Wow...I didn't even know this existed...
Michelle_74 commented on Michelle_74's blog entry in Michelle_74's Journal
It's awesome. I've been wanting to document my bumpy journey of weight loss, but just didn't know where to start or even where to go. I was banded on March 12th, and so far I have lost 17 pounds. Most of it was lost during the liquid stage and once I went on solids, that's it...neither the scale nor the inches have dropped. I have to wait until May 16th for my first fill and until then I promised myself I would do everything in my power to lose some more wieght. Right now I am concentrating on going from 245 to 240. I will set my goals at 5 pound increments as opposed to 100lbs like I always do, and always fail. I have purchased an elliptical and have done cardo 3 times a week. I have also gone to the gym and donecircuit training 2 a week. However, my weight has not moved. There is no way that uscle has taken over the fat yet because there hasn't been enough time...So, i joined weight watchers to control the amount of food I eat (there is no way I can count calories, I just suck at it). With weight watchers I count my points and stop at the max. I've been doing this for the past 3 days. I'm going to give it my all! I will lose this damn weight! Today I ws not very good. I didn't eat enough. I only had 2 meals:breakfast and dinner. For breakfast I had milk, 2 slices of turkey, 1 slice of ww rye bread. For dinner I had 2 shrimp, some broccoli and carrots. Now I made myself a turkey sandwich with lettuce and had a protein shake. If I get hungry later I'll have some strawberries. I walked for about 20 minutes at the mall, I vaccuumed the house, and washed the floor...Tomorrow I need to get at least 20 minutes of cardio. TaTa...Until tomorrow... -
You have to consume more calories than that. Even if you aren't hungry; drink a few Protein shakes a day. You can screw up your metabolism by starving yourself. Your hunger will return but if you stay positive if won't be as bad as some people whine about.

6 months post op and gaining? :(
Cheeseburgh replied to Tejee's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Are you tracking calories? It sounds like you’ve increased too much and have to cut back. At 6 months I was eating 600-800 calories a day. -
6 months post op and gaining? :(
Tracyringo replied to Tejee's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I would stay away from protein bars personally . They pack as many calories as a candy bar and can be addictive to some. You know yourself better then anyone though. I was eating on average 800 calories at 6 months out. Breakfast. 1 egg and either turkey sausage or 2 slices of bacon ( I still eat this today ) Lunch. tuna creation pouch and 1/4 cup of cottage cheese Dinner. 1 rib and part of a baked potato with cheddar cheese ect. Snack. Almonds This is just one day I had logged in my 6 months. Most of the time I could not finish a meal and would go back and finish later instead of snacking on other things. -
Will I feel light headed or jittery from not eating enough
honk replied to girlpokerchamp's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am preband. I also have had episodes where I am so hungry and blood sugar has fallen (not diabetic) where I get light headed and feel faint. This however really only happens when I have not eaten for like 7 hours; which really is pretty stupid on my part. True, this is usually due to scheduling issues at work or being on vacation and not having ready access to food. I am pre band and am on a pretty strick self imposed diet around 1,000 cal. a day. I do an hour of cardio a day. I do try to keep my blood sugar steady by having a high Protein low fat/calorie snack late afternoon (greek yogurt, chicken, string cheese). My surgeon does not really believe in the low blood sugar thing but I know it's true. My regular size sister has the same problem as did my father. -
Do you measure your food with a cup or a scale?
JulieNYC replied to derbygirl's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Fluid ounces (measuring cup) and solid ounces (scale) aren't the same thing. They're a completely different unit of measure. I think (pulling from high school science, so I could definitely be off) that the only thing that has the exact same fluid and solid measure is Water -- i.e. 8 fluid ounces of water does indeed weigh 8 ounces on a scale. But if the thing you're measuring is denser than water, 8 solid ounces is going to take up less space than 1 cup (imagine meat). Likewise it the item is less dense than water, 8 solid ounces will take up much more than a cup (imagine coolwhip). When diet references say eat "3 oz" of Protein, for example, they're talking about solid (scale) ounces because solids are measured in solid ounces not in fluid ounces. That said, my pouch can't handle more than about 1 or 1.5 cups of any food at a given time (i.e. 8 or 12 fluid ounces, even if we're measuring solids). Contrary to what some do, I do measure a lot of my food. Not everything, but a lot. For example, this morning I ate cottage cheese for Breakfast. If I spooned it out without measuring it, I'd probably eat a cup. A serving is 1/2 cup and I'm satisfied on 1/2 cup, so I measure it out. if I want more, I get more, but that way I'm accountable to myself. I find weighing and measuring things to really help my weight loss because for me, my body is almost perfectly "calories in calories out." If I track my calories, I lose weight. Find what works for you with measuring or not. -
Who is pre-op and who is post op?
WeeWers replied to WeeWers's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Lisha, What a great attitude you have about the slow start. It's mathematically impossible for you to have such a drastic reduction in calories -- and not lose all the weight you want. I'm routing for you! warmly, WeeWers -
So today's weight is.... 338.4. It went up by 2.2 pounds within 24 hours. As many of us on this site probablly knows that when we lose weight our body does strange things. I know for sure that I haven't over ate or binged for that matter. I decided to weigh in daily to "scientifically" track my weight loss by logging my food intake based on calories and content. what I've come to realize is that, for me, what I enjoy right now isn't good for me even in small portions. Basically put, I need to avoid heavier carbs at the present time because they seem to want to stick to me like glue. 63 days and counting It's a lovely day and I'm feeling good!!!!

Great to hear from you...I LOVE my band and if I could ever follow a diet and/or exercise regimen long term why would I need a lap band!? So many people on here are exercising like fiends and counting every calorie...and I just keep my band tight and eat less...I am too old and lazy for all that! Thanks for friending me...

Can Eat Everything
Robyn Owens-Miille replied to Skyjack1's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
If you're 5 weeks out and you've lost 24 pounds but been stuck for 2 weeks, that means you lost 24 pounds in 3 weeks. You are doing great! Your body has hit the "3 week stall." It is simply in shock by the amount of calories you have cut from it. The average weight loss is 4 lbs a week so you're still doing good even with your stall. Keep eating right and exercising and I promise, all of the sudden, you will start dropping the weight again. Most of us here have been in the same place. But, as the prior posts said.... don't go off plan. This is the time to be establishing new habits that you will stick with for the rest of your life. -
Here's my quandry. So if we are counting calories and protein and fat, sugar, etc., what actual 'role' does the band play? Is it that it shrinks your stomach so you get full faster? Sometimes I feel like if I had stuck to all of these guidelines to begin with, why did I need the band. I'm not trying to be negative here, I'm really asking. How do you feel the lap band is different from all the other programs we've tried?

My first week (23rd Jan) was pretty rough in a way... Had the op, all went well there...but when i woke up in my hostpital room post-op i immediately felt super-hot....i was just sweating like crazy and they ran and got me a fan but the hot feeling made me sick....i dry heaved a couple of times quite hard which scared me so soon after op.... That pulled a muscle in my stomach so for the next 4 day i just couldn't lie flat...but the actual diet/stiches (ok, had glue rather than stiches) were fine. The gas pains lasted about a week - 10 days for me ... but some days i felt pretty ok, some i felt rough...walking helps...even very slowly...just the movement seems to help dissipate the gas around the system. 4 weeks on, i feel perfectly normal...might even go and play badminton this weekend...scars are about 95% healed and i've lost a fair amount (although none this week due to switching to mushies and i think i went a little mad on calories wise) Looking forward to week 8 first fill During the 1st 4 weeks the diet has been about 90% ok...i've had a couple of days where i felt really down and just wanted to not eat liquid anymore ... but that passed and my wife forgave my very nasty mood

I like plain ole Richard Simmons food Mover. You eat the food you normally eat (with better choices, of course) and close the windows as you do. It helps me do several things: get my dairy and fruits in every day, don't go over on the carbs, keep up with my Water, plan ahead. If I want a snack, I see what I have left for the day and it helps me choose better. Also, there are several cards for calorie counting...1000, 1200, 1400, 1600, 1800, and 2000 calorie cards. If you wanted to do high protien, just open and extra protien window and close a carb window or two...you get the pic. I'll admit, I do it every day for 4-5 days faithfully and then I have a broad idea of what to choose and I do better for weeks. I haven't moved a window in months and it's showing on a slow moving scale. For me, it's good direction, accountability, no menus and crazy food prep, low calorie, low fat, adjustable. Richard Simmons rocks! And you could probably get one used on e-bay for cheap cheap cheap.

How far post op are you??? I had wine about 2 months post op, the alcohol has not affected me either way. My surgeon said you "could" get durnk easily but for me nothing has changed. Just be careful and I would try alcohol at home first to see how you will react. You don't want to try something new for the first time out of you house. Just remember that alochol has lots of empty calories.

I feel ya. I have to do a lot of small meals. I also add yogurt and fruit to my protein smoothies to get more calories.

Ok... Had my first preop Dr. Apt yesterday and while I was happy that iv lost weight (10lbs in 2 weeks since surg) I'm not ecstatic about it. I expected more since I was on liquids for 2 solid weeks. My NUT and Dr said I probably would have lost more, but I'm not getting nearly enough calories in. So basically my body has shut down and is refusing to lose at a more rapid pace because I'm only able to get in 300-500 cal a day. AND to top it off, my doc said no gym until I get my caloric intake up. WTH So I guess my real question is, can anyone suggest high calorie meals that's aren't huge? NUT said it looks like I have a very tight sleeve, so it will be harder for me. Right now I can only consume about 1/2 an egg or 4 bites of cream of wheat or 1/4 a yogurt cup. Obviously not much at all. I'm just scared that if I don't start being able to consume more that my weight loss will not progress. I'm ready to get in the gym. I was sleeve as a tool, not to have it as a crutch. Sleeve Date: March 28, 2013 Weight on surgery date: 281 First Goal 50lbs: July 13, 2013 (231)

See I'm a grazer with healthy foods. I get chips and dip like once every 6 months. I never eat fast food I don't eat fried food. I graze on cherry tomatoes, carrots, celery, fruit, pickles, 100 calorie cookies. I only eat fat free or super low fat ice cream but rarely. I loveeee to cook and bake but dont really eat what I bake. But still I can't lose weight.

Bander here so I may be offering non applicable advice... No carbonation - anytime that I've had a beer, I've had to ask for a straw too to swirl it around to reduce the carbonation. Oh how I miss my beer sometimes. If I'm 'desperate' for lack of a better word, I'll have a sip or two without any problems of my fiancé's beer. Carbonation now is just quite painful. Hurts up in my shoulder area. I'll drink wine and sometimes mixed drinks like a mojito or sangria. Again, need to be careful of those bubbles. Yes they are empty calories but it's an enjoyable part of life. Wine is even healthy for you in moderation. I still keep a log of my calories when drinking. I'm definitely more of a light weight. I'll feel nauseated a lot quicker too so be careful. You're not eating as much, less food in the stomach to slow it down, you're not drinking as much overall (daily/weekly) and you've lost weight - all factors that contribute to your diminishing tolerance. Be careful, don't plan on driving and have fun.

My doc said the same thing, except on fill days. He says you get calories and protein, but they go right through the band and aren't as filling. So, you end up being hungry again soon. The day of my last fill (he requires 24 hours of liquids only), I noticed this to be true. I'd have a protein drink and be hungry a couple of hours later.

About to be banded in Plano, Texas
mbsbike2002 replied to mbsbike2002's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi Clara Mae, My doctor didn't require a pre-op liquid diet; however, I started a voluntary one about a week before surgery. During that week, I lost about 8 pounds, and my blood sugar was well under control. BG control was important to me, since poor BG control can slow healing. Amazingly, since surgery, my blood sugar hasn't been over 120, and I haven't had any insulin since the day of surgery. Guess it can't get too out of control with only a few hundred calories a day! Good luck on you pre-op diet, the 27th will be here soon! B -
I am so pleased to hear that you are doing well! Keep hydrated and walk over anything else. It will make your recovery easier. I am only 6 days post op myself, and I am finally taking in about 300 calories. However, make sure even over eating that you drink, drink, drink! It will help clear out everyting. Including the adverse effects of the antibiotics if they gave them to you via IV. I am so pleased for you! Please keep us updated with your recovery! Welcome to Bandland! Autumn
