  1. So I am 54 days post op, and I have been having these sharp pains on and off all day. I'm thinking it's related to the late night parfair I grabbed on the way back from a 3 hour trip from my in-laws over memorial day weekend. It was late and I had a dumping (vomiting) episode earlier on Monday from (trying out) 2 bites of steak and it not digesting well, and eating other food on top of the non digested steak bits. So since this morning with the sharp pains I kept running to the bathroom thinking I had to BM (sorry to be gross), so I went once, then a few hours later went again, with diarrhea (sorry again), and it was a little bloody. Now I'm like did I ef up something, or is this not unusual? I believe it might be parfait related, bc since then my stomach began cramping up. I didn't eat but a few bites of it due to the cramps and just to have something on my stomach from vomiting all of my food up earlier. Am I going to be ok, or am I being a hypochondriac. I'm still cramping btw and it's been almost 24 hours since the parfait. Sent from my SM-G920V using the BariatricPal App

    Spouses... jealousy

He won't. He's just not that type of guy. He has severe ptsd from Iraq and everything lately sets him off. This takes the cake though. I really expected him to be fully supportive. He knows for the love of God, I don't have a boyfriend. I don't want one! We play a game on our phones where we have an in game chat with other players.. naturally I hear all about that too. Can't say a word to anyone period without hearing some sort of bs from him. Then when I ask what it is that I've done so wrong...I hear " yeah, it's me... I'm so horrible." ???????? The great straw debate!

I accidentally used a straw without thinking over the weekend and nothing bad happened. No gas pains or feeling of fullness. Nothing! I Am 6 months out. Straws are not my thing so I don't plan to make it a regular habit. But I think this is one of those rules that is just BS.
  8. @Beck90. My personal opinion. After reading hundreds of post on this site I don't want to read anymore to get info. The information is all over the place. Some post after reading make me hesitant to go through with the surgery. Everyone's experience has been different and everyone's Doctor is different. My best friend was sleeved 7 yrs ago in Beirut, Lebanon. She never had to have a EGD test or the Motility test, no pre opt diet prior to surgery (ate pizza the night before surgery). To date she eats whatever she want (3 to 4 bites) drinks wine (no soda bc it just doesn't agree with her) has an occasional smoke and still looks amazing! Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App

    Easy Way Out.....ha!

There are so many more stereotypes about overweight people besides being lazy and taking the perceived "easy way out" with bariatric surgery. People think we are poor. Gina Rinehart of Australia, who owns a mineral exploration company, is the richest woman in the world. It looks like from her pictures that she may weigh around 300 pounds, more or less. People think we are stupid. Obviously, none of her fat-shaming critics are as smart as she is, or they would be as rich as she is. As for our critics, they don't count our street-smarts, life experiences and common sense either. My Grandfather was a farmer, but what he knew about agricultural science, meteorology, and animal husbandry would put any smarty pants to shame in a debate about those subjects. He was obese. People think we are lazy. Grandpa got up before dawn to milk the cows and he was busy until time to go to bed, never wasting a moment of daylight. I have a college degree which I got at the age of 58. I have worked too hard all of my life and finally worked myself into a stroke on the job. Anyone who wants to call me lazy can meet my fist. People think we are dirty and have poor hygiene. Well, excuuuuuuse me. I shower every day and keep my house clean enough that you can at least see where the furniture is when you come in the door. People think we are ignorant about nutrition. I dare say that most of us have fought our weight and dieted so much that we are experts on nutrition. But when Pepsi is cheaper than milk and Twinkies are cheaper than produce, it is easy to bring poor choices home. I believe that for the most part, our obesity has been due to: 1) our family environment and what we were fed growing up 2) obesogenic medications 3) medical conditions such as PCOS or thyroid disturbances, and then 4) portion distortion, clean your plate syndrome, and drive-through-itis, which is a chronic addiction perpetuated by fast food restaurants through the use of salt, grease, and sugar. The first three listed ingredients in their fries are potatoes, oil, dextrose (which is sugar). I asked my dad one time when I was little about why is it that most poor people are fat instead of skinny. He explained that the cheapest foods are potatoes, Pasta, and rice and that the more nutritious foods are often too expensive for them. Personally, I grew up on Kraft mac and cheese, hot dogs, and Pop-Tarts. My whole family is obese. There definitley is a double standard when it comes to obesity. Given the odds stacked against us, I think bariatric surgery is the smartest way to go. Haters are just ignorant of the facts.

    regret

Nikki, I am sorry you feel so crummy physically. This is only going to be short term though, you won't be stuck on broth and Popsicles in a few weeks, and you will find a way to eat with your family. You're certainly feeling the effect of fewer calories, and it's running in a deficit that's going to make the weight go away. But don't forget that you're also wiped out bc you had major surgery, and your body is working overtime on creating new tissue and knitting everything back together again. sleep as much as you can, and give your mind a chance to catch up with your body. Give yourself a chance. If I can ask.....what were some of the reasons you wanted to have the surgery? Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App

What will I NEVER be able to eat?

VSGAnn2014, thank you for all the information. Thankfully I do not have an eating disorder. I think I just needed reassurance bc of comments made by friends. I know I will have to make better choices, even if I have the ability to eat whatever I want. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  12. Thinking ahead to what might be realistic this holiday weekend next year. Not fantasy, but....possible, likely. So, next year Memorial Day....I am going to be away for the weekend, to a seaside/beach location. The exact kind of place I avoid now bc right now I am only a spectator to everyone else's fun. Next year, maybe I will go swimming, maybe I won't....depends on what I want to do. I will have a CHOICE. I will be in a perfectly nice one piece bathing suit with a gorgeous sarong tied around my waist, sitting outside by the pool maybe.....no more sitting by the pool in jeans and a t shirt and lying that "oh, no I am not too hot." I will maybe be wearing a size medium or large (am 3x now), but no matter what size I am, I won't have to wonder if people are are staring at me for unkind reasons. When I walk into a crowded restaurant and walk between tables, I won't have to apologize again and again for bumping every table I walk between. Next year, maybe I won't be sweating when everyone else is not. Maybe my makeup won't sweat off. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App
  13. My surgery was on 4/13/2016. I'll be 27 on may 31st. HW: 220 SW: 190 CW:163 GW: 125. I'm 5'1". I have diabetes, hypothyroidism, genetic high cholesterol, PCOS, migraines, sleep apnea (what my dad passed away of when I was 11), acid reflux, had a bad gallbladder (it was removed on 2/5/16) and fatty liver. I would work my behind off at the gym 5 days a week for 2 hours each day. I had a personal trainer and nothing ever seemed to help. For those of you with hypothyroidism, y'all should know what I'm talking about. If you aren't on the right medication, you won't lose weight you will keep gaining. I found out soon after my daddy passed, I was 12 (he passed in march, i turned 12 in may) that I had hypothyroidism and I'd have to take medicine the rest of my life for it. Then when I was about 17 I found out I was now a type 2 diabetic. 10 years later, after I found out I was diabetic and going on 2 months post operation on 6/13/16, I haven't had to have any insulin since the first day post operation. My bs stays btw 100-130. I was cleared from surgery on 5/24/2016. I am not so tired now and I can't wait to meet my goal weight! Good luck everyone with their journeys! 14. @@aimee belle crockford I don't think anyone is trying to be cruel.. i think they are just being honest and are concerned for your wellbeing. Testing your sleeve this early out is extremely dangerous, you can risk getting food stuck in your staple line in your stomach and you risk getting a leak. I understand that you may feel that you can eat solids, but it is extremely important that you follow your post op instructions. The doctors do not force these rules because they are bored or on some power trip... it is for OUR safety. Is being re admitted into hospital worth it? Is a piece of cheese worth being fed by a tube because of a leak? Please remember you only have a small percentage left of your stomach... if you ruin it... they can't get you new one or cut off the ruined bit.. thats all you have left. My program had us starting purees on day 3... and thats quite early compared to some plans... and cheese was not allowed... Please be mindful that just because we can't see it.. doesn't mean there isn't something as major as cutting off 80% of your tummy going on the inside. I wish you all the best in your journey.. and i wish you a speedy recovery.
  15. The kids were complaint so we googled and that one was a natural way to deter mosquitos... Haven't got any fed back from the kids if they tried it yet... We're just starting to mosquitos season here in NY... They have been doing lots of aerial spraying as there is a fear of Zika virus being spread so maybe that will cut back on them... Keep me posted if it works... Happy dog walking, my dog loves walking too Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Emotions post op

I am almost 3 weeks post op and I know exactly how you feel. I was so excited to move to puréed foods from liquids but had some pain and my dr moved me back to liquids. That actually happened twice. I felt so discouraged and had the EXACT SAME feelings... Will I get my Protein and liquids in? What did I do to myself? Will I ever be able to live socially normal again? I was borderline depressed, which is CRAZY! A friend of mine (actually my "Surgery Sister") suggested I keep a journal of how I'm feeling every day, good and bad. I track what I eat anyways so journaling my feelings will help to see if certain foods upset my tummy or trigger certain hormones/feelings. And then I can look back on it later to see how far I've come too! I can promise you, it DOES get better!! Listen to your body and do what it tells you. If liquids are easier then do liquids. Go slow. Just bc others can progress at a certain pace doesn't mean you have to. Everyone's journey is different. I've moved myself back to liquids for a day or so on my own in the last week bc of bad cramping... And it's ok bc I knew that's what my body needed. Our bodies are like babies just learning how to digest and process food again and when you think about it that way it all makes sense! 2 more things... #1 Unflavored protein has been my crutch to help me meet my protein goals. nectar by Syntrax is what I use. And the fluids will get better. I try to drink at least 8oz before I eat Breakfast and although it sounds simple, the days I do I usually hit my Water goal... #2 About the exhaustion. Most of us were eating THOUSANDS of calories a day and are now maybe getting in 400-500. That's a crazy drop that you have to let your body get used to. And on top of your body still healing from surgery, it's hard to fuel our still overweight bodies with such few calories. So it's normal for your body to take a few weeks to figure out how to do that. Keep it up... You're doing great! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  17. I hate to say it but I couldn't wear a bra for about 8-9 days bc to me every time I tried it felt like the incision was being stretched and it hurt REALLY bad. The good news is that the little incision that you're talking about is tiny bc all it's used for it to put the instrument that retracts your liver (at least that's what my dr said)... So it heals the fastest. I'm less than 3 weeks post op and not only is the incision healed but there isn't even a scar! I went from no bra for 8-9 days back to regular bras... Although they were already too big! Lol Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  18. I am going through the exact same thing... Had surgery 5/10, lost 20lbs from pre op day of 5/2 until about 5/21 and then started slowing, almost to a stop and I was CONVINCED that the surgery didn't work. Like my dr didn't really change anything, just made incisions, let me lay there for a few hours then sewed me back up and told my family I was done! So... #1 I stopped weighing myself every day. I'll weigh once a week and that's about it bc I don't think it's mentally healthy to start obsessing over that number on the scale this early in the game. #2 As everyone's said, it's completely normal to stall week 3-4. And it makes sense. Not only are we healing but most of us go from 2,000+ calories/day to maybe 500-600. So it's a very drastic change that our bodies are trying to deal with and wonder if it's the new norm. Not to mention it's hard to fuel our heavier bodies with such a drastic cut in calories... #3 I'm trying to focus on the small NSVs I've had, for instance the disappearance of my second chin lol We just have to stay positive and trust the process because clearly, it DOES work! Message me if you ever need some encouragement!! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  19. Where do you guys go is you eat out? I'm thinking that I will end up being expensive (being an adult) and not eat much. My husband and I and our families love going out. I want to make sure that I'm still eating, but I want to be able to have just a couple bites and not have to take it all home. It's not a REAL HUGE concern, but just something I thought about! My surgeon said that a lot of times spouses lose weight too, but in my case, I think my husband will end up gaining bc he will be finishing my plate! ... "Are ya gonna finish that?" Haha Where do you go/what do you eat? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  20. I am glad I didn't have to go through all this, so everyone has my sympathies. I guess it is supposed to be in your best interest, and honestly I do all those things: see my nutritionist, attend support groups, therapy, etc. Personally, it sounds like a lot of BS as surgery is supposed to help diabetes, but I don't know how much an a1c level correlates with personal responsibility and choices, but I am not diabetic and was not pre-diabetic. I think I had it pretty easy with the whole process, but I already had a lap band removed a few years ago so maybe that helped. I definitely pushed for surgery while I was under my current plan, which is pretty good, but runs out soon. It is so weird, because I thought a high a1c would be better for the insurance qualifications. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  21. Hey everyone! So I am 3 months into my journey of the 6 month supervised weight checks. I have had pcos much longer but only diagnosed in March of 2014 and have been on Metformin and BC since then but the last time I had blood work done in March 2016, my testosterone levels were higher than a "normal" PCOS person so my pcp sent me to an endocrinologist. I just saw the endo on Thursday and she said she is not so much concerned with the testosterone levels as she is with the color of the stretch marks on my stomach and the top of my arm by my armpit. She is thinking possible Cushing's and I am now waiting to go in for bloodwork this morning after having a dexamethasone(sp) pill and then next week I have to collect my urine for 24 hours and do another blood test. Not only am I scared of the treatments for Cushing's depending on the cause of it, but I'm also worried about it affecting my August or September GBS. She said if the bloodwork comes back ok, then she will continue treatment for PCOS. I guess I'm just needing input on anyone who has gone through this or anyone who was diagnosed with Cushing's and still had the surgery? Sorry for such a long and depressing first post, my nerves are just getting the best of me and you all are a wealth of knowledge Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Am i in trouble?

Pls don't LOL, Gsleeve822.... This is serious, you have to know that. Right now by eating 200 calories a day you are living off not just your stored fat, you are burning up your muscle (bc I am guessing that with only 200 calories a day, you don't have a lot of energy to exercise....and exercise helps keep your muscle mass from being used for fuel). You're not burning fat, you're burning up your body's muscular framework. The other danger here is that you are training your metabolism to work on 200 calories a day.....that's setting you up for a nightmare when it comes to maintenance. Get back on the Protein shakes, if you can't find one you love, oh well, you need to drink it anyway. Get yourself an empty NyQuil cup or some tiny cup with a 1 tablespoon measuring line on it. Pour ONE tablespoon of Protein shake in there, and drink one tablespoon every 15 minutes. A Premier Protein shake has 11 ounces total, which comes out to 22 tablespoons. If you do this you will take in 30 grams of protein in 5 and a half hours.....do it all day long and you can get in 2 shakes and 60 grams of protein. Please get a comprehensive book on weight loss surgery that includes post-op food plans. Read it like your life depends on it. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App

    Am i in trouble?

Its very odd to change my thinking around this bc i hot my surgery so i cant eat too much, but now i have to eat more than i feel i am capable of. Lol It is completely different from our pre-op life. Pre-op it was about maximizing volume and minimizing calories. Post-op, it is about maximizing nutrition and minimizing volume.
