    Back Pain when walking

Hello . I am sorry to hear that you are experiencing back pain and difficulties after your surgery. It can be frustrating to not be able to enjoy activities and experiences because of the discomfort. I can offer some general suggestions that may be helpful. First, it is important to share your concerns and symptoms with your doctor or health care provider. They have access to your medical history and can give you personalized advice based on your specific situation. They may want to perform additional examinations or tests to better understand the cause of your persistent back pain. In the meantime, consider exploring other forms of transportation or assistance to minimize the strain on your back. This could involve the use of mobility aids such as a cane or walker, or the use of a wheelchair or other accessible options if necessary. In addition, talk to your doctor about seeing a physical therapist or rehabilitation specialist who can guide you through exercises and techniques to strengthen your back muscles and improve your mobility.

    Nausea made better by eating

i get nauseous if i am hungry. I also get very hangry!!! If I am not going to be able to eat for a long while, i will at least drink a protein shake to help with the hunger. I am only 5 weeks out. I try to stay on an eating schedule of 3 times a day and a small snack of fruit in the afternoon and a protein shake a couple hours after dinner

I am SO TIRED. Is anyone else not able to shake the fatigue? I'm just over 3 weeks out, on puree and eating more calories - roughly 500. I usually get my Protein goals in. liquids are hit or miss, but I normally hit that or close on most days. Maybe dehydration? Not sure. But, man, I could sleep all day.

Sorry my phone is doing it’s own thing As I was saying this journey is individual to each of us. Many are experiencing protein burnout, being waterlogged and other temporary bumps and snags. We are not trying to discourage or scare you, it may not happen to you. If it does it let’s you know, you are not alone, and this too shall pass. Best wishes on your journey and thanks for joining us.

    JUNE SURGERY BUDDIES

I totally totally understand exactly what you're talking about mine's is two protein shakes 3 to 4 oz of protein two cheese sticks and plenty of water I'm doing that 2 weeks before my surgery and then a week before my surgery all liquid I started 2 days ago 3 weeks out because I needed to try myself to see if I can do this and it has been the hardest thing I have ever had to do my stomach growling I just been trying to just eat the Popsicles I've only been able to eat the meat in the green beans and it is hard it's a mental thing and today I did fail that's why I started early just to see my mental state of mind but it is hard but don't give up because you have waited so long to go through this and wait for your surgery cuz you don't want to get there and you stay up under longer than normal because your liver hasn't shrunk I'm not sure of what doctor is not requiring anyone to not go through this liquid diet. I googled why it was important to do it. I will get back on track today and stick with it until June 13th thats my day of the my sleeve. Don't give up!!!!!!

    JUNE SURGERY BUDDIES

It’s definitely crazy to see the variations. I’m getting ready for Day 4 and I’ve been pretty good. I do miss chewing food but I haven’t been very hungry and if I get hungry, I will drink more water or I’ll chew ice. So far the Isopure Strawberries and Cream protein has been my absolute favorite shake and is helping a ton.

Food Portions - 6mos post op

Check with your dietician to be sure as different plans have different requirements at different stages as you progress & you may have different needs. Ask how much protein, how much vegetables & how much of any carbs you may be allowed. I was advised by my surgeon that by goal, which was 6 months for me, I’d be eating about a cup of food. He also drew a circle about the size of a side plate. He then drew another circle about half the ‘plate’ (about inner palm size for my medium size hand) & said that’s your protein. He drew a third circle which was about a third of the ‘plate’ circle for my vegetables. I still basically still follow this at 4 years but do about half & half protein & vegetables now. I take 30-45 minutes to eat this. I sometimes experience what I call a slow full signal. It can occur 30 or so minutes after I’ve eaten. I also don’t eat until I feel full but until I’ve had enough & don’t need anymore whether I’ve eaten all my appropriately sized portion or not. Don’t know why it happens though. It’s pretty random but seems to occur more often after breakfast. 🤷🏻‍♀️
  8. Hi folx, My highest weight was 383 lbs in November 2020. I have Sleep Apnea, Hypertension (Managed Well on Meds), Acid Reflux, Mild Hiatal Hernia, and Anomalous Right Coronary Artery. When I had my sleeve surgery in November 2020, my BMI was 50.1. I was on a steady decline post op. I exercise, and somewhat maintain diet. I don’t overeat, but I am also not as religious as immediately following surgery. I have a new insurance provider because of a new job and would like to consider revision to a SADI-S since the gastric sleeve part is already done. And, it’s been shown to have the best long term outcomes. I have bariatric benefits, but I would like to know what I need to do to get my insurance to cover a revision. Also, after speaking to some medical professionals, I learned that with a BMI of 50.1, I probably should have had DS or Bypass to begin with. Why didn’t my doctor talk to me more about other options. I mean I had a great Doc. Best by far. But would have liked to had some more conversations. I know that DS won’t fix the reflux, but I think it could help address the other things. Thoughts?

    Post-OP Liquids

I've experienced that with my past favorite bottled protein shake. It was just too thick and I had to dilute it

Really hoping I haven’t sabotaged myself

First of all, complete agree with this just being a "normal" stall and the best way out is to just stay the course. It will eventually break if you are following your plan and tracking everything as closely as you are now. If you like nuts and want something different for lunch, I usually make myself a salad with 1/4 oz of nuts or seeds (I like pistachios and pumpkin seeds), 2 oz of rotisserie chicken, 1 oz of leafy greens like spinach or baby kale and 1 oz of berries or other lower-carb fruits/veggies like tomatoes, and 1/2 oz of salad dressing (which can be something of your choosing; I like poppyseed dressing but it's a bit sugary. I just allow for it elsewhere in my day). The whole thing is under 300 calories, is well balanced, contatins more protein than the nuts alone and will keep you full longer. Another way to incorporate nuts in a more "substantial" way is to put, again, 1/4 oz of them in a Greek yogurt, maybe also add some kind of lower-sugar fruit like berries. You end up with a meal closer to 20g of protein depending on what brand and quantity of yogurt you're having.

    Any April Surgery Dates?

Had my sleeve surgery on April 18. Still feel hungry all the time too, but get full fast now when eating the soft foods. This threw me off at first because my fantasy before surgery was that I'd never feel hungry again, but what actually happened afterwards was the opposite! On my first week post op appointment I think my Dr. thought I was accusing him of giving me a bad sleeve.. HAHAHA! Today is the day I get to start having "regular" foods as tolerated. I'm very excited and nervous at the same time. Funny thing is, I don't even know where to start, so all I have in the house to eat is the stuff from my soft foods diet! 🙂 Hardest part for me is keeping track of my protein and fluid intake as I have a very busy work schedule and don't always log right away. I know this is a week point and I'm working on it. I lost 19 lbs pre op, and 27 lbs post op so far. Tomorrow is my one month post op follow up. Their scale usually adds a couple extra lbs than mine so I'll have more official numbers tomorrow. Good Luck Everyone! And thanks for posting, the topical conversations found on this site truly help some of us get thru!

I have unflavored protein powder 30 gr protein and clear berry flavored premier protein drink. Considering mixing 1 scoop unflavored with the clear then dividing it between 4 20 oz containers of water to dilute the taste of the berry flavor. That should help meet my liquid and protein goals. If I can handle it

April 25th is my RNY date! Buddies?!

How is my late April surgery cohort faring? I’ve moved into soft foods with some caution but everything is going and staying down. I am trying 3-5 small protein heavy meals a day. Water goals have been harder to meet but the vitamins are ok. I’d forgotten to add B12 supplement until yesterday (!) so just started. My fatigue mid day was bonkers. Hoping the B12 helps. My first surgeon follow up is on Friday, I’m a little data obsessed, measuring and watching scale. Overall feeling more flexible, energetic (mornings) and happy to see the steady loss of 23 lbs since surgery.
  17. I agree with the others: it’s not the cashews. Stalls are a common & important part of your weight loss. It’s when your body shuts down to take stock of your changing needs & then resets things like your metabolism, digestive hormones, etc. They usually last 1-3 weeks. Do look for a lunch that is going to offer more protein (1oz cashews provides only 5g of protein) & includes other foods for a wider variety of nutrients. Try a meat like chicken or tuna, or tofu or a boiled egg, etc. with a small side of salad vegetables, or an omelette, soup, etc. Have a chat with your dietician for some meal ideas

Really hoping I haven’t sabotaged myself

Oh geeze..yes I definitely messed up. It’s pounds not KG’s and I have no idea how to fix that lol. Im still trying to figure this all out I am so sorry. I weigh 203 pounds currently. I think you all have given such great advice!! Love the topping idea and will lean towards a more rich protein source for lunch. The 700 calories were including the cashews. Thank you all so much!!

    Exercise after surgery

All I've done since surgery is walking. 5-10 minutes, starting out, to help prevent blood clots. Second week I increased my time to 15 then progressively increased it to 30. 7 weeks out I shoot for 5xs a week. I don't push myself to power walk. Just leisurely. Now that the weather is nice, I walk outside instead of on my treadmill. I really enjoy the sunshine. Also, I try to drink/eat protein as soon as I'm done. The "Golden Hour" is within 45-60 minutes immediately after exercise when your muscles absorb nutrients more so than any other time of the day. Eventually I want to start weights and buy a Rogue air bike.

    Post-OP Liquids

This post OP liquids stage is kicking my ass. I'm hitting my 64oz fluid & 60g protein goals & able to handle my daily vitamins, going walking but the taste quality of the fluids is moving downhill QUICK 5/24 I'll be 1 week post op and hopefully will be approved for pureed on Friday I already had applesauce by mistake but it didn't mess me up because I stopped when it hurt at first sip
  21. No. That's nuts. You have a BMI of 86, you could be eating half a pound of cashews for lunch and you'd still lose weight. Not as fast as you are now, but at a good clip. That being said, the macro spread (ratio of fats, carbohydrates, and protein) of cashews isn't great. If you're only getting 700 calories a day, you need to be prioritizing protein and nuts aren't really a protein food. They're mostly fat. Again, eating them will not stop you from losing weight, but you need protein to ensure that the mass you're losing trends toward fat mass and not lean mass. Depending on what you're eating throughout the rest of the day, you might want to switch the cashews for a protein-dense food most days.
  22. Hi everyone, I'm finally doing it. I started this process back in 2017 but then hiking and backpacking changed my trajectory. Then COVID caused chaos in my life and here we are again. I'm officially starting this journey and my first official Options class is Wednesday (5/24)! I'm so excited, so anxious and so ready to get this train moving. Tired of stalking all the WLS IGs and YouTube channels. Looking for new friends in Southern CA, with KAISER who are starting or already attending their Options classes. ❤️
  23. I am really hoping I haven’t been sabotaging myself the last 2 weeks. My program cleared me for nuts so for lunch everyday I was just grabbing a portioned out bag of cashews, 1 ounce. I’m 3 months post op and have been in a stall the last 2 weeks. My calories are around 700 a day and I go to the gym everyday for 60-90 minutes. Could the cashews be preventing me from losing weight? I had thought this was something good for us and now I’m not so sure after having read a little on it. Do you think cashews should go into the category of a once every few weeks treat instead of a lunch option?

    May 2023 surgeries

I can’t take anymore of the room temperature liquids so i moved to slightly cold😭 liquids. I did make my own broth and that has helped. I also switched from premier protein drinks to powdered whey protein drinks. My stomach has been able to handle chocolate so far and I’m drinking 4ozs 3xs a day. I also drink water with unjury strawberry sorbet protein mix. I managed to walk a mile and half yesterday. Today is day 5 post op and i feel good. My incisions are starting to itch a bit. Hope everyone is doing well.

I am so fatigued. All I want to do is sleep, but that has been a struggle. I purchased an angled pillow and I’m hoping that helps. @CarolineLittle I’m having the same issue with the broth and jelly. I’ve honestly stopped those 2 due to just the thought making me nauseated. I’ve been trying different protein shakes and that’s somewhat helping, but I’m definitely getting burnt out.
