Can a Icee stretch your pouch
Ele marie replied to Tmitch817's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Vsgamn2014 funny I felt the same about you. I listen to my doctor it gets air into your pouch. You didn't even have gastric bypass you have the sleeve. And I do know it is easier to cheat on the sleeve not saying you will. I'm not saying you can't use a straw ever but not at the beginning. And I just had surgery and classes so I know more than you think. Anyway. I am answering her question. Please leave me out of your Know it all. Wannabe Dr BS. I respect that you had surgery before me but we do not even have the same surgery. Thanks BTW my sisters had surgery before you and they don't act like they know everything. I'm soooo proud of you! I know how hard it is as I have struggled with my weight most of my life. I have also found pictures to be the best motivator and comforter when the scale isn't moving fast enough. You should be so proud of yourself bc I can definitely see the difference! I am 48, and have been overweight and unhappy about my weight since my mid-20's....when I had my children at age 25 and 28, I didn't have my photo taken holding them in my hospital bed after their births, BC I didn't want my children to look back and be embarrassed that I was fat......I never swam with my children at a public pool, and when we went to the beach I pretended I just wanted to read, not swim.....I once went to an amusement park with my daughter and the safety belt snapped on me halfway through a roller coaster ride (I could have killed her or me or both)......every milestone in my children's lives I have hidden in the back of the photos promising myself that the next Girl Scout camping trip, the next ski vacation, the next middle school graduation, the next prom, the next college drop off....THEN I would be 100 pounds lighter BC I would finally buckle fine and get serious and beat this thing. The next one never happened the way I wanted. I think you're making the decision I wish I had made when I was in my 20's. Don't let anyone tell you what's right for you. Fed BCBS, BMI 38/39, None of the top 4 comorbidities for insurance approval
MeFirst replied to HopefulInVirginia's topic in Insurance & Financing
I have BCBS Fed and was approved within a week of submission a couple months ago. In my experience, your BMI must be 40 or higher on your initial weigh in with surgeon. Wear heavy clothes, stuff your pockets, etc.... The 2 year weight history has to be an obese weight history (over 35 BMI). As long as you have a weight for each year for the past 2 years that is above BMI 35, you should be fine. I had no comorbidities, a BMI of barely 40 at first weigh in (thanks to a full bladder, keys, cellphones, jeans. Lol), and an over 35 BMI for the prior 2 years. Good Luck!!! -
Thanks guys. He called today to set up our first couples counciling session (2 weeks), he also set up his individual counciling as I did mine. I should clarify that he isn't trying to say his actions are my fault, but he still think his emotional state was my fault. Which is call BS, because it wasn't so bad I saw abything. He was playing happy at home. It's complicated. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G900A using Tapatalk

Low BMI Gastric Sleeve story
silverthreads replied to lady10000000000's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
@@Seastars -- thanks for that excellent article. The chart posted there should be made widely available on this site (but I don't know how to do that!) as it's very helpful. Let me make one small correction lest anyone be confused -- you (and others) talked about "Medicare" covering bariatric surgery and being run jointly with the states. That's "Medicaid" (often confused). Just to be clear: Medicaid is a program for lower income people. It is jointly funded by the Federal and State government -- and is run by each state under agreements with the Feds. The name also varies from state to state -- so some states have come up with a clever name (California's program is called "Medi-Cal" -- which unfortunately is often quoted as "medical" which confuses things) while some others just call it "Medicaid" "Nevada Medicaid" etc. Covered services under Medicaid do vary from state to state -- states must cover the basic list given by the Feds but can add programs, etc. at state cost. Medicare is a purely Federal program (for people 65 and older, disabled persons and those with qualifying diseases like kidney failure or ALS) and the benefit package is supposed to be the same everywhere -- it isn't regulated by the states at all. In actual fact there can be some small differences in coverage regionally because of something called Local Coverage Determinations which can vary a bit, but that's too esoteric to get into here. You can possibly have both Medicaid and Medicare -- if you are low-income and over 65 or disabled. Medicare does cover bariatric surgery -- but the key is it has to be determined "medically necessary" -- so there are likely requirements similar to those in the commercial insurance world (determined by the regional Medicare Administrative Contractor or MAC if you have Original Medicare or by your Medicare Advantage plan if you have a managed care plan). The bottom line for all the rest is that health insurance is regulated by the states, so requirements vary -- both for the exchange ("Obamacare") plans and commercial insurance. Medicare is the only coverage that is not governed by the state where you live. -
Low BMI Gastric Sleeve story
Seastars replied to lady10000000000's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Yeah, Medicare nationally approves Bariatric surgery, but subject to state regulation. (Medicare is a combined fed/state program.) So each state decides for itself, and about half - mostly in the north and west - won't cover it. The exchange (Obamacare) and most private insurance plans follow suit. Crazy. But that's why many of the Americans on here who talk about insurance, are from the southern states. -

BariatricBetty24 replied to LoveMyBypass's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thank you for the information Onmica. How did your consult go today? Did I you get your surgery date? I just got an email saying that the lab requests are in and to get them done. Luckily I don't have to get on BC as my husband had a vasectomy last year. My Options classes are done June 15 and I would love to have the surgery by the July 15 - pretty sure that's going to be impossible. I teach and have to go back to work August 15. I don't want to miss the start of the school year. But I'll go wherever I can the surgery done the soonest. I'll be so happy if I can get sleeved by August 1. I meant, "Did YOU get your surgery date?" -
Dr. Vishal Mehta - Dr. Vishal Mehta

I know this is old but I had Mehta. I love him plus he's sexy as hell! I guess that helps that he isn't the most upbeat guy. He's straight and to the point and I like him like that. He doesn't mess around and he doesn't lie just to get your money. My band slipped bc I had a local dr to me(PA) doing my fills and once I felt I was too tight, he didn't want to take any out bc he said I was doing so well. No crap, I was throwing everything up. I'm getting re-banded on Monday and will go to Vishal only for my fills. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App and LuLu is so great! @@CourtneyLouise - Did you get the name of who you spoke to and when? I would call them and provide that info, especially if you went months without a bill and then got one again. I have BCBS fed and went to LabCorp and was fortunate enough to have that type of info and LabCorp wrote off the charges (over $1400). I specifically asked the woman did they take BCBS Fed and she said yes - I had her name and date/time I spoke to her. Apparently BCBS Fed goes back and forth every couple of year between taking LabCorp or not taking them. The OM said the check in person should have told me otherwise because they supposedly verified my coverage.

Those who drink diet pop post-op {Only nice comments PLEASE}
FocusOnMeNow replied to Beck90's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
I also have never heard anyone say their doc was ok with it, but maybe I will if I finish reading this thread? What I have heard tho from post ops is that even when they tried to drink it months-years out it hurt. You should be aware that I had a similar stance on caffeine, but I actually did follow my doctors advice and didn't even try it until the 9th week (he told me no caffeine for 8 weeks). What did I find? That my poor sleeve could barely tolerate it. I did about 1/2 cup of chai tea diluted with 1/2 cup of vanilla protein shake bc I could certainly not tolerate any coffee. I could not even tolerate a half and half coffee mixture for several more months. Moral of the story....99 times out of 100 your doctor is recommending something for a valid medical reason. Also you might find that you don't even want or need or even like the same things post-op as you did pre-op. An example is that I loved chocolate shakes and never wanted a different flavor pre-op, but when I went to have my first post-op protein shake I couldn't even phathom a chocolate one. I just craved plain vanilla. I'm 9 months out and still have a ton of chocolate protein shakes in both ready to drink and powdered form sitting around my house which I will probably never drink. I myself was an absolute Diet Coke fiend pre-op. I was willing to give up the food. I was willing to give up the alcohol. BUT when they told me I had to give up caffeine, I resisted A LOT. I thought it was silly and unreasonable but it wasn't. It was totally legit. Long story short...you need to realize that you are possibly addicted to soda which is why you don't want to give it up. You need to make a commitment to taking care of yourself and your new sleeve. You may find that once you wake up from surgery you have a LESS THAN ZERO desire for diet soda. More importantly please try to hold out for as many weeks as you can because all that carbonation could literally pop open your new tummy if you try it too soon post op. I did not mean for this to be a lecture. I just wanted to share my experience with you and ensure that you weigh the potential benefits (I personally don't see any) vs the potential risks in your own decision making process. Good luck!
