    Lower BMI - Skin/recovery

My BMI was 37.3 on day of surgery, today it's 23.5. It's just over 6 months since surgery. I'm 5'6". I have very little loose skin, but my bum and thighs are saggy. My tummy has a little excess skin, but I've had three children so I think I'd have that regardless of weight loss. It's nothing I can't hide under clothes. Boobs are another matter, but again, I breastfed my children for a total of 7 years so that has also had an impact. I only have 5.6kg to lose to hit my goal weight, and then I'll be concentrating on toning and building muscle, 6 months after that I'll be looking at plastics. Definitely a breast lift, maybe a tummy tuck but I don't feel like I need one at this stage. I think it comes down to genetics and luck!
  2. Hi rachedo. NovaLuna is right. I was 250 something at my heaviest and I am only 4ft 11. The first time I got to close to the weight that I am now was many years ago after 1st baby and I did not have loose skin. This time around with this rapid weight-loss I have a ton of loose skin. I will say I have been told by weight watchers (in the past) and by my nutritionist that you will lessen the chances of loose skin with a slower rate of weight-loss and with a higher mass of muscle. But there are no guarantees, you don't know until you know, meaning until you personally go through weight-loss yourself.
  3. Honestly, I'm not sure. Everyone's bodies are different and their skin bounces back different. I'm 32 and my starting weight was 385 with a BMI of 62. I'm 268 now with a BMI of 43 and a current weight loss of 117 pounds... I have a LOT of loose skin, but that's expected for someone of my size and the fact that I've been over 300 pounds for almost half my life (Literally. I was 303 at 17! -_-"). My guess though is that yes, it'll probably be similar to the post pregnancy loose skin. Though you'll probably have some in different places then before such as some loose skin on your arms (which can be minimized with exercise) or legs (again, exercise) or even where your bra rests under your arm pits (it bugs the crap outta me!). But in the end... I'd take the loose skin over the fat any day of the week!
  4. I have my first appointment next week and I am struggling finding any past posts with similar questions. I am 5'3 and 216 right now with a BMI of 38. My insurance cover's the surgery with other health conditions, two that I have so I am hopeful that I will be approved. I carry most of my weight in my stomach and butt and I am wondering what people with similar size had as far as loose skin? I am 38 years old if that helps. Pre- kids I was always very thin, about 120. post kids ( got up to about 220 during pregnancy) i was able to maintain 150-165 for many years, and had mild loose skin from pregnancy. In the last 3-5 years, I have gained weight every year it seems till I am at my heaviest now, close to 9 months pregnant size. I guess my question is, should I expect the same skin I had after pregnancy to weight loss as I would hope to loose about the same amount? Hope that was clear as mud.

    Skin issues?

That’s really interesting. I realized that my skin was so much dryer lately. I didn’t realize it could be because of surgery. Just another thing to add to the list of ‘weird things that have been happening to me because of surgery’ 😂
  6. Wow! Thank you so much for all the points! Hair loss was definitely something I thought about too, but I take biotin vitamins anyways so I figured I would just keep on those. You mentioned you don't deal with dumping and I am curious - are there foods you personally can't eat any longer? Not even just for that but in general. I've seen a variety of foods tossed around that people couldn't eat after - pasta being a big one. I'm italian and I think that may be impossible 🤣 I figure it depends on a person to person basis though. I figure loose skin I would likely get taken care of regardless because I wouldn't like looking at it, but I know I'd rather look at loose skin than the fat I have now!
  7. I'm still pretty new to this (4 months post OP), but this has definitely been the best decision I've ever made with regard to weightloss. I had GERD prior to surgery (which is why I chose RNY vs Sleeve), and it's completely gone! I haven't even needed a TUMS since having the surgery! I haven't had dumping, but I also don't crave sweets anymore which seem to cause people to dump. I have had "the slimes" which is when I eat just one bite too many, and I end up hypersalivating, and sometimes throwing up. That hasn't happened in over a month though, probably b/c I'm better at listening to my body. As for loose skin, I'm sure I will have it, and I look forward to getting a tummy tuck/boob job someday!!
  8. I had GERD prior to surgery, which is why I went with bypass. It completely went away for 2-3 years. It did eventually start up again, but it's a much milder case than it was pre-surgery. Basically, bypass often (but not always) greatly improves if not outright cures GERD. Note the word "often". It doesn't always, but usually, yes, it does (and I do know many people for whom it went away permanently). not all RNY'ers dump. The statistic that seems to be thrown around a lot is that 30% of us do, but I have no idea if there's any hardcore medical research behind that number. But just based on what I've picked up just hanging around bariatric forums for the last six years, that sounds about right. I've never dumped and I know a lot of other RNY'ers who don't. If you're one of the ones who do, you can control that through diet by limiting or avoiding sugar and fatty things (which we all should be doing ANYWAY). re: loose skin. I have worked with pre-op groups in my bariatric clinic for the last three years. Loose skin (and hair loss) has got to be the number 1 worry of most of them. I, too, worried about those things incessantly when I was a pre-op and early post-op. I would be willing to bet the farm that the vast majority of us who are out a ways wonder why we wasted even one brain cell worrying about this. I would take loose skin any day over weighing almost 400 lbs again. ANY DAY! I have since had mine removed because I got tired of looking at it, and I got tired of hearing it slap up against my body when I exercised, but it was very easy to hide in clothes and I'm pretty sure no one knew it was there besides my husband. Here is a picture of me before I had skin surgery. Notice the loose skin? And I had a lot of it since I lost over 200 lbs.
  9. My surgeons office makes it a policy to remove the gallbladder if you still have yours (I didn't as I had mine removed 8 years ago) as it causes problems after surgery. If your surgeon left yours they really should have given you some kind of meds. If you start having gallbladder issues, trust me, you'll know. I got so sick when mine went bad that the only thing I could keep down was water. I threw up everything else and ended up loosing 30 pounds in a week! Of course after I had my gallbladder removed I gained back that 30 pounds with interest...-_-". Also, it was really painful whenever I ate. Stabbing pains in my side, kind of painful. So yeah, if yours goes bad, you'll definitely know!
  10. You're going to have loose skin issues, no way around it if you're planning on loosing the amount of weight you want. I've already lost over a hundred pounds and have another 88 to go reach my goal and can only imagine the sheer amount of loose skin I will have. But, it's still worth it! My insurance covers skin removal after a year of maintenance so I'm not stressing about it. It's annoying, yeah, but trust me you'll be so much healthier after loosing the weight! The two areas that bug me most are my upper arms, and the loose skin on my chest area a bit under my armpits (where your bra rests). I had a co-worker of mine suggest shapers as she had gastric bypass and she said it helps a bit with the loose skin issue and said it even reduced hers over time. She said the body suits with hooks in the front are best as they fit tighter and that's what you need. I figure I'll look into that eventually, but I've yet to do so...
  11. Hi all~ As you can tell I'm super new. I've just started the process for bypass surgery (I picked a spectacular time, huh?). I've been reading this site up and down, but it's a bit difficult sorting through stories and advice from people who have had different surgeries than bypass. What's some things you wish you knew about post surgery and life after? If you didn't have the insurance mandated wait period, how long was it from first appointment to surgery date (if it makes a difference, I'm going through Beth Israel in Boston) And for those who suffered from GERD prior - did the surgery actually help? I've seen a lot of the things about dumping syndrome and problems with lack of nutrients, but would you do it again if you could? One of my biggest concerns is loose skin due to rapid weight loss - has that been a big issue for anyone here? Thank you all!
  12. Well I hope everyone is surviving through this virus situation. i felt like updating everybody I'm pretty much 6 months post op give or take a few days! This has been an incredible journey to say the least. Had the RNY BYPASS surgery and I believe it completely changed my metabolism; I've lost so much weight and it's like I can't gain weight. i actually started my own pre-op diet roughly 8 months ago way before surgery and my highest weight was 322lbs. I was weighed in for surgery day at 257lbs. Over the past few weeks I've pretty much hit maintenance I believe and I'm weighing in between my lowest day of 168 and my normal days of 170/171 obviously weight can fluctuate from day to day. I am gobsmacked how well I've done and how good I look but I know I really need to start to tone up and build muscle. My main focus from Day 1 was to just shed the weight off lose the LBS and I've done that. Never thought I'd get this far. In the past few weeks I've really tested my metabolism over Easter I had some chocolate and some crisps and a few alcoholic beverages but it appears not to make much difference at all to my weight but obviously I'm back on track still logging my food intake most days and some days still using protein shakes when I'm busy or not that hungry literally 6 months post op some days I'm still not hungry..... So in summary I've lost max 154lbs since day 1; 8 months ago and in the 6 months since surgery day I've lost 87-88lbs and I'm feeling great and it's weird people now telling me I've got to stop losing weight LoL. I'm finally the slimmest one in my group of friends. People treat me differently in general. I've included a photo it's not the best angle as it's hard to take photos of myself but you get the general idea considering the amount of weight I've lost there's not a huge amount of excess skin the main area is my lower belly abdominal area!!! I really truly believe my metabolism and the way my body processes food has completely changed and it's an amazing feeling!! MIKEY xxx Feeling great 35 years young
  13. I swear... my saga never ends. Got the good news about my kidney. Then I got the latest blood results back. My labs were WONDERFUL. Except for my TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) level. It was high enough to order more tests to see what was going on, and to see if I had Hashimoto Disease (and another autoimmune but can't remember what). Seriously? My TSH has NEVER been high before. And the rest of my labs were so perfect I would have thought that they ran someone else's blood instead of mine... except that bilirubin level was still high (but not quite as high). So... back to the lab again. More calls with my nurse practitioner. Turns out my newer thyroid related tests were all fine. WHEW! Another close call. So... bilirubin still high (may never know why), but my liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen, stomach, intestines (the parts they could see), Right kidney, and my thyroid are all in good shape. Nasty scarring on my left kidney, but otherwise fine. My EKG is back to normal. No UTI after my last round of antibiotics. Oh... skin checks are usually normal too (had 2 cancerous lesions removed but not the bad kind). Knee seems to be doing better after an injury. I do have some mild osteopenia. I guess that just leaves my lungs that haven't been checked out recently? Hmmm... wonder when I will have a bad asthma flareup... seems like that will be next LMAO. Oh.... and my brain hasn't been checked, but I did pass my psych eval well enough to qualify for surgery, so I guess that is good. But really... what is next? LMAO Grateful everything is good news, but boy am I sick of doctors visits! I need to reschedule my dermatologist 6 month check, and my eye exam, then I have my nutritionist and surgeon nurse practitioner visit in the next 2 months back to my FNP and cardiologist in the fall... but after that I would really love to have yearly visits only! And to fire a couple docs!

    Shapewear?

I'm considering it too, more to hold in my stomach excess skin 😔 https://shapermint.com/?gclid=CjwKCAjwp-X0BRAFEiwAheRuix0Qs4j5fWacE8F1nmi9Mw9H6f0lx5wWi9_RISyfomNwOA32EkkjXxoCpOkQAvD_BwE

    Bacon....

did you get to ask your dr. why you can't eat those? It seems to me that all you use to eat, you should be able to eat. Except for the muffin. I would watch the halos, some times the skin is hard to digest... this is why i get them from the can or cup (no skin). Yogurt is good.... I don't really watch my carbs/sugar in the am and i will burn them off during the day.... this is why i have no worries about eating this yogurt.... I just can't stand the aftertaste in my mouth with the fat free or low fat ones.... https://www.liberteusa.com/products/

    END OF MY ROPE

Hi Mando313, When did you have your surgery and which did you have? I had the same issue in the beginning. Nurses/Dr. did not seem to believe what I was saying when it came to protein drinks, but man I would go all day long and it seemed like I wasn't loosing anything or at the least not as much as I should be in the beginning. For me, I realized I had to do each phase 1 or 3 weeks longer than what was recommended. I even mixed phases. For instance, if I was on the puree phase 3 weeks loner than what was recommended I'd eat one bite of protein that I cooked for my family. Eventually, after I backed off of protein drinks and moved to more solid proteins I tried the premier proteins and never had a problem again. Though it did take a really long time and I got to the point of not even sharing certain information with my nurses/DR. (not recommended) because I was being told things like "protein drinks are not going to give you diarrhea" or "you should only be going #2 once a day". Each person knows their body and each of us should follow Dr. orders but also use some self-common sense and do what is right for us personally. @IAmGrace I felt the same way as I was having a really hard time. This is partially whey once I joined this website I had nothing at all to say because I did not want negative or mean comments about my true feelings about weight-loss surgery. I now think that weight-loss surgery can be a great tool but listening to your DR. along with people that have actually gone through it, especially gone through the same surgery as you, is going to be very helpful and encouraging. In just reading what others have said about the gastric sleeve, the sentiment seems to be almost the same (don't get me wrong, everyone has a different journey or experience but from what I read what you are experiencing seems to be very common with the type of surgery that you got). So, many people has said that there weight-loss was very so in the beginning. I've even seen posts where peoples weight-loss stalled or even went up a bit, but each person, if they have been on the journey for a year or more has said that they lost more weight and although they are approaching their goal slowly, they are now in a place where they no longer regret the surgery because according to them the benefits outweigh the horribleness and slowness in the beginning. I really hope that this gives you some encouragement.

    Gatric Bypass or Sleeve?

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do NOT have a Gastric Bypass surgery! My son had the sleeve done and had severe Acid Reflux and is now doing great! He looks awesome and feels awesome and no longer suffers as bad from GERD which also depends a lot on what your food choices are. I on the other hand had Gastric Bypass surgery and I no longer absorb any nutrients, I suffer horribly from Vitamin Deficiencies ~ AND Malabsorption, i have so much skin hanging off me, lost most of my teeth and hair and have osteoporosis, hypersomnia, ... diagnosis that I didn’t have previously to having this surgery. I can’t get any doctors to help me. I have been begging for vitamin infusions because I don’t absorb anything in pill or gummy forms. I feel like I’m loosing my fight at this point. The surgery was in 2006. I’m so tired, never have a drop of energy, I live in a recliner, I can’t go shopping or out anywhere because I have no energy ever. I’m literally dying because of that surgery. PLEASE don’t do it!

Hey good lookin' whatcha got cookin?

Easter dinner comprised of one lamb chop with mint apple jelly, roasted green beans and ¼ baked white potato with crispy skin. Six banana wheels with a smug of natural peanut butter and peanuts on top for dessert. Was so excited to eat a baked potato and lamp chop in over 16 months... I forgot to take pictures! We did take pictures of our walk afterwards in the preserve behind our home. Easter basket for mother-in-law on lock down in her memory care facility. Any favorite Easter dinners out there to post?

    January 2020 Surgery Folks

Hello All, Been busy sheltering in place. Not fun at all, but it is working. I find I'm looking for something to eat all the time. I'm trying to keep busy working on projects/crafts, but I keep feeling I want something to eat. I am continuing to loose weight, but only .5, .2, .4 at a time....a little disappointed. I started at 235 day of surgery....12 weeks later I am at 200....I am soooo looking forward to breaking 199.... Today I had chicken for dinner and.....I just spit up a bit, it was sitting at the top of my stomach and had pain.....was fine with it before....not now....And yes I chewed it a lot. I will most likely go back to soft foods and soups....I seem to do really well with them. Stay healthy everyone[emoji846][emoji846][emoji846] Sent from my SM-G960U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Collagen

There are different kinds of collagen. You have to see which ones are in the powder or supplement for which concern. Some kinds are better for skin and hair, others for joint issues. Overall, I think some people say to stay away because it can be hard on your stomach and it isn't considered a protein for us. As a supplement, as long as you can handle it and it addresses your concerns, I would think it is ok. I am taking it for the skin/aging issues. I feel since I have lost the weight from surgery, I notice more signs of aging.
  22. Hope this info helps! You comes dry and you boil it with cinnamon sticks, cloves, and pineapple skin. Once it’s done put it in the fridge and when it’s cold you add lime juice and sweetener of your choice. It’s sooo good😍 the last pic is what it looks like when it’s done. You can top it off with chopped apples. The drink is called chicha morada..... and no, it tastes NOTHING like corn I have been wondering the same thing. Haven’t seen her in in a while. I sent her a couple PM and haven’t heard bk. I hope she and her family are all ok.

    Bacon....

I guess I am the exception, but I was not told to not eat bacon or sausage; I pretty regularly have 1 turkey sausage link with my breakfast. It only has 4 grams of protein, but 4 grams for 35 calories is a pretty big protein hit. I try for about 15 grams (or more) of protein per meal/snack. You could try a link or 2 of turkey sausage and some cream of wheat with some plain protein powder added to get a higher protein breakfast. By the way, I also make various dishes using Italian style turkey sausages; turkey chili, Cajun style sausage and beans with cauliflower rice, or a tomato and sausage crumble over spaghetti squash with some parmesan cheese sprinkled on top. I am 2 months post sleeve. I have lost 23 pounds since surgery, and 33 pounds including the 3 weeks of pre surgery diet. I am happy with my weight loss, it is not the huge numbers some people have, but I look at an average of 3 pounds a week as a good rate. I have not "cheated" since the surgery, but the rules from my team are pretty loose; hit your protein goals, hit your fluid goals, and then fill in (if you can) with fruits and vegetables.

    Hair loss

I take 10,000 MG of Biotin but I have read that it really doesn't do much. That's really cool that your in-laws sent you some oil. India is known for having wonderful oils for hair, skin, and cooking! I wash my hair about every 4-7 days. I have very curly hair. It is around 3b or 3c curl category.
