Protien - how do you get it in?

I just got started on soft foods yesterday and I had a bit of mashed potatoes with some salt, pepper, and butter. SOOOOO FILLING, so delicious, and it got me A LOT closer to my carbohydrate and calorie goal. I still am not eating enough to get my goal but getting closer every day. I go for HIGH CALORIC beverages to try and get the calories I need. Once you get on soft foods, try the Chick-fil-a chocolate milkshake with NO whipcream or cherry (bad for us), throw two scoops of Protein powder and some skim milk in... one of those lasts me for two days but it's a great way to get TONS of protein (because of the powder and all the milk), it tastes DELICIOUS and it gets me some fat and calories. Keep in mind, once we can eat, that'll be bad, but for now, it's AWESOME to get us closer to our goal nutrition.
  2. Protein shakes aren't magic, they're calories just like any other food. Don't worry about trying to afford them if it's too hard right now, stick to cheaper sources of protein. FWIW, I have never drunk them, I lost 120% of my excess weight and have kept it off for five years.

    Skinny Cow

I actually have a major sweet tooth. I'm 6 months post-op and enjoy fiber one bars. They are only 90 calories. I've tried both the brownie and chocolate peanut butter bar

    5 days post op

I slept propped up in my loveseat because I don't have a recliner. It worked well. I had to do it for about a week before I could sleep in my bed. As for the fluids and protein, that's likely the reason you're feeling off. Also, you may not be getting enough calories. Try to drink protein shakes and protein water, that way you can at least get your fluids and protein in at the same time.

    Yogurt?

Dannon light & Fit 80 calories, greek yogurt.. low sugar good protein. a variety of flavors.
  6. Hello Sleevers, I weighed myself in the am and was 238. Yay!! 10 pounds in 8 days. Now I weigh myself this evening and I'm 240. I'm only drinking Protein shakes and a half cup of Soup for lunch. Total calories is about 470. I'm also walking at a brisk pace for an hour for exercise. It's not the calories. The only thing diffrent today was that I managed to get about 58 ounces of Water down. So, I think this could be just water weight and it will all work it's way out eventually. Has anyone else had or seen this?

    back on track and breastfeeding?

I have been breastfeeding through the entire surgery process. Liquid diet, post-op diet, etc. all of which is very low calorie, sometimes only 500. The pediatrician and lactation said that as long as I am drinking enough water (64oz+/day) I will produce milk as normal. And guess what they were right! No dip in supply. It's a myth that you need extra calories to breastfeed. The fat composition of your milk may change but baby should be fine. Good luck!

    Crazy "sweet spot" question....what next?

The monthly visits are very important, whether you're losing weight or not. The doctor wants to monitor your progress. Too much weight being lost, they're going to unfill you a little bit. I know that might horrify some of you, but I lost a lot of hair during my 100 lbs fiasco that scared the bejesus out of me because I ate terribly, nothing nutritious, mashed potatoes loaded with butter and southwest eggrolls...but I kept losing because my restriction was so tight. Fortunately I have a lot of hair and it wasn't noticeable except when I wore black suit jackets...but I put a stop to that by going vegetarian and following the blood type diet, which is the last regimen I will ever need! If you are not losing fast enough, they'll bump you up a little. I could swear the thinking at my doc's office was: 1. Fill - liquids 2 days (lose weight) 2. Mushy foods 2 days (lose more weight) 3. Solid/regular...which makes you maintain for another 3 - 4 weeks til next follow up. Like clock work, 4 - 8 lbs a month. I always lost the most during fill time and then it was just my body dealing with the lost fat. Then my body would be like "OK...lord...we can survive with those 8 lbs, I just made the adjustments, we should be able to hang on to calories again!" and then I thwart it with another fill :wink2:
  9. Hey everyone! I am about two months post op with my surgery date having been 08/31. I had the gastric sleeve surgery and on the date of surgery I was 358. Currently I am 330 and have been losing weight VERY slowly. My goal weight is 160-180 so I have quite a long way to go. Has anyone else experienced this? Are there any tips on how to ramp up the weight loss or any meal plans to help keep calories in check so I am not eating more than medically advised? Thank you Sent from my SM-N975U using BariatricPal mobile app
  10. For me at 8.75 months out it is very possible to eat the wrong foods. It is not stomach hunger but I have now learned why I eat when I shouldn't be. Now I am at my goal weight so if 90-95% of the time I eat healthy I do have treats or cheat foods if you like. This is definitely a journey and changes month to month. My best advise is to stick with the low calorie/low carb diet during the weight loss phase; this worked extremely well for me. You can do this, set your mind to being a success and you will!!

    Starvation Mode

Does anyone know how long it takes for your body to get out of starvation mode? What happens when you go from 600 calories a day to 1,000 calories a day? Do you gain weight immediately then taper off? Thanks, LynnAnn

    Protein Help????

I use unjury chocolate splendor. It's really good... I mix it with unsweetened almond milk. Recently discovered almond milk and it's half the calories of skim milk. Works good in coffee too!
  13. Absolutely no regrets. I have an excellent doctor I've been seeing since 1981. He told me a year ago that diabetes was kicking in and I should consider RYGB. I decided to try one more time and put myself on 1200 calories a day. In a year I gained 30 pounds. I had to prove to myself I couldn't beat it by being stubborn (a family trait). Preparing for surgery was actually easier than usual because I was paying for everything myself and didn't have to deal with insurance companies. Within days of the surgery I was off diabetes meds, and every time I test it my blood sugar is normal. I'm down 50 pounds and am feeling better than I have in years. I'm over 60, and I decided I was not going to spend the next 20 years in a 400 pound body. Now I have lots of plans, projects and goals, and a good shot at making them.

    Frustration With Protien

I can't drink the Protein shakes with milk any more. It took me about 2 weeks to be able to drink a protien drink in under 3 hours. I started drinking 2 ounces, putting it back in the fridge, coming back 30 minutes later and drinking more until it was all gone. I have developed a distaste for them. I started drinking the Isopure zero carb Protein Shakes from GNC. I can drink plain milk, but the taste of the protein is intolerable. I also can not drink plain Water. It actually turns my stomach and causes pain. I talked to the surgeon and he suggested mixing up the Protein drinks with more variety including ice cubes in the blender, Peanut Butter or a bit of a bananna. He gave me a list of about 50 variations to try and suggested citrus or cukes in the water to change the make up enough. I am 32 days out from surgery now and have found that if I don't drink the protein I don't lose. I haven't lost a pound in 3 weeks because I wasn't getting enought calories. I also started using a straw eventhough it is not suggested because if helps.

    Do you fear "re-fatting"?

Yes. I am just focusing on more veggies and fruits, and less animal protien. I know, I know - but no. A year later I am living a near-vegan lifestyle and I am fine without tons of animal protien. Better. Muscle mass is amping up. My pants size is smaller than my shirt size, due to my shoulders and across my chest (not boobs, chest). I have alot of excess skin, but you can see the definition below it now. The muscle counters the calories, and the balanced foods allow my body to use the vegtable protien optimally.

HELP! Samples meals need, I'll Start

Great idea OP, thanks for starting it! Breakfast I am a creature of habit when it comes to breakfast for the most part its 1 or 3 meals! 1. 1 pckt sugar free oatmeal (Walmarts Brand) and half a scoop of banana flavored Protein mix 2. 1 scrambled egg with 2% cheddar cheese mixed together with about 3 strawberries on the side 3. 100 calorie wheat/high Fiber english muffin toasted, I then cut up a boiled egg with about a tsp low-fat mayo and have an egg sandwich. I can only eat about 2/3's of it but its a great change to the oatmeal! lunch I eat a lot of the South Beach pre-package meals since its easy to take to work with me I also like to do cottage cheese with strawberries and a few slices of organic turkey breast deli meat with no fillers (Nature's Promise brand is the best) dinner Once a week I make a batch of meat-free chili that is so good. 1 can of black Beans 1 can of pinto beans 1 can of red kidney beans 2 cans of fat-free chicken broth 1 packet of spicy chili seasoning 1 can of fat-free refried beans 1 can of fire-roast stewed tomatos drain and rinse all of the whole beans, mix all the ingreds together, except the refried beans, let it simmer for about 30 minutes then add the refried beans to thicken the chili. Or if you don't like thick chili you can leave out the refried beans all together. Also if you must have meat try adding 93% fat free all white turkey breast meat to it. Another favorite meal is taking chicken breast and grilling them (I use my George Foreman) then dice them up...in a large skillet add about a TBS of olive oil and throw in some summer squash, onions, mushrooms and zucchini after the veggies are tender throw in the chicken and add about 1/4 cup of fat free terryika sauce...serve over couscous. My entire family loves this meal. Other then that my meals look like everyone elses! Good luck! Can't wait to get some other goods ideas!

    What Are Your Favorite Things?

These are a few of my favorite (weight loss) things: 1. My iPod Shuffle. I love, love, love to listen to music that makes me want to move my body. I actually make excuses to go to the gym just so I can put my headphones on and get lost in the music while I'm on the elliptical. 2. My Polar heart rate monitor. It's a basic unit, but it's really all I need to keep my heart rate in the training zone. I don't like to exercise without it. 3. My Spinning shoes. Spinning is my favorite exercise, and somehow just putting them on says "Athlete" to me. 4. Kashi Go Lean Crunch Cereal. I have it every single day for Breakfast, and absolutely crave it. 9g Protein, 8g Fiber per 1 c. serving for 190 delicious calories. 5. Breakstones 2% large curd cottage cheese. That's my favorite post-workout snack. It's creamy and delicious, and packs in 11g protein in 90 calories. 6. Edamame. I love the frozen pods (which remind me of one of our southern staples, boiled peanuts), and the wasabe-flavored freeze dried ones. 7. My local lap band support group. We have an awesome bariatric coordinator, who does a wonderful job to get us inspired and motivated. Tami

    What Are Your Favorite Things?

My favorite things: My Kippy belt - I can wear it now that I've lost weight, I love it and it has so much bling bling to it. My Cruel girl jeans - low rise hipster, I can wear them now that I have the Lap Band I love the Elliptical machine, it has helped me lose weight, burns calories, and just makes me feel good when I'm on it. My favorite quick meal on the run - Edamame Beans - soy beans, just 1/2 cup contains 10 G Protein. Great snack and filling. My favorite website - Of course LBT.com. I love journaling too, I keep my journal right here on the website. My favorite body feature, my colar bones, its just been so long since I've seen them, now I can't quit feeling them. I love the fact that I have them, also my wrist are so tiny, people comment on how tiny they are all the time. I've NEVER in my life had anything on my entire body be called "tiny". I love the fact that I weigh less than my husband, this is a big favorite of mine. I've never weighed less then him. I love the fact he can pick me up now and carry me. I feel like a real woman! These are just a few of my favorites since the LapBand. I have many others.

    2 week liquid diet

Wow! My doctor put me on a 1200 calorie per day meal plan but left the decision how I would accomplish that task up to me. In 2 and a 1/2 weeks I lost 8 pounds. I just have to keep it going.

    Starting regular foods? Help.

shaved meat... turkey or chicken were my first.. they are fairly wet meats.. dry stuff goes down hard.. and string cheese is good.. tuna.. chicken.. salmon... proteins like that are great for you and not high in calories either.. I can have pretty much anything I want.. but I stay away from fatty foods.. I read labels carefully.. low carbs.. fat free.. sugar free... once you read the labels.. you will find what is good and what isnt good for you.. my stomach tolerated those well.. small amts at first and weigh your food too.. that way you dont set yourself up to eat too much.. you wont be able to eat much really.. pay attention to what your stomach is telling you.. and trust me.. it will tell you when you are full or close to it.. best of luck to you on your new journey.. im post op dec 20th and down 66lbs and happy to be buying new clothes

    Week 3 Standstill

Right there with you!! Yesterday was 3 weeks since surgery and I have been on purees for 1 week at this point. Weight is the same today as it was on Sunday. I am meeting all my goals (protein, calories, fluids) and yesterday was my highest carb day (30 with 10 grams fiber=20 net) due to eating some mashed up borracho beans at a birthday party. Daily walking at our neighborhood trail of 1 mile a day. I refuse to let it bother me and fortunately I don't have any bad things in the house. This too shall pass!!

    Last 30 pounds! Help!

So hope you're feeling better now and no longer sick. I plateaued the past couple months which also led to nibbles here and there of things i shouldn't eat, and like everyone else here knew i had to go back to tracking everything! Also I spoke to a nutritionist who works with body-builders about it, because i couldn't believe with 6x/week exercise and only 7-800 cal a day (~75 g protein) I wasn't losing weight. He said to count the carbs, and keep them under 30 at this calorie level. I know it's just me and only his advice, but as soon as i backed off the fruit and extra bits like sauces and such with more carbs, I started losing again, now 3 pounds in the past two weeks. (Yay!) I'm 27 lbs to goal, so in much the same boat - and before now I hadn't lost three pounds in two months~! SO not happy about that! Anyway, just a thought. I know lean cuisines taste good and are easy, but consider looking for some alternatives that don't have the carbs that all those frozen entree's seem to have. Good luck - hope you're on the downward scale slide soon!
  24. That answer is partially up to you. The part that you have an impact on is your caloric input and output. The other part of that answer is that there is not a set time until you begin to lose again. My first 6 weeks after banding I did not make the best food choices every minute of every day, but I also didn't ever exceed my caloric intake goals (<1,000 calories / day) and I did not lose any weight. We are all different and time will tell.
  25. hey julie. i don't have an answer for you. i have the same question. i clicked on your thread to see the answers. i haven't gotten my first fill yet and am on solid foods now and the scales are no longer moving. It's frustrating. i hadn't done very well at keeping track of my calories so today I began to do that again just to see if that is the problem. i'll check back to see if anyone replies.
