    Rant: Sensitive People

(laughing) I do wish that when people post they put how long they've been banded. Fair or not, I would struggle taking advice from anyone with minimal life experience w/ the band. I always warn people to focus on WHO is giving the advice just as much as the advice being given. I'm laughing at this too. Only 10 months here and consider myself a newbie even after reaching goal and a revision under my belt. At a couple months out I thought I knew everything and was giving out advice right and left. I can only hope the people receiving it didn't take it as gospel. Live and learn!

    Random Thought

I'd planned to be secretive about it, just to avoid judgement, but inevitably it seems to have slipped out into the open in mine and my husband's families (we're a talkative bunch, I guess). I've experienced the judgement for sure, along the lines of "Why can't you just do it yourself? Isn't this drastic?" And my response is - I've tried to do it myself for the last 8 years, and it may seem drastic, but it's a tool that I haven't tried yet that seems to be effective. My relationship with food is pretty dysfunctional, and I've been working on that, but I still need this extra ally on my side. I plan on telling folks at work that I'm taking 2 weeks FMLA for the oh so elusive "female problems," but if someone asks me later after I have lost weight, I may share. So far the only person who knows is a woman who had bypass, and she figured it out on her own. I've warned her under pain of office friend exile not to tell anyone else, but we'll see how that goes.
  4. Wow, your insurance is covering a revision when "you don't like your band". Most will only cover it if you have a complication. I don't have any little ones but I know I couldn't have lifted a 14 mth old (about 20 lbs, right?) the first week or so. In fact, my dr had a lifting limit of 20 lbs for the first 6 weeks. In fact, we kept our dog at some friends (a little, energetic one) for 4 days after getting home for fear she'd jump on my tummy. I would definitely have some help there for at least the first week. Then you should be able to do it alone. Good luck to you. I'm happy with my decision to revise. Oops, just noticed you wrote his weight on there. I would definitely get some help if he's over 20 lbs. I know he's walking but I also know how toddlers want their mommy's to pick them up often, especially when they're cranky!

    Failed Almanza Sleeve

when I had my VSG surgery my surgeon discovered that I needed to have my gall bladder out. He said that he would do it after I lost 150# and that he would also "tighten up" my sleeve at the same time. During our initial consulation, when he wanted me to do a bypass, but I was vehemently opposed to it, my surgeon said it was always an option if I didn't lose what I wanted. I read somewhere that initially the sleeve was done as a precursor to bypass for those patients who were too heavy to initially undergo bypass surgery. Because the sleeve can be done easier on super obese patients than the bypass. I'm hoping that I will be successful with the sleeve, as I certainly don't want to have to undergo one of the other WLS's with all their complications.

Revison with Baby when can you lift?

LOL ... I have had TWO bands and mr port replaced. And I never lost more than 25-30 pounds in the 6 years I have had it. I never felt full only stuck so yeah... I hate it. I'm hoping I can replace with revision I know I can find help for 2 weeks but 4 could be harder You don't realize how much you lift a baby ... Until you can't.
  7. Happy1957, thanks so much for posting this. I was coming in this morning and planning on asking the same thing! I hit week 3 yesterday and I haven't lost any weight in 5 days. As a matter of fact, I had gained a pound at the end of last week and when I weighed this morning that one pound was back off. I was soooo discouraged. I am a band revision and had no idea that even a slight gain would be possible after getting sleeved. I too, have been reading about all these people that have already lost 20 to 25 pounds by week 3 and thought that this meant I wasn't gonna have good success. Now to hear that everyone seems to stall like this or have a little gain when transitioning into "real" foods, I feel much better. I guess some of us are just slower losers. I go to the doctor today and hope he tells me I can start exercising. I know this will help me to lose faster and kick my body back into gear!! Thanks everyone! P.S. can someone tell me how to post your weights, goals, and that weight loss ticker tracker so I can post. I just joined and can't fiqure out how to do it!LOL!

Calling all who had surgery in MEXICO

Do you have a lot of weight to lose? Are you a volume eater or a junk food eater or both? The sleeve is a restrictive weight loss surgery (as is the band). The bypass is a restrictive AND a malabsorptive procedure and requires some life long changes. Have you decided which is best for you? Once you decide, it will be easier to make a choice concerning what surgeon is best for you.

  11. Hi. I'm 7.5 months post Bypass and all the sudden I'm miserable. When I eat my stomach instantly bubbles and eventually my bowel starts cramping and I'm stuck on the toilet. If I'm constipated, I'm there until I'm cleared out and liquid diarrhea happens. If I'm not constipated it's just the liquid diarrhea. The catch is I've changed nothing! I'm eating the same foods I've always eaten since 8 weeks post. Low carb high protein. But this happens regardless of intake. It doesn't sound like the symptoms of developing an ulcer which I know can happen around this time. At first I thought maybe I just had a bug. But I'm moving onto the 2nd week of it and have no other symptoms. I eat. My bowels go into hyper drive and I after excruciating cramps I have liquid diarrhea. No new foods. Just new symptoms at almost 8 months post op. Anyone have any ideas what might be going on? I'm at the point now I can't leave the house confidently and I don't want to eat.

    Who's your biggest support?

My partner..he has Bypass surgery years ago but has since regained...so he knows all the "things not to do" and gives me insight on things I didn't get anywhere else but he doesn't pester me if its just a bad day or i make a bad choice eating wise. The biggest thing? He celebrates my victories with me, no matter how small they are and in genuinely happy for me.
  13. Wow first post in the new sub forum. Hey fellow WLS victims....erm.....I mean patients. Butter here....sleever and dispenser of wit and sarcasm and occasional in your face advice. Welcome to the new gigantic all encompassing WLS forum. I for one was a little apprehensive about it, as I thought VST was big enough. Now we're all together...bandsters, bypass patients, sleevers....everyone. So since we're all together now, let's embrace the new dynamic and start bridging the gaps right now...rather than have any "us vs them" barriers. After all, every one of us has the same goals...improved health, weight loss, better quality of life. Our surgeries may be different, but we all recognized that we needed surgical intervention to get there....to save our own lives. In a way, that sets us apart from the mainstream in alot of people's eyes. And I don't know exactly what we should do about that....or even of there is anything to be done to make WLS more socially acceptable. But the least we can do is accept each other...surgical differences not withstanding. After all...if you don't like me, well so be it. There are plenty of reasons not to. But don't let it be because I'm a sleever. Ok....end of morning rambling.
  14. Hi all I had a gastric bypass on the 1st of May and I am in the second week of the pureed food diet, I just thought I would ask a couple of questions to see if all is normal. I cannot really get use to pureeing everything so i have been having broths, cottage cheese, some pureed soups and jelly (Australian version of Jello) When eating at times i can really feel the food slowly going down and most times i get a slight stomach ache after eating for up to 30 minutes, I was getting a little worried as I am about to go onto the soft food diet from Friday and was thinking if pureed foods do this what will courser foods do. How long after surgery did you guys experience this sort of thing and how long does it last before i start to get worried?

    Band to sleeve tomorrow!

I am 8 days PO revision. Feel great, came back to work on Monday, only 5.5 hrs. Very tired when I got home. Actually took a nice baby nap. Now that I can do the Protein shakes, I don't feel so tired. Tomorrow, I get the staples out. Will be asking lots of questions. Still a bit swollen on the left side, which is where they did the most work.
  16. This is a great statement. I just posted on my blog about how I questioned my decision to have the band or bypass. I think I am done with that. I have the band and now I am going work it. I lost a lot of weight before without the band (gained it back) so in theory I should be able to do it again with the added tool.
  17. I think the thing that makes me look at vitamins differently is my two pregnancies. I had bad levels my first one and was so constipated (tmi) from iron supplements I started having contractions.. my second pregnancy I took one that was food based and noticed a dramatic difference. The main difference is vitamins and minerals that are manufactured vs made in nature. And the prenatals are cheaper than the bariatric vitamins my Dr recommend. But any vitamin is better than no vitamin. My mom had bypass 5 years ago and hasn't taken anything in a year and is now dealing with iron infusions and b 12 shots :/
  18. I had band to sleeve revision May 28. I love my sleeve. It is so different than the band. I wish I had done this years ago. My band slipped MAy 2014 they removed all the saline and I gained back 87 lbs of the 100 that I had lost with the band. I am 4 weeks post op today with the sleeve and I have lost 19 lbs. I think it's going to be a slow steady losing pace but I am also learning good eating habits along the way. I also am 50.

    Problem eating meat

I,too, have issues with meat. I don't think it is uncommon. Just like some others I find soup or sauces work better. Sometimes my body just doesn't want meat I guess. Shrimp too irritates my band. Long simmered meats. Stews. Soups pot roasts. We are all learning and I am revising even 7 years in. Good luck
  20. Hi Teresa, I'm not sure where you were banded, or which area you live in. Your band profile says one thing, but your surgeon info says another. I'm across the Sound from you (I think.) Have you asked your surgeon's office about support groups? Some will have their own group, or a counselor you can talk with about things. If you happen to be military, you may be able to ask Madigan Hospital or your primary physician if there are any groups they can recommend in your area. If you're actually in Bellingham, give a call to Dr. Walt Medlin's office - he runs a support group that is open to any bariatric patient. When I attended a meeting last year, it was all bypass patients, but they were very welcoming. If you can't find any place to go to, post your questions here. There are lots of folks at LBT who have been right where you are. Don't be afraid to ask for assistance. After I was banded I had a period when I was wondering what the heck I'd done to myself. I was sore and feeling pretty sorry for myself. I could only drink a little bit of Fluid at a time, and I was feeling pretty much on my own. I was mourning the loss of being able to eat like I had pre-surgery. But I had read about so many band success stories, I knew I had to just dig in my heels and follow through with the plan I'd started for myself. Within a few weeks my discomfort was gone, I was back to eating real food (from a bandster's perspective,) and I was up and around like normal. My biggest life journey had finally gotten started. And I have never looked back. Six months later I am well down the road toward my goal, and I am absolutely delighted. Nothing I have ever done for myself has been as rewarding. Hang in there. It does get better. Good luck! Dave

    Scared...advice please

I had RNY gastric bypass surgery over 3 years ago. Overall I lost almost 120 pounds total (20 pounds pre-op and 100 pounds post-op) I now fall in the normal BMI category. Many of my health conditions (high blood pressure, diabetes, sleep apnea, severe acid reflux) have gone into remission and stayed there. I consider the surgery to be one of the best decisions that I ever made.
  22. Hi I've just found out I'm finally on waiting list and should be getting sleeved around October time , I am very nervous I've never had surgery before ,also surgeon wanted me to have bypass because I'm type 2 diabetic but I'm hoping I will still get good results with sleeve ? Any one had sleeve long term have you managed to maintain weight loss and keep diebetics at bay ? And then theres the GERD / acid issues please tell me it doesn't happen to everyone ,also what is the average weight losses with sleevers I'm currently about 17 stone size 18 wondering what I would average out at I know it differs slightly but just a rough idea xx p.s I'm UK and UK buddies about. 😃

    Microbiology research questions

That is quite good to know (the pushing of a yogurt rich diet). Depending upon the brand and such, they can have an extremely varied microbe content. I suppose an interesting test would be to break down post surgical success based upon which yogurt brands (and in turn, which microbes) lead to the most desirable outcome. That experiment would be much further down the line however LOL. Speaking with my mother, she remembers being pushed into an extremely high protein diet post bypass, and told to avoid fruits and vegetables. I had forgotten that fact. Thanks for the insight, Brad We are all encouraged to eat a high protein/low carb diet. Yogurt is a great option immediately post op because of it's soft consistency. Some of us are even allowed it in the "liquid" phases. It remains a good option later on as well, due to its high protein content and low carbs/sugar. Another thing that might be interesting to explore is the prebiotic Fiber content of many high Protein Bars. Many use isomalto-oligosaccharides and a major brand, Quest, just switched to soluble corn fiber. I was an avid Quest Bar eater until the switch and my gut bacteria definitely didn't take the switch well. I became HORRIBLY bloated and flatulent. I couldn't even be in the same room with myself it was so bad. I had to switch to another brand that was still using isomalto-oligosaccharides.
  24. Hi Everyone: For me this journey started when I went to the doctor in February 2017 about fixing my hiatal hernia. I have lived with the Heidel hernia for more than 10 years but lately it was giving me problems and impacted my quality-of-life. The surgeon I went to (who would eventually do my gastric bypass) let me know that he could fix the Heidel hernia but that unless I lost a significant amount of weight it would return. So here I am 6 days out from surgery and healing well. Greatest Challenges: Finding a good sleeping position that lasts for hours. Gas pain in shoulders. Greatest Accomplishments: No vomiting, able to do 4oz of Protein shake, teas, water, popsicles. Consistently staying hydrated and I love the taste of my vitamins. [emoji23] I hope to continue to share my journey with you all. I am thankful for this new lease on life and plan to take full advantage of it. Destroy tissue around Band

A friend of mine went to MX to get the sleeve. She met a gal at the hospital that had the band and wanted it removed and a revision to a sleeve because she was not losing weight. When the surgeon went in to remove the band, he said there was no way he could do a sleeve, as the band had done damage to her stomach that was not repairable. She ended up with no band, and no revision surgery.
