I was banded on the December 28th at Harper Hospital in Detroit with Dr Weiner. I got there on the 27th and they set me and my hubby at their International Housing. It was and old dorm that they turned into housing. It was old but clean. We decided to go to the movies that night to get my mind off of the surgery. I had never had surgery before so I was very scared. We got to the hospital at 530 am and had all preops done then. My surgery was scheduled for 730 am and it was on time. When I got into the OR I started crying because I was so scared. I almost backed out but I figured I came this far why stop now. All went well with the surgery. I stayed overnight and I was nauteous for most of the first day and I even vomited but they gave me meds to help. We went home (drove 5 hours) the next day without complications. I will say that I was very tired to start out the trip and just felt miserable. About halfway home my husband talked me into a popsicle that was not sugarfree. I felt so much better after I ate that. I think my sugars were low or something. I am home now. I slept like a baby last night thanks to the liquid vicodin they gave me. I feel a lot better today. I truly recommend Dr. Weiner and Harper Hospital. they were so attentive. It is a teaching hospital so I had lots of residence come to check on me. So far so good, thank you Jesus!! Scrappy friend, I was scared out of my mind about the surgery too. You know what my doctor told me? He said that the band is not a life threatening procedure but gastric bypass definately has life threatening complications. He told me that there are only a couple of things that could go wrong and they are easily fixed and not life threatening. He also reminded me that if I continued on my path of morbid obesity that I would be facing a lot of possible life threatening illnesses anyway which we all know is true. I can tell you I was still scared the day of the surgery and thought "what in the hell am I doing?" when they were putting the IV in my arm. I can also tell you that 10 months later I am down 3 pant sizes, I look better, I feel better, I am not so hard on myself anymore, and I have no regrets! I do believe that the band is not for everyone because you are making a decision to have your eating habits forever altered but I was ready for that. I also pray I have escaped diabetes now. Focus on what your life will be like if you continue on your current course with no intervention. I wish the best for you!

Okay, so the "reason" that the sleeve will work - beyond the portion control - is because of the insulin resistance issue going away. I had not heard this, but it makes some sense although I don't understand the reasons that a smaller stomach causes this. I have had fasting blood sugar of just under 100 for many many years - borderline. My A1C was in the pre diabetes range. The first bloodwork post surgery at 3 months showed a tremendous drop - my fastiing blood sugar was more like 77. I thought it was due to my dietary changes only, but I NEVER saw that drop when i was doing weight watchers and lost quite a bit of weight. Maybe there is something about the sleeve that helps with the insulin issue. I guess I would still be skeptical, BUT, what I do know is that for many of us it only takes eating a little bit more then we should to keep the weight on. Maybe the shift in insulin response is enough to help? So, although I am a sleeve advocate, I am not sure about the strategy of planning another revision if it doesn't work. Ask your surgeon, but I thought that each successive WLS increases risk of serious complications. If I didn't believe in the sleeve, I would go straight for the RNY or more like the DS (although THAT is a scary procedure!).

If I had it to do over again, I wouldn't choose lap band OR RNY bypass, but would choose DS or VBG instead. You get better weight loss with the last two and less complications. Perhaps you should look into all of the bariatric surgery options to help decide which is best for you.

Newbie here, Hello all ! Could use any support please =)
RoseNewLife replied to RoseNewLife's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hello Donna! Thanks so much for the positive feedback, I need to hear these success stories (I know the risks and complications, lol). I'm so happy to hear you are pleased with this, congrats on the weight loss so far! -
I can't answer all your questions because I wasn't in the green zone yet but as I've heard from you on other post and you know I've just had gallbladder surgery I had 2cc's removed week before last, ate like I still had my normal fill. I had to stay in the hospital overnight due to complications and I'm assuming the IV made me gain but I gained 3 lbs which I'm a half lb away from losing it all again, woohoo, I'm not eating any more food than before and not hungry any more than before. I go back on the 20th for a fill, I'm sure he will only put in 1cc at a time, knowing my surgeon. Good luck on your procedure, prayers for you. Donna

DrewzWife posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi everyone I'm officially crossed over to post-op. I had my surgery on Tuesday August 25th and I am doing absolutely great. I have no nausea, no vomiting and gas is mild. I also thank God that I didn't experience any complications Any other August 25th Sleevers out there? If so let me know how you all are doing! -
New here. Been reading these boards for the last few weeks, my first time posting. I am scheduled for surgery at 8:30 am tomorrow morning, 12/27. Getting nervous! Excited for what this means for my life, mostly nervous about having actual surgery and complications. But it’s taken me two years to get to this point and there is no turning back now. Sit have to have faith that everything is going to be fine.

Want Honest Immediate Post Surgery Opinions
anniew replied to ShannonK's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had my surgery on 4/4/2012. So let me start by saying EVERYONE IS UNIQUE. Right after surgery I was out of it on morphine and slept most of the time. The next day was bad. I was in pain and nausea set in because of the morphine. I had to do the swallow test and that was pretty bad too. All those feelings were the next day after surgery. That evening I felt much better watched TV in my hospital room and the nausea went away. The next day I felt even better now that I was off the morphine the nausea was gone and I had some apple juice. I ended up staying 2 nights before going home. No complications. Now about the pain, feels like I did some serious stomach exercise. First week energy wise... I took 2 hour naps EVERYDAY I had a friend stay with me that first week and on day 9 we went out to SAMs club and walked around for an hour and a half! I was so tired on the way back home I swore I was going right to bed for a nap but when I got home I felt so full of energy it surprised me. My friend went home that weekend and I started feeling better. By day 14 I was out and Around, cooking And going up and down stairs. If your hubby will be with you for the first week you will be fine. Don't do anything for a week except for drink your protien and water and nap. In 2 weeks you will turn that corner and feel great. I am about 3 months out now. I feel normal like nothing happened. I am down a little over 50LBS this weekend I crosses over to regular misses sizes and I have so much energy! Good luck to you and I wish you a quick recovery. -
Unless you have complications there is no reason you *need* to follow up with a bariatric surgeon. I don't know anyone who had surgery in Mexico who does. The standard advice I have seen is to see your PCP at 2 months, 6 months, and 12 months post-op. Have your regular blood and urine tests as well as vitamin and mineral levels checked. Weight and blood pressure checked and recorded. The lab work, without insurance, is what may kill you cost-wise. You may need to do some serious shopping around for that, but it's important. As far as food goes, I'm not much help as I tend to focus on eating for nutrition rather than to stave off boredom. I really don't care if I eat the same things over and over again, so I don't ever really think about "new ideas" for food. That said, here's mostly what I ate during weight loss phase: breakfast: chicken or beef roll-ups in romaine lettuce (with pickle relish, hot mustard, etc.) lunch: chopped chicken breast with green veggies and a little light salad dressing dinner: poached egg on refried beans, tuna salad bake, lamb chops, steamed curried scallops, steamed cayenne pepper shrimp, chicken breast baked in yogurt, turkey-spinach-goat cheese burger patty, sardines in mustard. Good luck!

I got the lap band surgery about 6 months ago. Up til now, I've had absolutely no complications, not even vomiting. But last night at dinner, I took a bite of a sandwich that was too big and it got stuck in my pouch. I ran to the bathroom and vomited it up, and there was some blood in my vomit. Is this a serious problem or is this normal? Thanks for the help.

I'm New with questions
Betsyjane replied to christellini's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Sins. Oh brother. Morbid Obesity is so complicated.....and people generally aren't ready to give up bigotry and try to understand. It's so easy to blame the victim. I guess I really don't understand it completely, and I have it, so I don't know how others would get the concept. When our own governemnt contemplates putting warning labels on plus size clothing, you know there's alot of ignorance around. (The clothing folks must not have as good a lobby as the junk food people.) -
Anyone switch insurance companies after the band???
PalmTrees posted a topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Hi all. I am scheduled for lap band surgery on May 21st. I have Aetna and it is covered by insurance. Apparently fills aren't but the dr's office said they have ways of getting around that. My question is- I'm looking for a new job this summer and I'm concerned about getting new health coverage and not be covered in case of a band slip, revision, complications or future fills. Any advice? Thanks in advance... -
Hi: Going to far away, can bring complications with the fills after surgery. Many doctors will not take on the after care of another surgeon. Many GPs, don't like to do the fills so unless you are prepared to fly back to wherever you had the surgery check it out carefully. So if you get stuck, you have the the upleasant choice of going to ER where the snarky doctors and nurses tell you that it serves you right for having a band done privately. If you want my outright advice stay in Canda close to home. Speaking from experience. Doddie

HI everyone, I am wondering if I should go to the states- (closer) or make the trip to Toronto, that would be 4 hours away. I am most worried about any complications or follow ups? Has anyone done this long disance? Thanks for any and all help.

I Can't Make Up My Mind! Sleeve Or Band :-/
mrsski21 replied to Jlewis229's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had the Sleeve 6 days ago and I am so HAPPY that I did!! I had no complications and I am able to drink and eat "mushy" food fine. My uncle had the band and he gets sick ALL the time. THey either fill it too much or not enough. I have lost 8 lbs in 7 days. I started at 296 and now down to 276. I lost some before surgery. Good luck!! -
What to tell nosy people?
gowalking replied to Amp1504's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I never met him and like you, I never met the other surgeon's either. I'm happy with her and have had no issues or complications. I haven't needed any fills so I don't know how that goes..I don't even know if the doctor does them or if someone else does them. -
I chose the sleeve because the band is no longer being performed on military bases due to the high rate of complications. Bypass was an option, but the malabsorption caused me concern.

Feeling bad about my pre-op diet
isaviolinist replied to starryeyed's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thats great that you are very clear on your preop and postop instructions however you should keep in mind that every physician basically has a different preop and post op plan. For example, my preop diet was 3 weeks (yours is 2) and I was having 3-4 slimfasts a day with a few other things like broth and sugarfree applesauce, sugarfree fatfree pudding, etc. I lost 20 pounds on my preop diet, and there were no complications during surgery (so it must've worked!). My postop was 6 weeks (as opposed to your 2 weeks) with 3-5 days clear liquid, 2 weeks full liquids, 2 weeks pureed/liquids, 2 weeks mushy foods. I also have had no complications since surgery, so this diet must've worked as well. Many folks do not even have a preop diet. And its not to say that any one diet (pre and post op) is right or wrong, but every surgeon has their individual plan based on their own experience. -

Surgery 4/10/18 HW: 295 CW: 252 Slow start out of the gate. Surgery was complicated by adhesions from band and I was overmedicated recovery unit. Been on solid foods for a few weeks. I have to be careful with bread, but I don't eat a lot of it anyway. I do OK on my plan, but have had a few episodes of uncomfortable slime/foamies. Sometimes I can figure out the cause, sometimes I can't. Discovered last week that traveling can be a challenge, but I do the best I can. My weight loss is going much slower than I'd like. I'm told that it's because of my previous bariatric surgery/lap band. Guess the body has "been there/done that" kind of attitude. Happy I'm losing inches. Am down 2 pant sizes. Glad my energy is back. Started off on MD Patches, but developed sensitivity to the adhesive. Don't like the chalky chewables and the soft-chews are kind of expensive. I can take small pills, but the larger vitamin size caplets can be uncomfortable. Currently taking SF gummy supplements, which seem to work and I consider them my treat for the day. My skin is looking great. Not much hair loss. I notice a little extra in my brush, otherwise I seem to have that in check.

Feeling anxiety about surgery
dragonflylover replied to a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am living proof..amongst a trillion other people.. haha. i had my surgery on 11/23.. I woke up fine from anesthesia. of course i was drugged up on morphine.. but it wasn't bad AT ALL.. the recovery goes rather quick. anxiety is normal. your preparing your body for fight or flight. just take deep breaths and keep reminding yourself why you did it. feel free to ask any question and good luck on your journeys. i suggest asking your surgeon the statistics of complications. it's nice to hear zero... -
Gina- sending warm wishes to you from Florida.☀️ I am 3 weeks out & now have infection where they removed my drain. Praying there won't be complications. I hope you get the support you need! Luckily I had my gallbladder out last year. It was a quick and easy surgery & made me feel so much better. It helped relieve abdominal cramping and pain. I complain about paying deductibles but can't imagine how you have to cope with National health care. If we all send good thoughts and wishes hopefully you will get the help that you need! Just know- you are not alone. We all feel your pain. Keep the faith Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Any exception to 6 month waiting period?
VDLT replied to kelliev2015's topic in Insurance & Financing
I didnt have a waiting period because I was a conversion with complications. I was going to go the self pay route if not but so glad it was covered. Not only for the money saved for the surgery itself but what if I had any complications or problems? I was worried those would not be covered if I went self pay and they happened. Honestly if you only have 4 more months to go, it will go so fast and it wont matter a year or so from now. I understand wanting it now but honestly, it won't matter down the road... -
Hi, Does anyone know if there is a way to get your insurance to cover your fills? I live in NC and I am planning on going to CO for surgery. I was wondering if anyone self-paid for surgery, but was able to get fills covered.......What is the best way to find out if I can? Should I call the insurance company (UHC) and just ask? Or should I contact the doctor's office first for information? I have contacted a lot of doctors around here about fills and they are all really expensive. I considered flying back and forth to CO, which may be cheaper than get the fills done here. I just think this may get complicated. What it I was overfilled and I had already gone home? I would still end up going to someone local. The best rates that I have found here are $500 for the initial visit and $1,000 for the year or $500 for the initial visit and $300 for each fill....The $1,500 for the 1st yr may be the best option, depending on how many times I think I might have to go for fills. I am just really frustrated and trying to figure out a way to get this done. I am not worried about playing for the surgery, but the aftercare is really adding up. And then I went to my general dr on Thursday and when I was there I asked her whether or not they would be able to take out my stitches there. She basically avoided my question & asked me what kind of surgeon would be ok w/not providing aftercare to their patient. I explained that he does provide aftercare, but I hadn't decided it I was going to do that or just find a dr here. I can't fly back there just to have stitches taken out. Sorry to ramble.....I would really appreciate any info you all can provide. Thanks!!
