At 4 weeks I was just starting soft food. I could do Soups and long as everything was mushy in it, mashed potatoes, soft fish like tilapia, canned tuna, Pasta, etc. I think you could easily find something soft and mushy in a restaurant. You will not be eating very much. Protein shakes are going to be a must. You could get a shaker and some powder when you get there or get some ready to drink while on the go. Have fun in New York. I just went on vacation there for the first time in June and absolutely loved it!

I have actually had a few things in the last few days that I did enjoy! I think it was just a transitional thing and maybe some food boredom. I have been enjoying my workouts quite a bit, which is great! Good luck on Thursday!! Try and remember your first night home from the hospital is the worst and you will not feel great....but I PROMISE each day after surgery (once you are home) will get a little better....each morning you wake up will be a little better than the morning before. Sip SLOWLY. Don't worry about your energy, your body is still technically getting all the calories it needs each day, it is taking the calories it needs from the fat you have been "storing" all these years!! I am putting protein in each day not for calories but so that my body will take the extra calories from my fat and not take protein from my muscle. We want our bodies to attack the fat. The most important thing after surgery is to get your fluids in, you have plenty of "fuel" (calories). You DO NOT want to dehydrate, drink, drink, drink. I wish you the best of luck, you will not regret this at all!!

Weight Lost Before Surgery
Bufflehead replied to tlh4life's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I lost about 70 lbs in the year before surgery by going high protein/low carb and faithfully logging my food intake in myfitnesspal. -
Thank you for the suggestions, I will try them out and see. I know I have to get my protein in but I have a hard time with the thickness of the shakes as I am not a big shake drinker to begin with.

Another option may be to rent one. Depending on the severity of your OSA you may see a rapid improvement after surgery and not need the machine for all that long.

I was sleeved 15 months ago, and I experienced some hair loss - not visible patches, but I could tell it was lots thinner. I've always gotten my 60 + grams of protein and I've always taken biotin along with a multivitamin. About 3-4 months ago, I noticed a lot of new hair growth in the areas that were thin. Now I have new hairs sprouting up all over my head - sometimes my part looks like a porcupine!!! So it does get better!!

I take Biotin every day. Working constantly on the Protein. Thanks for the tips. I truly appreciate it! Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N910A using the BariatricPal App

Another Protein Drink ?
Aileen-March 2014 Sleeved replied to Lisa00's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have ordered the unjury Protein shakes from their website. http://www.unjury.com/store/protein?tag=BP The chocolate is very good, and the vanilla and chicken broth too. The strawberry was too sweet for me. They are good quality drinks that are powder form. My surgeon recommended powder only. Best of Luck -
Hubby Kudos and 1st protein shake
Djmohr replied to dhrguru's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I too am a premier Protein chocolate fan. It is the only Protein Drink I can tolerate.the chocolate is fabulous, the vanilla too sweet for me. But then again, I no longer touch sweets they actually don't taste good to me at all. Thank goodness because before surgery I had the worst sweet tooth ever! Now it does not bother me if someone has dessert at all. -
I can hold everything down, water, protein shakes, broth, disgusting vile medication makes me gag a little. The pain is so localized to that one area. Doc not his NP seem to be concerned at all and keep reminding me it's just part of the process and my body just needs to heal... I thought it would be at least a little better by now but boy I was so wrong. It hurts something awful. I've been told here that it's normal and one day il wake up and the pain will just be gone and I don't get that! For now I am holding on to hopes that day will soon come so I can go on with my life pain free and really start the weight loss journey. My mind is so clouded mentally and physically wearing on me trying to come with this pain. :/

Right there with you, mine was on the 2nd, and I am dragging!! Still can't get in all my protein

Is My Protein Drink Ok To Have?
Lilcat replied to LorenaVaca's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Sounds like a good one to use...I was instructed to get at least 60 grams of protein a day, 30 grams protein max per serving and no more than 5 grams of sugar per serving... -
Getting Sleeved this Thursday, May 23rd
mirrim58 replied to mirrim58's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'm two days out and just got out of the hospital. I'm feeling pretty good. It's a challenge to get the Water and Protein shake in, but I'm just sipping as often as I can. Luckily they were able to do the surgery laparascopically, so I'm not as sore as I would have been with an open incision. I'm looking forward to actually sleeping tonight instead of being woken up every hour or so at the hospital. I did put on a couple pounds - others have said it's due to the constant IV hydration in the hospital. I have been spending some time walking, it helps with the gas and aches and pains. Did 33 laps around the hospital floor yesterday. Today I'm just walking around the block. My house is small so if I want to walk it must be outside. I was really lucky that I didn't have nausea after surgery. I'm just trying to learn how much I should have with my sleeve. So far I just take a sip or 2 then wait 10 or 15 minutes and do it again. Best of luck to you for your May 31st surgery! -
I am just over 3 mths out and feel like I have had more weeks of stalls than not. However, I have lost 52 lbs. It can be frustrating but when the scale moves down again it is so exciting. Haha. A couple of things - your body doesn't know the difference from pre surgery or post surgery weightloss, your body has to heal and adjust to these drastic changes, and your body is going to take care of itself. You just need to do your part with meeting Protein and liquid goals. No longer are we dieting. We have a new lifestyle. Changing our mindsets helps. Taking it day by day helps. Focusing on the long term goal helps.

Today was day one of the preop diet
Hunee B replied to dancinglamb's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Hey This is the end of day 2 on liquids. It's really not bad that bad, I was expecting the worst. I have to have at least 80mg Protein each day and less than 50 calories. Suprisingly, I haven't been as hungry. My surgery date is April 16th. Stay encouraged and good luck! -
Hi, yesterday was my first day and I lost 6 lbs (yah). but I had muscle cramps in the caves and feet all night. Anyone else have this?

3 months out - some things I learned
New Me 2015 posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi Everyone! First some background- I started my journey with my first pre-op appt in sept 2014. I was 221lbs and 5'2". Had to do 6 months with nutrition for my insurance company. I lost 20 lbs in those 6 months and insurance approved my surgery. I was sleeved on 3/16/15 and surgery day weight was 201. On my 3 month surgiversary I weighed in at 156 lbs. I never took my measurements but wish I had. I went from wearing size 18/20 pants to wearing a size 10. Shirts were size 2X now down to a large shirt is wearable and a medium is better but slightly snug. I don't go crazy with exercise. I figured it wasn't sustainable for me. I try to at least workout 3x/week either I walk 2 miles at a quick pace or I do 30-45 min at the gym alternating cardio and strength training. I knew I could keep up a plan of doing that everyday. I'm happy if I get it in 2X/week and if I do 3 that's a plus! It was definitely hard at the beginning no being on liquids and the puréed foods. I started a journal at the beginning and it helped when I was feeling low to go back and read how far I had come. It does get better. Being on unrestrictive food is wonderful. Don't get me wrong there are sometimes especially during dinner I wish I could eat more. Especially if it's a really yummy meal. I pushed my sleeve to the limit twice and it wasn't a pleasant experience. I felt horrible. Felt like I was going to throw up, got feeling I wanted to Pass out and got hot and sweaty. It lasted for about 30 min and rest of night just felt horrible. I ignored my sleeve when it told me enough food. I start to hiccup when my sleeve says no more food and I normally stop when I start hiccuping. But I have to say those 2 times were enough. I stop when my sleeve says stop. I have been eating out at restaurants again but make good choices and always have them bring me a small plate and I put what I can eat on the small plate and have them bring me a box to put my leftovers in so they aren't tempting to me. Then I have them the next day and sometimes the day after that. I still have a protein drink and 1/2 of a protein bar a day to help get in my protein. I have learned that I can have a few carbs and not feel guilty. I have a biscuit sometimes it a whole one sometimes it's a half. But I don't eat all 6 like I used to. I can eat 1/2 of a cupcake if I'm at a birthday celebration and that's enough. I don't need to eat 4 or 5 of them that half is just enough to make me feel normal. I guess what I learned with carbs is don't beat yourself up. Someone told me it's a tool to help you be the best you can be. I am actually loving being able to go out to social situations and to participate in choosing food that makes me feel good. Not food that after I eat I feel guilty like I did before surgery. I don't do it all the time or everyday like I used to but it's great to know I can occasionally if I choose to. I will be fine, my sleeve is fine. I feel better than I ever have. I had been over 200lbs for about 20+ years. I know it's tough at the beginning but it will get better. Keep on focusing on goals that are for your best interest and health. You have to be able to sustain these for the rest of your healthy active lifestyle. I have some more weight to loose as I'm only 3 months out. They tell me 111lbs is my ideal weight. I personally think that's way to low for me. I think 120-125 will be best for me. I know that everyone is different and I'm just saying what I have experienced and what is working for me. Your experience maybe different. No 2 people are the same. Here's wishing you and me a successful And healthy journey!! -
HUH???? Band date set for March and I have soooooooo many questions!
WendyMary replied to Biglilmama75's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi, I'm newly banded (3 weeks post op) and understand you being overwhelmed. I'll try to answer some of the questions I can. The sweet spot is the perfect amount of fill and its different for every person. Some say it took 3 fills to get to the perfect amount of fill so that you feel good restriction and loose weight consistantly, others take many more fills to get there it just depends on you. Some people deal with many fills and then too much fill and then have to have some taken out to get to that sweet spot. I haven't had my first fill yet, so I'm far from my sweet spot. Everyone seems to be different as to what they can eat after being filled good. A lot of people say they have trouble with most bread products. Right now, I'm at the point where I haven't had a fill and I can eat anything and my appetite is still pretty big. Right after surgery I was on a 2 week liquid Protein diet and the first week, I wasn't hungry at all and had trouble drinkng all of my shakes, then I started getting my appetite back and now its as if I didn't have surgery, but that is totally normal. I'm healing right now and there is no saline in my band. In another 2 weeks, I will go in and get my first fill (hopefully) and then start to feel some restriction. As of the last week, I stoped loosing weight, but my eating hasn't been the best either and I'm going to get back into exercise again. Going back to work. I had to attend my grandmother's funeral 3 days after surgery and I posted a lot on this board because I was overcome with what to do. Well, 72 hours post op, I felt good (taking pain meds) and went to funeral, but was a little uncomfortable with bloating and gas, but nothing untolerable. If you work at a desk job, you might be ok, but if you were able to take a week off, you would be much more comfortable going back to work and you want to make sure you get plenty of rest and you might want you paint meds still and they make you sleepy. A lot of people don't even take the pain meds and feel great, but if it's possible for you to take a week of vacation, I think you will be glad you did. I'm terrified of the stomach flu and am going to ask my Dr. about that when I see him. I have two young kids at home and they come home sick all the time. My youngest just had the stomach flu two days ago and I was freaking out. I washed my hands constantly and was careful not to drink out of the same glass, etc and I think I avoided it. Sorry this is so long. Hope it helps. I only told my parents, brother and husband. I'm not going to tell anyone else. I've been able to be around people and no one has a clue as to what I did. The first day of surgery I was walking around fine and if someone had poped over the house, no one would be none the wiser. I told friends from the school I had the flu and 3 days later was at a funeral and no one knew. Best of luck to you! About being too filled, obviously I havn't experienced that and hope I don't, but I guess you have trouble getting things down and everything seems to get stuck, but after a fill, some people's stomachs are a little swollen and it could take a few days to be sure how the fill really is. Thats what I hear. -

I was so busy closing on a new house I forgot to have my food funeral. Then the day we moved was the day I started my preop diet. I sure could have used a pizza that night, but I had a protein shake instead. But after surgery, it really didn't matter.

I feel hopeless!
Inner Surfer Girl replied to lsubabe33's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It sounds like you are doing great. Are you tracking your food? What are you eating? Are you getting in all of your Protein and fluids? Are you avoiding starches, added sugars , and fried foods? Are you taking your Vitamins and supplements? Are you exercising? Have you talked to your NUT lately about your concerns? Without more information it is hard to offer suggestions. -
Post Op day 6, Protein, Water, Stomach pains?
newme31 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi so I'm post op day 6 and yesterday my dr said I can start having my slim fast protein shakes again. So I drank about a quater of it and knew that was enough....but i'm still getting that crappy feeling whenever I drink something....this will pass right?? PLEASE tell me this will pass...get it sometimes even when i drink water I hate it..... Anyone else having this problem?? -
I have found that if I do 3 days of just Protein shakes it really helps get my restriction back. After that, I try to do one day a week with just Protein Shakes to keep my restriction tight. Not for everyone, but it works for me. That might be a way to kickstart yourself. Good luck to you and congratulations!
