  1. Bottomline...she has to make that decision. You need to support her process for reaching it no matter what she chooses. If you can't support that...then I say the marriage has more problems that weight issues. My husband is 56 years old, 6'4", 360 pounds, diabetic, and has had 4 heart attacks in the past 10 years. All of his docs and myself have suggested strongly that he get the bypass. He is scared of the surgery. PERIOD. I don't give him long lists of why it would be good for him. He has a 180 IQ. He's scared, and until he can deal with that...it is what it is. All I say to him is, " look at me". He's very happy that I'm losing and feeling healthy and wants that too. But that doesn't take away the fear. I love him. I support him in any decision he deems right for him. I take care of myself and I don't contribute to his bad eating habits. I love him and when the time is right...he will do what needs to be done. Until then I just love him and treasure him for as long as I can. You know what they say, " You can lead a horse to Water...."

    Lap Band vs. Gastric Sleeve

I think you might have been seeing my sig repeatedly. One does not know if they will tolerate a band until they actually have one. Also, the band does not work for a good number of people and they typically revise to a sleeve or bypass in those cases. The idea is to pick a surgery type and stick with it, only when it does not work for whatever reason would you revise to a different procedure type.
  3. Even with a BMI of 40, Kaiser wants to see that you have tried all the other avenues - ie Healthy Ways at Kaiser and other weight loss programs like Weight Watchers. There is also a Mindful Eating class at Kaiser (I took it at So. Sac) that is in adult psychiatry. My PCP at Elk Grove Kaiser is also not big on WLS, but I had already done Healthy Ways twice, the Mindful eating class, and Weight Watchers a few times. I don't have any co-morbidities - he sent me for the sleep apnea test a couple of years ago when Kaiser only did gastric bypass, but I didn't have it. You can switch PCPs at Kaiser to see if you can get one that is more open to WLS but I think they will all look for certain things in your history as far as attempts to lose the weight. Good Luck.
  4. There are indeed some people that get a leak weeks after surgery, and sometimes there is no easy way to tell why this happens. People who have band to sleeve revisions seem to have issues - perhaps because of tissue erosion from the band that changes the density of the stomach tissue and it has to heal properly. Others no doubt overwhelm the sleeve by eating too much or having carbonated beverages that expand the stomach before it's properly healed. The stages of eating are there for a reason...it makes sense to go err on the side of caution and go easy.

    Heartburn?

I am scheduled for surgery May 21st. On my last pre op appointment with the surgeon I told him I've been experiencing a lot of heartburn lately and he told me with the revision from band to sleeve, it will probably be worse? Anyone has heartburn problems after revision?

How much weight can you lose?

BeautyLocs, With 500 Lap Bands under his belt and good references, it sounds like your doctor is fine. I just became concerned when you mentioned only seeing bypass patients at the support groups, so I got concerned that he mostly does just bypasses. Good luck and I hope you will be a success!
  7. Lap band is placed laparoscopically on the vast majority of people. Some do have to be opened up, but its rare. I was home four hours after my lap band surgery. I was back to work four days later. Some people need more time than that. The most I have seen someone take was two weeks to return to work. Some docs keep their lap band patients overnight at the hospital, some don't. Gastric bypass is, from what I understand, much more invasive and does require more down time...about six weeks on average I think before returning to work from what I read. Its also, again, from what I read, several days in the hospital.

    Getting Started

Dr Aceves did my revision from band to sleeve 9wks ago...I am an RN in a hospital here in the US..There are minor things I would change about how things were done. But, overall, it was the BEST decision I've made and couldn't be happier!!! I didn't have much pain..thought the Lapband hurt 100x more..at least, that's my experience. I felt great and was up walking within a couple of hours of waking up. I used to be a labor and delivery nurse and I would always tell my patients that the best mamas are the ones that take care of themselves!! Best wishes to you and thank you for sharing w/us!! Please keep us updated....most of us have been there!!! Erika
  9. You are really doing well congratulations! I am 50 but I feel young - I have alot of living to do - with a 9 year old - I want to live to terrorize everyone until I am least 90!!!! Hopefully getting my revision within the next 4-6 weeks - BUT thankyou - you have inspired me again.

im 1 week out and eating!

Mrs. Krzyz, WOW. I can't believe you wrote that! I had to go read some of your old posts.... In one post you recommended that a patient move to the mushie stage (against their doctor's advice). In another post you admitted to eating Wendy's chili six days post-op. How can what WE post be considered detrimental to others, when what YOU are doing goes against the rules specified by our surgeons? I don't get it. The most shocking part, I find, is that you are a teacher. You definitely do not follow the books. We all got fat for eating too much. Now we have a tool inside of us that we must obey (for lack of a better word) ... this is the reason people get banded, so that they HAVE to eat a certain way otherwise there will be consequences to their actions. In my case I ate like a horse, ate too much, then at times barely ate any food at all. Now I am four days post-op and I AM STARVING at times! However I am deathly afraid of messing something up inside of me .. I have two small children, this procedure was self-pay .. I can't mess this one up. I have GOT to stay in control. There is a light at the end of the tunnel, I will be able to eat more foods soon. Sure I have lost 13 pounds, which is great, but that isn't what this initial post-op period is all about. Would you suggest that gastric bypass patients have sugar, even it's just a little bit once in a while? Have some chili, it went down well (never mind it stretches their pouch)?
  11. Carnie Wilson actually had a lapband over her bypass.. I believe last year . Gov. Christie also had lapband.

    Serious Second Thoughts

I think you're very smart to wonder, and I think discussing with your surgeon is good advice. Honestly, if you graze and snack, bypass may be the smarter choice. If you just eat large meals, or can handle "emotional" or head hunger, then the band is a good choice. Diet and exercise has dismally low success rates and you are young; to get a handle on your weight now is a gift you could give yourself, your fiance, and your life to come. Its your choice. It is big and scary. Ask your surgeon by all means.

  14. Hi Headhunter! I attended two different seminars for two different doctors. The first one I almost went with, but as soon as he finished his 30-minute lecture he was out of there! He had about 10 minutes of questions and then he was out of there! He left the rest of the answering of questions up to some other staff. They were talking about all of these things that the insurance did not pay for such as the psych eval, which would have been 250 dollars. Nutritional consult with their nutritionist another 200 dollars, their "own" preop diet 200 dollars, postop diet 150 dollars. All of that the insurance didn't pay for. So, I called my insurance and asked about covering psych evals, nutrition consultations etc, and they told me yes they do. The NUT and the psychiatrist would have to be covered by my insurance, but they would cover it. I didn't like that about that doc. So, I attended another seminar with my doctor I have now. VERY meticulous during the seminar ( although he was a little late due to surgery) but very, very thorough! I asked them up front about the psychiatrist, nutritionist, etc. My insurance covered them all and I only had to pay 10 dollar copay each time. Except for the NUT class and that was 50, but still lots cheaper than the other doc. Also, my doctor has not lost a lap band patient. I don't know about bypass, as I didn't ask that. But, he is very careful and makes sure everything is safe for the patient before doing any surgery. I am on medication now for a peptic ulcer, but I can still have the band placed. He said once I am banded for a few months he wants to do another EGD to check things out down there. He stressed how important it is for me not to indulge in alcohol, NSAIDs, aspirin or even caffeine due to my ulcer situation. He sold me the first time at the seminar and I felt comfortable with my decision. I hope that answered your question If you want to ask me anything else, ask away.

    Carnie Wilson

I totally feel for carnie wilson as it must be 100 times worse to be in the public eye and having every pound lost or gained a newsworthy event. It also makes me sad to know that even with bypass or lapband how hard this struggle is - i've lived it my whole life and while i'm hopeful the band will make me a success at weight loss - success to me will mean keeping it for once in my life. And i have a ways to go to even get the weight off.

    Lost Away From Band Land

Hi Terilen, I havent' been banded yet, but like all of us, I have struggled and struggled with weight loss forever. It is really hard to accept that obesity is a disease. One of the things that society wants us to do is TAKE RESPONBSIBILITY for ourselves. Sometimes it is really hard for me to differetiate between lack of willpower and having a disease process. Trying to control the disease of obesity and bulima has to take a supreme amount of mental and physical energy. So you havent' gotten quite gotten where you want to just yet, but you will. You are working with your doctor and therapist. You have recognized some of the mistakes you have made with the band. The key is that you keep trying. One day at a time and NO GUILT. I don't know if you have thought about maybe doing a different type of surgery, like Geezer Sue did. She had a lot of problems with the band and ended up going with a different type of surgery and did really well with it. I am not saying the band is wrong for you... only you can say that along with your doctor. My surgeon recommended that if you have a problem with sweets to go with one of the bypass surgeries. I chose to go with the band for now...because it is the least invasive. But if I have problems or if I don't lose weight over a couple of years then I would consider a different surgery. In other words if the band doesn't work for me, I am not going to beat myself up about it. I know that I have a big sweet tooth and that my surgeon says that increases my risk that the band won't work for me. I would think bulima is a disease that would increase your risk of having trouble with your band. I would also think the band may increase your risk of having trouble with your bulima since it is so easy to PB with the band. I am sending good vibes to you....

    Stomach Stretched?

I brought this up on the gastric bypass side since I had the RNY done and all the responses were also negative in what this PDF file said.

Does everyone 'slime' and have 'PB's?

I think your fooling yourself if you think you are only going to be drinking a liquid diet for the rest of your days. You can include it, but theres still going to be food out there that will tempt you. You know.. I have a friend that had the gastric bypass done.... And she like NEVER throws up unless she is sick with the flu or something like that, I never heard that about the gastric people... :huh2:hmm.. I just hear about the dumping thing if she eats too much sugary sweet stuff. Well, whatever you choose, good luck!:smile2:
  21. I've had peripheral neuropathy (PN) for some 10 years now. Although it started off as fairly mild, in recent years it has progressed to where I have daily pain in my hands and feet and I take a cocktail of medications to deal with the symptoms. I have just begun to consider Lap-Band surgery for myself. My main concern is that it might aggravate my PN rather than alleviate it. I've decided against gastric bypass surgery for that very reason: although it can cure diabetes, a small-but-significant percentage of patients develop PN as a result of malabsorption of B Vitamins. I'm assuming that if it can trigger neuropathy, it may also aggravate existing neuropathy. Has anyone else gone into lap-band surgery with preexisting PN? thanks, Sue
  22. Hi Az sunshine, I to am in the beautiful sunshine state, I live in Show Low in summer and San Tan Valley in winter. Where are you at? My surgery date isn't until the end of Oct as I am a revision from band to sleeve. Unfortunately my band eroded and could not be done at the same time. My Dr. will be Dr. Ponce De Leon and I am getting very excited about it and would love to have a local sleeve buddy, are you game? You can PM me if you like my name is Debbie.

    Hysterectomy Jan. 30th, advice needed.

Well I did mine the other way around---had the hysterectomy then the band. Have you discussed the band with your gyno? That seems like the first step. Where abouts is your port? My port is fairly high, and my hysterectomy scar is low, across at the base of my belly, just above my pubic bone----nowhere near where the port/tubing/band would be affected. As for the tummy tuck during the hysterectomy, if he would do it, I would jump on it!!! If he doesn't do it, you will end up having it later. Which would be 2 surgeries, if it is still tight when you get to goal, then this way you saved yourself the 2nd surgery, if not, you can have it revised then, and you have lost nothing! I was still at my heaviest when I had my hysterectomy---I only wish I had done it to where I could have some of this belly removed!!! Sounds like it is time to talk to the Doc!!! I can o nly imagine how much easier it would be to heal without the weight of that on the incision....good luck to you. I love my band---and I love the hysterectomy just as much I think!!!! Kat

    Gyno and Hydration

I went to my gyno today and told him of my banding. He was very supportive of the band. He was talking about the risks associated with the bypass. He was telling me he was just through with a surgery when one of the other surgeons asked him to assist with a bypass that just came into the ER. Part of his bowel had died. He said witjin 2 hours, that man would have died. But he said what was even more serious is the state of the re-routing, they could not figure out how to get the bowel stiched back so everything flowed in it's natural direction because it was such a mess in there. He said the surgeon he assisted was the best on staff too. (He was not the surgeon who did the bypass) He also said it sometimes doesn't matter how good your surgeon is, it's such a serious surgery the body may just not take to it. ANd he mentioned most seem to gain weight back even after all of that. He was so supportive though, telling me how extra weight can cause Uterine cancer and how, and that maybe once my weight is down, I can go back on BC pills. STill having gas pains, this time in my lower left bowel as well as my shoulder. Ouch. Hurts to cough. I'm also having trouble keeping hydrated. I distend my sstomach trying to get the water in. My urine was very very yellow today.

    Band To Sleeve?

Connie, Comparing to the time with the band the sleeve is wonderful for me.It took me 3 months to adapt to eating very tiny, very tasty portions of food.I am satisfied and happy.I feel better when I eat very very little. And I have lost 55 pounds even without doing regular exercise (play squash once or twice a week)With the band I had to diet and exercise like a maniac all the time. Not one pound came off by itself. Not one! The band is a bad idea as far as I am concerned,a temporary cure for a permanent problem. Hope you can get your revision approved. xxo
