Needing something to control appetite
jess9395 replied to Jessica2011Marie's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I haven't read the other responses I'm sure there are some good ones but first of all, an appetite suppressant might make you not hungry but it won't take away any grumpiness/not feeling good that are caused by not getting enough food/calories/protein. Second taste is not a reason you CAN'T do something. Throwing up or gagging or nausea or acid stomach might be, but taste is a WON'T not a can't. Sometimes we just have to suffer through what we don't like for a greater good down the road. Third yes you better find a Protein source you can tolerate because you will need it post op. There are so so so many, keep trying. Took me a long time to find the ones I use. Bought a lot of samples (try Nashua nutrition) and some tubs I returned (Vitamin shoppe is good about those) or gave away or tossed. -
Needing something to control appetite

IMHO, medication for appetite suppression just screws up the head even more. there are other flavors of protein and you could make your own, check into Unjury. -
Needing something to control appetite
Inner Surfer Girl replied to Jessica2011Marie's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I agree, rather than suppress your appetite you need to get in your protein. You want to go into surgery as healthy as possible, and starving and medicating yourself will only hurt you. -

Hey everyone! I've been excited about surgery since my first consultation on October 6, but am now starting to get nervous. The surgery should be in January. Today, I scheduled the egd for December 12 and I was like... "this is really happening". So although I truly want the surgery and believe it to be the right thing, I'm nervous for the first time. I'm not making time for exercise. I'm getting my Water intake, but am eating way more than I should. I meet with the dietician on Dec 5 for the last time, and am sure I will not have lost weight. I don't know. Just having anxiety. I don't even know what to plan for. Do I need to get some containers for Protein shakes? I wish there was a checklist... Thank you for contributing to such a wonderful forum and offering up advice and experience. It is truly appreciated! Olivia

Welcome Mal! Your story is similar to many of us on this site! I am sure you will find lots of valuable information here. I would suggest you start a dedicated notebook to add info you see here. I sit in the late evenings or early morning and read new posts, then add the tidbits of great knowledge and tips to the various categories specific to this procedure... Vitamins, types of protein powders/drinks, constipation, books, saggy skin, great websites, foods at certain stages, etc. Also, you might want to add the area where you are looking for your surgeon in a post. There are people here from across the nation and around the world! It is great to have you! Good luck with this very interesting journey! -
Meal Planning and Prepping
Christinamo7 replied to Jennifer Dixon's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
one thing I do is on the weekend I typically pre-prepare a bunch of Protein. chicken breasts, ground sirloin and ground turkey blend, etc. sometimes I make ahead touch down taco dip and then divide it in to servings. I measure out some Snacks that are almonds, dried cherries and a couple of chocolate chips. I pre-prepare snacks of cottage cheese or ham with swiss and asparagus roll ups. so they are grab and go in the fridge for during the week. I fix my work lunches with the prepared Proteins. the ones I listed are cooked with garlic salt and pepper and are versatile. I can add salsa, or spag sauce or mexican seasonings. The rest of the protein goes in the fridge for dinners and then it is a simple thing to prepare an easy meal that fits with my calories/protein goals in the evening when I don't even want to do anything at all. -

Sleeved 3 weeks ago and now stalled
ldpbell replied to Phil in NY's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I was in a stall or so I thought that was what it was. Went almost two weeks without losing anything. I was getting really disappointed. Then, I weighed and had lost another six pounds. I was happy again. I was beginning to think I was doing something wrong. Sometimes, I get constipated and think maybe that is what's wrong. I use to eat lots of veggies, but not, it is mostly Protein. Then again, sometimes I thiink I am not going to make it to the restroom quick enough. It's a little strange but I guess it just takes getting use to. I have lost 63 pounds total since liquid diet before surgery. It will be two months on the 25th..I'm not too disappointed. I know I didn't put all the weight on over night and it will take time. Just get impatient sometimes thats all. I see how much everyone around me eats and I eat like three or four bites and thats it..just feels it should be a greater loss. I sometimes get this weird feeling, its not that I'm hungry, or indigestion, its just a weird like feeling. I can't really explain it, so I have gotten in the habit of carrying sunflower seeds around with me. I just suck on those. They have the flavored ones. It seems to help with the wanting food when I see others around me eating. That isn't all the time though, just some time. I know, I'm weird..right? lol ldpbell -
Band to Sleeve Revision in Mexico
LilMissDiva Irene replied to kekerene's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hi Keke, welcome to VST!! Dr. Aceves did my revision in Sept of 2010. He is excellent, professional, his hospital and staff are top notch and very attentive, and his technique is absolutely amazing!!! I've had nothing but success with my sleeve where I had none with my band. I was very nervous and even skeptical going in, but I didn't have a choice. I needed to do something. My first choice was Dr. Cirangle w/ LapSF. Unfortunately I couldn't gather enough funds to use his services and my insurance was not helpful with my revision what so ever. So, I chose the next best option in my area. Just so happened he is in Mexicali!! I was going to go to a very reputable Dr. for what I could afford. I don't regret my decision AT ALL! Good luck to you in your decision. -
I'm getting re-approved for surgery using Dr. Balette in Houston after being initially approved in August and the week-before preop blood work discovering I was pregnant (I had no clue). That was an interesting phonecall from the doc!!! A little background, I lost my 16 month son to a rare aggressive brain cancer within 8 weeks of his diagnosis and decided to have surgery to become more healthy for my surviving 5 year old son. This discovered pregnancy was both a surprise and blessing....I had my new son (3rd) in March and am preparing mentally for surgery again, soon, as I've met my out of pocket w this pregnancy and so the surgery will be at no cost. I am remarkable at surgeries and pain, having 3 csections and never having taken pain meds and up walking within 4-6 hours with all so they are comfortable w surgery sometime this summer. What creative foods have you found helpful? This came up as I was looking for cal count for a new salad at Panera Bread and seeing a black bean Soup for 140 cals. My first thought was "that would purée nicely and taste savory..." Looking for other ideas! I'm new to the board! Working beyond grief for a better life!

When did your toughest weight loss plateau occur?
DetChatt replied to Alex Brecher's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
My first (note FIRST) major plateau was from about 6-8 months out. I didn't do anything wrong, but I finally figured out that I needed to change things up if I was going to break through it. Stepping up the exercise and changing up my eating (even more protein and less of everything else) was and is my secret. -
"only" 9 lbs in two weeks? Your expectations are very very high! Yes, it is completely normal to stop and start your weight loss, at any time, but particularly in the first several weeks after surgery, when your body is focused on healing after major trauma, not on obeying whatever mechanical weight loss expectations we all have When you say "soft solid protein only" does that mean you are not allowed protein shakes? I was able to get my full 75 grams of protein every day starting within 24 hours of surgery, but would never have been able to do it without protein shakes. Frankly I doubt it is realistic to expect anyone to get in their full complement of protein without shakes so soon after surgery, unless maybe if you are just constantly eating -- which to me does not seem like a healthy habit to build up.

Sorry Maybe Tmi But I Need To Know!
Jepegurl replied to cbarreto's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I hear this can happen with protein shakes but if yours are lactose free I don't know why. I was banded 4/18 too. Yay for us!! But sorry to hear of your troubles. My bowels have been behaving since my diet has been advanced and I rarely, If ever, drink my protein now. Maybe that's something to look forward to? -
Crushed by today's weigh-in
Dairymary replied to White Sale's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
First of all, this is totally normal. You have just been put through major surgery. You were pumped full of fluids, your tissues are swollen, your body is in shock and holding on to every resource it can. Looks like you've already lost over 30 pounds which is great. Your body is simply doing what bodies do....trying to survive this crazy stuff you are putting it through. Second of all, your BMI is quite low so even once you start losing, it will not be at a record pace. Took me 6 months of losing to get to where you are starting. And another year to reach goal. Be patient. Third, what happens in these first couple months and the rate at which you lose means pretty much nothing in regards to long term success or failure (unless, of course, you throw in the towel and don't do your part as far as following the program). So keep hitting your Protein and Fluid goals (mine were 80g and 100oz respectively) and you will lose. -
the band (to my understanding) wont make you full.....it will help you eat less so its up to you to choose what foods to eat....but def drink alot and fill up on protein (to help you) feel full longer until you get that fill..but dont just think the fill will help you lose weight.....(i dont have one and i am losing) because i am making sure i am eating my allotted amount and careful of my cal intake...(if you eat more cals then you burn off, you will gain)....band or no band..

You can add protein powder to this and some milk to help it absorb. You cannot taste the 'chalk' in the cheese.

Hi Gang, Thanks for all the great advice re: being so hungry, you're right, I sure won't starve and a little suffering never hurt anyone and best of all, the weight I'm losing on the post-op liquid diet will stay off with the help of the band. My question is, I'm going in for my first fill in about two weeks. I don't know the size of my band but am wondering how much I should get it filled in terms of fractions (half filled etc.) I guess I want to be able to consume about a half cup of food per meal. I don' want the most restricted option but also not the most liberal. The middle road so to speak. I want to be able to eat somewhat normally (just much smaller portions) and take longer to lose the weight. I am a self pay who has to drive 2.5 hours to the Dr. and only get one fill included in the price so I can not afford to experimentplay with different fill levels. My Drs are also German and while their English is pretty good it is also nice to have a good idea of what I want before I see them so that I can better communicate this to them. THANKS!

Protein Drink That Isn't Sweet?
Tashabella replied to Connorsmama7's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
You do get really fed up with the sweet stuff. I have been having fat free Soups (no lumps, chunks, etc.) with Protein powder in them at least once a day to break it up so it's not so monotonous. I don't get soft food until the middle of next week. I bought GENEPRO Genetic Tri-Protein Peptide Powder online from Amazon and it came the next day. I saw a post on this site where someone recommended it. It only takes 1 tablespoon and it mixes well with my soups. What I do is put the powder in a glass and add a few teaspoons of hot soup and stir it to make a paste and then slowly add more soup and stir, repeat. It blends really well this way. Other people say they mix it in their beverages, including Water, and can't tell it's there. This Protein Powder has been a blessing for me!!! -
Protein Drink That Isn't Sweet?
Auntiex3 replied to Connorsmama7's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'm 11 days post op, and I struggle with my Protein daily! I used the EAS chocolate before, and never had a problem with it. Now it makes me feel nauseous. I also bought some off Amazon that is "unflavored", it stinks so bad I can't even attempt to taste it for fear of gagging. I also bought some vanilla protein and it does the same as the chocolate. If ou run across something that works, let me know please, bc I'm averaging about 40 g of protein a day. -
Protein Drink That Isn't Sweet?
Thenewnic replied to Connorsmama7's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I too am tired of everything sweet. I tried the Un jury Chicken soup and gagged. I tried adding unflavored protein powder to my broth and it was nasty. Mainly I'm trying to drink my soup broth which is savory and then waiting 30 minutes and drinking my protein shake.
