September 11Th Kaiser - Dr. Zane
need2bsleeved replied to need2bsleeved's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Oh congratulations! Where are you having your surgery? Had pre-ops today and met with my doctor. I am a revision and he did say that if the scar tissue is really bad, he would remove the band, but I would have to wait a year to be sleeved. Hoping and praying everything is good and I will come out of surgery bandless, portless, and sleeved! Sunnymama10, are you on a pre-op diet? I was told to continue normal eating until 24 hours prior to surgery. Then it is full liquids and then nothing to eat or drink after midnight. -
I had my band to sleeve revision surgery on 5/23. I am doing well; healing, gaining some energy and progressing well with solid foods, but my weight loss seems extrememly slow, compared to others. I know "compared to others" is the problem and that we are all different and not supposed to compare, but you can't help but notice that some people seem to drop 50-60 pounds in the first few weeks. My SW was 225 and I lost 8 pounds on my two-week pre-op diet.and another 15 since my surgery date. I'm only down a total of 23 pounds. What am I doing wrong?????? Is anyone else who is a band to sleeve revision also experiencing slower-than-expected weight loss?
-
Hi I too am feeling like I am losing slowly. My mom keeps asking me why I am not losing weight, but I have lost. I was 239 before pre-op diet, then I was 126 pre-op and now I am 212. My surgery was on June 2, 2014. When I was banded I started at 280 that was in 2009. I weighed my lowest two years ago after my knee surgery which was 185, I had problems with my band and as you see I was back up to 239 at the time of my decision for the revision. I think as previous band patients we lose bulk of our weight then so when we have a revision it seems to move a lot slower. I feel somewhat discourage but I know what I have to do to make this tool work for me. I afraid of going to work next week and getting all my Protein in as well as eating relaxed and well. good luck

Age, menopausal and under active thyroid
this sucks replied to ovaw8ovathinka's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'm looking forward to joining you on the loosing side too! I am 53, also have hypothyroidism/Hashimoto's and had a full hysterectomy in December of 2014. I'm revising from LapBand to VSG-just waiting on insurance approval/surgery date. I'm hoping that VSG will finally give me the opportunity to get to a healthy weight. I was down to 200 and stayed there for almost three years with the LapBand, but since I started experiencing swallowing issues, my weight has increased back to 235. I'm okay with losing slower, I just want to lose. I have an entire wardrobe of smaller sizes that I can't wear anymore and I really liked the way I felt and could move, etc. You know, they say 50 is the new 30:) -
How did you choose your doctor?
Sharpie replied to semausmom's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
do your research and don't depend on comments from anyone . each person has to make their decision based on how they think they will do. The difference is how drastic you want to go. Lapband is no walk in the park either and unless your are sure you can be pretty compliant you may opt for something else. I did not want to have a radical rearrangement of my intestines or removal of my stomach. My husband had esophageal cancer last year and keeping his nutrition up was a major problem. Had he only had 20% of his stomach I doubt he would have survived. long term thinking is important. Lapband is revisable or removable if necessary. the other surgeries are for life. -
I have learned your body is going to do what it's going to do. I'm 7 months out and am down 45 lbs when a lot of people have already reach goal. I'm also a revision patient, had the band in 2007 and converted to sleeve November 20, 2013. Just stick to the rules and you will lose, slow sometime and sometimes fast. I will give you an example, for the past 3 months I have not done anything as far as weight loss goes, I've bounces around with the same 5 pounds for months. Everyone says after month 6 it slows down and I was really worried because it was already slow but suddenly from month 6 to 7 my weightloss has done the opposite and I'm almost down 10 lbs this month, so everyone is different. Focus on you and your journey, that's what I have to keep telling myself as well because it's easy to compare yourself to others. Best wishes to you!

BMI not Enough for a Revision - Have YOU made Yourself Heavier?
betrthnever replied to betrthnever's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
It is just a pipe dream at this point, anyway, because the insurance company specifically said that I had to be at a 40 BMI for 5 years. I've been reading that the mini gastric bypass is not as expensive in Mexico. That might be the (only) option if I want a revision. -
Band to sleeve - reflux
Nursegirl2803 replied to hopingforamiracle's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hello, I have had the band for 12 years now. I did initially lose 80 pounds but have gained 30 pounds of that back. I have had no fluid in my band for a few years and still suffer horribly from restriction and re-flux, aspiration, heartburn.. list goes on. I have an appt in 2 weeks to see a surgeon who will hopefully take it out. I did find out that my insurance will only cover 1 procedure. So if I am wanting any type of revision then now is the time to do it. I am considering the sleeve but hoping that I dont still have all of the issues with re-flux and heartburn. Let me know how things go. -
Band to sleeve - reflux
SIPS in Seattle replied to hopingforamiracle's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had reflux at the end of my band life because it was too tight and needed to be removed. I'm now starting my 4th post op week with my revision to sips DS and haven't had any kind of reflux or anything similar. Band to SIPS/SA-DI/LOOP DS 8.8.17 HT: 5'6ish HW: 242 SW: 226 CW: 207 GW: Healthy -
Hi Paxie, Some surgeons only offer and promote what they can preform. It does not mean they are not excellent but they have a vested interest in keeping you as a patient Money. Please do your research first. dsfacts.com is a great site. There are 2 surgeons in Mexico on that list neither of which offer discounts. Some times you get what you pay for. I am not implying anything negative just check out all your options. It's your life. Get all of the information you can. With that said. I revised from RNY to DS Dec. 2012. I was considered a light weight (which seems unreal) at 240 and 5'6" and 39 BMI. I now have a BMI that fluctuates between 19 - 20 DS is a very complicated surgery. After care is a life long commitment to supplements and eating high Protein and fat. Not doing so is not an option. But it is a very effective WLS. I am happy with my choice. Make your carefully. Best, Whit

Be careful with bread after bypass is what I have heard. I have eaten a half cheeseburger with the bun and had no issues since my revision to bypass.

Surgery Failure
SleeveToBypass2023 replied to T O P's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Here's my concern with what you just said. If it says 25 carbs, you will drink it. But what about carbs in other things? Are you staying below your allotted carb count for the entire day, or are you counting the carbs based on each individual item and not the entire day as a whole? Your allotted carbs for the entire day are much lower than they were pre-surgery, so make sure you're paying attention to that and staying at or below your carb amount for the whole day. For me, I can't go above 50 carbs for the whole day, but I tend to stay at around 30 for the day. You have to watch the protein, fat, carb, and calorie intake now. My nutritionist said my allowable numbers are: Calories - no more than 500 calories per day (based on being where you're at in the process)m carbs: 50 or less, fat: 50 or less, and protein: 60-90g. I just had my revision, so I'll have to start my process over once I'm done with all liquids, but given the guidelines, there's no way I would ever drink anything that was 15, 20, or 25 carbs per serving. -
Revision From Band To Sleeve With Cigna Insurance
pegsue posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I was wondering if anyone knew does Cigna require a revision to do a Psych. Eval. before approving? When I read the policy requirements for revision it did not say anything about it . The patient advocate told me I needed that before she could file but after reviewing the requirements for revision that is not mentioned? I made an appointment but can't get in until July 30th so long what a drag. Anyway is it really required? -
Revision From Band To Sleeve With Cigna Insurance
bmooney364 replied to pegsue's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I have Cigna and have been approved. I think all you have to have is medical necessity. I did not have to do the psyche eval or much else. My band had slipped and I have gastritis and esophagitis. Pain etc. Wt gain due to fluid removed from band. It took longer to get the Dr. office to send the info to the ins. co than it did for Cigna approval. So far Cigna rocks. I called to see if they had my paper work and I was told they review the request within a day or 2. Revision is totally different from a new surgery because you had to have all that stuff for a lapband and there is really no need to do it all again. Waste of everyone's time and money. Good luck to you. Hopefully you can get approved right away. -
I never had a lap band (I had sleeve) but I have seen a lot of people on here posting with issues and most of them end up having to revise to another procedure eventually. May be worth doing some research if you are having issues.

Hi all! I am in Walnut Creek. I had my surgery done March 3, 2016...just passed my one year mark. Due to some complications from the sleeve, it looks like I'm going to have a revision to an RNY. I'd like to find people to talk to about all this. My husband is wonderful, but he hasn't experienced anything like this, so he doesn't have information or opinions to offer me. If anyone wants to chat, message me!!

Hi - I have to go for 7 monthly visits (1 consult & 6 visits) for a physician supervised nutrition and exercise program (or a dietician). it's stupid really. Like i haven't tried everything under the sun already. I have to "prove" to them that i have been unsuccessful with non-surgical attempts for obesity. Like my weight and health aren't proof enough. It's very discouraging. The part that really sucks is that Tricare doesn't pay for nutrition counseling. This will be out of pocket expense. They will cover everything else but this. You may not have the same criteria as i have though since yours is a revision. I hope not for your sake!

Revision from sleeve to Bypass Sept. 4th
MarinaGirl replied to banksdea's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Good luck with your upcoming gastric bypass!! I hope you’re working on resolving any emotional eating issues as the new surgery won’t prevent you from eating poorly or overeating. It is also common to lose less weight with a revision versus an original surgery. But if you follow recommendations to eat dense protein first then non-starchy vegetables, and to avoid sugar, processed food, simple carbs, alcohol, and liquid calories, you should be successful. This new way of eating needs to be a long term lifestyle change, and not just until you reach your goal weight. You can do this! -
Best Decision I Ever Made.
Travelher replied to nursey10465's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I have mine scheduled on October 4. I'm hoping for a revision to bypass. What my doc said to me is that it depends on the scarring. He said if the scarring is too bad he won't be able to do a bypass because they won't be able to properly close the incision. So I was given 2 options. If the scarring is bad, they will remove and then I'd have to go back later once the scarring reduces or they can do a sleeve in which case they just work around the scar tissue. I've told him to do the sleeve if he can't bypass. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App I'm planning to take, one week and then 1 week working from home. Best Decision I Ever Made.
Steven1954 replied to nursey10465's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I had band removed in February 2016. Weight started coming back just got revised to rny. Weight is dropping Proves if you follow the rules RNY works. Once you have the taste of being normal weight for eight years , it is hard to go back. Best of luck to you -
Chest x-ray anyone?
Tiffykins replied to angel96049's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had a chest x-ray with my band surgery, and with my sleeve revision. It was part of my insurance pre-op lab work requirements. -
Hi Stuck You sound just like so many other bandster, we all start out loving the band and then it fails us. I had my revision just 6 days ago but already I like it so much more. I can actually drink, not sip! I have tried a little bit of food, went right down. To me they are not even in the same boat, the band is always a job! There are many great Dr's throughout Mexico, just do your research. I have been to my Dr twice now and he does a great job. Why would you have the band taken out in the states if you don't mind me asking? As long as you don't have too much damage they will do it all at the same time. I would not want to do the surgeries separate, if you are going to be in there anyway , just get it done!! Good luck on your decision. Bernadette

Okay, I am in my 11th week and down 40 pounds with 15 to go to get at my revised goal of 180. I am at point of slowing down and still making goal somewhere between week 20 and 24. So, to moderate loss to a comfortable level, like to snack on Peanut Butter and a few saltines or an occasional ice cream cone. I know from reading this board I am not alone. So what is your cheat food?

There is a group for lightweights on facebook. I think the surgery you choose depends on you. I agree with what postop said. I had the sleeve, now I'm going through the process of revision. I need the malabsorption. Some people do great with all surgeries, it's about the regain, or the info years out of how much people keep it off after a certain period of time. Also know the surgeon can tailor your common channel limb to match your age, and weight needed to lose with the DS. I have seen people as light and even lighter than you get the DS. It boils down to what you are willing to do. If you can commit to the Vitamins I think it's a great option. If you don't think you need malabsorption then go for the sleeve. You can't always go with how much other people lose because with all surgeries you can be the high average of losing well, and the lower average of losing, and I was at the bottom. GL, research research research.

So since I started this thread, I was diagnosed with a slip, had revision surgery, was unfilled for several months, an bounced back to 200 lbs. Right now I'm at 182 lbs, so time to restart the clock. I'm not sure I even can get to my original goal weight due to the muscle weight, but we will see. All I really know is that I have a pool party with my fellow gym rats on August 16 -- Time to PUSH 17
