    San Antonio, Texas

I lived in San Antonio for ever I wished that I could have had my surgery there with Dr Michael Seger. I love his office. I'm in Abilene now had my lap band done with dr Einspanier. Just before his office closed. His patients were left to find new doctors without any help. I found Dr Warnock who took over my care and did my revision. Very happy with dr Warmock.
  2. I guess I will have to try something new now. I had my surgery Friday and they were unsuccessful doing the revision because of so much scar tissue from my perforated ulcer in 2012. He was able to repair my hiatal hernia but that’s all. Not sure how I’m feeling about it yet. I’m sure it will sink in sooner or later. Thanks for the reading references too.

    rebanding after erosion?

The statistics of something happening to a 2nd band once theres complications from the first are really high. I wouldn't risk it. My band slipped last year and 5 weeks ago I had a sleeve revision. Lost 18 lbs of the 30 I gained over the last year that it was slipped. Only about 26 lbs left to goal. Glad to be rid of my contraption (as my hubby called it!). Took my dr 30 minutes to dig it out of my stomach. It was totally embedded. Good luck to you!
  5. Ughhh okay so today has not been my best day... I don't know WTF is wrong with me I know I'm not actually hungry... Quick backstory - Open RNY 03/2002 - revision via Endoscopic Soft Tissue Re-approximation to cinch stoma/pouch 02/09/16. I have been doing spot on fantastic the last 3 weeks and its like I lost my mind today. I'm on a soft modified diet meaning I should be introducing more solid foods as my pouch can manage it but I'm pretty scared to so I'm still eating mainly soft foods... Breakfast - 10oz chocolate Caramel Protein shake (33g protein) with FF lactose free milk Snack - 1 Hershey dark chocolate sugar free miniature Bottle of Water 16.9oz lunch - Ricotta Bake Mexican style (19g protein) Bottle of water 16.9oz Snack - Oikos triple zero banana cream Greek yogurt (15g protein) ANOTHER snack and I don't know why but I inhaled a Pure Protein Bar (20g protein) I have dinner prepped its a 1/3c portion of blended "Shepard's pie" kind of - just the beef, gravy & edamame (whirled in the blender a little) that I'll cover with cheese instead of mashed potatoes (26g protein). If I eat the dinner I'm sitting @ 1,063 calories 113g protein, 75 carbs 37 fat & 27 sugar. You'd think with all this protein I'd be stuffed - maybe I shouldn't have dinner and just drink a ton of water? Any advice?

Well, it had been a good 24 hours!!! 1. Yesterday I found out that my revision surgery will be on June 10th!!! (Bye- bye to this broken lap-band!) 2. I tried a sample of the Chike protein iced coffee. DELICIOUS!!!!!!!!! What a way to start the weekend!!!!!!!!!!

    Possible revision?

@@Steven1954, thanks for the additional input. The best to you. @@waterwoman, it's interesting how many ways there may be to go about getting revision covered. I hope the person who handles the insurance papers in my practice knows about my plan. The book is organized in a way guaranteed to make a person homicidal, so to speak.
  8. I just had a revision from sleeve to rny on 12/12 due to horrible reflux and barrets esophagus. I started at 180 and have lost 20 pounds. I had a horrible experience in the hospital and ended up having internal bleeding, needed blood transfusion... my oxygen level drop down to mid 50’s a few times. I stayed in the hospital for 5 days. I’m still quite swollen and bruised so I think I will lose a few more once I’m completely healed.

    Help! VSG or Bypass

Definitely a good choice having the bypass especially if you already have issues with acid reflux. I’m getting ready to have a revision from sleeve to gastric bypass because of the terrible reflux I have.

    Help! VSG or Bypass

These are my thoughts, coming from a patient going through a revision from Lap Band to Bypass... If you ultimately go with Sleeve, you may encounter complications like GERD years down the road. This is due to the Sleeve being a high pressure system. The high pressure created in the pouch puts pressure on the esophageal sphincter and causes it to fail, which results in GERD. It often takes years to manifest, and when it happens, it ultimately forces your hand to revise to Bypass. That's my current situation. When I got Lap Band, I was scared of Bypass. But as I've investigated more about Bypass, I understand now why it is the Gold Standard of weight loss surgeries. It's been around longer than other weight loss surgeries, so it has been perfected over the years. I wish I would've chosen Bypass from the beginning and saved myself a lot of unnecessary complications and I never made it to goal weight either. As for being self pay, and Bypass costing more... imagine a few years down the road having untreatable GERD and having to have a second surgery. So think of the increased expense of Bypass now as an investment if you choose to go that route. If you're having doubts about your PCOS causing cravings, Bypass might help to keep your eating on track, if you're a patient that gets dumping. I'd say you should trust your instincts. Best wishes on your journey!

I will be 64 in March

where do i start, When i got my gallbladder out in 1990 my surgeon told me to avoid all fried foods and fat as i may gain weight but I didn't listen and through the years gained up to 120kgs at work all the staff were being cruel and picking on my weight which had me look into weight-loss surgery so i had my first lap-band in 1999 and after three surgeries due to the lap band prolapsing three times i asked my surgeon to refer me to another surgeon who does permanent weight-loss surgery so in 2003 I underwent the DS with that i had major problems with malnutrition and i ended up having gastroparesis with it due to the surgeon severing my vagus nerve, I also ended up having a bowl prolapse due to the constant loose stool and involuntary muscles wanting to evacuate what was not there. i was having Iron infusions every three months and having to take D3 injections and other injections of Vitamins intramuscular due to malabsorption. I also had a bowl strangulation and obstruction due to two abdominal hernias and then finally had to have the surgery revised to the rny due to bile reflux and also due to the sleeve of the ds stretching into an hourglass due to a stricture in the center and the food not passing through due to the gastroparesis. and now with the RNY i'm having more problems my eyesight isn't great my thyroid within the last two months has declined due to the fact my body does not absorb the iodine from food the bile reflux has not resolved nor has the gastroparesis of which i was assured would resolve due to having the RNY surgery. not to mention the brain fog and tiredness that i experience on a daily bases. And here you were thinking that you were alone in your situation, I think that most people do not speak up when things go wrong because they don't want to be picked on and because their doctors make them feel like everything is either in their heads or that the problems that arise are their fault for not adhering to the guidelines etc. Hey I'm just glad i found someone else who isn't afraid to speak up about their complications, I hope that you get better soon and get some sort of normal life back. (we just don't realize that weightloss surgery has it's own complications down the line and that it doesn't rear its ugly head till many years down the road especially with malabsoption and malnutrition due to intestinal bypass)

    Nights in hospital

My doctor told me to plan on 2 nights because mine was revision surgery but I went home the next day because I felt fine
  13. Hi mike54, I have 'choking' from the band at night and a lot of vomiting during the day and night. I had gastroscopy and it proved that my esophagus is all pebly instead of smooth. The Doctor took biopsy and luckily I don't have cancer. He loosened the band and suggested revision surgery. Now it is up to me to decide whether it will be sleeve or mini GBP. Did you have revision and if you did how is it with the reflux now?
  14. If you want a doctor that has done a lot of revisions- Dr. Barker would be high on the list in DFW. He's a HUGE Practice, but he's a good guy and a dang good surgeon. Dr. hodges who works with him actually took out my gallbladder in 07 before she was working with Dr. Barker and she was AMAZING!
  15. Ashelaine, that sounds like she could be my clone! I had band then I had to have band to band revision and now I am considering band to sleeve. Did she have complications with it being in one surgery and is she glad she did it? I getting mixed reviews LOL Almost all say they would do the sleeve again but some say you still have the in your throat feeling instead of feeling full... And today I met someone that suffered from dumping syndrome with the sleeve!!
  16. Ohhh Debra that's terrible!!! Have you already had the revision? Band to sleeve and where you happy with Dr.provost as a surgeon? It's sad when you have a good doc an the staff sucks. At least with the sleeve there isn't much follow up unlike the band. I'm glad he didn't try to convince you to so to the GB. Do you happen to know how many band to sleeve revisions he has done and did he do it in one surgery for you? I'm sorry you are having trouble with staff maybe you should ask Dr.P who HE would like to refer too since his staff doesn't have an answer for you.
  17. I used Dr. Nick Nicholson in Plano. He has done a lot of revisions. I don't know how many total though from band to sleeve. He did not do my band. I wanted a new surgeon for my revision. I researched him and went to his free seminar. Then due to crappy insurance I worked for 3 years to get approved. I got new insurance this year and within 2 months jumping through insurance hoops, I was revised. Also his staff was great too. Who ever you choose, my only advice is to find a doctor you trust. There were some red flags with my lap band doc but they didn't rear their ugly heads until after surgery. If I had listened to my instincts, I would not have gone with that lap band doc. I was 100% satisfied with Dr. Nick.

    Hello all.

I am not scheduled until May 11th, but so far I am so confident in my choice with Dr. Garcia that even I can't believe it!! I am paying $5500, but that is with consideration for my revision, so I have heard that others are paying even less!! I will definitely keep in touch and let you know how it goes in May, but I have heard the most amazing things from so many people who have used him and I researched quite a few different doctors before settling on him! I will keep my fingers crossed for you that you guys can get a house this year too. My husband and I were able to get a house again after he had to foreclose on his old home due to his divorce. My family had to help us, but the feeling of having a place of our own for our kids to grow up in has been such a wonderful feeling!! I really hope you can add that to your whirlwind blessing windfall!!
  19. Dr Aceves did my band to sleeve revision about a year ago. Glad you did so wonderfully. Like you I had very little pain and couldn't believe it was so uneventful. I don't mind flying but was really surprised that it was only 3 days after surgery and I felt no pain on the flight and it was from San Diego to FL with a 3 hour layover in Dallas. Good Luck on your journey.
  20. It really depends on your insurance. You can call and they'll be able to tell you what you need to do, as would a surgeon's office. I have United Healthcare for the Railroad, and I wouldn't have had to do ANYTHING other than call and make an appt for the surgeon, and they would have done a few typical preop screens to get it removed. (I'm getting a revision to a sleeve though, so I have to do everything all over again.) GOOD LUCK!

To tell or not to tell

I had lap band about 4 years ago and lost about 55 1bs. and then was just stuck. In December my band slipped and I had to have all my fluid taken out and was told that I needed it removed and revised to something else. I felt like a failure with the lap band at this point and that I did it to myself. I really didn't know what to do because I knew if I had it taken out and nothing else done that I would gain weight back really quick. I made the decision to go ahead and revise to the sleeve. I was really hesitant to tell anyone I was afraid that they would just tell me to have lap band removed and go on a diet. I finally just decided to tell all my friends the decision I made and all was so supportive. I just had the surgery two weeks ago and so I am going through that head hunger but hopefully I made the right choice.

    Hello all.

Oh Amie I am so excited for you! What an exciting year!!! And if that baby can hold on one day longer it could share my birthday!! I know one of my biggest motivating factors in revising my complete flop of a band to a sleeve (aside from its many complications) is my desire to be a more active and parent! Congratulations on your sleeve, your marriage (shameful that we have to put significance on it being legal, but so exciting all the same) and even more so, the beginning of your family! Such an exciting time! Look forward to watching your progress!!!

To tell or not to tell

I shared with my immediate family and in-laws that I was going to have the band surgery. My mom had hers the year before me so they were fine with it. We had only been here about 6 months when I had surgery, and I had only made 1 "friend". She wasn't as supportive because she dropped some pretty snarky comments. Anyways, when the complications with the band became too much, and I got serious about a revision, I told only my husband, and that one friend. I didn't tell my mom because she is that typical band patient that tried to blame me for my complications and unwillingness to stick to the band rules. We found out my husband was deploying during my research stage, and I decided to proceed with the revision. I told my mom and all of the comments started. We flew my in-laws to FL from WV to stay with me during my revision since my husband was deployed. I had a helluva surgery, and recovery. I lost that one friend during my recovery which wasn't a loss in the end. When I started making friends here through our spouse's club, and other volunteer opportunities, I was open and honest about my revision. It was kind of difficult to hide the fact that I was dropping 15lbs a month. I saw these women often, we were eating out socially weekly, and I needed support. Through my sharing, my friend is having sleeve surgery next week with the same surgeon that assisted on my revision, and has taken over my care since my surgeon has been deployed for the last 6.5 months. I have not received any flack from the women that I associate with now. They are beyond supportive, at first our conversations revolved around my weight loss and surgery, but now they realize that I'm fairly "normal". I tell people that genuinely want to know. I don't hide it, but I don't scream it from the rooftops. I don't tell waiters/servers in restaurants when I only eat a small portion. I think it's a personal decision, and sometimes we are guilty of giving people just enough information about our lives to be dangerous. I feel like I gave my mom the ammo she needed to blast me. I've learned over the years to not volunteer information. If you feel like people won't be supportive, don't tell them.
  24. Hi everyone, I was a low BMI bandster. I had good weight loss success with my band, but it has been a journey. Fills, unfills, episodes of being so tight I had to have an immediate unfill, etc. About 6 months ago I started having symptoms associated with a slip and the upper GI tests I've had done definitely show a slip. My choices are: remove lap band (which is not what I want to do), reposition lap band, or revise to a sleeve or bypass. I work for one of the largest health care providers in the St. Louis area and my insurance will cover a revision, but only with a provider in their network. Guess how many bariatric providers there are in the network? 2! One is the surgeon who did my lap band and he only does lap band. The other surgeon is currently not doing revisions and won't be for potentially another year. I could go to another surgeon and do self-pay, but that seems crazy to go through that again. I was self pay for my lap band surgery because my BMI was not high enough and I just recently paid all those bills off. I am also leery of the sleeve surgery because it is so permanent. Lap bands can always come out. I feel like the decision is being made for me. I prayed for assistance making this decision and all arrows are pointing me this way. Has anyone had success after a lap band slip, then reposition? I am worried about it happening again in another three years.
  25. I'm in Alabama. Banded in November 2008. Was approved yesterday by insurance for revision to Sleeve due to complications with the band. Dr. Miles did my band and will also be doing the revision.
