    free GNC membership today!

My Nut recommends powder/shakes that are at least 24g Protein and less than 10g Carbs. So I picked up a sample of their new GNC Protien Lean 24, and then some GNC Performance Pro. Both met those requirements and were actually less than 5g Carbs. They are 100% whey Protien, and there are lots of flavors...even unflavored. I found that this route is a bit cheaper than anything else locally. Even Sam's was pretty high, and didn't have much of a selection. Our's is pretty little and no Cosco here. Gotta get ready for the pre-op diet that starts next week. EEK!
  2. Hello All, My surgery date for the Roux en y gastric bypass is 11/1/18. My original surgery date was 10/11/18 in which I completed 11 days of my 3 week pre op diet ( which consists of 4 protein shakes a day, 2 protein bars, 1 small banana, up to 3 servings of sugar free jello, low sodium broth, and of course clear liquids). Now when I first did the diet the first time I followed it very strictly and did not cheat at all. This is now my second time doing the pre op liquid diet which my doctor wants me to do 2 weeks instead of 3 this time around. I "cheated" and had Vietnamese Pho broth only the broth and I am freaking out that I really screwed my self. I haven't deviated from the diet except for that but I noticed my weight loss has plateaued since I did this. Just looking for advise on here since I am freaking my self out so much =(
  3. You will likely need to try several different brands to find one or more that you will like. That's important, as shakes will. Be a part of your life fow awhile. My surgeon advised to only use shakes which have 100% whey isolate Protein, which is considered to be a complete source of protein for bariatric patients. I like GNC products, but there are many others to choose from. I'm certain that other "vets" will chime in with their favorites. Best wishes for a successful journey...
  4. I just received the call my insurance approved me for sleeve surgery. My pre-op appointment is Monday, December 12th. Everything seems to be happening so fast, I'm experiencing many emotions right now. I've had unexpected changes in the last few days that's adding to my options. People that have been here for the journey up until now may not be there with me for these appointments, surgery, and post life. It's been a long road even though things are moving so quick now. I first applied for my program in September 2015. My surgery will likely late January 2017. I'll know for sure this Monday. Sent from my SM-G530T using the BariatricPal App

    Colonic?

Thanks. I also had seena tea. I'm scared to drink the Protein shakes for fear of making it worse. I'm considering a colonic for "immediate relief"

    Vitamins??

I take a multi and calcium with vitamin D (Caltrate plus D). I am to have 60-70G of protein a day eating three meals with protein, then supplementing protein in between meals (protein supplements like shakes and bullets are not to be used to replace a meal.)
  7. No not yet. Pasta makes me sick so I stay away from pasta bread and rice. I've been eating pumpkin seeds now and I was doing protein shakes but my doctor told me to stop it. So I'm trying. It's hard.

    Possible Dumb Question

I never lost any hair. Make sure u take Biotin supplements and get enuf Protein. And the above poster was correct - u can drink an eternal amt of liquids. They go right thru. Thats why u need to b careful with stuff like milkshakes, ice cream, juices, smoothies, etc.... Good luck!
  10. After surgery your stomach can only hold 4ozs, does that mean you can only drink 4ozs at a time as well? How can someone get in all the required Proteins with that little consumption? I am really concerned about hair loss. Being fat is one thing but being fat AND bald as a woman = too much to bear!

    Pre-op diet

Hi, My surgery date is 9/16. I have been on the Pre-op Diet for 10 days. My surgeon requires 2-3 Protein drink per day with 2 high protein meals. I usually start my day with a shake on the way to work. Then at lunch eat a salad with some type of lean meat - and FF dressing. Then about 3:00 p.m. or so I have another Protein Drink. For dinner, I usually eat something grilled - like fish or chicken with a veggie (squash, green Beans, brocolli). Any veggie that is low in carbs. Portion control is important. Stick to whatever 1 serving size is. I have another shake later in the evening if I get hungry. I am using the EAS Advant drinks. You can get them in the grocery stores. They were approved by my surgeon. Eat Slow and chew well at mealtime. That will help get you ready for later in the post op diet. Every surgeon has different requirements. This Pre-op diet is not as restrictive as some. Good Luck, and I hope this helps.

    Great Protein Shakes

PB2 is awesome and u can get it in different flavors like chocolate! I add to my shakes for added Protein and flavor!
  13. What's your preference on unflavored Protein. I had unjury and like it went to the Vitamin shoppe and bought Isopure Just wondering on what ppl like that Doesn't have to be shipped .......
  14. I've started two things - one, I'm taste-testing samples from a number of the Protein powders and Meal Replacements out there. Second, since I'm doing that, I'm pseudo practicing for the pre-op diet. Hey, if I'm drinking the Protein drinks anyhow, I might as well make it useful! What does that mean, exactly? The diet is to use 3-4 Protein shakes during the day, plus one small meal for dinner. Total is not to exceed 870 calories, so while I can use skim milk to mix my drinks, it wouldn't leave a lot for dinner! I'll likely choose the protein powders I can tolerate well mixed with Water, and try to be satisfied with 3 of those during the day, so that I can have around 300-350 calories for dinner, since I'll be looking for dense protein to keep me satisfied overnight. I can, of course, have all the non-caloric liquids I would like during this diet. What I am doing (as of today) is replacing Breakfast and lunch with 2-3 protein shakes during the day. At dinner time, I am not eating with the restricted calories I will be during the diet, but I am trying to keep my portion size to something equivalent to what I will eat in the pre-op diet and focusing as much as possible on protein. I am trying to keep the total day between 1000 and 1200 calories, but I'm not being obsessive about it. The reality is that if I'm only getting 3-500 calories during the day, that leaves me 700-900 for dinner - that's a pretty big amount of room. I've told myself that if I am positively starving during the afternoon, I will allow myself one more Protein shake, but I'm trying to work with just 3 shakes and lots and lots of water or tea during the day. Other than including a Protein Drink for breakfast so that I *do* have breakfast, I am not focused on dieting on the weekends, just trying to be mindful of what I am eating and keep carbs and calories in check. What I'm expecting from this is three things. One, of course, is that I will spend the next few weeks trying out a lot of protein drinks and maybe some preparation methods. Two, I will get these reviews onto my blog (http://livebytes.net/blog/spacedust/ for anyone who's interested) to try and give others some ideas of nutritional values and what I thought of the stuff as I give it a try. Third, I suspect that it won't hurt in the usual battle to lose a few pounds, and certainly won't hurt for me to get used to what it's like from the perspective of if I get uncomfortably hungry or not. Wish me luck!
  15. I've been tracking my calories and protein the good old fashioned way...paper & pen. Calorie intake around 1100-1300 (based on dr recommendations following metabolism testing) and exercise (elliptical for an hour 5 times a week). Water intake 100oz/day. Protein intake 60-80g/day. So I see on the boards that a lot of people use & recommend myfitnesspal.com for tracking. Thought I would give it a shot....surgery was 5/4/11 and I've been stuck at 10 pounds pre-surgery loss and 10 pounds post-surgery loss (in first month and none since) and I've had one fill (that provided no restriction/hunger control). My question is....after you've entered all of your data (age, weight, goal, exercise, lifestyle) and it gives you a recommended calorie goal for the day.....who follows that and if you do, have you had success? Based on my input (lightly active) and current exercise, it recommends I eat 1950 calories a day. WHAT????? I know that what I've been doing is not dropping any pounds so I'm wondering if I should slightly eat more and meet the dr recommendation and the myfitnesspal.com recommendation in the middle and see how that goes? Needing feedback...thanks!!!!
  16. I was banded the 16th of March. No fill for two full months allowed by my doctor. I'm starving! I'm as hungry as I was prior to being banded. I have not lost one pound, not one! I called the doctor's office for help and was told no one said it would be easy. I'm frustrated and extremely depressed. Has anyone taken diet pills to help with the hunger to stay on the diet? Protein is not cutting the mustard. I admit I've gone off the wagon and ate a regular meal. I'm back on liquids though. Will the regular meal ruin the banding, 8 days after band? I can't imagine two months with no fills and expected to eat as if I were.

    5 days post op

DSUA, I am 7 days post op. Are you dehydrated? Are you still on Clear liquids? I think this is normal, all though I must say I feel well, though a bit fatigued if I do not get my calories. Are you in any support groups? If not, I highly suggest you go on Facebook (you can always establish an anonymous name under another email) and join the group Gastric Sleeve Support Group. It is very active and several of us are newbies. Once you get on that group (which is open and can appear in your personal newsfeed - thus no confidentiality unless a fake name) then there are several other resources on FB linked through that support group. I find support is the biggest thing for success and doing it on line will allow it to happen 24/7. My advice - sip, sip, sip. Walk, walk, walk. Get some Protein in. If you are still on clear stuff than you can buy some protein Water which does help and of course some carbs at this early stage. Kristy Valentine

    Wow, getting excited

@@Nurse_Lenora Congratulations! I have to give you a lot of credit, I could not do the liquid diet for that long. I did well on it but geez, 10 days later I swear my brain was not functioning at 100%. Granted I got so sick of the cloyingly sweet Protein shakes and everything else I was allowed was clear sf liquids.
  19. I didnt lose my hair, and I dont know anyone around me personally who did either, I've only ever read about it on here. This wont be popular at all, lol, but I actually suspect its often the high Protein diet that causes it, that lots of protein does NOT prevent hair loss. Its only ever people on severe diets that you hear about losing their hair (outside of a WLS forum). I think an "almost no carb" approach is too extreme and not complete nourishment. I also think that the calorie intakes many people have after surgery are way way too low for nourishment. If you eat 600 calories a day you're going to suffer side effects. Protein is not the only thing you need! All this focus on it, people forget that you can lose hair if you dont get enough zinc or Iron too, and that there's other bad effects to your health with lack of B Vitamins or C etc etc. You need a balance. Cramming as much protein into you as you can without thinking about everything else might help you get thin but it wont make you super healthy. Slower more moderate weight loss on a more varied diet seems to not result in hair loss. I was quite happy to take over 2 years to lose my 100lb and not have any side effecs like hair loss. I've never heard of anyone who didnt recover though. Everyone's hair seems to grow back, and nobody goes completely bald. Its just thinning, a pretty good sign you're not getting all you need in your diet.

    question from a newbie!?!?

When you really stop to think about how small the pouch is that you will be filling, you realize you need to pack a lot of nutrition in a small space. So while we don't have to diet per se, we do need to attempt to eat a healthy variety of nutrition in little amounts of food. So since as has been said, we have lots of fats to spare----eliminating the biggest majority of them is easiest!!! Plus the carbs are generally softer foods. So they do not stay with us for as long, so we get hungry sooner. Eating lean protein, allows us to feel full for hours on end with just a small amount. Some people have seriously dieted---either low carb, or simple calorie counting---and exercised faithfully--and they have dropped their weight FAST!!!! Personally I go for all things in moderation, and my weight is going slower---but it is still going! It is recommended to eat protein first, fiber second, and starches and sweets last. Is it required to eat that way? It wasn't by my Dr. Welcome to LBT---nice to have you here! Kat

    question from a newbie!?!?

The idea is this: you have plenty of fat stored on your body to supply your energy needs. However, you don't want to lose a lot of muscle mass, and if you don't eat protein, your body will start using your muscles for protein. So we eat protein. If you don't eat produce, you're going to be constipated. Plus it supplies bulk for very few calories, and lots of vitamins. Your body doesn't need carbs -- it has your fat to burn for energy. You're getting some carbs from the fruit & veggies anyway. I add in a good multi-vitamin as well as a calcium supplement.
  22. Bad habits die hard. Don't worry about it. We are all experiencing moments where we believe we can go back to our previous lives and eat what we used to... But this is not true anymore. The only thing you will achieve is to hurt yourself as your sleeve won't react well to fat and heavy food. This is a learning curve. I experienced it recently. You need to listen to the signals your body sends to not repeat the same mistakes. You will be fine. Go back to the basics: fluids, Proteins, exercise. Take care.
  23. Linda I found the protein shots at the Vitamin Shop. I would suggest that you buy the individual tubes first to see which flavor you can tolerate. I made the mistake of buying a case for about $27 bucks with the discount, but it was all one flavor (grape) ughh! You can also order it online at the vitamin shoppe or Bariatricedge.com, if you don't have a Vitamin Shoppe near you, but you won't have the option of trying them first.
