  1. Rev Me Up!

    Ain't folks funny.....

I hear ya! I didn't tell anyone about my lap band and I have not told anyone about my sleeve revision. I feel I would be even more misunderstood for the revision because I was barely obese when I went for the revision. Not a lot of people would understand that I needed this surgery to keep me from gaining a ton of weight after I took out the band. To an outsider it might seem drastic, but we each do what we need to do in our lives, right? I know lots of people who have had plastic surgery - nose jobs, face lifts, boob jobs, liposuction, etc. At the most shallow level, I consider this my plastic surgery. It has changed how I look, my health, and how I feel about myself. And, guess what? There is nothing wrong with it. I keep it to myself because I don't need anyone's opinion. I am quite happy with the experience and the results - screw everyone else!

    Microbiology research questions

I had gastric sleeve, not bypass. I was a revision from a lapband (implanted in 2001, removed 2011; sleeve in 2011). My nutritionalist told me that there was strong evidence that people who take probiotics lose weight better and encouraged me to take them after my revision to sleeve. i bought them, but was so burned out on "pills" from the Vitamins that i never did. I lost 150# in 14 months and have been maintaining that loss for 3 years - so made it to a normal/goal weight without them. I recently had another kind of surgery, had a complication and then an infection. I required Iv antibiotics plus was on a total of 3 different types of oral antibiotics. I was pretty sick actually. As i was wrapping up the antibiotics course, i decided to take probiotics as a preventive measure against yeast overgrowth or other imbalances. i feel fine, I feel no different. So, my personal experience neither supports nor contradicts the benefits of probiotics. I had borerline blood sugar - always in the 90s preop. It dropped to low normal levels quite quickly. Most of my blood work was otherwise pretty good - but i have read stories on these forums of very quick improvement of health conditions, faster than you might expect if it were just due to weight loss. I had borderline high blood pressure too, but that has always been more controlled by exercise vs my weight - not sure why.
  3. I originally had RnY bypass - and revised to a new RnY bypass. Further distallized the connection between stomach pouch and intestine; made a smaller stomach pouch, and removed some excess intestine from the first procedure. (The "Candy Cane" portion.)

    Slow weight loss

I'm almost two months out, and that's been my pace nearly the the entire time. I'm a revision (band to sleeve), and it's exactly what my surgeon predicted, with me staying between 600-800 cals most days. Everyone's body is different. Your loss may speed up, it may not. The key is to stick with it, and avoid comparing yourself to others, IME.

    Gall Bladder

I had my gall bladder removed along with having my gastric bypass. My Dr said he wanted to be pro active, that he knew I would have to have it removed in the near future so why cut on me twice :-)

3 weeks post op sleeve gastrectomy

It may seem judgmental but we don’t want you repeating some of our mistakes. I can answer this from both a VSG and an RNY standpoint. High sugar so soon out from surgery is a BAD idea. For example, a couple weeks ago I was 2 months post RNY revision (for GERD) and had 4 bites of a chocolate frosted donut for my daughter’s birthday. To say I felt like I was dying is an understatement. If you don’t want to be spewing from both ends while it feels like you’re running a marathon, I would suggest a different choice. However, if you are craving chocolate I’d suggest sugar free chocolate pudding made with skim milk and extra unflavored protein powder. It’s better for you than an actual piece of sugar filled chocolate and you may find you don’t enjoy the taste of chocolate anymore anyway.

    Gastric sleeve recovery

I was a revision also and my surgery was just under 2 hours. I had a lot of adhesions and scar tissue so that accounted for the extra time. The man who had surgery the same day as I did was a first time surgery person and he was sleeved in just under an hour.

    Lost Friendships

I used to be one of those people that thought gastric bypass was cheating too and that "those" people were weak. Turns out it has saved my life. And if I ended up losing a few friends because of it and they think I took the easy way out then so be it. This is a hard ass journey surround yourself with non judgemental people date of surgery 02/21/12 surgery weight 340 lbs. current weight 146 lbs

    Gastric bypass or sleeve?

I was like you no comorbities. I was a great sleeve candidate. I was a terribly slow loser which I learned to live with. I have since had some complications post pregnancy and will be revised to bypass soon. I have developed terrible GERD with my sleeve. Also, some sleeve drs still do not advise taking NSAIDS. I took them after my c-section and thought I was gonna have a heart attack. Since then my surgeon had told me to stop using them. I think this is an area that is still conflicting amongst the sleeve community. People have success with both and there can be complications with both.

    sleeve vs lap band?

For me, it was important to go with the band once I had decided to pursue weight loss surgery because it didn't involve cutting or removing any parts of my digestive system. I knew conventional diets weren't working for me, but I couldn't bring myself to purposely mutilate my digestive tract, which is healthy and fully functional. That was the key FOR ME. Personal opinion only. At the same time, I find sleeve gastrectomy more attractive than RNY gastric bypass because it's not malabsorptive; the intestines aren't bypassed, so it doesn't cause dumping syndrome or dependence on Vitamin supplements. (Although the fact that the large part of the stomach is REMOVED and THROWN AWAY is a little disturbing to me.) However, critics of the sleeve say many of the same things critics say about the band: that because there aren't dire consequences (dumping) for eating fatty or sugary foods, it's easier to "eat around" than RNY. But when it comes right down to it, anyone can "beat" any of the surgeries and either fail to lose or even gain weight post-op if they try hard enough. It's just a tool. You can make any of the surgeries work for you, and you can work against any of them. It's just that some are better fits for different people in different circumstances. I hope you get all the information you need to find the best fit for you. Good luck!

    Little rant about "diet"

Support group last night . . . well . . . besides being LONG .. . . . . there were like 18 people there (she said the first group of the year is always bigger) . . . with both bypass and lapband . . . about 1/3 of us with lapband and 1/3 of us brand new (both types). It was a lot of "how did you feel when you ate" . . . "did you use your 5 senses as you ate" .. . how everyone did over the holidays . . . and stories of mothers pushing too much food at you . . . and how to deal with it . . . and then we each had to have a goal for the next month . . . mine was to be better with the water and protein on the weekends because I'm not sitting at a desk with a clock in front of me that tells me "tick tick, drink drink" . . . one lady was SUPER losing her hair from not doing her protein. Another RNY has to be infused with iron because she wasn't taking it as needed and her body can't absorb it anymore. There is experience sitting there .. . and stories to be told and heard . . . and networking to be done. It is a good thing (I complain a lot I know) . . . but just a little to long for me . . . it ran past my bed time lol! Good luc with all your stuff today Steph!

did you happen to read that post?

I was aware of where this post was. I was just very offended by the comment "Honestly, I don't understand why people are still getting bands." I took quite personally. I think you would have also if I said the same thing about sleeves and the Bypass. I felt like my choice to get the band was silly and done because insurance would pay for it. I got the band as a tool to help me lose weight. I felt that was the best option for me. I have no issues with anybody posting anywhere regardless of the surgery option you choose. People who had a bad experience with the band should share and caution others but don't bash the choice of getting and staying banded.

    Good News, Bad News

Thanks again for the encouragement. Like most people, I lost that 10 pounds in the first 2 weeks and haven't lost anything since. Exercise is the one part of my life I have kind of under control. I have been a regular gym goer / exerciser for 4 years now. I usually do 45 minutes of some cardio activity - my current favorite is the elliptical trainer. Then I do 45 minutes of weight/strength training. I do this 4 days a week (I try for 5 days a week, but honestly average only 4). It's good to know that there really isn't a set 'window of opportunity' with the band like there is with the bypass surgery. I'll keep my head in the game - and watch green with envy as Betty and every other recently banded person passes me by in the weight loss department. (GO Betty, GO!!)

    The staples...

if you had gastric bypass, the two sections of your stomach are probably sectioned off by staples. I suppose they could have sutured it off, but they usually use staples.

    Full name Gastric bypass?

Abbreviated RNY, there is also a duodinal switch bypass that is less popular and comprises of a VSG and a bypass of the duodenum.

    Questions - Sleeve 2/10/13

lapnicky, Congratulations. I can't speak to the lap to sleeve revision but my experience has been positive with my sleeve. I will tell you the gas pain after surgery was probably the most difficult thing for me to deal with. I listened to the advice posted here. Sip, walk, sip, walk, sip, walk........................Before I could sip liquids, in my case, it was get up, pee, walk, pee, rest, get up, pee, walk, pee, rest...........................Then when I had my leak test and could sip it was sip, sip, sip, get up, pee, walk, pee, set back down or lay down, sip, sip, sip, rest, sip, sip, sip, get up, pee, walk, pee, set back down or lay down, sip, sip, sip, rest, get up, pee, walk, pee.................. Glad I did all that sipping, peeing and walking because once the gas pain was gone, with the pain meds I had-it wasn't that bad. I was very fortunate in that the surgeon I had allowed for a patient controlled pain system. I'd push the button and I was good to go ; ) My surgeon also gave me drugs to prevent nausea and I didn't have any. I think I was one of the lucky ones who didn't react to the anesthesia, drugs or strong pain meds they gave me. Everyone is different in their reactions to the trauma of the surgery, anesthesia, drugs, and pain meds. I hope you are one of the lucky ones too and have a smooth surgery and an easy recovery. Blessings, Kathleen

    Questions - Sleeve 2/10/13

Hubby and I were sleeved Nov/Dec. 2013. Very minor pain (1 dose pain med at home after sleeving, no acid reflux, no heartburn, no spasms, no hunger pangs. Within a few days hardly felt as if we had surgery. We take Omeprazole only I think to prevent an ulcer. Biggest problem? Little burps that tell you when to stop eating LOL! Best wishes. We bypassed all WLS for 10 years til we could have the sleeve. The band stories really scare me. I know there are thousands of success stories, but even so many revisions..... Just so happy with the sleeve. Our only regret is that we did not have it before our health worsened.

    Full liquid diet and pain

So they figured out the source of my pain. My lower or "bypassed" stomach was full and hadn't released anything so they needed to get it out or risk perforation. Well all that sounds fine and dandy except I had just drank my lunch shake and couldn't go under sedation. I am then told I can get a cocktail that will take me to la la land where nothing matters. Apparently, that crap doesn't work on me and after begging the doctor to stop then screaming the entire time as he shoved a metal twin down my abdomen to my stomach. I was hyperventilating and feeling very violated. Could have killed anyone to take a min and get me a drug that worked? I was sick afterwards and needed to be calmed down. But I definitely don't feel safe here anymore and want to go home.

    Low BMIers (30-35) insurance question.

I have a low BMI (27) and was approved by insurance, But I had the lap-band which failed, so i had what they call revision sugary. I can tell you I did have trouble finding a doctor to do the sleeve with a low BMI..... It was not as easy as I thought it would be

    New

My dr also said gastric bypass because it resolves the diabetes and it did for me. I went home without any medication and my last a1c was 5.8. I feel great and my hbp is controlled without meds too. Go for it. Best thing I have ever done. Sent from my iPhone using RNYTalk
  24. Looking for support and knowledge. I had my band placed in September 2012 first half went great down 100 lbs and so much energy ! My friends thought I started drugs! Super happy right!?! Then I got my band to tight and it's been down hill since. Finally after a year and a half of absolutely no energy and terrible heartburn, even while taking omeprozole, I finally convinced them to do the scope. Well now I have Barrett's esophagus that my band has caused and a high risk of it developing into cancer. Devastated at this point but optimistic that the revision surgery will go great and I can get back to life. Waiting for insurance approval and a surgery date! Looking forward to being in this group for much needed support! My family lost someone close to me hem who had gastric so they are not supportive of my decision to want to be healthy and run someday!
  25. Hello: I'm a former bandster that has had a bit of a history with band. First (small) band July 2007. Slipped and revised to larger band July 2010. Then, band eroded and removed July 2013. So, my fabulous Lap Band Surgeon just recently started doing sleeves. I think he's done less than 20 at this point, but he just started six months ago. He's done thousands of bands. He recommended that I go and see Dr. Nepomnayshy for a consult prior to proceeding with the sleeve to see if he thinks I should be sleeved, and if so, should I be sleeved by someone with more experience because I may have scar tissue due to two bands and erosion. Has anybody on this forum seen Dr. Nepomnayshy? If so, please give me your opinions about him, and his group in general. It's okay to send a pm if you don't want to post for everyone to see. I have an appointment in March with Dr. Nepomnayshy. I really would prefer to have surgery with Dr. Adam Glasgow, but I need to get an experienced sleeve surgeon's opinion. Dr. Glasgow and Dr. Nepomnayshy know each other. Dr. Glasgow had Dr. Nepomnayshy observe him doing sleeves when he first started. I look forward to and appreciate your feedback. Thank you. Sue
