How Much Were You Able To Eat Before 1St Fill After Swelling Went Down? I'm Hungry ..freaking Out A Bit!
dks65 replied to 2savemylife's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Whew! I thought I was the only one who was starving! I am about 3 1/2 wks post-op and Im starving!! I do minimum of 2 protein shakes a day, protein water, greek yogurt, broth and of course water, water, water. Wasnt scheduled for my first fill until 9/26, but dont think I can make it that long so they made it for next week. After reading the other responses regarding 'banded hell', I think Im there! And Im scared if I dont get a fill soon Im going to blow this (already lost 17lbs). This is tougher than I thought it was gonna be..but Im in it for the long haul! My health matters to me, and I wanna at least see my grandchildren get married -

I feel for you. I had it once and was hospitalized for five days. As someone said, that IS some nasty sh%!. I get nervous everytime I get an upset stomach and panic when I have to take an antibiotic, so probiotics and yogurt everyday is a ritual for me. -
Greek yogurt does have a lot of protein, and I eat it every day, but it does go right through you. Something like meat sits in your stomach a lot longer, thus keeping you fuller. That's not to say that you shouldn't eat Greek yogurt, but try to get some meat in for some of your meals, too. I've read that there is a limit to how much protein the body can absorb at one time - I can't remember off-hand, but I think it was 30 or 40 grams, but I also recall that there wasn't really a consensus on this. I have to eat 100+ grams a day because I malabsorb protein (my prealbumin level tanks if I don't get that much), but I spread it out throughout the day.

Tomorrow marks one week post op! Purée food ideas?
KarenLoh replied to Whynotnow's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Refried Beans were my favorite thing. I looked forward to them all day and that was my supper. I still like them and eat them once in a while when I don't have anything else prepared. Greek yogurt was a fav too and I still eat that daily. -
Day 11 post OP. My program went straight to soft foods about a week post OP. I tried eggs once and it didn't go down well so I've abstained for now. I went back to liquids fir a few days and now able to tolerate refried beans, cottage cheese, plain yogurt, fish and even chicken breasts. Quantity is the issue, I think about 5 to 6 bites of fish and chicken and I am full. I'm allowed 1/2 cup cooked veggies OR non citrus fruits with my proteins but I've not done much of that yet. I typically pair my fish or chicken with cottage or ricotta cheese or plain yogurt. No starches, grains, sugar or dense carbs allowed for now and I don't miss it. So averaging 60g to 70g of protein daily, less than 10g of net carbs. About 500 cals (on a good day) daily. Went back to work yesterday, dealt with head hunger for a bit because of past routines with food and colleagues but working through it. Gently trying to get 10K steps per day if able. Surgical scars have closed but feel a pinch on the largest incision when I bend too quickly otherwise it's like surgery didn't happen. I choose to weigh weekly so next weigh in is Friday. Prayer is that we all ease into this new lifestyle effortlessly[emoji120][emoji120][emoji120] Sent from my SM-N960U using BariatricPal mobile app

Yogurt question
Navigating the Wilderness replied to char3672's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Protein is the most important thing right now next to water. If the yogurt you listed is truly the only thing you can tolerate right now, then do it just to get some protein in. Just know you should transition to healthier option as soon as possible. -
Mornings I sometimes just have coffee with vanilla protein powder, or 1-2 eggs, or Greek yogurt with protein powder. For lunch I try to take left overs from last nights dinner which is mostly chicken or fish and veggies. I may have thinly sliced turkey and cheese, rolled together. Snacks may be yogurt, cheese, sugar free Popsicles. I admit I am pretty boring and not creative.

Hi everyone, It's been 5 days since I've had my surgery (7/11) and I've been reading these posts religiously each day. I've noticed lately a lot of questions regarding post-op eating plans and I thought I would share what I've been instructed as part of my post-op recovery. Day of surgery and the following day--Clear liquid diet...My diet for these two days consisted of clear broth, Jello, gatorade and Water. I had no appetite and took my time drinking fluids. Full liquid diet for 1 week...my diet this week consists of milk, Protein shakes, thinned or liquid yogurt, jello, pudding, strained Soups, broth. I'm required to eat 50 grams of protein each day, low fat and sugar free/low carbs. One product I fould I like is called Isopure. It's high in protein, low/no carbs and about 150-190 calories depending on flavor. You can buy it at GNC. For my Protein Shakes I drink something called Muscle Milk. I'm also trying to eat only 3 times a day and not include extra liquids like water during or up to an hour to 1 1/2 hrs. after i eat. So far my appetite is non existant but I'm sure that'll change as the days progress. Next is pureed foods for 1 week...I'm actually looking forward to this. Everything I'm suppose to eat is to be blended. Some examples include beef stew, mash potatoes and gravy, blenderized soups, maltomeal or cream of wheat, strained or pureed veggies and fruits. I can supplement my protein intake by adding in protein powders or shakes. Again 50 grams min. protein per day, low carbs and low sugar, 3 meals a day and NO drinking during or up to an hour to 1 1/2 after you eat. After blended foods come mushy/soft foods for 2 weeks. Examples of foods to eat...soups, ground meat (not steak), flaked fish like tuna, eggs scrambled with milk, cottage cheese, yogourt, well cooked veggies. Again 3 meals a day, 50 grams min. protein per day, low carbs and low fat if possible and no drinking during or up to an hour to 1 1/2 hours afterwards. The last two weeks is a regular diet. Again 50 grams min protein/day, 3 meals, low fat and sugar if possible and NO drinking during or up to an hour to 1 1/2 hours afterwards. The main goal the first 6 weeks after surgery is to give your stomach time to heal. If you start eating too much you risk the chance of stretching your new pouch. These 6 weeks should also help reinforce eating habits you'll have to follow to make this process successful. To help with hunger and cravings make sure you eat protein first. Doing so will help minamize hunger and cravings between meals. Also make sure you "layer" your foods when you eat. Protein first followed by starches, carbs, etc. And no drinking during or up to an hour to an 1 1/2 afterwards. Doing so will just wash the food out of the pouch, thru the opening and into the stomach causing you to get hungry sooner. Please keep in mind that nothing is full proof and that you can cheat but if you stick with the plan you should lose weight. Also keep in mind what I've written is what my dr. has told me to do. If others have been told differently than they should follow what they have been told by their drs. Finally I want to say that patience and determination will be rewarded. Each one of us has had many years to program ourselves in the way we eat. Now we have to learn to re-program ourselves. The weight didn't come on overnight nor will it come off overnight. Keep with it because it's our chance for a new beginning. Den

Low Carb or Low Fat...which is better?
elcee replied to amey_idaho's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Difficult choice. It depends on the type of carb or fat as well. All fats have the same cal but certain types of fat are supposedly bad - saturated fats, trans fats whilst others are good. Also low fat products are often as high or higher in calories as the fat that has been removed has been replaced with sugar. One example of this is yogurt.Often the low fat has as many cal as the standard variety. I would far rather eat full fat greek yogurt than the low fat varieties. The greek stuff is thick and satisfying whereas the low fat stuff is watery and leaves you still hungry. Then there is the debate about how foods that have been artificially sweetened can actually make you fatter. I can't remember the science behind this but it has something to do with the insulin response. The best way to go is probably to eat a balanced diet consisting of foods that are as close to their natural state as possible. Choosing lean cuts of meat, removing excess fat and satisfying your sweet tooth with fruit rather than manufactured products. And if it comes down to a choice between butter or marg then eat whichever you prefer the taste of! -
Clear Liquid Diet: Day 1

Difference between Liquid and Purée
Ryan TN replied to wwboy's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
In my case, pureed foods included scrambled eggs, yogurt, refried beans, cottage cheese ????????, but was able to move to moist meats in that phase, tuna fish, beans, boca burgers (yum, love them). Again, just me, if you aren't sure, discuss it with your NUT. -
Difference between Liquid and Purée
RickM replied to wwboy's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It seems like the docs can define things differently (and whether it really makes much of a difference is anybody's guess.) My doc didn't discriminate between liquids, purees, mushes and soft Proteins, but just let us move between them during that first month as our tolerances dictated. It sounds like your interpretation is reasonable, though yogurt isn't usually pourable (except for some of the yogurt drinks.) If in doubt (beyond checking with the doc or nut), you can thin things out a bit with Water or milk, or just see how the thicker consistencies go as they are acceptable on some programs and there is so much overlap between the different programs. Don't be afraid to call the doc's office with any such questions, as if things aren't clear to you, they likely aren't clear to lots of other patients on the program, and the instructions should clarify such things, and if they don't they should be rewritten so that they do. -
First off- I am 6 weeks post op banding. I have 3 ccs in a 10cc band, put in at time of surgery. I am Just wondering about getting something stuck. Thursday night (3 1/2 days ago) I accidently took a handful of pills all at once. How dumb! I knew as soon as I started to swallow I was in trouble. Well, since then I haven't had much of an appetite. I did have some pain between my breast a couple days. I am trying to eat but nothing sounds good. I have only been eating yogurt and scrambled eggs with melted cheese. That and warm Water is about the only thing that sounds good. Oh and I had some cream of wheat. Here it is Monday and I still have no appetite. My stomach feels "jittery" at times, if that makes sense. The pain has subsided. I just feel so weak. I do have an appointment with the surgeon day after tomorrow. They had planned on doing a fill, but I say NO! I don't think they would anyway with me feeling the way I do. My question is does this sound what others have gone through after getting something stuck? When the band slips you throw up right? Or can't get food down? Thanks

My nutritionist's advice: Eat as few carbs as you can, stomach as much Protein as you can (my goal is 60-80 grams a day). Drink the Protein shakes if you have to. There are ways to make meat or dairy protein more interesting. I am still on purées but made a pot roast, add a tsp of pesto or some salsa to chicken and eat hummus, tofu, greek yogurt, tuna, eggs, etc to break up the monotony. All these foods are high in protein. The more carbs you consume the harder it will be to lose weight over time. You can introduce cooked vegetables and some fruit (beware of the sugar) for variety but you should only be consuming starches and simple carbs in strict moderation.

Help please. Is my band to tight?
r_martin77 replied to r_martin77's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Thank you so much for the imput. when i say vomiting I mean i will be eating and suddenly feel uncomfortable in my chest like the foods not going down then have to go to the bathroom and throw up chunks of food. It happens all the time now but I thought maybe i was eating wrong because several of the times its happened it was bread but then when it happened w/ yogurt I started to worry. Water stays down as long as i dont drink to much to fast. I havent had any problems until recently and I just thought maybe once i started vomiting that it was causing the band to tighten or swell. I dont have insurance so was trying to avoid going back to doctor unless I have to. Thanks -
I get a lot of my daily protein from chicken, eggs, cheese, and yogurt. Those are my main sources.

I got hungry on post op day 6. I ate some Protein with no sugar and I feel better. I drink all the time. I had a Soup with chicken broth and eggs. I blended well and it was so good and filling. I had the sleeve. I was given so yogurt but it was too sweet because I had a dumping episode after that. Add some protein in your diet slowly and see if that helps. Diet plan that I was given is f'd up
TLW replied to Autumn Riley Arnold's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You really won't feel very hungry for a few months, but by your first month some easy digestible foods are Yogurt, scrambled eggs, shredded chicken, turkey with a broth (moist is the easiest to eat), peanut butter, protein shakes, sugar free pudding, sugar free jello. You basically will work on eating protein and very little 2-3 ounces will fill you, I know it sounds crazy, but I am a year post mop and 4 ounces of chicken fills me up. Also remember natural sugars versus processed sugar foods are very different. I haven't had bananas yet. Remember the majority of weight you lose will be during the first 5-6 months and the. It really starts to slow down, so enjoy the not feeling hungry and just focus on proteins, and keeping hydrated. I live on chickens, Powerade zero and coffee -
cottage cheese or greek yogurt...shortly you can add Kashi go lean cereal with milk... the cereal has 14 gms of protein +whats in the milk, and tastes good! I also bake things with Bobs Red Mill low carb baking mix... I had chocolate donuts with almond butter for breakfast today...Check eggface for great low carb high protein baked recipes.

Try anything and everything. I tried chicken salad and was not impressed. Maybe it was the way I made it. Fish, shrimp, shell fish? Also I make protein shakes with mango and strawberries. Also Greek yogurt. Good luck! I know it's frustrating!

What Do U Mean By That?
Webchickadee replied to bandalyons83's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Early on I thought I was having problems with dairy, but eventually I figured out that the very loose stools were due to the post-op antibiotics. It cleared up as soon as I finished taking the antibiotics, and started eating mushies and solids. I have not problems with dairy now (5+ months post-op), but I don't drink regular milk (only unsweetened almond milk, once in a while). cheese, yogurt, cottage cheese, etc. are all well tolerated (and loved!) Now my biggest challenge is eating too fast (I still haven't learned how to slow down enough!), and occasionally eating too much . Just ONE bite too much can send me into bad stomach pain and I have to lie down or walk around (no sitting, crunching my stomach together even more!). And I get the "slimies" where I have excess saliva production, have to swallow alot and wait for it to pass. Not fun! I also get hiccups when I'm full or slightly past full.
