  1. Canned tuna is one of the ideal foods for WLS patients. It has 70 calories and 14 grams of Protein per serving, not to mention that it’s carb-free and full of omega-3 fatty acids. Plus, in a world where it can be tough to put together a nutritious meal because it takes too long, canned tuna is a perfect solution that can sit in your pantry for whenever you need it. But there is a potential drawback: it can get awfully boring if you have it plain day in, day out. Traditional mayo-laden tuna salad and fat and carb laden tuna noodle casserole are non-starters for WLS patients…so how do you prepare your tuna to be delicious and healthy? Share your recipes here, please! We could all use some tuna tips. If you’re not into tuna or your best protein recipe uses something else, please share that recipe, too! Whether it’s chicken breast, Beans, smoked mussels, Greek yogurt, or another healthy protein, we definitely want to hear how you make it even more delicious while keeping it healthy.
  2. Don't stick to the 1/4 c every 3 hours. That's way too little food. You're almost two weeks out, you should be able to eat almost normally at this point. I'm two weeks out and I can eat 1-1.5 c of food per sitting (depending on the food) and my Dr. approves of this. It's normal nutrition. Ultimately you'll be looking for that amount per meal, 1-1.5 c. Eat when you are hungry, not by the clock. If you are truly hungry - eat. It will prevent you from feeling sick and prevent your sugar from tanking. Eat complex carbs and Protein to keep you fuller longer. Avoid Soups, yogurt, ice cream, Jello, anything that is liquid or liquid like because they'll slip right through. I find that soft cooked Pasta keeps me full for 4-5 hours, potatoes do the same thing (all approved Phase II foods). Soup makes me hungry an hour later. Protein shakes stave me off for about 2 hours. Start tracking your food - the time you eat it too - The Daily Plate is really good for this (there's even an iPhone app) - and that will help you figure out what keeps you fuller for longer so you can eat foods that will help you lose by keeping you full.
  3. Well last week I lost 5lbs I am on my 2 week pre op diet, with one week left. I can only have protein shakes and sugar free liquids. But I added carbmaster yogurt from Krogers it only has 4grams of carbs and 12 grams of protien =80cals. I also eat this AMAZING new cheese it's a 100 cal pack from Kraft called 3 cheese blend. It's my one treat everyday And only 1gram of carbs. I have been doing 800-1000cals per day and although it sucks it is somewhat tolerable as long as I keep myself busy. I also eat these prepackaged SF jello jigglers from krogers called gel bites and that has helped a ton to keep me satisfied. I don't think I could tolerate 500 cals a day yikes!! You should def. go low carb and you will for sure loose the wt by June 9th. And shrink your liver

    Random restriction...temperamental band!

Yes. I feel more restricted in the am. First food of the day takes me a bit. Sometimes I need to get up and walk around . Then some days. Like someone posted Yogurt is barely doable. Is it hydration ? I usually drink the same amount of water. Once I'm irritated it takes awhile to settle. Then back to life light!

    Need friend in Kansas City

I know some that did eat baby foods but personally YUCK! and a lot of my band friends threw stuff in the blender like roasts and said they tasted great again I just couldn't get past it. Once I switched over to the creamy/mushy phase at the 14th day I was all over the various cheese Soups if they had veggies in them I either gummed them to oblivion or fished them out. I couldn't be bothered to do the whole blender thing like I should have. I also made a variety of Protein puddings by mixing whey protein powders with instant sugar free puddings. (Chocolate, Cheesecake, Lemon or Lime, etc..) Later I discovered an even healthier option where I would blend Cottage Cheese until smooth and replace most of the milk called for in the pudding recipe with that instead. It had a much higher protein to carb ratio and tasted great. Most people think it sounds disgusting but really it tastes very creamy like you made it with whole milk (no hint of salty at all) Oh and if you freeze the puddings for a while before you eat them and stir them up they taste like eating soft serve ice cream. Yummy. Right now one of my favorite protein rich foods is Cottage Cheese with some Yogurt and a Cherry or Rasberry Crystal Light bottle Water packet stirred in. I've just been feeling too lazy to take the time to blend up the puddings and mess up the kitchen. But I'm not sure if cottage cheese would be considered "soft" enough for the 14 day mark. This stage was SO HARD for me but I just kept repeating to myself I can put up with anything for just a couple weeks and being self pay I couldn't risk the possibility of having to pay for any complications much less the loss of money with more time off work without pay. Speaking of work, one of these days I may need to talk to you about the whole teeth whitening thing. I'd love to do it but always assumed too expensive. Tried one of those home kits once and was VERY sore and dissapointed though I managed to get my money back. I personally think I would need veneers to do any good on my teeth. (though I'm not nor ever was a smoker)

    Hotel Breakfast

I pack instant oatmeal, fruit, and get individual greek yogurt cups. I carry a small cooler and fill it with a bag of ice if the room doesn't have a fridge. Earlier out, I brought my shaker cup, vanilla Protein powder and Starbucks instant Via Decaf. Makes a great room temp drink with lots of protein. I still like buffets because I can have a little bite of so many things. And usually includes the drink. So I drink a cup of coffee first, then eat a little of several protein and fruits and finish with a little grain. But I wouldn't pick a buffet on my own, that's just if I'm eating with others. Lynda

    Eating On The Move

Deli meats are a good idea and you can keep them in the refrigerator. Cottage cheese with salsa? Tuna in the air tight bags in water and buy a small deal of light mayo. Pork rinds are good crunchy foods to eat with anything and they have no carbs. Greek yogurts. Hope these help somewhat.
  9. I have a 3 & 4 year old with picky palates so it's fruits, yogurts, spaghetti, nuggets, etc. For my husband, I made up some favorites then froze in portions. I also plan to make things such as a pot of spaghetti and meatballs that he can eat from for a few days. If he wants something else, he can either cook his own dinner or get take out. I think he is planning to eat bigger lunches at work and have a lighter dinner. My 8 month old will be on a similar diet as me LOL. Takes him about 20 minutes to eat 3 oz of blended food so he'll be my company at mealtime

    The Magic Bullet is Awesome

Hahaha sex toy. I've been thinking about getting the Magic bullet (blender). Do you like it much better than a normal blender? Also, I can understand how you feel about the liquid diet. Luckily my 2 week pre op diet is only two meals of Protein drinks or bars. Then I get to eat one meal a day. (low fat, low carb meal). but I'm not to worried about it. I think the one thing that has helped me is being on Weight watchers since March. I've totally changed the way I eat. Making better food choices and finding other things low cal./low fat that satisfy my hunger. If I'm really wanting something to eat or something sweet, I turn to greek yogurt with honey. My fav. I don't feel so deprived from eating what use to be 'normal" food for me, like pizza, hamburgers, chinese and so on. Sure i might have that once or twice a month, but I may go 2 weeks not eating any fast food or junk. But when I do eat it, its only one meal and much smaller than I use to eat. I think learning how to eat again is the hardest part. It's a mind game. One game I don't want to lose. Good luck with your pre op diet. Hope it gets easier for you.
  12. Also I do get in all my Protein. Mostly Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, super milk ( that's what I call skim milk with dry milk in it!!), and lean hamburger and quality protein. I eat about 1000 calories a day. I have lost 22 lbs in three weeks and I'm healthy. In the long run a 1000 calories a day is a fraction of what we used to eat. I figure the more fuel for my body the better it can work to burn the fuel ( fat). Don't stress about this all that will make your body only hold on to fat. Relax go with the process dont stress. If you can only do twenty minutes then do it and eat more and work up to it. We worked SOOOO hard to get here so enjoy it. Enjoy the sensations and feelings of a changing new you. And I always take my Vitamins because if we don't eventually we will get very I'll . I've seen it before in friends. Just follow your DRs directions and feel your way through. You will be great!!
  13. Watered down or blended (Low/No Sugar) Yogurt & Kefir
  14. i am almost 10 months out. i cannot eat most chicken, ice cream, most breads. those things will typically send me running to the bathroom. i eat a lot of greek yogurt and that includes the frozen variety. it tastes good and has a lot of protein. early on i didn't have a desire for sweets. however, i do want sweets at times now, but i have a lot more control than pre-op. sometimes sugar will make my stomach hurt. good luck!

    Tied To Food

I can see why you need to "drink" alot most of the day so you stay hydrated and then when you get to mushies or soft foods, you should eat every three hours or so (no more than 4 oz.) and continually drink the rest of the time. You should be concentrating on protein shakes and mushies if he has cleared you for that. When you get to soft/solid foods, there are alot of options that are easy to take with you like cheese sticks, cottage cheese, StarKist sandwich ready albacore tuna iun a pouch that does not have to be refrigerated, hard boiled eggs, etc. But it's hard for me to understand why you would be eating real food at three weeks. I have never heard of that. Your sleeve needs time to heal before it starts taking in solid regular food. If you are on pureed foods, you can still have all the sf jello or sf pudding or yogurt you want and those are considered full liquids.

    Scared to eat....

i know how you feel. the first 6 weeks about healing, not about losing weight. i too was back to eating what i did before i had the first fill. after my fill, i did notice a difference in eating. just watch what you eat, write it down and chew, chew, chew your food. greek yogurt has alot of protein in it. i drink a protein shake in the mornings as i am rarely hungry until 10am.
  17. I can eat pretty much anything without fear of "dumping" except sometimes a lot of sugar will get me. Apple juice and syrup are HUGE no-no's. I have to dilute the apple juice with Water about 50/50 before it's okay and syrup just kills me. Major shakes. It's weird because cupcakes and cake and Cookies and brownies all seem okay. I think it's because I don't eat much of any of those things (usually the amount of 1 cookie or the equivalent), but I can pile on the syrup and chug down the apple juice. I had apple juice and half of a pop tart once within an hour of one another and the next thing I know I couldn't even sit up. lol The only other thing that bothers me is Peanut Butter. It sticks and kind of hurts unless it's spread pretty thin on toast or a cracker. It doesn't make me dump, though. It's for the best because peanut butter is my favorite food on the planet and I have no self-control with it. I can still eat bread and Pasta and all of that. I sort of wish I couldn't because those have always been a huge weakness of mine. I use Splenda to sweeten my cream of wheat and greek yogurt (or sometimes I sweeten it with jam or honey), and I tolerate that just fine.
  18. I was on full liquids the first 10 days cream of wheat, yogurt, creamed soups, smoothies, oatmeal, ect. Then soft foods scrambled eggs, beans, cheese, grits. Drs. guidelines vary so much that first month. Good luck to you

    Protein for Clear and Full

Clear Protein is something like Isopure. It looks like kool aide. You can put unflavored protein powder in crystal light, sf gatoraide, sf poweraide etc. There is also unjury protein chicken broth. Syntrex Nectar also makes some clear protein. Clear protein is not necessarily clear, it can be cloudy but not thick, and no, chocolate is not a clear protein. Full liquid is drinkable yogurt, protein shakes that are thicker, and soups with no chunks in them.

This band has a mind of it's own!

I usually start off in the morning with the low-fat yogurt eaten ver slowly -- seems to do well. Then mid-morning have a little oatmeal. Often I will just have cottage cheese and some fruit for lunch, a protein bar mid afternoon and then fish or very tender chicken and veges for dinner -- I really like the Jack in the Box teriyaki chicken bowl -- but don't eat the rice. Very small portions chewed very carefully -- I find I have to stick to softer foods as well. I can eat the fish part of the sushi but too much rice will get stuck. It's a learning experience for sure.

    Protein pills.

Lots of soft foods have protein. Greek yogurt, oatmeal, refried beans, cottage cheese, soft poached fish, split pea soup Also, you might be able to tolerate protein bars soon if you stick with smooth texture ones that don't have seeds and nuts.

How much protein do I need???

I agree 110% with JJSMILES. We all get very frustrated with the conflicting advice everyone gets from the nutritionists and docs. In the end, it's what will work for you long term. I'm approaching my 1 year band anniversary, and have lost 70+ lbs in that time. I did this by eating as normally as my band will allow. Here's my typical menu: B: coffee w/ cream (can't do it without cream); All Bran Honey & Nut Cereal (11 g fiber); some fresh fruit and a bit of milk. S: cheese string or yogurt (don't always have a snack) L: leftovers from the night before or a Lean Cuisine meal S: All Bran Bites, yogurt or cheese string D: a meat, vegetable and a bit of starch S: a treat... usually a cookie or ice cream or chips. When I log my day on thedailyplate.com, it usually comes out at about 1000 to 1200 cals, based on my quantities. Sometimes I get high in Protein, sometimes not... but its usually pretty balanced. If I followed the "all protein only" plan, it wouldn't last long for me because I love my veggies and fruit... its what keeps me happy. Exercise is also key, which is why I haven't lost more in my first year. I haven't been exercising all that much. But that changed this last week, and now I've committed to an exercise plan. Good luck to all of the new bandsters... I love my band, and know it literally saved my life.

How much protein do I need???

I eat a lot of cottage cheese. I can eat about 4-6 ounces per meal. The nutritionist recommends 2-4 ounces 3 times a day. So, basically I am on 90 percent Protein and 10 percent complex carbs. My calorie count is probably somewhere between 600-800 right now. I use protein supplements and Multivitamins, B complex, Calcium and D Vitamin. I eat a lot of string cheese for Snacks. I eat eggs, yogurt, deli turkey slices, cheese, chicken, and I have added a whole grain Cereal to try to get more fiber. I eat Beans - refried and kidney, sausage, bacon, chili, Soups, broccoli, Protein Bars, fish and hamburgers without the bread. I use to keep a journal daily - now I just jot down notes. You are certainly eating better than I am and I need to eat more to prevent my body from shutting down the weight loss. My problem is that I am short and I cannot eat as many calories as others can. Normally, I probably can't have more than 1200 calories per day. If so, I will gain weight. It is a little depressing but that is just the way it is. If I go exercise crazy I can eat more and I have done that but it is a lot of work and maintenance - we are talking Richard Simmons. Lots of luck to you.
  24. This happens to me quite often. Some days I can eat absolutely ANYTHING I want no matter how bad or good it is, how dense or lean it is, etc. Other days however, I have, "bad," band days where I cannot eat ANYTHING without getting it stuck. I will try to drink coffee first thing out of bed to try and loosen my band, but nothing, smoothies, yogurt, cottage cheese, tuna - nothing even liquids are difficult. I'm writing to see if this happens to anyone else or just me? Right now I'm actually getting a bit concerned because I have not been able to eat anything since Saturday. I don't feel the pain I normally do when I'm stuck, just the pressure. Does anyone have any experience with this?

    Solids After Surgery

To add to all the other great posts above, the post op diet is for proper recovery. You can cause your band to slip or not be positioned correctly by eating solids too soon. It takes weeks for the recovery process and when you are eating solid and heavy foods you are putting extra pressure on your stoma (the band, sutures, etc) and can cause harm. It is sooooo important to listen to your surgeon's instructions. Also, mushy foods can be greek yogurt (high protein), scrambled eggs, cottage cheese, ricotta cheese, and blenderized meals. I made my normal meals for my family and put my 3-4 ounces of meat in the blender with chicken broth or a sauce of some sort and while it may not have looked good, it tasted fine. Those are just some ideas for Protein. Note that it is very important to eat protein first as it will keep you satiated. Sorry if the replies seem harsh but by not following your post-op instructions you could be jeopardizing your health, recovery and success with the band. You will get through this - we all did! Best of luck to you.
