How Quickly Things Change!
UTGal99 replied to mezanne1401's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was considering the lap band too and then was introduced to the sleeve. I have officially been sleeved now for 4 weeks and can honestly say it is THE.BEST.THING I have ever done for myself. I am down 23 pounds in 27 days! With the sleeve there is no foreign object in your body like with a band. And no re-routing of intestines with the bypass. In my opinion it is a far more superior procedure than any of the other bariatric surgeries. I was up and walking within 3 hours of my surgery, never any nauseau or vomiting and have always been able to tolerate every food I have reintroduced. I can eat about 4-6 ozs. in a sitting and drink plenty of fluids. Good Luck to each of you! This site is amazing and the support I have received is fabulous! -
Dreaming About Surgery
FDclerical replied to lillatinmomie's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
ill be sleeved on TUESDAY nov 6th and a while back i actually had a dream that my dad told me not to get the surgery done by my surgeon and that he just doesnt trust him. which is crazy because my bff's mom just got a bypass done by him a few months ago and she is healthy and looks AMAZING! i am very superstitious and look into my dreams ALL the time. i called my dad and we talked about it and i feel confident in my decision to go with him. but i do over analyze everything and i think i was just over thinking things that night. i havent had any other surgery related dreams lol just extremely anxious and excited at this point -
The rny is the full gastric bypass. Roux en y, I think it's spelled. My doc wanted me to do the sleeve or bypass but I wanted to least invasive so picked Lapband. Also felt better that it can be removed. And if Lapband for some reason wasn't effective, my insurance would let me go for the sleeve or rny in 2 years anyway

Beginning My Pre-Op Journey & The Nutritionist Suggests Herbal Life?
blackcadillacs5 replied to Onamissionn2013's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Wow. First of all...great job. You seem like you have done your research and are mentally prepared (which is the most important!) Forget what the dietitian/nutritionist said about herbal life. If you really want to follow this to the T then I suggest you seek another opinion. My dietitian gave me a meal plan for a person having a bypass, and said it was the same thing. Totally different, I threw the paper as soon as I got outta that place. Your mind and heart are on the right place, everything else will fall into place. Congrats on making the first steps to your new you and journey. If you have any questions feel free to message me. -
Emergency Band Removal Should I Do Sleeve
FDclerical replied to insanejane's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi Jane! There is a section on here band to sleeve revision I changed my mind half way through as well because of the fills etc. Also a friend has it and u really can't tell she has gained a lot back. I wish u best if luck in ur decision but I feel the sleeve is better than bypass if u were. Considering that. The band scares me LOL I think if u visit the topic and read people's experienced u will feel more confident in ur decision. Sent from my Samsung Admire using VST -
I had revision almost 3 months ago and just recently moved to more dense protein. I run, cycle, and train a lot. Pre op sleeve I had lost 100 lbs with my lap band. Had complications and started my revision at 168. I now weigh anywhere between 134 and 138. I feel like I eat all day and I'm hungry all day. I average 800-1100 calories a day with 80-100 g of protein and low carbs. If I eat too late, when I wake up, I feel a stretching sensation/pain in my stomach. Does anyone feel this way? Does anyone feel like they eat all day? My portions are appropriate as I'm eating 2-4 oz at a time. I'm feeling lost, hungry, and like I just eat all the time. Please share your insights! Also I made the popcorn mistake by eating too mucch felt nasty and got rid of all popcorn in my house.

Anyone know if you can file for short term disability in California for the time your recovering from surgery? My husband is planning on getting bypass done in a few months but doesn't qualify for vacation or sick time.

Just thought I would post these really delicious Protein bars and if anyone else has favourites they recommend please tell us them. I use Protein Bars as a Meal Replacement several times a week if I am on the run or somewhere there is no good food choices to pick from. I only like them if they are really tasty and it satisfies my chocolate craving because they are solid they also keep me feeling full for a long time. My favourite so far is an energy bar called "six star body fuel" that has 15 g of protein. I love the double chocolate chip flavoured one that has a real brownie cake taste. It tastes best when you unwrap it and microwave on high for 10 seconds. It costs about $1.67 at the Real Superstores and at 45 grams it has only 170 calories. My next fave Protein Bar is "PowerBar triple threat", the Chocolate Caramel fusion flavour. It has 225 calories and 10 g of protein and is 53 grams. It sells for about $1.99 each at the Real Superstore. Donna VBG/87 Revised By Dr. Cobourn to Lapband/06 251/164/125 goal

I am a former bander too. I lost 65 lbs with band then stalled out after 6 months. At a little over a year I had dilation and edg showed my band had slipped. I revised to sleeve May 30 and am down 40 more pounds. Sent from my iPhone using VST -

^^^ explains the differences between the sleeve & plication. plication is an unknown, experimental procedure that folds the stomach.. it can cause scarring, ulcers, and other stuff & if you have complications, they don't know if they can fix it or switch it over to a different surgery (like the sleeve or bypass). it also sounds really painful, because the doctor said that the stomach can get so inflamed that it rips itself open from the sitches which requires another surgery. i'd rather have the sleeve.. the sleeve also helps with dealing with physical hunger. hope that helped. but to answer your question.. you're not crazy to want help with your weight problem.. but i don't think that you're very big.. you could eat healthy- which you would have to do if you got surgery anyway- and exercise.. and your problem would be taken care of.. but there are people who have this surgery that are 200lb.. i mean.. i dunno your specific situation, but if i weighed 200lb, i would be pretty happy & look forward to exercising to get the rest of it off & not having to worry about excess skin & stuff.... but you know what they say.. different strokes for different folks. one thing you may consider, instead of surgery, would be going to mexico, canada or europe & having that gastric balloon thing put in your stomach.. http://www.obesitysurgerycentre.com/procedures-right-for-you/gastric-balloon/ << there's info on that procedure. what they do is put a silicone balloon in your stomach & fill it with saline or air & it makes your stomach small, like if you were to have had a gastric bypass or sleeve.. it's fully reversable, too.. only down side that i've read is that it can only stay in your stomach for 6 months.. but.. you could be to your goal by then & it'd be easier to maintain your weight... so something to consider! good luck to you, whatever you decide to do!

IDK anything on plication but I had read some things on it that were not 'great.' I honestly don't recall what. I did sleeve as I am and was a huge eater. I use food for more things than hunger and I still struggle with that. I'm a work in progress. I wasn't "huge" as most ppl would say "omg you don't need surgery!" but they didn't know how I ate. They didn't know that food really felt like it controlled me. I hate to say that, it sounds pathetic, but I am an addict. It's the only "drug of choice" that you can't 'just quit'... and every day is always going to be something to work at. This tool helps me work it. I didn't do RNY (gastric bypass) as I didn't want to reroute my plumbing and to be honest dumping scares me. I love sweets, or loved them prior to my sleeve, and I was scared I'd do that once and get dumping and want to die. I am the 1% of sleevers that have had complications. I have had pneumonia after my surgery then a leak and revision to my suture line. It was not the most enjoyable experience; however, I don't regret the surgery - most days! I am 90 lbs and counting lost since March. I worry on the long term 'will I be successful' because surgery is a tool, not a magic wand that will 'fix' you. Depression, eating for solace, etc are issues that having this surgery will NOT fix. However, this surgery has made it possible where I go out to eat and after 4 or 5 bites, I am "done" and satisfied. I can eat 700-900 calories a day and be ok with it, where I used to balk at that extreme makeovers show that put everyone on a 1200 calorie restriction diet. Do your research, decide what is best for you. Should you want to know more about sleeve, this is obviously the place to be. But research your options. I do think DO IT! (whatever surgery you decide, especially if you have struggled with weight for your lifetime as I have) I am 38 and I hope that I will be successful for the remainder of whatever my lifetime might be so that diabetes, cancer, heart disease - all of which have killed my family - won't get me. But remember... I AM still a "work in progress"..... it's a tool and every day I still have to push myself to make good choices and not beat myself up when I slip. Part of this journey, for me, is about forgiving myself for things.... I am trying to work on my head issues. Support groups with this surgery has helped! (you might attend a few of whatever surgery you are considering for face to face input as well) Best wishes!

Have you been taking the Pantoprazole specifically for reflux for the past 20 years or for another reason? Did you discuss this with your surgeon pre-op? I was under the impression that most people who already have reflux will get it worse after being sleeved (except where it was being caused only by hiatial hernia which would be fixed during surgery),with most surgeons recommending bypass instead for people with reflux? Reflux is quite common in the first few months post surgery (hence standard issue of PPI post surgery). Hopefully some of the foods were just too soon for your stomach and dialing back on the solids/meats for a bit longer brings relief. (I too was on a fairly fast moving plan, with 2 weeks liquids, then 2 weeks of both purees AND soft solids, and I'm finding I still prefer mostly my soups and decaf coffee + protein supplements. I have had twice now some very soft cooked chicken (5 hours slow cooked sous vide hot water bath 165F) which seems to agree with me fine, and some mashed avocado.

5.5 weeks post lapband to gastric bypass
m.simpson88 posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hello everyone, I had surgery on 7/16 and was fine up until week 3.5 to week 4. I wasn’t able to get my water in or food down without throwing up. So I called my surgeons office and went it. Where my lapband was had become extremely tight and was not allowing anything to go through. So I was scheduled to go in the next morning which was last Thursday to have an EGD with a ballon stretch in the area where the issue was. I now can eat about 6oz of food before I feel satiety. I am worried it was over stretched. I am not losing any weight. I am very concerned I am eating to much. It is low fat and low carb meals and of course protein first. I am still adhering to the no drinking with meals and waiting to eat 30 minutes after drinking and waiting to drink 30 minutes after eating. I am just looking for input and opinions on what I should do. -
Thank you to all who have written me back. This has really helped. I also have been going to a support group here in town and one of the women I met had had revision from band to sleeve. She was quite happy with it. Now to just choose a Dr. Deb

I might be the only person that struggles with guilt but I've been thinking about this. I've only just had my first NUT visit sao im just getting started, but I haven't told anyone I'm even considering it except my husband and one really close friend who is also considering it. I've already decided to only tell my mom and dad before surgery (which I'm nervous bout becAuse they'll think I shouldn't. My mom had bypass but she was much heavier than I am). Anyway sorry to ramble but i am nervous about who to tell at work because i have to tell my boss something and after the surgery I am nervous about ppl asking. I would like to say I'm on a very strict dr supervised diet and leave it at that but I will feel guilty like I am lying. Technically it wouldn't be a lie but still deceiving. Anyone struggle with guilt like that or am I being my usual over analytical self?

Struggling With Guilt
Jessica9190 replied to Jessica9190's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It makes me feel better to know I'm not the only one struggling with this. I remember thinking selfish things when my mom lost so much weight from gastric bypass. She had been 300+ for over 20 years and when she started losing it was like she became a different person than how she was my whole life. I remember one particular time she was losing quite well and I was in one of my gaining times feeling really down on myself and she said to me "ha ha ha I'm nearly to what u weigh". Looking back I know she had just met a goal in her own mind of weighing what I did but in my mind I felt her accomplishment was my failure. I felt horrible that day an Thot to myself " yeah we'll we cant all go spend 20 grand and have surgery some of actually have to work". I know now and even knew then that she was having to work hard. I was just hurt and jealous because as i was getting fatter she was getting slimmer Here I am now the one wanting to have surgery. I only hope she can support me. The last time I was on a losing streak she was clear to let me know how I was not doing the healthy thing by bouncing back n forth all the time. It was like she had lost and become the "thinner" one and she didn't want me taking it from her. I want to stop the jealousy cycle and just be happy for both of us to be healthier and live longer. I just struggle with guilt for thinking wrong before -
Yes he wants me to do bypass

Anyone here had to get pre-authorization for removal of the band, without any further revision? Mine is causing problems (serious pouch dilation) to the point the surgeon wants to remove it ASAP, but it's being submitted for pre-authorization. If you had to go this route (as opposed to ER sudden removal, etc.), did you have any trouble getting it approved?
-
I know exactly what you mean, I don't want to get "the look" so I've thought about it myself. I think the best thing for me to do is to go ahead and tell the truth and to hell with whatever negative thing they think about me. But with that said, if you feel too uncomfortable telling the truth, just tell them what you HAVE done. You HAVE exercised more and you HAVE eaten less. They don't have to know about the band on your stomach. Most people don't understand how the band works anyway and think it's like bypass, and as we all here know it's nothing like it. It's a tool and we have to use it. You have worked hard so don't let anyone make you feel like you don't deserve to feel good about yourself because you do!

I have been banded for over 7 years at this point. It seems that things change so much with the band. At least with mine. MOMENT OF TRUTH! I am not the poster child for lap band. I have lost and gained at least a bazillion pounds in that time. I was 210 at my lowest. I stay round 275 these days. Well it's time to kick it into gear, one last chance before searching out info for a revision. For sure I am the tightest in the morning. If I drink a cup of coffee or tea, I loosen up enough to take my pills. After that I can barley get anything through. Lately I have been sipping Water or SF lemonade letting the sip go all the way. Sometimes I time myself and only take a sip if the time is an even number. lunch has been small lately, but for years I'd fight and fight to get anything down. Usually regurgitating several times a meal. sometimes end up vomiting. By dinner I am able to eat a half a side of beef... My life is in no way a regular life. I drive truck and start between 3-4am, work way too many hours, eat on the go, get little sleep, and the stress level is out of sight due to the cargo I carry. I'm getting pretty tired of not being my ideal weight, so here we go again. I'm not sure if I'm asking a question here, or if I just curious of what others deal with. Feel free to tell me how your band acts from day to day. Thanks for taking the time to read this post!

I went into the office to pay my program fee and receive orders for pre-op testing. My doctor then asked me why I won't consider bypass surgery instead and people don't usually lose but 50lbs with the band. Has this happened to anyone else? I'm not considering bypass but I'm curious to know if anyone else's doctor recommended bypass instead lap band. Thanks J right

I revised to the sleeve. Before I had the band in 2008, I had horrible reflux!! During band surgery , the surgeon told me I had a hiatal hernia which he repaired and reflux was gone. In my 5th year with the band I started getting a throbbing in my chest - after X-rays etc. I had reflux again so he removed some of my saline and I felt fine again but was already gaining my weight back. I was sleeved 2/4 - he repaired another hiatal hernia during surgery but this time I was getting reflux after the surgery. I bought an over the counter antacid, took it every night before bedtime and I was fine. Only did it for the first month. Now I only need it occasionally.
