They do exist (just do a search on Protein tablets). However, they only offer a very small amount of protein in each tablet (usually 1-2 grams) and are really not much use.

Healthy living after Band surgery
pink dahlia replied to statebabe40's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
All of the above advice is excellent, the only thing I would add is to keep a few healthy snacks with you at all times. This kept me from eating something I shouldnt be eating even if it was only a few bites. I was not a perfect eater, and still aren't , but having healthy snacks when out Im out is always a good option. Depending on what stage you're at, yogurt, a protein drink, cottage cheese, nuts, raw veggies, fruit slices are some favorites. Good luck !! -
That does seem pretty low compared to what I have seen others averaging. Calories will increase some when you add more variety with solid foods. What are your Protein amounts daily with nothing but lunch meat? I am about 3 1/2 weeks out, still on soft foods, and average about 500-600 calories a day, 70-90 g Protein. I still have 2 Protein drinks daily, and meals are usually cottage cheese, tuna or chicken salad made with light mayo, refried Beans with cheese, etc...

I know some that did eat baby foods but personally YUCK! and a lot of my band friends threw stuff in the blender like roasts and said they tasted great again I just couldn't get past it. Once I switched over to the creamy/mushy phase at the 14th day I was all over the various cheese Soups if they had veggies in them I either gummed them to oblivion or fished them out. I couldn't be bothered to do the whole blender thing like I should have. I also made a variety of Protein puddings by mixing whey protein powders with instant sugar free puddings. (Chocolate, Cheesecake, Lemon or Lime, etc..) Later I discovered an even healthier option where I would blend Cottage Cheese until smooth and replace most of the milk called for in the pudding recipe with that instead. It had a much higher protein to carb ratio and tasted great. Most people think it sounds disgusting but really it tastes very creamy like you made it with whole milk (no hint of salty at all) Oh and if you freeze the puddings for a while before you eat them and stir them up they taste like eating soft serve ice cream. Yummy. Right now one of my favorite protein rich foods is Cottage Cheese with some Yogurt and a Cherry or Rasberry Crystal Light bottle Water packet stirred in. I've just been feeling too lazy to take the time to blend up the puddings and mess up the kitchen. But I'm not sure if cottage cheese would be considered "soft" enough for the 14 day mark. This stage was SO HARD for me but I just kept repeating to myself I can put up with anything for just a couple weeks and being self pay I couldn't risk the possibility of having to pay for any complications much less the loss of money with more time off work without pay. Speaking of work, one of these days I may need to talk to you about the whole teeth whitening thing. I'd love to do it but always assumed too expensive. Tried one of those home kits once and was VERY sore and dissapointed though I managed to get my money back. I personally think I would need veneers to do any good on my teeth. (though I'm not nor ever was a smoker)

I am trying to see Dr. Malley have an appt with him Oct. 20th! He has a new doctor coming in Aug. then I should be able to get in and get a fill. That is where I want to go. Yesterday went to Surgerical Weightloss Centers they gave me some directions. I don't think they have it together. I went and got some chili from Wendys I heard that was an option. You are not being bitchy but helpful! I think I am in my second week if I had surgery July 4th, correct? We are sticking frozen foods in the blender after we cook it. They have a thick consistency is that okay or should I go buy just baby food and stick with that? I haven' had any solid foods in a while so I am really watching it. What about if you made a roast and ground that up, is that okay? Thanks for helping me out!

I'm glad that someone posted this issue, because it is quite pertinent to me. I was banded 2.5 years ago in the UK. Because I lived at the time quite far away from any doctor who did fills/band care I had many many complications, including a near-removal slippage and numerous fills and unfills. Despite this, I still managed to lose close to 50 pounds. After my last unfill in April, I gave my body a good rest up until a month ago, when I got filled again. So far, I have had no problems, even though my doc filled me quite a lot, and I thought I would immediately be too tight and experience those same problems again (mostly severe pbing - not on purpose!) Not so, as I learned a few important lessons in the half year I was totally unfilled: 1. THE GOLDEN RULE: know your body. I ignored so many signals that my particular body was giving me: being very tight in the mornings, which meant that I shouldn't shove some Breakfast down my throat just because I thought I needed to eat breakfast (years of mind training). Now I have a few cups of very hot coffee, wait an hour or two until my band is a little looser and have a small breakfast/lunch. I have the same problem with dinner: I'm very tight in the evenings. In the past I would try to eat Protein and cause agony as I either ate too fast, too big of chunks of meat, etc. etc. I now know that evenings are going to be difficult for me so I cut off eating no later than 6:00 p.m., and if I'm hungry later in the evening I have some Soup or sugar free jello/pudding. Please note, this works for me, other people know their bands work in different ways, but the most important thing is: know thy body, know thy band... 2. RECORDING EVERYTHING I EAT: This is a big pain, but if I don't do this (I use fitday.com) I am very liberal and imaginative with amounts/quantities of what I eat. I'm afraid that I am becoming too anal retentive by doing this, but I'd rather swap my obsession with eating, with an obsession of recording calories, carbs, etc. It is also quite eye-opening to see how much you actually eat, when you are convinced that you are eating itty bitty harmless portions or foods. Since I was pre-diabetic at some point, I really really watch my carbs, and try to stick to around 800 calories a day. Some days are easier, some more difficult but I try to be consistent. 3. ESTABLISH A LOCAL RELATIONSHIP WITH A FILL DOCTOR/SURGEON: I live in Europe and where I once lived in Poland there were no doctors at all who did this procedure, and every time I needed help I had to board a plane to London to get filled/unfilled. Obviously, this was not an ideal situation financially and when you're really ill from too tight of a fill, every moment you're not unfilled is agony. I have now moved to Vienna, Austria and have made contact with an American trained band surgeon who is 15 minutes from my house, and only does fills under x-ray. It is a huge relief to know that if I am too tight, or need some kind of an adjustment he is just a brief trip away. This is an extreme example (I know) but it is something to consider to those bandsters who go to Mexico and need to be treated by someone else in the U.S. Really think about your decision. In my case it was my only option at the time, I'm really glad I did it, but it hasn't been easy. 4. EXERCISE: Ugh, I hate it, really I do. So I'm trying to walk approx. 30 minutes a day as I can see a purpose to walking somewhere than sitting in a gym. I also bought an inflatable exercise ball that I use with various DVDs that I have bought via Amazon. This is the area where I need to see the biggest improvement. But I have noticed when I walk a lot the scale does move down if it's been a bit sluggish... My only regret is that I don't have a local (English-speaking) band community I can use for support. My husband and friends have been terrific, but I have to say that I learned all these very difficult lessons on my own. But the point is: I've learned and I'm losing again (10 pounds in 2.5 weeks). I'm so glad I kept my band. At times I thought it was my enemy... but the real enemy.. was ME! Hope this helps someone!!! (Sorry so long)

Nanook back from her RNY on Thursday....
Nanook replied to Nanook's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Thanks Headhunter, Today I know what it's like to be kicked to death in the ribs by feral donkeys! My group has a combined vits/sups etc... where you only take four chewables a day which is much different than the huge amount my daughter took and could never get down! But I have to take the protein everyday which is no big deal, well now it is of course but in the future shouldn't be. Anyway if these damn headaches would go away life would be much better. Thanks for your support, Nancy. -
I am 2.5 weeks post-op and feeling better compared to the last 2 weeks. I'm starting to feel guilty that I'm not doing more around the house my kitchen is a disaster my husband works long hours and then he comes home and takes care of my daughter and I. Am I not getting in enough protein? Or is my body still recovering from major surgery?

If you were to use the whey Protein isolate powder, you COULD use 1 1/2 scoops in the 6 oz of Water and shake it up, which would give you 30 grams of protein. I was only getting 40 grams pre-op and then for two weeks post-op--it's too tough to get more at that time! I'm a chocoholic, so I buy belgian chocolate or chocolate malt flavors of whey protein isolate (NOT CONCENTRATE) from Amazon.com: Online Shopping for Electronics, Apparel, Computers, books, DVDs & more (and I always make sure to get the free shipping!). They honestly do taste great in just water!! Hang in, big guy, this time will fly by and soon you won't even remember it much!

Hi, friends! Okay...so I took all the warnings from the nutritionist about getting in the Protein. I get between 75 and 90 grams of protein a day. I take my multi-vitamin every day too. But in the past couple of weeks, my hair is just falling out all over the place... I go to condition my hair and come back with strands and strands tangled around my fingers. I have an appointment with my family doctor next week to maybe do some blood work and talk about the situation, but I thought I would ask you guys too. Has anybody else gone through this... getting the protein but losing the hair anyway? I've combed the net, but find no other tips for bandsters to prevent hair loss other than the protein intake. Thanks for your thoughts!

i would ONLY drink muscle milk if you are having an absolute kick ass workout schedule. yes, it does have quite a few cals / fats. i did the isopure right after surgery and got very tired of the 'kool aid' taste.... below is the nutritional info for 2 scoops. this is without the milk i mix it in (skim) Cals 348 cals / fat 162 total fat 18g sat fat 8g carb 12g diet Fiber <2g sugar 6g Protein 32g like i said i only drink it when i know i will work out for at least 1/2 hour and burn at least 500 cals. it is still way too early to see if my "test" is working. i am going to give it a total of a month to see what happens not only to my weight but to inches because this does aid in the muscle building and we all know muscle weighs more than fat. so far i've lost 4 3/4 pound in the first week. not too bad.

I have completed all of my pre-approval testing as of last week (Mamo, pap, ultrasound on liver and gallbladder, echocardiogram, nutritional class 1, psych eval, visit with cardiologist) and got flying colors on all of them. I also have a statement from my orthopedic guy that I need to lose 100 pounds before I can have my knee replacement (we are all hoping losing the weight will mean I won't have to have the knee replacement for a much longer period of time). Now waiting for the insurance company to do their thing (Tricare Prime) and approve the RnY surgery (apparently the only bariatric surgery they cover). I was hoping for the surgery in mid to late October, but we may not have the insurance okay until then, then we have to schedule the surgery, so I'm hoping early November. I have a large and important event scheduled at work the week of Thanksgiving and must be back to work before then. Surgeon has me starting a pre-op diet now to get used to what the post-op diet will be like (primarily Protein with veggies). We live too far from a gym (and it's too expensive anyway), so hubby and I are going for a home fitness gym and I have nine acres property I can walk everyday (as well as miles of country road). I've been caffeine free for three weeks, sugar and alcohol free for two weeks, bubbly diet soda free for three weeks... working on learning to chew.... having time to practice the new habits and give up the bad ones is good, but not sure how long I can really hold out with out the help of the surgery. I'm worried the insurance people are going to drag their feet or worse yet, deny me. I started out 120 pounds over my ideal weight of 128. I've lost a couple of pounds in the last week thanks to the Post-op diet (but feel like I'm starving and craving sugar something fierce). Surgeon tells me I have no worries about being approved even though I am healthy despite my weight. My weight alone should be enough she says. Any experience with Tricare Prime?

New here and thinking about surgery
Jonathan Blue replied to Catie Januska's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Check out this video of my journey. Also the other links below will show you to other areas where I talk about my journey and you can get in touch with me personally with any questions. I am more than happy to talk with you if you need any advice or help. It is truly the most amazing thing I have ever done. I am one year out and down almost 210lbs. I am doing things I never dreamed possible. The only thing I will urge you to do is to do your research. You need to know exactly what you are getting yourself into. I researched all aspects of the different kinds of surgical options, the preparation, recovery, hospital experience, and diet. I knew exactly what I was in for both good and bad. In this process, knowledge is power. I promise though, if you do this, it will be the single most amazing thing and gift you can give to yourself. The process will be the most incredible journey and you will meet some of the most inspiring people you will ever get to know. There has not been a day that has gone by, good or bad, since my surgery that I have not regretted not doing it sooner. You are still young and can enjoy your new life and your new body. If I can help in any way or you have additional questions, please let me know. I am an open book. You can contact me at the links below and be sure to check out the video of my journey so far. http://youtu.be/7lhcbypslHQ @Fat2FitBlue Blog: http://wakingupfromh...s.blogspot.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook...ealjonathanblue -
I promise your energy will start to come back. It does however take time. The most important thing is to make sure you stay hydrated. And then get your Protein in. If you can keep on on those things, your energy will come back. It just takes some time. I am 7 weeks out and it gets better every day. I still get a bit tired later in the day and I am only getting about 400 calories a day but they are good protein calories. Also, if your clinic has not started you back on Vitamins that will make a huge difference. Hang in there! You are on a terrific journey but it requires patience..... Good Luck!

Hello everyone! I too am still drinking Protein shakes. I am also very tight most of early morning and afternoon so using the shakes gives me peace of mind that I am getting the protein I need. I am not too hungry so the shakes help with the nutrients even when I don't feel like eating, or am too tight. I am drinking 1 can of GNCs 50 Gram Slam shake a day - splitting it into two servings. I like the Cookies & Creme and banana Cream. They have a discount the 1st - 7th of every month so I buy a couple of cases then. Given the amount of money I used to spend on fast food, these shakes are cheap lol.
-
I still drink protein drinks. I found out sometimes when I can't get anything to go down I can always get that protein shake to go down.
-
Buy from premier protein. The shakes aren't too bad. They're ready made, and don't need to be refrigerated until you open them. They have chocolate and vanilla that are kosher and other flavors that aren't kosher. The chocolate is pretty good, but the other flavors I never tasted (because I don't like vanilla shakes, and I'm not allowed to try the rest)

At least 64 oz of liquids including protein and popsicles.

I was told protein shakes do not count towards water totals...Vitamin water or G2 does though.

How to tell if you're in starvation mode?
B.Annie replied to mbuczkowski's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
If "starvation mode" was real, starving kids in 3rd world countries, French models, or anorexics wouldn't weigh so little. Ask one of them if we 1st world tubbies are in starvation mode. Lol [emoji13] I personally think it's just another thing we try to convince ourselves of. If you have weight to lose, you will lose it. Google "is starvation mode real". There are some good articles. What IS real is your body needing either more calories to kick metabolism in gear again or your body trying to readjust to the weight lost by pausing a bit before it realizes you're not done and it has to let go more. I was on a 2 week stall (I'm pre surgery). I spent a weekend on vacation where I ate between 1700-2000 calories a day for 3 days. My normal caloric intake is from 1000-1200. I also didn't work out for 6 days when normally I was at the gym 4 days a week. The past 2 days after vacation, I put myself on a diet similar to my intended preop diet. Premier drink for breakfast and lunch and a sensible meal (protein and veg) for dinner. I've lost 6 pounds in the last 2 days. I just had to reset and retrick my body.
