Themis, Wow thanks for that perspective. I've never thought of it that way. Just because you get the band doesn't mean that the weight just falls off, it takes a lot of work and self control. I really want to get off my meds and be healthy and not have to sleep with that darn ole sleep apnea machine. I love the way it makes me fall asleep and sleep restfully, I just hate the looks of it on me. Anyway, thank you and I wish you much success.

I woke up this morning and I'm heavier than I was last month at weigh in like .5lb...I'm so mad at myself and on the verge of crying cause I think I just screwed myself!! Did anyone gain during the 6month weightloss period and if so did you end up getting approved or denied?
-
Ok so all the weight gain and loss is that from everyone's 1st "official" weigh in or month to month? I haven't gained from my 1st "official" weighing just from the month before weight Ok I wweigh 312.8 at the visit with my surgeon (1st weigh in) and now I'm 308 last month I was 309.5 but my scale was showing 310 so that was up from last month's weight not the "overall weight" does that make sense? I worry, that's what I do and o talked to my ins UMR and they said there is "no guidlines" whatever that means so I guess all is ok and we shall see in about 2 months. Did anyone keep a book?
J.Diesel replied to Fit2btied's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I started an excel workbook. Tab 1: 1) track weight loss per month versus my forecasted goal 2) track weight loss per week versus my forecasted goal 3) track BMI and current BMI ratings 4) track chest, arm and waist measurements per month versus my forecated goals 5) I chart via a contol charts to see if I'm loosing to much or gaining weight, so I can change what I eat to prevent any additional shifts. I'm a 6-sigma Black Belt geek. Tab 2: 1) track my clothing size per month versus my forecasted goals Whatever method you use, make sure you like tracking via that method or you might stop tracking. -
I weigh 185 pounds and have been yo-yo dieting for years and I am now contemplating on the possibility of the lap-band surgery. I only need to lose 40-45 pounds but I just can't seem to be able to do it on my own. I have been able to lose a lot of weight in the past but only to gain them back much faster in the end. Am I crazy to be thinking about surgery. Please advise!!!

Surgery Valentine's Day 2/14/2013
sleevegirl830 replied to Sunshine39's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I am only 6 weeks post op...so I really remember that feeling: excited AND nervous! This surgery is the best thing I've ever done. I have done EVERY diet and gained and lost the same 20 lbs for the past 20 years. My surgery went really well...and I healed very quickly. Some of the things I did (not necessarily on my surgeon's list...but I did them anyway!) I drank organic aloe vera juice 24 hrs post op and continued for 30 days. It's VERY healing. If you buy the EXPENSIVE brand, which is George's (available at health food stores) it tastes just like water. I also started taking arnica immediately after surgery. Great for healing and not bruising! It's difficult to get your water in, but it's very important. I couldn't handle the broth (yuk) but I ate sugar free jello and popsicles that were fruit...with no sugar added. It was good to get my first meal 10 days post op!! Now, even if I try a bite of something I'm not supposed to have....I know how limited I am for space in my new small stomach, so I can't try much more than a bite of any forbidden food!! I'm eating breakfast: either an egg, or a protein shake, or a half skinned apple with peanut butter. I LOVE soup for lunch and I make a chicken tortilla soup with lots and lots of beans and some salsa and spices (great protein) and for dinner I usually have fish, or chicken or turkey with a little cooked veggies. In between, I'll have a small amount of protein shake or some peeled fruit. My clothes are getting baggy....which I love. My only worry is because I'm in my 60's I'm already noticing some extra facial wrinkles and sags I've lost 39 lbs in 6 weeks (no required loss pre-op). Good luck to you....I know it will go well! -

Umm...i could use some help...I had my surgery over 2 years ago...for the first two years, i lost about 80 pounds...i "thought" i was doing good. But i was sick, my band wasnt placed right, adn i was throwing up every day...it took that long and a switch to a new doc to get it fixed, back in november. since then i have gained 30 pounds...i am trying so hard...i am so tired of thinking about exercising, eating, every tiny tiny thing i eat. I am terrified that i am going to wake up and weigh 300 pounds tomorrow. I cant go back there....i am exhausted and drained. I know others have been though this...and gotten back on teh wagon..i could use some help.....thank you so much in advance.

New senior member just saying Hi
SassySenior replied to SassySenior's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi, Thanks for posting! I'm 95% sure I'll be getting the band. Now my biggest decision is what doc. The one I picked is fabulous but I don't like his support staff, especially the PA, who will be doing the fills. I definitely don't want to have to interact with her ever again, much less very often. Congrats on your weight loss! It's hard work, but definitely work it. I've been dropping pounds consistently since I began my own serious effort to lose weight. Dropped 21 lbs. so far in the past 60 days, 12 "officially" in the past 30 days on my medically supervised diet. I have a lot of info on Protein Drinks, in fact 73 recipes. Lemme know if you want. Hi Everybody, just been looking over this site, and was quite impressed. I am a little curious about this surgery, as I was banded in the past. I had the lap-band put in, and had it for almost 2 years with no weight loss (except 20 lbs from the beginning-with liquids) No matter how much or little saline was in my band, it was either too much or too little. It was a very frustrating time for me. I threw up just about every meal, and could only eat soft foods. meat or pototo would come back up, as soon as I ate them. Its been almost two years since I had it removed, and never regretted it. But I'm also looking for help again. I am living in Alberta, and I'm also taking part in Weight management seminars. I'm hoping one day to discuss this option in more dept. Please let me know how you got started, where your doctor is from and if it was covered under insurance. The Lap-band cost me $ 15000.00..ouch... Thanks M

Another Hurdle Overcome!!!
n2animals replied to n2animals's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
@ helen098 I completely agree with you about insurance. I just saw the bill that the Surgery center submitted to my insurance company for the sleep studies, endoscopy, nutritional counseling, etc. The prices they are charging I could have had the surgery 2-3 times by now. It is ridiculous to go through all these hoops that cost more money than the procedure alone. I hope this gets approved the first time, I really dont want to deal with the appeals process and wait any longer. I am already dying waiting for my 6 months to end. I would have put the 6lbs on with weights, heavy clothes, tennis shoes etc in order to get the approval! Have you been approved yet? -

I am considering lap band surgery. I am 4'11 and weigh 175 lbs. That puts my bmi at 35. I have been overweight my ENTIRE life and think it is finally time I do something about it. Over the past 6 months I have gained 20 lbs. It seems that I lose a little dieting and then once I stop I gain it all back and then some. The most I seem to lose at any giving time is about 15 lbs never any more. I have tried almost everything out there. Weight Watchers to Medifast and everything in between. I am tired of spending all this money on failed attempts to lose weight. These last 20 lbs that I have put on has started to affect my quality of life. I am a mother of 2 and hardly have the energy to keep up with them. My body hurts ALL the time and seems to get worse with each passing day.

I guess my question is, is the lap band right for me? I have taken the first step towards being banded and that seemed to be the hardest step ever. I called my pcm and received the referal to go see general surgery. The hardest part for me was admitting I was obese and need drastic measures to get myself healthy.

I just wanted a few different opinions before going all the way with this. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Lurker Saying Hello
hakunamatata_ca replied to Abbie-pie's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Good luck to you! What is the 6mth diet for? What does it tell them? If you loose weight will they say - Oh you can do it yourself? I don't understand why they do that. I know pre-op why they do but ?? It will be a couple yrs for me in Ontario so I will likely go with self pay in awhile and get a loan to pay over 5 yrs or so. Worth it to me. I want a life back now not in 2 or 3 yrs. Keep us posted  -
YOU ROCK LADY! So glad to hear you are doing so well. Isn't this awesome! It is finally really happening--I am losing the weight and for the first time in my life I am certain that I will be successful!

Trying for a 2nd band...
katwmn63 replied to help_us_lisa's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
if anything, i would think that you are living breathing proof that the band works for you!!! surely your records will show that, and that you were a much "healthier" weight with it than without it. i would think your chances are even better now if you have the same stats as when you qualified before. i do hope this turns out to be the case! best of luck!! -
Hi fellow Bandsters! Thought i would join the site to share my experience. Im from Edmonton Alberta Canada, and have always been the fat kid. When I was 14 I weighed 245lbs and worked my way up to 265lbs by the time I was 17. I joined Weight Watchers and hit 210lbs by the time High school was over. Over the next ten years it was a roller coaster! When I went to college at 25 I got a little silly with the drinkin and by the time i graduated i was back up to 270lbs (have to admit it was alot of fun!).By the time I was 30 I hit the 300lbs mark. I keep tryin diets like Jenny Craig and am succefull, but i seem to drop 20 then a few months later gain 30.I now have a job in Sales, which i get paid to take customers out for food and drink. Im now 34 years old and have hit 349lbs! Im not even the same person anymore and I really miss the old me! I loved to socalize and travel the world (Australia, Cambodia, US, ect...). I never had a problem meeting women and could fit in with any group in a short amount of time. Now I just want to curl up in a dark cave and see no one!I could really care less if I wake up in the morning anymore. I had to turn the mirror around in my room so I dont have to disgust myself anymore. I cant live like this any longer! I have researched many options but found that the Lapband will work best for me. Im one of those people that never eat breakfast but will eat a truck when dinner comes around. I need this tool to help me with portion size more than anything. Unfortunately our Alberta Health Care system is a joke. Due to the fact that i am healthy as can be (aside the weight)it will take 2-3 years before i can have the surgery here in Edmonton. I have decided to go to Mexico to see Dr.Horacio Guajardo (worked for many years with Dr.Rumbaut) in Monterrey Mexico on July 14th 2009. He has personally called me to asure everything. Lisa and Brigitte (the Canadain and US patient relations) have been very no extremely helpfull. I have spent over 4hrs on the phone talking with Lisa for the past several weeks goin over every little detail. Sorry for the novel here, but i cant wait to start my journey here is 2 days! Look forward to all of your information. Cheers Kevw

For those experiencing a stall........
nagaraj posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
One of the reasons I joined this forum in Dec '09 after my VSG was to understand all about stalls and how to break them (live with them !). After almost 6 months I have realized that stalls are inevitable, they way they react is unpredictable but finally breakable. My longest stall was 9 weeks, not only was it a stall, I had actually gained weight. To all friends who come here to seek answers on stall - you will win ! There are many NSVs also, I am fully off diabetes medication, sleep well (no snoring), walk and run 4 miles a day, trouser size down from 55 to 38, shirt from 46 to 42. The best decision I ever made was to go for VSG. Keep the spirits high. The wonderful people of this forum helped me remain sane when confusion prevailed. Thank you all. -
Hello all. I have had an obesity problem all my life - as does everyone in my family. Four members of my family have the band including myself. I also know several people with the band. I am the worst example out of them all. I was banded almost 3 years ago and have only lost 27lbs (267 to 240). I have struggled to work off every bit of that. I have been 240lbs for months now. I have a bowflex, free weights and an elliptical. I exercise 2-4 times a week. I feel as if I am cursed. I have had 3 fills. I went in for another fill today, but I could not get the white Fluid down (stuff you drink for x-ray). The Doctor had to take it out and said I had to make do with what I had in me already. I have joined this site today to seek advice on losing weight. I would really like to get down to 199, but I would be very happy at 210.

Psychological Testing
Murphysraven replied to KristenLee's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My evaluation was good. Along with making sure I really know what I am getting into with the surgery we talked about other aspects I might run into when losing weight. The dangers of addiction transfer and how my relationship with people might change along with my relationship with food. We even discussed how to handle questions about my weight loss and how to approach negative opinions from people who might not understand (if I decided to tell them I had WLS). The only tough part of the eval was the questions about my background. Issues from my past that I though I was totally over came to light and I was surprised how much they still effected me. I was advised that it might be good to get additional counselling in that regard to help me overcome those negative feelings. -
Wow ....I am so looking forward to being at that weight. How does it feel?
-
rita, I started my six months lifestyle meetings before meeting with the surgeon for the first time. Also...the office isn't going to send anything in to the insurance for approval until after you finish the six month lifestyle meetings. Which means that there might be pre-existing conditions that will be determined through all of the testing. For example, Arthritis PCOS Insulin Resistance Acid Reflux High Blood Pressure High Cholesteral Back Pain Knee Pain sleep Apnea Asthma These are things that you should discuss with your general practioner as well. If any of these comorbidies have been discuss and documented with him/her then that qualifies. I would begin the classes and start getting them out of the way...do you first weigh in with weights and heavy heavy clothes as well.
-
Rita, I hate to tell you but, depending on your insurance, you may end up waiting an additional 6 months to have the lapband...if your insurance requires 6 months of documentation that you followed an approved diet plan. If your insurance doesn't require it, you are one of the very lucky ones! I am also borderline but I have chosen to be a self-pay. That way, I can have my surgery asap without having to jump through the insurance hoops or without having to gain an additional 10 pounds. I just have to attend the seminar and have my consultation...and hope the doctor will decide to do surgery.

My journey seems out of sink?
BLERDgirl replied to athena3127's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Don't compare yourself with anyone else. Some people have dramatic weight loses and some do a gradual, slow, but steady weight loss. It's barely been 2 weeks. Relax. Your doctor will tell you if you are doing something wrong. -
Hello, everyone. My name is Diane, I am a relative newbie to this site, just found it the end of January and been reading your posts ever since. I guess you could consider me a senior sleever as I am 56 years old or maybe I should say 56 years young. LOLS! I was the chubbiest baby of all my siblings and remained very chubby most of my childhood. Even though I was very active in sports, and I loved swimming I was just always a very chubby child. I have lost significant amounts of weight many, many times thoughout my life but just manage to put it back on plus more to boot. But the weight has finally gotten the better of me I was diagnosed with osteoarthritis which causes my feet, knees and joints to hurt to the point where I walk like a very old person. So I decided enough is enough and I am gonna give hit the weight loss circuit one last time. Only this time I am going to make sure I can keep it off for good!! I reserched about the lapband but have decided on the gastric sleeve because I believe this is the one for me. I have completed the 6 month scheduled Dr. visits and jumped all the necessary hoops required to get this surgery done. Hooray!! My surgery is scheduled for Feb. 14th by Dr. Kemmerling, at BayCare Hospital in Green Bay , WI. My pre-op appt. was Jan. 24th, had bloodwork, chest xrays, and EKG, if everything turns out okay with that I am good to go, I am just okay at this computer stuff so I don't know how to get the ticker thingy, tried but didn't work - so I will just list my pre-op weight as 228# and I am 5' 6 1/2" tall. If anyone is a senior sleever I would be interested to hear your progress and find out if you are happy with your results. Maybe we can chat about our progress on this new journery in our lives. I will try to keep you posted as often as I can. Thanks all! Hope to be chatting with you all again soon.
