  1. Wondering if people wanted to share their experience / success stories / frustrations with losing weight at their personal pace. Some days i find it hard to not trivialize my success and i think its is because I am losing slowly, which can be VERY frustrating but i did not have any complications, a definitive goal set up yet or loose skin so i should learn to count my blessings. How do you maintain perspective?
  2. Hello Midwest Girl and welcome to the site I just wanted to share my story a little with you, and hope that it can help in some way. I had the sleeve (not band) back in November of 2016. I lost a lot of weight, finally reaching my goal weight in March of this year. However, in January, I started having trouble swallowing, severe pain in chest and neck when eating, etc, etc. It just got worse from there and did a barium swallow, which confirmed GERD and a hiatal hernia. It took months for my gastro and surgeon to try different meds, tests, endoscopies, hospitalizations, etc. They really didn't want to do another surgery, because I had already had a long and painful history with several abdominal surgeries.... these have left me with abdominal pain that I deal with on a regular daily basis. I too, had mesh from an open incisional hernia repair late last year. When my gastro and surgeon told me that I needed the bypass, I was concerned. Lots of abdominal surgeries and the mesh, etc..... was worried about it. Like yours, my surgeon is very experienced, he is so skilled and I just love everything about him. Completely trust my surgeon. He went over everything about the procedures a few weeks ago with myself and my husband. He let me know that he could successfully do the hiatal hernia repair and the gastric bypass at the same time, however, he also told me that there was a good chance that my surgery might need to done as an open surgery. If that were the case, he would need to cut through the hernia mesh in my abdomen, perform the bypass, etc, and redo the mesh and sew everything back together. He put that all out in the open. I was scared of another open surgery and the thought of complications, but at the same time, the GERD was so awful that I decided the bypass had to be done no matter what. Couldn't go on living like I had been. Well, guess what? Here I am a week out of hernia repair/bypass surgery and my surgeon did NOT have to cut through my old hernia mesh! I had my surgery done laparoscopically. My surgeon said things went so smoothly. For the past two days I have actually had REAL food, not liquids only, and NO PAIN from GERD!!! What a relief! I suggest that if your surgeon is experienced, you trust him, you feel good about what he is telling you, that you GO FOR IT! I know it is easy to worry, be scared, etc. But you can work through those things. I hope this helps you even just a little bit. Wish you the best.

Preparing for family life after surgery

Honestly, don't prep. My wife tried to and we ended up with things getting tossed because it was either way too much to consume post op or I just couldn't tolerate the item any longer. I mean, post op, 1 oz of food is going to totally fill you up and take you a while to get down, so 1 can of say Chili is going to last pretty damn long. Prepping for the family's easement maybe, you might not want to be around cooking food for a few, I know I had a hard time the smell of cooking food for a week or so, just turned my stomach. After a week or so, barring any complications you should be just fine overall, I know I wasn't allowed to pick up more than 10 lbs for 6 weeks... so 1 gallon of milk is 10 lbs, so you'll want to plan for stuff of that nature. Good Luck!

    Any May 2018 Sleeves?

Had mine on 5/22. No complications. Doing 3 protein shakes a day and other clear liquids. Really want eat some regular food but waiting for ok. I think the 3 week mark I can start soft foods. Only have pain if I do something too strenuous. Get tired quickly. Have not been nauseous much until last couple of days. I’m going to try switching I’ll I drink. Today I could only drink 2shakes.

    any June Sleevers??

I, too, have been cooking for my husband and kids. Some nights I could eat my helpings plus theirs!!! But I’m too chicken sh*t to risk complicating the surgery so I’ve powered through and you can too!!! It will give you a new meaning to the words ‘will power’ that’s for sure! I’m scheduled for June 6th. Good luck to you!

    July Gastric Bypass?

Hey Em_Jay, How's it going? Are you getting ready for your surgery date? Mine is further out but I still need to get all the vitamins and stuff for the pre-surgery diet. I am anxious to just get through it. I am getting nervous reading horror stories on here. I am so terrified of vomiting! My surgeon insists I shouldn't get sick if I am following the rules unless there is a complication of some type. How long do you plan to be off of work? I plan on 2 weeks but I may work from home some the second week. Well, just wanted to say hi! Hope you're having a good weekend! Megan

    Body lift done!

Hello there, the insurance pays for it because of the complications you get from the extra skin. You can get rashes and fungus up under the skin sores and infections. My doctor said that it's the way you word it when you send in for your insurance approval. I had my surgery on May 29th and I must say it is painful. I'm in so much pain. But I have no regrets. Most of the pain come from getting up and down off the toilet and in and out the chairs. I've been sleeping in a recliner. I haven't laid down in my bed yet.

    Life with CPAP

Sleep is a complicated thing. That machine will help you but it may take some time, especially when you clearly have had a very irregular sleep pattern. I have severe sleep apnea, but also insomnia and difficulty staying asleep (poor sleep hygiene I think my sleep doc called it). I’ve struggled with this for decades, including 15 years on CPAP, which I will never give up. The last month or so I’ve been taking 1 mg melatonin and a cup of chamomile tea when I go to bed—those help me get to sleep. Also 10 mg of doxepin to help me stay asleep. I’ve been sleeping great and feel so much better. Hopefully the trend will continue. Everything I read says you have to get into a good pattern and then stay there. Hang in there and talk to a genuine sleep doc if you continue to have trouble. You’ll get there!

    Pre-op Labs

For my pre-op blood work they did the following tests which totaled 56 results: IRON AND TOTAL IRON BINDING CAPACITY, COMPREHENSIVE METABOLIC PANEL, CBC (INCLUDES DIFF/PLT), C-REACTIVE PROTEIN, HS CRP, HEMOGLOBIN A1c, HOMOCYSTEINE, FERRITIN, FOLATE, RBC, T4, FREE, TSH, VITAMIN B12, VITAMIN D,25-OH,TOTAL,IA, HELICOBACTER PYLORI, UREA BREATH TEST, VITAMIN B1 (THIAMINE), BLOOD, LC/MS/MS, NICOTINE AND COTININE, LC/MS/MS, SERUM/PLASMA It's just to make sure they have your full baseline to compare with post-op and follow up, and to make sure you aren't already deficient in anything or have any bacteria or issues that would cause complications during surgery. Totally normal stuff!
  10. For the last year, I've been taking Kratom, an herb from Southeast Asia that has pain relief properties. I had spinal surgery 2 yrs ago and I had a complication - I now have both feet paralyzed with foot drop on the right. I walk with a limp, as I wear a brace on the right. Spent 3 months in inpatient rehab, relearning to walk. So now I'm left with a limp thats screwing up my hip, as I now compensate from my limp. And my back and right leg r still painful. So the surgery did nothing. Cept paralyze my feet! My son told me about Kratom and I decided "What the heck". I ordered some off the internet. OMG - it works fantastically! It's almost as good as narcotics, but don't give u side effects. Problem is I have to take a ton of it. I take 16 capsules 2x a day and 32 at nite. I can also mix powder with choc milk - however, it tastes AWFUL so thats for emergencies! Ok, my dilemma: I'm having a bypass revision of my sleeve. I've had severe reflux for the last 4 yrs and my GI dr recommended bypass, as people with the sleeve have such a high rate of reflux. Stomach acid has nowhere to go but up. With the RNY, the plumbing allows acid to flow thru. I currently take 7 (yep, 7) Nexium, 2 Protonix, 40mg Prilosec, and chew Gavascon like candy. I weigh 150 and Im having a revision. Crazy. Scheduled for July 19th. It's 100% for reflux, not weightloss. I know I can't be taking all those pills nor can I drink 8-12 oz of a protein shake at once. If u take kratom and have experience with the RNY, I'd luv to hear from u. What do I do? I will literally not be able to sleep, as my back pain and anxiety keep me up. Help! Marci

    Open RNY?

I would second the laparoscopic over the open, SO much less complications with the minimally invasive option. If you have the choice, go laparoscopic.
  12. Sorry this might be a long post. So, I got the call this week that I have been approved for surgery. I have my pre-op consultation and physical on June 12th, then 2-3 weeks after that will be surgery. Exciting and scary! I've been working on this for months and months now. I feel like I should be more happy about it. I am happy but I'm more scared than I thought I would be. I've gone down this road before with the lap-band and didn't do well with it/ had some complications with it, so maybe that's part of why I'm more scared now than I was when I had the band surgery. I don't want to fail, and I know this is a forever change to my anatomy. I know it's my best shot at long term success. I guess I'm just overwhelmed with the fact that it's happening and my life will be forever changed. I'm also a little sad about it too. Maybe because my size has been kind of a safety blanket (if that makes any sense at all). And I have no idea what to expect because I've never been a normal weight before. I'm also sad because a good friend of mine at work (who was recently promoted within the department) who I thought would be supportive, has gone more into boss mode and being more concerned about work than my life/health, which has really made me sad. I have no problem getting the time off of work, but my department tries to guilt me into postponing any time I've had some sort of procedure done, but never does with anyone else. I'm just overwhelmed with emotions right now, and just needed to get some of it out. Thanks for listening.

    First Post!

Excellent. Thanks for asking. No surgery complications, no pain, no nausea. I hope your surgery goes as smoothly as mine. My biggest struggle is getting enough fluid. I used to guzzle water all day. Now I have to sip and it takes forever to try to reach my goal. As you get closer, you will probably have some nerves. Trust your surgeon and think about the new you! 14. Honestly I'm surprised they even bothered to continue using the band, given that several major manufactures have stopped making parts and one company actually sold off their whole Lap Band section of the company. You'd think that if they were going to open you up, that they would have provided you with a better option than adjusting/fixing a product that no one is really even using anymore due to issues and complications that have caused the whole Lap Band industry to give up. Any adjustment to the band position is going to drastically change how it works, so it's wholly possible that the adjusted angle means it's going to take more fluid to reach some level of restriction, as far as air in the band... why didn't they burp it when they had the chance to do so? I'd be questioning everything the surgeon has said and done at this point personally, This is only my point of view, having been banded back in 2011 myself and all the issues I faced with the band and my conversations with my surgeon about the band, which lead to me being revised to Bypass this past March. Sorry I don't have more specific answers to your questions, Good luck with your continued journey!
  15. IF anyone has had him as their surgeon I was curious on your experience. Did he make you feel comfortable? How was the surgery? Any complication? I have just made an appointment with him from what I have read about him he is one of the best in the area I'm just a little nervous and want to know what to expect.

    Surgery with children?

I understand the desire to just get it over done with. But, I'll echo what others have said. If complications arise, even a minor one could send your household into a tizzy. God forbid something major happens, but it's a real possibility. This is a major surgery that comes with major risks. It's easy to lose sight of that since we all just want to be healthy again so badly. As hard as it is to wait, I think your whole family will do better in the long run if you stagger your surgeries. Once you make that decision though, the next hurdle is deciding who goes first. My husband also wants to have the sleeve but we agreed that I would go first for two reasons: 1. I have more obesity health issues than he does and 2. I am more prepared to make the necessary lifestyle changes post-surgery. My recovery will be very telling for him as he'll either be scared off by it or it will give him the reality check he needs to be more successful with his own surgery. Good luck to both of you!
  17. Hi, I had gastric bypass in 2006 if the sleeve was available I would have chosen that one. I am scheduled July 31for a revision and I am very nervous as well considering this is my second time around. It is expected to be nervous but you will be fine. I had some complications after my surgery but I survived. You will be very happy with your new weight loss. Looking at your picture you don't look like your really overweight.

    Surgery with children?

i'd stagger your surgeries. Complications are real. They happen. I understand wanting to go through it together...and you still will....but I'd space your surgeries apart. One partner is the patient, one is the caretaker....then you switch roles. You're still doing it together. I would suggest you get help for your household, even doing it staggered. Twins are a lot of work. Cutting down from two caretakers to just one....is a huge difference.
  19. Creekimp13

    Do tired of vomiting

What you're going through needs to be addressed immediately by the doctor. I am very concerned about your hydration. The symptoms you're describing are not a typical experience in any way. To me, they suggest you could possibly have a stricture or another issue that needs correction. Many people never vomit after surgery...not even once. What you're describing sounds so horrible. I'm so sorry you're having these complications and hope you get some relief and get the situation addressed and corrected as soon as possible. I'd like to shake your doctor and his staff.

    Surgery with children?

Some people have smooth sailing all the way through BUT some have complication after complication. That is a possible outcome you must consider (squared) and then factor in twin infants... You will require some level of help but no telling until after surgery . After surgery you need to spend alot of time focusing on your recovery. Your children are still very young and will require A LOT of help with everything. Staggering will give the help needed and a realistic view of life after. Safe journey!

    Vitamins

I was told to stop as well, due to potential complications, including thinned blood. If you were told to stop, then stop. I wouldn't risk it personally... but you do what you have to do... I would just consult your surgeon/surgical team before doing anything that could jeopardize your surgery. Good luck!

    Picking a surgeon in Mexico

I went through several Medical Tourism companies and researched their physicians and pricing. First and foremost, I have to explain that I work in hospital administration, and knew what I wanted in a surgeon and follow-up care. Many of the Med Tourism Agencies have comparable pricing. Some more because of the volume of Bariatric surgeries they’ve done. For me, I knew I wanted a specialist, particularly a gastroenterologist. While a Bariatric Clinic and their physicians would be ideal in the U.S., you’re not going to get the same pre-op and post-op care they would offer from Mexico. So, I wanted someone who specializes in that part of the body, particularly familiar with your esophagus and stomach. (These are the areas most doctors damage if you experience complications). Dr. Jorge Reyes Mendiola was a known gastroenterologist, and only does select surgeries, not like the others who run a conveyor belt. He sees 3 patients at most. Trust me, you do not want to be at the end of that line, no matter how quick and easy it seems. While I did not expect to hear from them again post-surgery, I have heard from the office every week for the next 4 weeks. Plus, they are a text away, and very responsive. I know this is long-winded, but I did all the research in the US, before I turned to MX. Lastly, Jet Medical offers a nutritionist post-care. I can’t tell you enough how many of these boards you will find with people with no clue how to take care of this new tool and maintain the weight loss or address a stall. Hope this helps. Wishing you luck on your journey!

    Hi

Hi everyone. I am new to this forum. I decided to join because I need to talk to people that are currently in the same boat I am. I am 32 years old and I had gastric sleeve surgery on February 5, 2018. I’m 5’4”. My starting weight was 261 and I currently weigh 212. I feel like I am a slow loser, but maybe that’s because I weigh myself every day so by the end of the week it feels like forever. Lol. My surgery and recovery were great. I had no complications and no issues whatsoever regarding the procedure. I could not be happier with my decision except I wish I had lost a little more weight by now. I hope to meet some of you and get some good tips and have some like minded people to talk to! Thanks for reading!

    Flying to Tijuana in April

Alex, what made you choose the mini-bypass over regular gastric bypass? But back on topic: I had sleeve surgery in Tijuana with Dr. Garcia of Tijuana Bariatrics. I liked him, and had no complications, but I have not been wildly successful losing weight. I considering a revision surgery.
  25. Hi. I am new here. I am looking for recommendations for gastric sleeve doctors in Tijuana. My insurance is giving me fits and I just can't wait any longer. I have researched several doctors and also several US companies that connect you with gastric sleeve doctors in Tijuana. If you have had a sleeve in Tijuana, please let me know everything you went through. Good and Bad. Who you used. Did you go alone or bring a companion. Any complications? How did you pay? Would you recommend a friend? So far I have heard of a Dr Ponce, Dr. Rodriguez, Dr. Fernando Garcia any others or any experience with any of these doctors listed? Thank you!!!!
