gastric bypass after being banded
MaineMom replied to BLAKQUEEN's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I am looking into a lap band after gastric bypass. I had the Roux-en-Y bypass 12 years ago. Lost 100 lbs., kept it off for about 3 years and then started to gain a little bit back each year. I gained about 85 of it back and have been at this weight (290) for 3 or so years now. What I have learned (a little late, of course!) through my journey...NONE of these procedures are some magic thing that will keep the weight off forever. Everything can be sabotaged and pushed to failure! They are just one tool that can help but we have to change our lifestyle. I have gotten smarter as I've gotten older and hopefully have figured this out...not to late. I am not even sure if the surgeon I am seeing at the end of the month will even to a band after bypass. He needs to put a scope down into my stomach to see if it is possible. We are doing that April 23. I have joined Weight Watchers and Curves to help me change my lifestyle. It seems to be helping but sometimes I feel like I need the restrictions from a band to keep me in check. Jenniferhlee: I don't mean any disrespect but it seems to me that choosing to go to Mexico for your band wasn't the best decision. I am curious as to why you would go to Mexico for this surgery? You said that everything goes straight through you or comes back up--how could you gain any weight this way? It doesn't make sense to me. There can be complications with bypass surgery too. The band is simply put around the top part of your stomach-bypass surgery re-routes your intestines. It is major!! Please make sure you have a top notch bariactric surgeon from the US help you. -

Very frustrated with my case worker
tholbert08 posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am 2 months away from surgery and I will basically have ZERO out of pocket due to meeting my max out of pocket. But I am now being told by my surgeons office that they won't schedule me in November but that my surgeon is not scheduled at my in network hospital FOR THE ENTIRE MONTH! I am really not happy and I feel like I have lost my voice. Sent from my SM-N920V using the BariatricPal App -
I am getting ready to hopefully be approved for a gastric sleeve. Initially the doctor told me since I have a stricture I would be better off doing the bypass. I did not want to go through what it entails and feel like I would be better with the sleeve. As long as I take the ompressezol I am fine. Has anyone gone into have surgery having a stricture already and did fine??? Waiting in Alabama

Fast Track To Sleeve
traceyinflorida replied to evonnrae's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
When I finally made up my mind, I was READY to do it right away and was disappointed to find out I had to go through six months of insurance required nutrition counceiling. The funny thing is, when I finally got approval and got my date, I also felt like everything was going so fast and was overwhelming. I had been thinking about it for over six months and I was suddenly overwhelmed by it??!! I guess my point is that it is a big step in anyone's life regardless of if you have weeks or months to think about it. Getting nervous about it is completely normal. It sounds like you have taken the time to do your research on it and you are ready. A November surgery date still gives you two months to mentally prepare. With all of your appointments happening in rapid succession, it just seems like it is happening tomorrow. Take a deep breath, relax and look forward to the journey of becoming a healthier, happier you! (and know that I am green with envy that you didn't have to wait six months!! ) -
Thought I had decided....but now what to do???
Onnie67 replied to maryomalley's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I know my best friend has looked into both bypass and banding. The best thing with banding is that you keep your insides the same. And once you do bypass, you are done. It can not be reversed. She and her doctor decided to try lap banding first, and if it is not successful, then she can look into bypass. Also, he stressed...that with banding you have to exercise. It is a TOOL...bypass, the weight will come off no matter if you sit on your duff or if you exercise....just some food for thought! -

Everyone ends up with a different experience no matter which surgery you choose. I have a friend that is about four years post op, is struggling with anemia and has gained some ( maybe twenty to twenty five pounds) of the weight back. Has trouble with some Desserts with the dumping syndrome, but cheesecake( and some other desserts) are no problem. Some gastric bypass people gain their weight back and some Lap Band gain their weight back. For me, GBP was not an option. I could not get over the rerouting and bypassing of my stomach issue. As far as what you can eat after. That varies, too. Some banders choose a stronger level of restriction or band fill than others and with a strong fill level, it's possible to have difficulty with a larger variety of food. But having the flexibility with the band is something that bypass don't have. Their pouch is formed and that's it. No adjustment is possible. did your surgeon say why he thought GBP was better for you? Many surgeons prefer one procedure over another simply because they do more of them and a few might prefer it as ins. pays more. Or are they doing more Bypass because they keep recommending it? So far, I do not slime, I have had food stuck a couple times in the beginning stage of being banded. Why is it hard getting fills? It takes about a 10 min. appt for my fills and most of that time is talking to the PA about how I'm doing. Yes, losing weight is slower with bands but many GBP patients look wasted and gray in the first six months from the rapid weight loss and the malabsorbtion of nutrients. Both procedures have pros and cons. Keep reading and learning about both procedures and you'll be able to make your decision. There are forums that have more GBP people then banders, this site has mostly banders on it. -
So have done 1 of the 3 nutritionist visits (another one tomorrow), the seminar, and saw the therapist today. So getting closer to finding out if Aetna will cover the revision. Only having second thoughts on band to sleeve or band to gastric. Was gun ho for sleeve but therapist today was recommending the bypass. Thoughts?

For those who read my previous post earlier today..I spoke to my friend who had gastric bypass surgery about a year ago. I'm feeling better now about having the surgery...another plus is that I will quit smoking!!! YEAH!!!!!!!!! I call the hospital tomorrow for pre-registration. Not sure how long the process will take before my surgery can be scheduled...but it'll be enough time for me to get the right "mindset" Thanks for your support...I'm sure I'll need a lot more as this progresses

Liquid Diet Questions
Angela Read replied to AmberFL's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Did your doctor give you a list of what was tolerated on the liquid diet? I would just follow what was suggested for the liquid diet phase. Each doctor has their own plan specialized for their patients. I had gastric bypass and had to do a full one week of protein, water and decaf tea. My friend who had the sleeve also did a full one week liquid diet but also was allowed one low cal meal. -
I was reading some information on stomaphyX procedure which is done through endoscopy....isn't that basically the same as VSG, though it is done to patients who have had RNY previously and stretched out the stomach? StomaphyX - Bariatric Revision for Gastric Bypass Surgery Would sure as heck be nice to have it done without incisions.

Good luck on attaining your new life and health goals! I want to share that I was banded on November 2 of last year and as of today have lost 60 lb. It really does work. The problems have been minimal for me. I have to watch what I eat, eat slowly, etc. I still can't expect to eat sweets and regular ice cream if I want to lose weight, and I view the band as only a HELP, not a magical cure. I hope you will be able to see it in that light as well, knowing you would be able to sabotage your weight loss by eating the wrong things, things that can go through a band. Best wishes. Steve :cheers2:

Finally Saying Hello :)
TransformerOfYoungMinds posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I have been lurking on these boards for months, and finally decided to create an account a couple weeks ago. I am a 31-year-old middle school teacher who has battled weight problems since 3rd grade. Five years ago, I lost over 60 pounds on Weight Watchers, which I loved!!!! The point thing was so easy, I was working out like a madwoman, life was great.... until my father, who I loved more than anything, died unexpectedly (heart attack, diabetes, sleep apnea-- I have no idea... my mom did not want to do an autopsy). Over the next 11 months, I also lost my dog (who I adored), my great uncle, my uncle, and my grandfather (my last living grandparent). Needless to say, the weight came back on, and then some. I battled depression during this time, but came out on top. My father's death inspired me to do what I love, so I went back to school and got my teaching credential. Last year was my first year teaching and it is the best decision I have ever made. I went back on Weight Watchers earlier this year, and got down to 289. At this time, i began researching WLS. One of my co-workers got the lap band, so initially I wanted that as well. I even went to an amazing seminar (Dr. Billy in Ventura, CA). His office said I need to contact my insurance, which I did. My PCP referred me to the Options program though Kaiser. I went to my first orientation, where the sleeve was mentioned. Since that day in May, I have researched tirelessly online while (not so) patiently waiting for my first Options class at the end of July. Thanks to all of you amazing posters, I am truly looking forward to this journey. I am hoping to be sleeved in November while on my Thanksgiving break from school. You have all been so informative.... I ordered unjury Protein powder, a blender ball cup, and picked up a bunch of sugar-free Torani syrups at Smart & Final. Had my first Protein shake for Breakfast this morning (Unjury chocolate Splendor and Water with a little bit of the Chocolate and Salted Caramel sugar-free Toranis)... it was great!!!!! I just wanted to introduce myself and thank you for sharing your experiences......I am so motivated to begin this next chapter of my life. Sleeve me!!!! Allison -
Yes is very few doctors that do that lol I think she felt even more like a mom to tell me that because we were both from the same country well my family is Dominican I was both here but I think that's why. So in a way thank god she said all that To me because she put that idea in my head and I did my research and here I am now lol . I only knew about gastric bypass and I didn't want to do that since I seem friends of mine gain back the weight after five yrs but to know the sleeve is different and lowers the chance of that happening is great but of course eating right and exercise will do the trick

Hello Ladies and Gentlemen! My name is Brenda and on September 2nd I had the gastric bypass surgery. It took me a few years to get myself to admit I needed this, and I am happy I made this decision. My surgery took longer than the surgeon anticipated due to scar tissue from a previous surgery. The surgeon was still able to do the surgery laparoscopic after cleaning up the scar tissue. After one setback due to diarrhea and dehydration I pray I am on the right path now. Discouraged at first because of an 8 lb weight gain(which the surgeon said was due to all the intravenous fluids I was given) I am happy to say in a week I've lost 10 lbs! Prayers for great success for all of you on this weight loss journey. Here's to a happier and healthier lifestyle ????????

Hi I'm Jaclyn and I'm 18 years old. November 2005 my mom went to Utah to get banded. After a year and 50 lbs of weightloss I was given permission to be banded. I was 16 when I got banded Sep 21, 2006 at 236.4 lbs by Dr. McKeen with South Bay Bariatrics in Los Gatos, CA. By my 17th birthday in May I was 139 lbs with a total weight loss of 97 lbs. In September 2007 I was rebanded when my band slipped and I hadn't eaten or drank anything for 7 days. By that time I was anorexic and belemic and would have starved to death if I didn't go in. Since then I've controlled my band and am at a solid 160 lbs and no where near slipping. I've experienced the worst case scenario and and glad b/c it made me aware of the consequences. I'm going on 3 years and I'm happy and healthy =] Feel free to ask me anything, I've been through it all and am happy to answer any questions

Hello all! Words cannot express how happy I am to FINALLY  get my surgery date. I'm a Kaiser so cal "gal" and those of you who are Kaiser members know how long the process is. Started my classes in Feb. Had my group session with the surgeons last sat (Aug 7) and just got my call yesterday. I'll be having my surgery done on Monday, November 1st! (with Dr. Zane). 11 more weeks to go (and coutning!). I'm excited and nervous and anxious and I feel like a little kid on Christmas eve. I have a million thoughts goign through my mind. I think I'll be on this forum a lot more often to read about the experience in the beginning for those of you who've had the surgery already. It really is more motivation now to get into the gym more often. I'm trying to lose as much as possible beforehand. Happy Hump day! =)

Bread, dry turkey, chicken strips. First fill on the 1/8, I get hungry between meals right now but if I eat a meal I get full. I will be glad when no christmas cookies or left. Strangely it seems that I could eat all the cookies I want. I hope that changes after the first fill, Haven't done bad though 41 lbs. since start of liquids in November. Good Luck everyone.
