I just read your response for this person as well. I'm definitely trying to uplift my spirits in every way! I guess it's all about calorie counting and keeping active! I wonder if after so many years, one's stomach does actually shrink. Hi! Life without the band has been good and bad. I am constantly struggling with trying to lose weight. I eat between 1200 to 1500 calories per day. I walk 30 to 45 minutes each day. I also do Zumba 3 times a week for 60 mins and strength training twice a week. I feel like I am not getting very far with weight loss. I haven't gained. As far as physically, I feel soooooo much better! I don't have reflux anymore and I can sleep on 1 pillow instead of 8 pillows. I still feel some restriction due to the smaller size of my stomach, I can eat more but i get full usually on half a sandwich. I still try to focus on healthier options. No more vomiting thankfully. Occasionally I have some heartburn but it is very mild and I have a history of it prior to band anyways, but definately has improved since band was removed. Today is October 4th and I can easily do ab workouts at Zumba class. I actually started working on abs about 4 weeks after removal, starting slowly and knowing my limitations and stopping when too uncomfortable. I do not regret the removal at all. It is such a relief for me. I am planning on revising to bypass hopefully next month. Best of luck to you on your band removal, you will feel better once removed. Hopefully I answered your question. If there is anything else specific that you would like to know, I would be happy to tell you anything that can help

Lapband Vs Sleeve Vs Bypass Surgery
feedyoureye replied to hayleylamas's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
It's not half, its 85%. I love my sleeve, have not had any complications, have reached 100% EWL and rock the 100 staples. I eat what I want, in moderation. I have never puked, I never had to visit the Doc for maintenance (except to check my labs... all good). Everyone has to do what they feel is right for them. If you are afraid of cutting out half your stomach, and getting 100 staples, then don't do it. Who could blame you. Personally, I think the size of my stomach was part of my problem, so saying goodbye to it was more of a relief than sad. It may be part of your problem too, and thats why you are looking at WLS, which all reduce the size of your stomach somehow. After years of trying to work my regular stomach to lose weight unsuccessfully, I was looking for a permanent solution, and with a lot of work on my side, with support, exercise, and daily accountability I think I might just make it work for the long haul. Without revision. Fingers crossed. -
Doctor begs me not to have LapBand 2 weeks prior to surgery!
Maddie replied to newnatalie's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Natalie, I originally planned on getting the lapband. But as I did more research and read more forums, it sounded like very few people were happy with it. As I learned of people having revisions, I found out about VSG. Gastric Bypass had too many scary aspects to it, so I decided the sleeve was the way to go for me. I wasn't willing to try the band only to have another procedure down the road. I didn't want trial and error. I wanted a procedure that worked once and for all. It was the best decision of my life. I can only imagine the shock of having your dr suggest the change, but thank goodness he did. It means you have a surgeon who is concerned with what is best for you. As far as what you should do pre-op, try to cut out drinking soda now. I drank Dr. Pepper until the night before surgery and waking up from anesthesia with a caffeine headache sucks. Take before pics and measurements. During those times when you think the scale is moving slow, seeing your progress in pics and seeing how many inches you've lost can really keep you motivated. Continue to do research so that you are well prepared mentally and emotionally. Don't compare yourself to others. Everyone progresses at different rates. If you follow your dr's plan for you, the sleeve will work! Best of luck to you and keep us posted. -
I just found a $550 price difference between two coordinators too. One considers me a "revision" and the other doesnt. Where is this extra $550 going? Something my current coordinator didnt tell me until I questioned the price difference (and was told up front by another coordinator) is that they charge 3% on credit card usage. First I had heard of that and I have been dealing with my coordinator for over 3 months now! That extra $$ means alot when you are looking at spending right up to your last saved penny and is something that I feel should have been told up front when I was asking about the payment options, etc.!

stl - You are not alone. After 3 difficult fills (under flouro) and my restriction fading so quickly, my surgeon suspected an issue. Sure enough, my band flipped, and all the poking around to access it caused a leak. It was late March by the time we figured this out, and because my ins changed Jan2010, I had to pay cash for my port revision. I was not able to get the revision until late May. So I, too, feel way behind the game. I so much wanted to be under 300 by this time, and can't seem to crack 320. Having to revise all my goals was so disheartening, I stopping logging/graphing my weight. It has been a slow go to "get back on the wagon", since I has essentially been living like I didn't have the band from March until my revision. I'm still re-learning the "rules." I'm due for a fill - definitely have some restriction, but not enough. I had my first EVER sliming/PB episode and i was so happy! :tongue_smilie:At least I know my band is working and I'm figuring out my limits. I read the posts occasionally for inspiration. I know I will get there eventually - and so will you!

Previous Bander... getting VSG soon... Please talk to me..
liannatx replied to Tracytma's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am a revision from LapBand. I am very pleased with this little stomach. I am losing slowly, but it is so much better than how I lived with the Band. I was throwing up daily even with my band empty... It had slipped and developed so much scar tissue that removal was the only option. I am losing 1-2 lbs per week, so I am not losing rapidly like some people do but it is pretty steady and I have no doubts that I will make it back down to a healthy weight. I have no regrets. -
I made the decision for me it wasn't worth it... But as for the running/training it's at least 6 weeks post op before you can run again, often 8 depending on your surgeon. I would wait till after the half marathon!!! In fact I scheduled all my plastics around my running schedule. Had them 10 days after my first marathon so I could take time to recover from both! I still haven't had a small scar (dog ear) revision done because I haven't found a break long enough in my running schedule!

Ok.....confession time..... I have not been logging in for several months, mostly because I have not been losing weight for several months. Between my first and second fill (March) my port flipped and I had to have a revision surgery. I started getting so discouraged about the second surgery. Since then, I have not lost any weight. In fact, I have gained (to the point that I now weigh 2 lbs heavier than I did the day of surgery). I have some restriction but not enough to make me stop eating. I am really having a hard time staying motivated when I am not seeing any results. I am so happy for all you December banders who are doing so well. Does any one have any advice on how to make it through the rough spots? :cursing:

Anyone have a sugically repaired slip and still lost weight after?
JACKIEO85 replied to luvzpitbullz's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I'm sorry that your going through this,I'd hope that things can be resolved but the reality is that it probably Won't. I'd get the band removed rather than risk more complications. Reflux, and aspiration are NOT NORMAL. And you don't HAVE to have ANY other WLS, just because your surgeon does a particular surgery. And yes I know about the emotional roller coaster ride you'll be on if you choose not to revise. BUT I believe your STRONG enough to do what is needed. Don't risk your health further. I've copied some literature about slips. Complications associated with adjustable gastric banding for morbid obesity: a surgeon’s guide Anterior slip results from upward migration of the anterior wall of the stomach through the band. This can be due to insufficient anterior fixation and disruption of the fixation sutures. The second cause may be related to increased pressure in the pouch due to early solid food, vomiting, overeating or early (< 4 wk) band fill Posterior slip is defined as a herniation of the posterior wall of the stomach through the band. This is usually related to the surgical technique but is less frequent now with adoption of the pars flaccida approach instead of the perigastric approach In both types of slip, the patient usually presents with dysphagia, vomiting, regurgitation and food intolerance. The diagnosis is made by upper gastrointestinal series. Complications related to band slip include gastric perforation, necrosis of the slipped stomach (type-V prolapse), upper gastrointestinal bleeding and aspiration pneumonia. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3038361/ -
Lapband Vs Sleeve Vs Bypass Surgery
sifford1 replied to hayleylamas's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Your metabolism re adjusts about 18-24 months. You basically have that amount of time to get used to eating right! I worry about banders. Your metabolism should do the same , kinda slows down, so what happens when the band comes off!!!! Is that why, when band problems happen , people need to get revisions! ? -
I revised to RNY from VSG because of severe reflux. I'm 4 months post op. I eat berries every now and then, but I really can't eat any fruit. All fruit makes my heart beat like it's pounding out of my chest and I feel very sick. My surgeon said that that reaction should mellow with time, but at this point, I'd rather avoid the fruit than suffer the consequences.

Good morning from Anchorage Alaska! Congratulations on your surgery! You are on a life long journey for a healthier you. Bypass is a tool that I believe God has given us to use. What a blessing! I had Gastric Bypass 16 months ago on the 16th of this month. I have lost more weight than my surgeon told that I would and have had to revise my weight loss goal! He told me I would loose 75 pounds, I have lost 100 pounds and feel great! Well, with following orders and exercising, Protein and Water I have exceeded his prediction. When I went for my last doctor visit my blood work showed that my body was absorbing nutrients very well, so well that my doctor asked what kind of Vitamins I was taking and I told him the bariatric vitamins and some of my own that I had previously taken. He asked me not to take vitamins everyday for the next 6 months but only once per week. I was 61 when I had my bypass and am now 62 and glad that I did it. My family was afraid for me at first. But I did my research before the surgery and was able to put their mind at ease. I exercise and get in at least 60 grams of protein each day with sips of water every 10 to 15 minutes. I have had no physical or medical complications from the surgery. I now realize how much time and energy I have spent in the past relating to food. I no longer do that! That's freedom! I have cravings sometimes but I look at where I was and compare it to where I am and decide if I am really hungry or if I'm experiencing head hunger. Usually real hunger is for natural foods not carbs or sugary foods. When you follow the protocols for this surgery it works and you develop new habits that can carry you through the rest of your life. Scripture and Prayer has helped me. Scriptures like Galatians 5:1 and Philippians 4:13. I plan to live this way for the rest of my life. How about you? Again Congratulations to you. Love to hear from you! Vickiebc

# of nights in hospital?
kyleebean replied to kimr's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was in 4 nights. I was a revision from band to sleeve and I had a lot of complications. the surgery itself took over 4 hours due to scar tissue (from the lap band and from a previous spleenectomy). After surgery I couldn't keep anything down because the swelling in my stomach and esophagus was so severe nothing was passing through. I also developed pneumonia and m y left lung collapsed. They also thought I had a blood clot (which I did not). So I had a lot of complications and still was only in 4 days. -
How long have you been banded? It might be time to consider a revision to something like RNY

August Surgery Buddies!
LookingForward22 replied to I Am Enough!'s topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Aug 16th is when my VSG is scheduled. I was preparing myself for bypass … but my surgeon actually suggested VSG after we talked and said if we need to go further, a revision to DS (since I’m a high BMI) is her suggestion. But she’s optimistic that I will be able to meet my health goals and do well with VSG - so now the countdown begins. She will do a hernia repair and also check out my liver while she’s in there - and biopsy if needed. Not looking forward to the 8 day liquid diet… or blood thinner injections - but I am looking forward to all the benefits to come. I’m 48… slightly concerned my thyroid will be a challenge with loosing, but I have managed to loose 50 pounds in the past year (15 of that the last 3 weeks) so I think I have a good momentum going into this. Looking forward to seeing everyone’s progress! -

I was originally considering the sleeve, but my surgeon was concerned about the reflux so we opted for the bypass. I'm so sorry to hear you have to go in for a revision, but I sure hope it brings you some relief. I have a standard two week liquid pre-op diet, nothing special. But I'm modifying my Keto Chow protein to use almond milk instead of heavy cream during that time. Last night I made fluff for the very first time using the SF jello and greek yogurt - it was very good. So experimenting with recipes to see what I like/don't like cause I know I might too tired or need a family member to help -
Not losing fast enough!
marfar7 replied to rmma1000's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I feel ur pain. I'm almost 7 weeks out and lost 17 lbs. been losing and gaining the same 1-2 lbs for the past 2 weeks. it's getting old really fast. I started at 174 (band revision) so I knew I would lose it slower, but this is ridiculous. I'm almost 2 mths out with only 17 lbs lost. Wish I was 30. Count your blessings. I could cut my calories even more than they are but then I'd be miserable and on a diet. Thats why I got the sleeve in the first place, so I would never diet again. I've already lost a size in clothing and that feels good. Good luck! -
Let me clarify...when I had them they were broiled (not fried) and not breaded, nor did I use any mayo for dipping. If you are going to try them, purchase the lump crab cakes and prepare at home in your oven so you know exactly what you are eating. There are MANY ways to have foods that you have enjoyed in the past, you just have to revise the preparation. I did eat them in soft foods bc my surgeons rule was anything that could be cut with a fork--a broiled crab cake falls apart so definetly worked for me. I have operated under the rules of my surgeon at all times-if it's a new food I haven't had, I prepare at home first so that I know it meets my protein expectation along w carbs and sugars. If you liked something in the past, be creative and try to find ways to make it work now. I hate it when someone tells me "no" but love it when I find a way to make it work for my new life-good luck

Did you experience a slow weight loss rate?
hubbark1 replied to ididit34's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I am having a band to bypass revision tomorrow. I chose bypass over sleeve because it is a non restrictive procedure and I had serious issues with reflux due to the band. Because of that my doc recommended bypass rather than the sleeve. -
So I went in yesterday and got another .5 cc's taken out. I feel better, but have a strong feeling it's going to come back again. My Dr said he see's this regergitation/GERD in 20-30% of his patients. Wow. That is alot. He said that when it gets really bad, patients either just get the band removed or changed to Gastric Bypass. This is totally freaking me out. It seems like there is a strong chance that I will have to loose my band! I don't think I would want to revise to anthing permanent like bypass. It sounds like some people just get a new band placed....but isn't this issue just going to happen again? My Dr wants me to see how it goes and if it starts happening again to come back and he'll do the barium swallow. I don't know what I am going to do....

To Puke or Not to Puke, that is the question
hillmama replied to terrimj's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was banded March 25, 2008 Yes I have thrown up! I would throw up occasionally the first six months when I would try new foods or eat improperly - meaning not chewing each bite enough, eating too fast, etc or attempting a food I simply knew I couldn't consume. However, I developed a concentric pouch dilitation after another abdominal surgery almost a year post op. When that happened, I threw up daily, just about every meal, or anytime I put something in my mouth. It varied. I couldn't pinpoint exactly anything, it was very fickle and not normal or predictable. I thought it was normal for awhile, but it was not. throwing up like that is not normal. once the problem was identified, I went through months of trying to fix it nonsurgically with fills and unfills. Got sick alot. Finally had to have a revision. Hope this helps! -
Just decided to get the sleeve instead of the band...and SO happy....I think :)

Wasa had her revision to a sleeve today. I spoke with Nina (Dr.Aceves coodinator) and she told me that everything went just fine. She was in recovery (this was at 530 pm Arizona time) and will be going back to her room very shortly. As soon as I hear from her I will update you all.

Dr. Ponce de Leon. Complicated Revision. Two months out. Best treatment I have ever had in a hospital. Walk with your heating pad.
