Throat burns post sleeve
kcuster83 replied to ShoppGirl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Those were the 2 I was on before surgery, my insurance covered both. (Cigna) Correct, if the meds work COMPLETELY then you are safe. No acid in your esophagus to damage it. They were not working good enough for me, I would wake up in the middle of the night literally puking acid which felt like fire. I couldn't do anything to stop it, no matter how many tums I ate I just had to wait it out till it went away. I would stand over the sink and just let acid drain out of my mouth burning every step of the way. it was horrible. Sometimes so bad, I would be hoarse for a few days after an episode. When I had my surgery they found some pretty severe damage to my esophagus and repaired it while they were in there. I am SO GRATEFUL that the bypass seems to have completely eliminated my acid problems. It really is miserable, especially when you had to as bad as I did. I feel for you and hope the meds work and you get relief! -
Weight loss expectations VSG to RNY??
SOHLCRU replied to mi75's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had my vsg in April 2016, I lost 90lbs in 5 months and found out I was pregnant. 😶 Everything made me sick, but when I started eating terrible food, it made my addiction come right back. 2 years after I had my oldest, I had my youngest. Now she is 3 and I have gained just about all of my weight back and its brought back its problems with it. So now I am starting my journey back. Im more conscious about my eating and exercising, and start my nutrionist appointments in June. I want the revision from sleeve to RNY, but we will see how things progress, my husband isnt on board with me getting another surgery, but I am trying to just get myself together the best I can and work my way until I am able to schedule, then see if I can get his support. Im just nervous about how it will all turn out. I have GERD terrible, and PCOS and my doctor is putting me back on metformin. I wanted to have surgery originally to have kids, but I know if I had another chance at being healthy and getting myself back I'll know how I got myself into this situation again and be able to prepare for it not to happen again. Plus I dont want anymore kids. -
Throat burns post sleeve
kcuster83 replied to ShoppGirl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Man, acid reflux /GERD is horrible. Especially if it gets bad. I had it so bad before surgery I was on 2 meds and eating tums daily. This is why I went with Bypass. So far 2 months post op I still have zero acid problems. It is my understanding a lot of people have to get a revision from sleeve to Bypass for GERD resolution. I hope they can control it with meds! -

sounds like GERD. I had that before I had my bypass. -
June 2022 surgery buddies

Congratulations on the surgery date! 🎉 I’m scheduled for June 8! I teach in a school and our Covid positives have been rising lately after months of not having any. I have no idea if masks are helpful, but I have started wearing one again as I see so many kids in a day. I’m having hernia repair, bypass and my gallbladder removed. Good luck to everyone. -
Lots of complications after bypass..... anyone else???
Sunnyway replied to Lem32's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had RNY to RNY revision surgery on 12/21/21. I thought I was fine, slowly recovering, until 10 days later when I started coughing up blood. I was airlifted back to the surgical hospital with a perforated jejunum at the anastomosis and SEPSIS. I had emergency surgery and was close to death for several days. I was in the hospital for 7 weeks and in a rehab facility for 3 weeks. I was discharged with a 15 cm long open surgical wound which is still not entirely healed 3 months later (but getting close). I resumed normal activities after returning home and have no pain from the open surgical wound. I have volunteer nurses who come to my home to do dressing changes, now every other day. Because of three necessary endoscopic procedures looking for leaks or abscesses my anastomosis is stretched and I have no more restriction than I had before the revision surgery. I had lost 70 lbs prior to surgery by cutting out all sugar, flour, rice, white potatoes, processed food. I've lost 25 more since the revision. I've been told to get 90 mg protein daily and to limit my calories to 800--which is VERY difficult. To add insult to injury I'm starting to lose my hair, too. I'm really struggling with cravings in the afternoon and night. We are now considering a prescription for CONTRAVE. Do I have regrets for having the revision surgery? Of course! I wish I had left it alone. I wish my surgeon had aborted the revision when he found I had dense adhesions. However, I'm well now and am approaching a 100 lb weight loss. -
Drinking soda ever again would be a huge mistake in my opinion. And my surgeons office agreed, they tell us not to. I had the sleeve to bypass and I can tell you one of my biggest downfalls was trying diet soda again when I had the sleeve. Now I’m prepared to say goodbye forever. Can stretch the stomach significantly over time.

6 weeks out - I'm very worried - could I stretch my sleeve with this amount of food??
Kelly Sweetheart replied to bestdecisionmade's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
When I was researching sleeve vs gastric bypass, one of the doctors videos discussed the sleeve procedure and explained the operation in detail. the taller you are the longer the stomach thus the more it can hold. Honestly, we are talking the difference of 1-2 ounces though after the sleeve procedure. I believe his reference picture was a small banana vs a larger banana. -

Hi, Regina: congratulations on your progress. My surgery date is 6:8 for a bypass and hernia repair. I’m 67 years old and hbp is an issue of mine. Your comment about the fatigue, and the coffee interested me as we are close in age, and I can’t imagine myself not liking coffee. 😖 I hope your strength returns and you continue to improve. -
How long were you off work after surgery?
redhead_che replied to healthy granny's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
3 weeks off for a medium demanding job. On my feet back and forth a decent amount. Going back 5/30 with lifting restrictions of no more than 15lbs for one month. My surgeons office states 3-4 weeks for gastric bypass (me) and 2-3 weeks sleeve. -
How long were you off work after surgery?
Healthy4longerlife replied to healthy granny's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had bypass was in the hospital for 4 days, but was able to work after. I pretty much was never in pain. I had a surgery on Tuesday and got home on Friday later afternoon, so went to work on Monday, but I work remotely , so no commute or walking, but I felt up to it if I needed to. But dont be too hard on yourself, if you feel on Sunday like you need more rest, let work know you will probably not be back in until Wednesday, you need to be easy on your body the first few days after surgery. Wishing you good luck and a healthy speedy recovery!!!! -
Super happy but a bit confused
Healthy4longerlife replied to Tami10's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
Its a tough one, but at least for me, I am 5 1/2 months post gastic bypass, so we are around the same time I think I am loosing some of mu build, I was doing some weight lifting before surgery and now train twice a week, and I can lift soo much less than before surgery. Granted I lost 122 pounds, but it means a lot of it was muscle. Also you have skin that stretched and now weight at least 7-8 pounds more than before. So a 210 can be more like a 200 of the old you before your skin ever stretched, I hope this makes any sense !! Good luck! -
I started this journey at 290. I'm six months out from gastric bypass and now weigh 196. The doctor says my goal weight is 160 which means 36lbs to go.The last time I remember being under 200 was when my 20 year old daughter was like 1 or 2. My personal goal is to be at 160 by my birthday in the beginning of October and am working hard to hit that. I was in 19/20 pants and a 2/3x top. Now I am in a 8/10 pants and medium shirt. The thing that confuses me is at 185 when my daughter was little I wore a size 10 but I fit into my 10s starting at 210lb. I just don't know how that works. Don't get me wrong I happy about the fact that my jeans are an 8 and a medium top but not sure how it works Sent from my SM-A716U using BariatricPal mobile app

Nerves and am I choosing right?
oldandtired replied to mrsjo's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You are overthinking, and will worry yourself into the ground. I chose the mini bypass, no regrets yet. Advice? Ask your doc, or your primary and ask them their honest opinion. -
Everyone is different. Some people don't have any dumping ever, some are sensitive to sugar, some to fats, some both sugar and fat (boooo!) And then everyone has different tolerences as well - one person may dump on a small amount of sugar and someone else may be able to tolerate more but can't do, like, ice cream or cake levels of sugar. Your team DEFINITELY should have talked to you about dumping and the possibility of it with gastric bypass/RNY. I'd be a little leery of a bariatric staff that doesn't want to be transparent with you... I'm 3 months out and have yet to have an instance of dumping (knock on wood). I'm just starting now to incorporate some fruit - I also love cherries! I haven't tried them yet though, mostly because I'd never eat the entire bag before it goes bad haha. I've had some pretty fatty things, and I'm very glad I don't seem to be a fats dumper!

Nerves and am I choosing right?
catwoman7 replied to mrsjo's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
they're both good surgeries, and they both have their pros and cons. Malabsorption is rare as long as you keep on top of your vitamins. tooth rotting is also rare. If it were common, we'd see postings about it here, and I almost never see them, even though I've been on this site for seven years. If you're concerned, have a chat with your dentist. Mine said he'd never seen that issue in his patients who'd had WLS, although he'd read about it in the professional literature. As a precaution, he wrote me a prescription for a super-high-fluoride toothpaste to use before I go to bed, and he also does a fluoride varnish on my teeth every six months. He said those would go a long way toward preventing any problems, but to be honest, I think he did it more to placate me than anything else, because I was so concerned about it. But that's fine by me!! I've been super happy with my bypass and would make the same decision if I had to do make that decision again today. -
which surgery did you have? If gastric bypass, I'd suspect a stricture - happens to about 5% of RNY patients, and it's an easy fix. Plus you're in the right time frame for one. In any event, you need to contact your clinic. This isn't normal and they need to figure out what's going on.

Hi, can I get a little guidance please? I had a gastric bypass 6 months ago. I've lost 4 stone so far. I've recently got back from a holiday (where I lost 6lbs) but since I got back its all gone a bit odd (see pic of weekly weigh in). I don't know if this is all normal or if I'm doing something wrong? Am I panicking over nothing? I've got some epic toilet issues (chronic diarrhoea) that Ive got a referral to gastroenterology for so there is that factor. I am also not overly concerned about protein goals, as directed by my nutritionist as my stomach is struggling with everything at the mo. I have low potassium and am due to start vit b12 injections tomorrow. The first weight on the pic is on return from holiday, I fully expected a small gain when I returned as I went back to my normal food and it wasn't as hot. I don't know if I should: A) eat less (I have 3 meals a day, rarely snacks) exercise more C) do both of the above D) stop panicking and wait for my body to catch itself up? Hopefully someone can ease my worries. I'm UK based. Thank you in advance 😊

Nerves and am I choosing right?
SleeveToBypass2023 replied to mrsjo's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I chose the sleeve specifically because I didn't want the possibility (no matter how small) of malabsorption or any of the complications that can happen with bypass. I also have meds that I cannot take in liquid form and cannot crush or break open, so bypass definitely was out for me. Sleeve only required 1 night in the hospital, and since I didn't have any gerd issues, it just felt like the right choice. If you already have gerd or bad reflux, sleeve likely isn't the way to go. The sleeve is known for making that much worse, whereas the bypass is known to get rid of it. -
Nerves and am I choosing right?
Arabesque replied to mrsjo's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Nerves are pretty common prior to surgery, so you aren’t alone in that & it is understandable. It’s a pretty major surgery & you are making changes to your body & your lifestyle. Yes malabsorption is something to continuously monitor after bypass. Regular blood tests will keep you informed of any thing you may lack & they will pick up any specific absorption issues you may have. It will be important to monitor your diet to ensure you’re consuming a range of nutrients & take the vitamin supplements you need. Yes, malabsorption isn’t really an issue with sleeve & you may not need to take vitamins in the long term (I don’t). But eating a balanced diet is always the healthier choice. Some people have posted about dental issues post surgery but not many that I can recall. Could be something that began pre surgery because of dietary choices, be a genetic weakness, or they had pre existing gerd/reflux. Excess acid is a common temporary side effect of surgery but keeping on top of it will help reduce your risk of dental damage - take your PPIs. In three years, I haven’t had an issue at all. We’re all different & we can’t predict how our bodies will react to the changes. All because something may happen, doesn’t mean it will. Not worth focussing on some very low risk maybe. Focus on what will happen: a healthier you. But, as you already have reflux, bypass is really your best option. Why did you choose or were you advised bypass over sleeve in the first place? Those reasons will still be true. All the best. -
February 2019 weight loss buds
gabybab replied to TheMarine79's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
3+ years. Wow! I've never achieved the weight-loss my doctor predicted I would lose. I'm disappointed in myself because I've cheated and not stuck to the plan. I admit I am a foodaholic. I still have a lot of restriction, but have taken to drinking sugary drinks. I have an appointment with my surgeon tomorrow to discuss if I should have a revision. I'm 255 and my lowest was 240. My surgeon thought I would get to 180. I'm embarrassed to see him tomorrow. Has anyone else done a revision? My dr originally wanted me to do the DS and I said no, so I just have the sleeve. I'm probably looking at the same process to get surgery. About 6 months. I'm 57 and feel if I do this surgery it might give me extended life. Hope all of you are doing well in your new life-styles. I'm happy that I've still kept 85 pounds off. 😊 -

I had reflux, so I went with the bypass. I'm now off the proton pump meds and my reflux is well controlled. -
So here I am, finally a week until bypass and I’m a ball of nerves. I’m starting to wonder if I should have the sleeve vs the bypass? Can anyone talk me both sides pro for sleeve vs bypass or bypass vs sleeve? Is this normal? I worry about malabsorption, deficiencies, teeth rotting, crazy things and just think sleeve may be better but then I think I don’t want worse reflux. Just venting or maybe wanting answers.
