On one of my many self-devised diets, years before VSG surgery, I fasted for 8 days straight. Only had water and non-caloric beverages. To my amazement, I lost ZERO pounds!! When my weight loss had slowed down (post-VSG) my nutritionist usually increases my daily calories. We should be eating 4-5 times a day. I’m rambling, I know, but I think we are often instructed to eat too few calories, and I believe, especially in the year post- op, we definitely should not be on OMAD or IF. Just sayin…. -

Today's lunch...though its past 4pm so maybe its an early dinner? Anyoo, sat myself on the couch in front of the TV to do some binge watching and dig into this ginormous salad that I made cuz I was STARVING (one of those busy-forgot-to-eat days): 351 calories. Ate about 2/3 of it. Rest went back in the fridge for later. -

My clinic has not had a dietitian/nutritionist on staff for months now (part of the Great Resignation, I guess). So they've been contracting with people, and I finally had had enough of it. She asked what I have been eating. I track religiously, down to the teaspoon of mustard (which probably isn't necessary, but...). So I told her. It came to about 850 calories. She absolutely lost her mind, whipped out a booklet, and told me I'm to be eating no more than 1/3 cup of food five times a day. I pointed out that I run or work out literally every day, that I am going back to a pretty physical outdoor job, that I'm losing weight steadily, and that eating this amount gives me the energy I need. I asked how I was supposed to get the protein goal the surgeon gave me (80-100 g a day) on that little food, and she told me to stop being difficult, that I was obviously going to just gain it all back (lol, on 850 cal a day, lol lol lol), that too much sodium would spike my blood pressure and heart rate (lol, it was 114/74 during intake with a resting heart rate of 54), etc., etc. So I fired her. At the top of my lungs. Which meant that a bunch of other people came running and there was kind of a scene. I don't care. I asked a friend who's had VSG who she uses for a NUT and she recommended her folks, so I signed up there and will be given macros to meet by someone who has experience with athletes who've undergone bariatric surgery. I'm not going to be wedged into a one-size-fits-all kind of thing because she's reading from some Nth-generation copy of some manual. -

I'm horrified that the surgeon is telling you one meal a day. You mention that you manage 1-2 oz of food a day. There is no way that is enough especially if you are also exercising! Are you also drinking protein shakes? In contrast, I just had my 2 month check in, and my nutritionist is telling me to increase my calories especially because I want to restart with my trainer this week. She also wants me to start weaning off the shakes (though not necessarily the protein powder). I already eat 3-4 times a day (small meals) plus a protein shake, and to make the new calorie goal I'm going to have to add another snack and try to increase calorie count at each meal. If his practice doesn't have a nutritionist, perhaps you can see about switching to a new practice that does and using one of their nutritionists? You want someone who is experienced with bariatric patients and not all nutritionists are. Also, depending on your state there may or may not be licensing for nutritionists, so make sure they are credentialed. -

I am 4 months out and just had an appointment with the surgeon last week. He suggested eating one meal a day in order to keep my blood sugar from spiking in my body. He stated that my body has enough stored fat and if I follow Intermittent Fasting/OMAD I will lose weight faster. This is in complete opposition to the nutritionists that work in his own office. If I eat just one meal a day at this point there is NO WAY I'd be able to meet my protein goals and my calorie intake would be miniscule. So, I am actually going to ignore my surgeons suggestion on this. I am going to keep eating according to the nutritionists well thought out plan and lose the weight when I lose the weight. Stick to what your comfortable with.... remember, losing weight is not a race. -

Sour patch kids crinkle cookies, chocolate Reese’s cookies, mint chocolate chip cookies, double chocolate espresso espresso biscotti, mini vanilla cupcakes (I’ll top with buttercream before work), and I tried my hand at royal icing on top of pumpkin shaped sugar cookies… definitely need to practice with the royal icing. … I did end up eating the small ends from the biscotti, a sour patch cookie (holy sour sweet!), and an unfrosted sugar cookie but still only ended up eating around 1500 calories with the cookies and meals I ate yesterday. -
I was sleeved on 5/24/21 and have lost 70 lbs. I still have at least 70 more to lose. The past two weeks I haven’t lost anything and my appetite has been ferocious! I’m meeting my protein goals of 80+grams, but find myself creeping up toward 1200+ calories a day, even when my surgeon and nutritionist recommended 800-1000. I’m not feeling as much restriction and find myself getting hungrier, especially as the day progresses and in the evening. I’m terrified that my body had met its “set point” or my sleeve has stopped working or stretched out. What gives? Please help this newbie out and tell me it will get better!

I know logically 2 pounds a week is great! And I know that a few “extra” calories a day isn’t going to make me gain back 70 pounds overnight. But some days I’m just not feeling logical. 🤷🏻♀️ -

I've never felt so seen. Seriously. Despite all the evidence to the contrary, I find myself convinced I'm going to, I don't know, eat an extra 200 calories and suddenly be back in the Big and Fat Men's store. I am trying to find someone to help me navigate this. Add to this that even though I am thrilled by the weight loss, it does come with its own annoyances. [CENSORED], I wanted to wear this particular outfit and it looks like a tent on me! Ugh, will this skin resolve on its own? For fox sake, will I ever be able to shop anywhere but the Goodwill and Ross Dress For Less? (I'm cheap—I don't want to buy clothes I'll only wear for a month or two unless they're seconds.) -
It's been a roller coaster the past two days! 😀 They scheduled my surgery for Nov 24th, and then called back the next day saying that it will be denied by insurance if I can't provide better proof of my 3 month medically supervised diet. I have been on a diet, medication and seeing my endocrinologist regularly for 3 years. I've lost 35 lbs total, 10 in the last couple months. The coordinator said that a letter from my doctor would be sufficient and I wouldn't need to do another diet. But now seems like whatever my doctor wrote isn't good enough. She hadn't given me calorie goals and instead we focused on the plate diet, limiting starchy carbs, filling it up with vegetables, lean meats and really really really reducing portion sizes. Also a lot of the focus was on blood sugar control since I'm on an insulin pump. My doctor just sent more notes from my office visits, and now I'm waiting to hear back on if I can still have the surgery as scheduled. So we'll see if I have to do some 1200 calorie diet again and have the surgery pushed out until next year or not. Fingers crossed!

Are you making sure you're meeting your protein and hydration goals? My surgeon didn't give me calorie goals, just protein goals...and to up my protein intake if I'm working out. Also, I notice that I lose less quickly when I'm working out. I think because perhaps fat is being replaced with muscle. Have you tried doing measurements instead? I too wonder what my maintenance calories are because never in my life have I reached that stage. I am quite short so any sort of weight gain is always apparent , so dont really wanna gain 10 pounds extra down the line when Ive reached my weight goal.... -

There's absolutely no way 600-700 calories wouldn't lead to loss in an adult. Stalls happen! You might want—this is such perverse logic but it works for some people—to increase your calories by 100-150 just for a week. It won't be enough to put you anywhere near maintenance, but it might break the stall. I broke my 3-week stall with the help of a dietitian by adding 100 calories of carbohydrate. To @CtotheTina - the 3-week-stall is legendary around here. It happens to most people and there are almost 20,000 posts on this site alone about it. It's your body getting used to the new normal and doing some fluid rebalancing. It will break within a week or two, just keep following your program. -

i have never learned how to reply to specific posts, but I sent CtotheTina21 a PM. Today I begin my 8th week, and i have been in my second stall (since the 3rd week) and have not lost any weight in a week. I'm hoping this period will pass like the third week did, but overall I was hoping to have lost more than 38 lbs (since starting pre-op) by this point. I get my water and protein grams in as assigned, and always maintain the time distance between drinking and eating. So I think I'm following the rules, but am eating between 600-700 calories a day, and wonder if this is too many for my age (64) and activity (I walk or do stationary bike for 30 minutes a day). How many calories are people eating 8 weeks after a gastric sleeve? How much daily exercise? thanks -

I am five weeks and one day post-op and down 41 lbs. from surgery weight, 50 from before the pre-op diet, and 76 from my heaviest. My incisions have all healed except one that looks a little bit herniated. My surgeon said he'd look at it at my six-week appointment on Tuesday, but didn't sound overly concerned since there's no pain. I had a slowdown (not really a stall, just a significant slowdown in weight loss) for two weeks but now appear to be back on the loss rollercoaster. My dietitian told me to start eating small portions of carbohydrates (potatoes, etc.) because apparently my system doesn't function well on protein-only. This has had the added benefit of relieving my constipation, so I no longer need to take docusate. I'm on about 1000 calories a day, which seemed high to me, but the dietitian pointed out that my activity level is more intense than many bariatric patients, PLUS I return to my physical job next week. I am completely off my blood pressure medications and my blood pressure is usually around 125/70 or 125/75. Not high enough for my primary care physician to be concerned, especially since I still have weight to lose. I also am on half the dose of antidepressant I was on (and feel great), and I need to make an appointment with my sleep clinic because I think my CPAP either needs to be dialed way down, or just simply eliminated. I am allowed to return to lifting weights (slowly) next week, so I have been running. I spent the first two weeks just walking, then did short (~100 m) jogs to get my body used to it. I am now on week 3 of Couch-to-5K and my mile time has gone down by almost four minutes since pre-op. I am with you on the mental portions. I have been trying to train myself to be willing to throw away food rather than finish it just to be polite. I am looking for a therapist to help me through this. I am discovering what foods fill me up and what foods "slide" through me. Today I met a friend for coffee and ordered ricotta toast. Ended up with an absolutely enormous slab of sourdough with what had to be 250 grams of ricotta on it. I ate two bites and was done, and am still full two hours later. But if I eat, say, a hamburger patty, it just goes right down. Absolutely zero regrets. I wish I'd done this 10-15 years ago. -

It is normal to be thinking like you are. I think most of us do the same thing. It looks like you lost most of the easy weight before surgery. Many of us lose a bunch in the preop diet and the rest of the easy stuff in the first month post op then it slows down considerably. After my 3 week stall which lasted 2.5 weeks I am back to losing about 4 or 5 pounds a week. I anticipate that slowing down considerably as I pass 2 months post op. I obsess over weight from day to day and I know I shouldn't be looking at it every day but I do anyway. I find if I UNDER EAT then my body holds on to the weight a little more, like I am going into starvation preservation internally. I upped my calorie intake from 750-800 to 850-900 and it seems like the weight is coming off again. I tinker with things when I slow down to see if I can get it going again. The nutritionist is good about giving ideas on what to try. -

Try Walden Farms Amazin' Mayo. Zero Calories. It's runnier and tangy-er than the mayo I'm used to, but tasty. Walden Farms has a vast product line of Zero Calories salad dressings, sauces, syrups, jellies. I usually can't find more than one or two items in the supermarkets near me, so I order them online.

I can't sub Greek yoghurt or skyr for mayo—it just doesn't taste right to me. But I found that Best Foods light mayo (1/3 the calories and much less fat) tastes just as tangy... so much so, that I don't even use all of a tablespoon for a seafood, tuna, chicken, or egg salad.

If I have time in the morning, I eat real food for breakfast - a 1/4 cup of cottage cheese, a soft scrambled egg with a little melted cheese sometimes some salsa, I really like a soft boiled egg with sweet potato mash. (I've been craving eggs lately!) We buy those 2G greek yogurts with only 2 grams of sugar, they're 9 g of protein and taste great. If I don't have time, I make a protein shake with Ripple plant milk (high in protein and calcium, low in fat, calories and sugar) with Bariatric Advantage vanilla powder, a tbsp of peanut butter and about a cup of spinach, blend it up with a little crushed ice - tastes like a milkshake. For a lower fat version, try replacing 1 tbsp of the mayo with greek yogurt and still use .5 tbsp of the mayo. It is a lot less fatty and less calories with very little sacrifice in taste. I use this for egg salad, tuna salad and chicken salad.

Always listen to your doctor, as they will have a better understanding of your specific circumstances than any of us. That being said I was drinking coffee based protein shakes on day 2, real coffee perhaps day 7? Just a guess there but it definitely wasn’t long. I had no negative consequences and drink more coffee now (16 months post op) than I ever have. I find it beneficial to keep my stomach full of zero calorie liquids (coffee and zero calorie soda) as it prevents me from the occasional fridge grazing. -
One thing that's helped me a lot post-surgery (especially at the early stage of recovery) was making a list of substitute very low calorie foods that tasted great and then keeping them stocked in my kitchen so that when I had cravings or just wanted to nibble on something, I could eat a cherry tomato or a few grapes or a cooked veggie, etc. Over time, you'll be able to create your own list of go-to very low calorie foods so if you find yourself struggling, you can at least have a healthy treat. And as others have mentioned, there are lots of substitute activities you can do to calm your mind and take your thoughts away from food. For me, I like to do online jigsaw puzzles and brain training games which keep my mind very occupied.

Sugar free fudgesicles (40 calories each) were my fave dessert post-op. I would usually eat two 😏. I don’t mind artificial sweeteners, but some do.
