  1. A few of the rules I remember which made me successful at losing 50 lbs. were: >use a salad plate instead of a dinner plate >3 bites of protein, 3 bites of veggie, 1 bite of carb, repeat until satisfied >eat every 3 hours >fill up on protein for snacks, (hard boiled egg with a piece of cheese, cottage cheese, yogurt, chicken breast etc.) >never drink your calories, except for a protein shake >No carbonated drinks > do not frink for 30 min. before and for 30 min after a meal >eat slowly, chew much, small bites >Limit fruit, due to the sugar it converts to Can anyone help me think of anymore? especially designated for lapbanders? I realize all doctors do not give the same instructions.

    Problem With Protein Shakes

Me too! I'm doing Greek yogurt and tofu and I feel like a new woman!

    fact or myth confused

0n your plate you should have Protein (fish, meat) which you should eat first. Then veggies next, then any carbs. You can take up to 30 min. to eat. Any liquid counts, even the liquid in your yogurt. That's about what I eat plus I eat a high protein energy bar or yogurt during the day. I'm losing about 3 lbs a week, and if you're sticking to the diet you describe, you will too. After your Dr visit, come back and let us know how you made out. The information I gave is from the Cedars-Sinai hand outs.

    Missing 'real Food" Terribly

LOL! as soon as I started my second week out this last Sunday I had this same freak out moment! I didn't think I would ever be able to eat normal food again! I posted a "Will I ever eat again" topic and got some really good feed back, you should check it out =) I quickly got over this and now I can have cottage cheese, yogurt, etc so I am doing much better. I think the pre and post op liquid diet combined with seeing your family eating (doesn't even have to be bad food, just FOOD!) doesn't help either. I just wanted to chew something so bad Sunday. I have upped my protein and water intake, had to get whey protein "bullets" to help get the protein in. If I have to look at or smell another protein shake... BLECH! the bullets aren't all that much better, they are super sweet and have a weird aftertaste, but they are 43 gr protein in only 3.8oz. which is better than 3 11oz protein shakes daily. I am now on day 11 post op and doing much better! Good luck! You will feel better once this week passes =)
  6. Liquid: Premier protein, unjury powders, syntrax nectar powders (I like variety - and syntrax has some that are more fruity than chocolate, like lemonade and fuzzy navel - they have a trial pack you can buy). Milk (fairlife - more protein), greek yogurt (oikos triple 0 - would think out with milk. Note that some people aren't allowed yogurt on liquid phase) Pureed foods: I made a bunch of this stuff before and froze it: tomato soup, black beans (I just cooked, added some broth, and pureed), pureed sweet potatoes, pureed spinach. cottage cheese, yogurt, hummus, eggs (note, some folks dont do well with eggs at this stage), stuff to make eggface's ricotta bake (google it - ricotta, parm, mozzarella, pasta sauce, egg. I liked to add in some pureed spinach for flavor) Soft foods: tilapia, egg salad, zucchini, green beans, tuna (I tried tuna and it did not work for me, but it does for some. Good luck!

    dumping chicken?

Oh, it's soft and creamy (I added broth and greek yogurt, pureed onions, eggs, zucchini....) it's been fine the first two weeks. I guess today was an 'off' day for me.
  8. Honestly? My suggestion would be to contact your weight loss team and ask them to delay submitting for approval with your insurance for another month. That will give you the chance to adjust to a diet that will get your weight down below where you started off and start some exercise. While I was still waiting to meet my reqs, my diet was one 30g protein shake at 9am, a 20g protein bar at noon, a cottage cheese cup/low-sugar greek yogurt/another protein shake or bar at 4pm, and then 5oz of lean protein and 5oz of veggies at 7pm. I'd generally end up between 1000-1200 calories. For exercise, I would just walk outside for about 30-45 minutes since the gym was not an option. Couple that kind of a diet and routine with delaying submitting to insurance for 4 weeks and you should get back below where you started.
  9. I'm not sure, but I was very lactose intolerant post op and still have a problem if I have too much milk, ice cream, etc. I was able to eat greek yogurt very early out and at first the only whey Protein that didn't make me sick was unjury. My theory -and it's just my thought really - is that the smaller stomach size and less food in to mix around really highlights any intolerances that might have been there pre-op. Lynda
  10. My surgeon doesn't recommend counting calories, just making sure I'm getting 60-70g Protein and 64 oz Water a day. I've been tracking my input with MFP and I'm very curious how many calories other folks are consuming after surgery. Most days I'm between 400-500 calories (basically I have one Protein Drink and two Oikos Triple Zero yogurts a day) and I'm 3 weeks out from RnY.

    Dissapointed...

hey all!! Thanks very much for all your kind words :rolleyes2: The doctor too thought at firs tthat i was eating too much/ wrong foods/ too quickly...but i assured him that i am eating 1 cup of food three times a day as directed by my dietitian, and he said that was small meals so that wasnt it. I took it upon myself (which probably wasnt a good thing to do anyway..) to not move on to the next stage, which is solids because i honestly didnt think i was ready for them...i mean my mushies are quite firm, but im not eating whole chicken or anything like that yet...My diet primarly consists of Yogurt and maybe some grapes in the morning...Lunch is generally fish and mashed sweet potato, and then dinner is generally fish again, or chicken mince, with mashed potato or Pasta...At the moment im struggling to eat things like tomato, carrot, egg, rice (which was expected) umm chicken...but mostly carrot for some bizarre reason... I think i was just in a bad mood after that appt. I realise now that he has done it for a reason, and thanks again for all your support!!!

    Mentally Hungry

The sleeve helps (for a while) with some hunger hormones (ghrelin) and allows you to learn how to use satiety as your pal. BUT we ALL find the mind battles each and every day. I am FAMISHED right now for no reason. So, it's my head. So I go forward step by step and try to make good decisions... Yogurt here I come!!
  13. Greek yogurt with some sf pudding mixed in.
  14. Yep that's dumping. Mild case but it is the same. I've had it happen twice and can say I've lost my taste for sweets altogether. The first time on watermelon and the second time from yogurt that had too much sugar.

    Too Good To Be True?

Yes try Protein drinks...watch out for the sugar and carbs...another is carbmaster yogurt which is available at Kroger...if you have one... low carb and sugar... Also, as you progress, you can apply for free protein/vitamins/scar cream at InsureNutrition.com ... I get it delivered each month...the cream is really light and not greasy, and helped with other scars I have had for YEARS.!!!

    Advice needed- Regaining weight

I understand where you're coming from. I too become hungry when I'm sick (except a stomach virus) and tend to eat more comfort foods and I was sick A LOT this past winter/spring. I'm only 11 months out, but around 9 months I remember one week putting on 5 pounds in about 1.5 weeks. I let myself get into some old habits...one week I ate out everyday and grazed on a lot of snack foods for all my other meals. I didn't gain anything, so I just continued, but the next 1.5 weeks (although I did start to get a little better) I noticed the scale start moving slowly upwards. I cut back on the eating out (completely stopped going out for lunch at work), decided to buy some healthier Snacks (granola bars, yogurt, fruit--as I don't tend to crave these as much and will stop when full), and just started taking more notice of what and when I ate. I decided that if I continued to go up in pounds, I'd go back to low carb and/or measuring foods/counting calories, etc., but really didn't want to feel like I was on a diet. I just tried to do what I thought a "normal" person would do in this situation and it worked. Good luck getting back on track! That's just one thing I love about this tool...it's still there when we need it. Oh, by the way, I too seem to be able to eat a lot more than others mention on here. I also never truly lost my hunger either. So I guess we're all different.
  17. The first week was a real struggle trying to sip water and protein shakes. I'm starting week 3 and, it does get easier, physically and mentally. Take it easy on yourself - get sleep, rest, walk, and keep at the water and protein shakes. I found I was better still on liquids even though I could eat some soft foods (yogurt, pureed chicken, etc.) Solids made me really tired after I ate. I'll add them in next week slowly and see how it goes. hang in there
  18. I know I know....another person complaining... but I'm having a major issue breaking through to the 230s...I've been in the 240s for 3 weeks now....bouncing back and forth 4 pounds.... I need some direction, positive thoughts right now... I'll be 9 months post op March 11th.....and I feel like if I just go on protien drinks and yogurt I can breakthrough, but I really dont want to manipulate my body like that because, well I know I will regret it later.... any thoughts or suggestions

    Third week in

i am feeling so much better! had my first fill (which i posted yesterday as i found some discomfort but today is so much better, and worst case to get the fill out friday as it was feeling restrictive yesterday) but got Yogurt which is easy morning on the go! My Doctor has me on liquids for 2 days after the fill, then to soft foods again for a few more days then to start the transitioning to normal food diet next week which i am so so so excited for!!! I haven't tried pasta again but i did purchase some pulse pasta so i hope that will be better in the next few weeks but craving some proper protein (blending it or having just fish was not the same) It is hard because i don't know anyone who has had this recently (a friend of mine had it and cheated the band and moved to the sleeve, and i met someone in hospital who had the sleeve) so when it comes to these new things it is so hard to turn to places to ask!

    Paleo after surgery?

No yogurt or cottage cheese here. I have not had dairy products since deciding to go paleo ( had cottage cheese up to a few weeks ago and no yogurt since pre surgery). Diet is really earthy( by design) and it is working well so far. I do have energy squares, but these are organic and made with raw foods ( not sure if it qualifies as paleo or not). I cut out Protein bars a couple days ago except Paleo bars. My food hunger is getting so much better after cutting out processed bars.
  21. I'm only 3 weeks out and in the purée stage and it's hard!! Hard to find the tasty purée food that won't make me feel yucky. I'm still eating cream or thick vegetable Soup (no chunk) and Greek yogurt with fuits purée. Only train my stomach with egg or fish once a day because I find it's difficult to get in and I can eat very tiny amount, sometimes is less than 2 tablespoons. Today I tried 2 new things for dinner though, grilled chicken purée with caviar of eggplant, absolutely yummy but still, I cannot finish 1 tablespoon of each.

How much weight did you lose pre-op?

18.3ibs - pure milk and yogurt diet stayed only 8 days before surgery Sent from my SM-A300H using the BariatricPal App
  23. I went in today to see my dr for a regular monthly visit, I'm 10 1/2 mos post op and was expecting a fill but he decided not to do one. He thought since I'm staying satisfied for 4 to 4.5 hrs between meals and an occasional snack of yogurt or low fat string cheese, he thought I was good to go. Although my weight loss has been slow, it's been steady, 2-4 lbs a month. Just now have been able to introduce walking into my journey in the last couple of weeks so hopefully I will see a difference in toning. I totally forgot to mention hair loss to him, sheesh. My hair is thinning, I take Biotin but the last 3 weeks I've noticed it really is thinning out. Had blood work done by my PCP this week and all was normal except Vit D, he increased that. I'm wondering if I'm not getting enough protein. I'm not good at tracking, especially if I cook or make something homemade I'm totally lost on MFP. Now eating out like Wendy's chili (small) or Chick-fil-A grilled nuggets I can pull nutrition facts off internet. Tues I got stuck really bad on a DEVIL food choice, don't judge, i was craving a burger, so I got a Wendy's Jr cheeseburger and brought it home, well, like an idiot took too big of a bite and got stuck BIG time and ended up puking my stomach up it felt like, needless to say I don't want another burger for a long time. Surgeon today said to me and laughed "bet you don't want a burger anytime soon do ya" lol, and I replied NOPE! He seems to think I'm really close to being in the green zone or maybe in it, hope so. If I can increase my activity and exercise I'm praying I will see more weight come off than 2 to 4 lbs a month.
  24. I also wonder about this. I want to know what it feels like when I have to stop. I don't want to go too far. Anybody else find any nutritious fast food things to eat? I was thinking the yogurt parfait from McDonalds would be good too. Sometimes you're hungry and you just gotta get it fast. What I eat (which is not the same as everyone) is 2 tablespoons/meal of pureed something or other or soft food and two Protein shakes for Snacks in between meals. It works out to around 600-700 or so calories/day. Did your doctor give you something to follow?
  25. I've been on mushies for two weeks and I was nervous, too. Here are some of the things I've been eating: sugar free pudding made with a scoop of unflavored unjury Sugar Free pudding (pre-made) Soup at Hand tuna salad and small, soft whole-wheat crackers soy crisps Low-Carb SlimFast refried Beans with melted cheese and cottage cheese or guacamole scrambled eggs broth with chicken-flavored Unjury Laughing Cow spreadable cheese oatmeal I'm not supposed to have fruit or fruit juice for two more weeks or I'd be having applesauce. Yogurt is good at this stage, too. Some of these foods are more of the "soft" variety than "mushie" but I am always sure to chew and chew until they are at least the consistency of pudding by the time I swallow.
