almost into senior status. Have some serious health issues including diabetes, hoping to avoid others, and have an acceptable quality of life as I move into retirement. While I accept that there will be some pretty drastic changes once the surgery is done, and am doing my best to prepare, am still very curious about post op diet etc., and how to deal with everyday things, such as preparing meals for family, dealing with social gatherings, etc., in the post op phase.

Could someone please help me find a Dr in winston-Salen NC that does this surgery and a good one. And how is this vs gastric bypass. Please help. Sincerely, Donna (melovebeachs@alltel.net)
  14. For one thing it's a fairly new surgery. So some surgeons tend to be more conservative and mirror their recommendations based on how they treat bypass patients. Additionally there has to be some variation based on the needs of the patient, and their medical history. For example, I am a vegetarian so the recommendations my nutritionist outlines for me may be slightly different than what someone who eats meat, fish or poultry.
  15. I went for my first fill yesterday, had my surgery August 5, but he put the needle in twice ( painful) and he decided I was still too sore? Made my appointment to come back November for first fill. I have nothing in band, and I am staying hungry! I don't want to gain the 24 pounds I have lost back...........
  16. DELETE THIS ACCOUNT!

Went for 1st fill, but dr. tried twice to find port...no fill

I have to be honest, that makes zero sense. What is the logic in waiting until November? If I were you, I'd be insisting in s much sooner fill and answers. Good luck.

    Intro / questions (long)

One question I would ask your surgeon since you are an athlete is about nutrition post-surgery. My understanding of a difference between bypass and sleeve is a difference in nutrient absorption. Best of luck with your decision and thank you for your service!

    Considering Mexico...

I would not hesitate to go to Mexico for surgery. I am also a self-pay patient. I decided to stay in Illinois and pay the much higher price simply because of the availability of family members. But I have frequently used health services abroad to save money and have been very pleased. I have read frequent positive reviews of surgeons in Mexico. I would suggest taking someone with you for the surgery - for support during recovery. I wish you great success in your weight-loss journey (I am on the same journey and will have my surgery in the US in October or November).

    Liquid

I'm ending day 2 of 14. Looking towards the light at the end of the tunnel. I'm only allowed liquids. I'm drinking Premier Protein for bfk and dinner and broth with genpro for lunch. My doctor directed me to stay within 400-600 cal and 70 grams of protein. I'm drinking 80-100 ounces of Water. As stated above the sugar free popsicles have been a nice addition. I lost 3 1/2 lbs after the first day. I've always been told the first 10lbs is water weight and it comes off quickly. My surgery date is November 22nd. I'm excited and impatient. GERD

I am 69 and have a bmi of 35 with 2 morbidities but after my Bravo test, they said only the bypass would be available to because I have Gerd. Don't want that at all. I know I have a sliding hiatal hernia and I thought it could be fixed at the time of vsg surgery. Anyone get have gerd AND the sleeve successfully? Anyone lnow a good sleeve surgeon in NYC?
  21. I wish I would of had the bypass instead of sleeve, like you I had mild Gerd before surgery but now after the surgery I am taking two different medications cause my gerds/ heartburn got worst. Some patients it went away after losing weight so I thought that would be me cause I felt the same way you did not wanting to go with a risky surgery go with the safe one.
  22. Any updates? I had the sleeve and in 7 months I've lost 142 lbs. So I would like to compare that to your bypass. I've head that you lose more with bypass. Congrats!Congratulations on your success!!! Sorry, I own a hair salon, so from October to beginning of January, life is crazy crazy busy. So I've not been on here in awhile... I'm down 150lbs in 7 months.. Weight loss has slowed way down, but I'm not complaining.. I'm finally in the 100's now, 198 as of yesterday.. I wish you continued success.. ImageUploadedByBariatricPal1454071356.487491.jpg Congrats! Those pictures are awesome. My weight loss slowed and stopped, mainly because I got addicted to nuts and Peanut Butter. However, I'm back on track and loosing 1-2 lbs a day now. Lost 156 lbs in less than 9 months and should be in my 100s in a few weeks. I'm crossing my fingers I will be at goal by my 1 year anniversary. Keep us updated! What amazing progress, keep up the good work!!!! Yeah those nuts will get ya lol... Same happened to me!!!! I'm not even obsessing about a goal weight anymore. I'm so close to what I thought I wanted, but am very happy with where I'm at now. I think my goal weight might be a little to thin for my frame. Words I never thought I'd say lol. I'll just have to go with the flow... Keep up the good work and definitely post pictures soon.. That's if you wanna of course lol
  23. Any updates? I had the sleeve and in 7 months I've lost 142 lbs. So I would like to compare that to your bypass. I've head that you lose more with bypass. Congrats!
  24. Wow, what a nightmare! I'm so sorry things have been so awful for you! But I agree with @@mentalistfan that you should definitely get a second opinion before you go under the knife again. Travel if you have to. Converting to bypass is a major undertaking, and you should see if you have other options first. Best of luck and keep us posted!

    Medication

@@Sammie16 Hi there! I am 16 months post op bypass and have had a lot of positive health changes after losing 141lbs. I am less than 5lbs from my ideal weight and for the first time since I was a teen I am a normal BMI. Bypass resolved diabetes, apnea, anemia, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, severe Gerd and stage 3 kidney disease. I am very very glad I had this surgery. It also resolved severe pains in my feet, ankles and knees. Unfortunately I have severe osteo arthritis which impacts my spine and I have psoriatic arthritis which impacts many other joints in my body. Before bypass I had 4 back surgeries including a lower lumbar fusion. I was really hoping losing all this weight would improve my back. For me that has not happened but I don't believe it has anything to do with having bypass. I believe my disease and age, I waited to long is why I still have severe back issues as well as other joints. In June, I had a 3 level cervical fusion because I had severe stenosis and spinal cord flattening. In November we went in and removed a neurostimulator I had implanted for nerve pain in my lower lumbar. We had hoped that this would resolve severe thoracic pain I have been experiencing for the last year. It didn't. I have been in pt for several months and Tuesday we do an MRI to find out what is happening. For years I was pain medication free. In November I could not take the pain any longer and have been taking Vicodin daily. I know that if I still weighed 310lbs my back would be in a much worse situation and there are many on here who have had a lot of pain relief in their backs. I believe because mine is related to severe osteoarthritis of the spine, no amount of weight loss can resolve that damage. I don't know what your situation is but I share my story to help enlighten others not to wait too long to get the weight off their bodies. Once the damage is done there is no turning back. I wish you the very best of luck and hope that your WLS resolves some or all of your pain.
