  1. Kaiser does great follow up. Today I had a 2 1/2 month appointment with dietician and physician assistant - here is 1. Vitamins - take the 1,500 mg a day on top of amount you get in foods. 2. Carbs - said don't do just a low carb diet, they had a few that did low carb diets and while they lost weight they caused problems because they were not eating the right foods and their lab results for vitamins and minerals were way off and causing other problems so they got them to eat normal. 3. Eat 3 real food meals and use Protein shake or Protein Bars for the between meal Snacks. Keep to 1/4 cup protein, 1/4 cup vegetable, 1/4 cup fruit and 1/4 cup starch/carb. Eventually the between meals snacks go away. 4. Calories - get 1,200 calories per day, extra protein or carbs before working out. Trainer says carbs before and protein after. 5. Weighing - keep vigilant, weigh once every couple of days to monitor process just don't become obsessive with doing it 3 times a day. Keep from putting on weight by monitoring it. 6. Even for Men, use Women's One a Day as it has more Calcium and Iron, something Men's One a Day doesn't have. I was sleeved on August 4, 2011 at 233 pounds as of October 26, 2011 I am down to 196 pounds for a 54% excess body weight loss. The expected loss for 1 to 2 years is 50 to 55% so I have already met the full goal of the sleeve surgery and now on my back on my own to lose weight through diet and exercise. This was done by sticking to diet plan (at least 90% of the time) for post op. Had labs done today and so far results coming in good. Good luck everyone, we can do it.
  2. I'm also starting out on my journey. I started October 2011 and hope to get banded between May and July of this year. My insurance company requires me to see a nutritionist for 6 months. I have PCOS so at age 12 I went from 110 pounds to 289 pounds in a year. I NEVER changed how I was eating. I gained it due to my PCOS. I've tried many diets and I'd always lose 20 pounds then BAM I'd gain 30-40 pounds back. I've already cut out all soda and sugar drinks and I've drastically have changed how I eat. I am on a 1,500 calorie a day diet. I exercise 3-5 times a week for 30-90 minutes depending on what I'm doing and if I have a busy day. I ALWAYS do a minimum of 30 minutes tho even if I'm late for something. My Lap Band is just going to help me feel full. I personally don't look at it as a get skinny quick and I don't think that it's the latest fad. Where I live maybe 1 out of 1,000 people have it if that. I live in Vermont and the only ones that I know that have it are on my husband's side of the family and they live in New Hampshire and a lot of his family has it. He doesn't because he's average size and doesn't have their genes since he's adopted. I'm going for it also to help lose the weight to help me with my fertility. My doctor recommended it for me because of my BMI and they actually recommended it at age 18 but I wasn't ready and truthfully I still wanted to eat. I used to live to eat but now I eat to live. I've realized that I don't need as much food and mentally I'm finally ready. I can say no to my favorite foods and deserts. I hope you do great on your journey and I wish you the best of luck

    Am I screwed?

If I had to choose between a couple bites of hamburger or pizza and entire cans of stew or heaps of hamburger helper, I would personally go for the thing that fills me with small bites. Granted, it would be more ideal to make good food choices, but the way I look at it is I am taking in way fewer calories with a few bites of pizza than I would be with an entire can of stew. :tongue2: (not to mention the SALT content in the stew that will keep a lot of Water weight on!)
  4. And even with your first fill it will take a while for restriction. Remember band isn't like bypass where it's instant. It's custom designed so each feel you'll be tighten til you get restriction. I'm 18 months post op and just now getting restriction or sweet spot. Mainly cause I went months without a fill and ate like ma piggy over the holidays. I stayed hungry! However just because you're hungry doesn't mean eat everything. I did best when I watches my calories and make sure I get protein

    Jumping in

Thank you all for replying to my post and for welcoming me. I hope I have found a good place to be. I have sent my coordinatior an email and I'm hoping she gets back to me on Monday. I like the thought of keeping a journal and I am starting that today. I did that a while back when I was counting calories. I wrote everything down - not just what I ate, but what all was going on at the time and it was working great. I was losing weight actually 25 pounds and 44 inches in 7 weeks then my uncle and my father passed away and I could never get back on track. My mom and aunt have had gastric bypass. I never liked the thought of rerouting so it was never an option. I have been looking into lap band for a while and finally went to the seminar. I did find out that I have ironically seen my family dr on 11-19, 12-19, and 01-13 and that counts so I half way there as far as the weigh ins go. My surgeon only does lap bands once a week so I am looking at anywhere from mid May to first week of June for my surgery. At this point, I am only excited, not nervous at all. I'm sure I will have many questions along the way and any advice will be greatly appreciated. Becky

    Do you feel weak?

It's amazing how many calories you can get in on liquids (not clear liquids, but blended liquids). During the liquid post-op days I didn't gain or lose. Just maintained, which was good. I didn't have any weakness during that time. But, if you ever become too tight and can't get down solids or liquids THAT is when you get weak. The past few weeks have been a reminder to me - if you become so tight that you can't eat solids and can drink few liquids get an unfill immediately because it does not get better with time. Only worse. Even during the "too tight" times I have continued my exercise program-just took it easier. I didn't want to get out of the routine. Good luck!

    how do you know????

How long do you stay satisfied? for me its 4 to 5 hours. Also how many calories are you getting in for the day? I stay satisfy for a good 4 hours plus on about 1 cup of food with about 1000 to 1200 calories a day. Hope that answers your questions.

    concerned by high fat

At 6 weeks out, light non acidic white wine (Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc) are do-able without problem, but the reds don't taste right/sit right yet so I avoid them that this point. I make sure to count it in my calorie count so it doesn't become a weight loss problem. I know it's ideal not to drink at all, but I'm a wine nut, and my goal is to enjoy in moderation.

    concerned by high fat

My nut. told me to eat the yolks and I don't have eggs on the same day as I have cheese. The parmesan is the hard kind and I hand grated an ounce. It's already so difficult to get in enough protein I take it where I can get it. And anyway, my point was - how high fat is too high fat? What about good fats vs. bad fats? Even on days when I have taken in nothing but meat - boiled chicken, plain tuna, steak - the fat percentage is still an alarmingly high percentage of my daily total, even though my calories are less than 600 most days and my carbs less than 10.

Protien - how do you get it in?

I just got started on soft foods yesterday and I had a bit of mashed potatoes with some salt, pepper, and butter. SOOOOO FILLING, so delicious, and it got me A LOT closer to my carbohydrate and calorie goal. I still am not eating enough to get my goal but getting closer every day. I go for HIGH CALORIC beverages to try and get the calories I need. Once you get on soft foods, try the Chick-fil-a chocolate milkshake with NO whipcream or cherry (bad for us), throw two scoops of Protein powder and some skim milk in... one of those lasts me for two days but it's a great way to get TONS of protein (because of the powder and all the milk), it tastes DELICIOUS and it gets me some fat and calories. Keep in mind, once we can eat, that'll be bad, but for now, it's AWESOME to get us closer to our goal nutrition.
  11. Protein shakes aren't magic, they're calories just like any other food. Don't worry about trying to afford them if it's too hard right now, stick to cheaper sources of protein. FWIW, I have never drunk them, I lost 120% of my excess weight and have kept it off for five years.

    Skinny Cow

I actually have a major sweet tooth. I'm 6 months post-op and enjoy fiber one bars. They are only 90 calories. I've tried both the brownie and chocolate peanut butter bar

    5 days post op

I slept propped up in my loveseat because I don't have a recliner. It worked well. I had to do it for about a week before I could sleep in my bed. As for the fluids and protein, that's likely the reason you're feeling off. Also, you may not be getting enough calories. Try to drink protein shakes and protein water, that way you can at least get your fluids and protein in at the same time.

    Yogurt?

Dannon light & Fit 80 calories, greek yogurt.. low sugar good protein. a variety of flavors.
  15. Hello Sleevers, I weighed myself in the am and was 238. Yay!! 10 pounds in 8 days. Now I weigh myself this evening and I'm 240. I'm only drinking Protein shakes and a half cup of Soup for lunch. Total calories is about 470. I'm also walking at a brisk pace for an hour for exercise. It's not the calories. The only thing diffrent today was that I managed to get about 58 ounces of Water down. So, I think this could be just water weight and it will all work it's way out eventually. Has anyone else had or seen this?

    back on track and breastfeeding?

I have been breastfeeding through the entire surgery process. Liquid diet, post-op diet, etc. all of which is very low calorie, sometimes only 500. The pediatrician and lactation said that as long as I am drinking enough water (64oz+/day) I will produce milk as normal. And guess what they were right! No dip in supply. It's a myth that you need extra calories to breastfeed. The fat composition of your milk may change but baby should be fine. Good luck!

    Crazy "sweet spot" question....what next?

The monthly visits are very important, whether you're losing weight or not. The doctor wants to monitor your progress. Too much weight being lost, they're going to unfill you a little bit. I know that might horrify some of you, but I lost a lot of hair during my 100 lbs fiasco that scared the bejesus out of me because I ate terribly, nothing nutritious, mashed potatoes loaded with butter and southwest eggrolls...but I kept losing because my restriction was so tight. Fortunately I have a lot of hair and it wasn't noticeable except when I wore black suit jackets...but I put a stop to that by going vegetarian and following the blood type diet, which is the last regimen I will ever need! If you are not losing fast enough, they'll bump you up a little. I could swear the thinking at my doc's office was: 1. Fill - liquids 2 days (lose weight) 2. Mushy foods 2 days (lose more weight) 3. Solid/regular...which makes you maintain for another 3 - 4 weeks til next follow up. Like clock work, 4 - 8 lbs a month. I always lost the most during fill time and then it was just my body dealing with the lost fat. Then my body would be like "OK...lord...we can survive with those 8 lbs, I just made the adjustments, we should be able to hang on to calories again!" and then I thwart it with another fill :wink2:
  18. Hey everyone! I am about two months post op with my surgery date having been 08/31. I had the gastric sleeve surgery and on the date of surgery I was 358. Currently I am 330 and have been losing weight VERY slowly. My goal weight is 160-180 so I have quite a long way to go. Has anyone else experienced this? Are there any tips on how to ramp up the weight loss or any meal plans to help keep calories in check so I am not eating more than medically advised? Thank you Sent from my SM-N975U using BariatricPal mobile app
  19. For me at 8.75 months out it is very possible to eat the wrong foods. It is not stomach hunger but I have now learned why I eat when I shouldn't be. Now I am at my goal weight so if 90-95% of the time I eat healthy I do have treats or cheat foods if you like. This is definitely a journey and changes month to month. My best advise is to stick with the low calorie/low carb diet during the weight loss phase; this worked extremely well for me. You can do this, set your mind to being a success and you will!!

    Starvation Mode

Does anyone know how long it takes for your body to get out of starvation mode? What happens when you go from 600 calories a day to 1,000 calories a day? Do you gain weight immediately then taper off? Thanks, LynnAnn

    Protein Help????

I use unjury chocolate splendor. It's really good... I mix it with unsweetened almond milk. Recently discovered almond milk and it's half the calories of skim milk. Works good in coffee too!
  22. Absolutely no regrets. I have an excellent doctor I've been seeing since 1981. He told me a year ago that diabetes was kicking in and I should consider RYGB. I decided to try one more time and put myself on 1200 calories a day. In a year I gained 30 pounds. I had to prove to myself I couldn't beat it by being stubborn (a family trait). Preparing for surgery was actually easier than usual because I was paying for everything myself and didn't have to deal with insurance companies. Within days of the surgery I was off diabetes meds, and every time I test it my blood sugar is normal. I'm down 50 pounds and am feeling better than I have in years. I'm over 60, and I decided I was not going to spend the next 20 years in a 400 pound body. Now I have lots of plans, projects and goals, and a good shot at making them.

    Frustration With Protien

I can't drink the Protein shakes with milk any more. It took me about 2 weeks to be able to drink a protien drink in under 3 hours. I started drinking 2 ounces, putting it back in the fridge, coming back 30 minutes later and drinking more until it was all gone. I have developed a distaste for them. I started drinking the Isopure zero carb Protein Shakes from GNC. I can drink plain milk, but the taste of the protein is intolerable. I also can not drink plain Water. It actually turns my stomach and causes pain. I talked to the surgeon and he suggested mixing up the Protein drinks with more variety including ice cubes in the blender, Peanut Butter or a bit of a bananna. He gave me a list of about 50 variations to try and suggested citrus or cukes in the water to change the make up enough. I am 32 days out from surgery now and have found that if I don't drink the protein I don't lose. I haven't lost a pound in 3 weeks because I wasn't getting enought calories. I also started using a straw eventhough it is not suggested because if helps.

    Do you fear "re-fatting"?

Yes. I am just focusing on more veggies and fruits, and less animal protien. I know, I know - but no. A year later I am living a near-vegan lifestyle and I am fine without tons of animal protien. Better. Muscle mass is amping up. My pants size is smaller than my shirt size, due to my shoulders and across my chest (not boobs, chest). I have alot of excess skin, but you can see the definition below it now. The muscle counters the calories, and the balanced foods allow my body to use the vegtable protien optimally.

HELP! Samples meals need, I'll Start

Great idea OP, thanks for starting it! Breakfast I am a creature of habit when it comes to breakfast for the most part its 1 or 3 meals! 1. 1 pckt sugar free oatmeal (Walmarts Brand) and half a scoop of banana flavored Protein mix 2. 1 scrambled egg with 2% cheddar cheese mixed together with about 3 strawberries on the side 3. 100 calorie wheat/high Fiber english muffin toasted, I then cut up a boiled egg with about a tsp low-fat mayo and have an egg sandwich. I can only eat about 2/3's of it but its a great change to the oatmeal! lunch I eat a lot of the South Beach pre-package meals since its easy to take to work with me I also like to do cottage cheese with strawberries and a few slices of organic turkey breast deli meat with no fillers (Nature's Promise brand is the best) dinner Once a week I make a batch of meat-free chili that is so good. 1 can of black Beans 1 can of pinto beans 1 can of red kidney beans 2 cans of fat-free chicken broth 1 packet of spicy chili seasoning 1 can of fat-free refried beans 1 can of fire-roast stewed tomatos drain and rinse all of the whole beans, mix all the ingreds together, except the refried beans, let it simmer for about 30 minutes then add the refried beans to thicken the chili. Or if you don't like thick chili you can leave out the refried beans all together. Also if you must have meat try adding 93% fat free all white turkey breast meat to it. Another favorite meal is taking chicken breast and grilling them (I use my George Foreman) then dice them up...in a large skillet add about a TBS of olive oil and throw in some summer squash, onions, mushrooms and zucchini after the veggies are tender throw in the chicken and add about 1/4 cup of fat free terryika sauce...serve over couscous. My entire family loves this meal. Other then that my meals look like everyone elses! Good luck! Can't wait to get some other goods ideas!
