Hi fellow Massachusetts sleevers. I'm in Salem MA, having my sleeve at North Shore Medical Center in Salem, MA on December 9. I'm revising from the band which was taken out in April. Can't wait for my sleeve, I'm just finishing up week one of the liquid diet. Glad to meet you all.

Can we please talk about BPD (Biliopancreatic Diversion) and DS (duodenal switch)?
Nanook replied to anam's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I thought about DS when my lap band wasn't working and was considering revision. I had heard that with DS there would be no question that I would lose weight. I don't know that much about DS or BPD-DS but I know many people have definite opinions on the matter and probably a better crowd to discuss might be found at www.obesityhelp.com My surgeon wouldn't reccomend a person for DS unless they were in the 400-500 lb range. There was a surgeon north of me who I was going to see and discuss it with but he was 2 hours away and I didn't want to be that far from a surgeon in case I had complications which can happen with any weight loss surgery. Anyway wondered why you were considering the DS route as opposed to RNY? Good luck with which ever surgery you choose, Nancy. -
Bands to Sleeves less successful
klelly1 replied to Mid West's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
This is what happened with me and the band..... i decided to have the band because i was obese. i was obese because i ate way too much food. not because i was a sugar or carb addict. I did not have a sugar and carb addiction before the band. I repeat... too much food too often. After i had the band I had nothing but problems. I could not eat meats, poultry, eggs, vegetables or fruit without it coming right back up. so what does one do eventually, eat what stays down. which is slider foods, sugar, carbs, etc. I am having a revision to the sleeve soon, which my doctor says he has seen way better results for the people that had the band and had problems, and switched to the sleeve. Meanwhile he unfilled my band so I can eat , how how i had missed these healthy foods! So my plan is that when i get the sleeve , I will still eat healthy as I have been since the unfill and i will be restricted to the amounts i can eat and be successful. It sounds like some people dont understand how and why some of us with the failed lapband/self experience ended up on the failing end. Good Luck to all and good luck to me! :-) -
Revision Recovery Timeline - Band to Bypass
TX_KB replied to spealex's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had band to bypass revision on 12/22. I was fine by the next day and went home from the hospital. Had no problems with liquids. Was walking around. Only needed pain meds at night before bed and the occasional Tylenol. Was off pain meds by the first week post-op. I had a little soreness but nothing too bad. No nausea. Gas pain was gone by about day 3. I took off 3 weeks from work bc I do 12 hour shifts that require physical activity. I could have gone back at 2 weeks. The first week, the main problem was fatigue and weakness. I took a nap every day. Once I could start eating more real food, I had more energy. I have young children and was able to take care of them the first week. Recovery from this has been better than the band for me. -

I'm scheduled for 10/13. Just had all my pre op testing done on 9/21. I'm a revision from lap band to RNY. Also need scar tissue repair, hernia repair and my gall bladder removed. Have not received insurance approval yet. I'm getting nervous, but the doctors office told me that revision surgery approval takes longer.

My revision approval took about 15 days if I remember correctly it was fairly quick but longer than I would have liked

Laura-ven took the words right out of my mouth. When I started researching WLS I was locked in on the lap band but the more research I did the more I started questioning my choice. I talked with my doc and watched some videos that he had prepared about the lap band, sleeve, and bypass. He does all three surgeries but I decided that the sleeve was the best for me. The lap band is also really high maintenance and with the hours I work I don't have time to make a follow up appointment every six weeks for adjustments/fills. Also my insurance covers one WLS per lifetime, after the research I did and finding all the people that had revisions from band to sleeve, I decided to go with the one lots of people end up with and just bypass the band all together. Good luck with your decision. I am only three weeks out, I'm in a stall right now and have been for two week so I'm a little bummed BUT I still feel like this is one of the best decisions I've ever made for myself. I have not had any problems and would do it again tomorrow if I needed to.

Can I be sleeved if band caused damage?
denisestevedr replied to Thistlegirl's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I just had my band removed last week with Dr. Alvarez in Mexico. He said that I will be able to come back in 6 months for the VSG revision but said that some have so much damage from the band that a sleeve is impossible without leaking or other complications. So, it is possible to have so much damage of the stomach from the band to not be able to ever have the sleeve without complications. Good to find a doctor that knows what he is doing and only does the VSG when he feels comfortable there will be minimal issues. There is always a risk but good to have a very experienced surgeon to tell you the truth. -
Revision Surgery for Dilated Esophagus!
WASaBubbleButt replied to hefftynetty's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
There is a revision specialist by the name of Dr. Husted. He was writing on another board that the latest studies show that if you surgically reposition or replace a band, you have a 70% chance of another slip in the first five years. He was also referring to a conference he went to in FL and this was discussed a great deal and most at this conference will not be surgically repositioning or replacing bands anymore, they have had very low success with this. Is there any chance that a malabsorptive procedure might serve you a little better? You've been struggling for a long time, three years and not at goal yet... maybe you just need a bit more help? -
I am scheduled for 1030. I am a Lapband revision. I had my Lapband for 4 years and lost 191lbs. Granted, I was sick for most of that time, but I was down to 144. I loved life. And then, BOOM! I had horrible pains. Doubled over for 2 months. Removed my lapband, didn't find a problem and 10 months later I am up 120lbs. I am miserable, I am beside myself and I am hating myself. Gastric bypass is 10/30 and seems a world away.

Cruise 6 weeks after surgery
marfar7 replied to rocknrollmama1980's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I've been on 4 cruises in the last 4 years (all with my lapband in place) and only gained weight on my last cruise (this past May to Alaska) because my band was unfilled awaiting revision surgery for a slip. Make sure you get an RX for Scopolamine Patches for behind ur ear. The first cruise I was so seasick (had no clue I even got seasick) I actually lost a couple lbs! Works like a charm! There r many healthy option in both the dining room and buffet. Don't forget about the chocolate buffet (Carnival does it everytime)! Over 120 varieties of chocolate. Just a few bites will do ya! Have fun! Where r u going? We're hoping to do the Carnival 16 day to Panama Canal in Jan 2015. Lots of time to save $... -

25 yo Paraplegic being banded June 3rd
The Icy One replied to Wheelchair's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi and welcome! People experience slips for different reasons sometimes, it isn't known why a band slips, a patient can be compliant and it just happens. Other times it can be because someone is living with a too tight band, experiencing a lot of Productive Burping and regurgitating and the force of all of that can, in time cause a slip. Others, if a person, for whatever reason throws up a lot... That can cause a band to slip. A slip doesn't always result in loss of the band. A revision surgery can, in some cases set the band back in it's proper place and after a period of recovery and healing, the patient can get back on with their bandster life. In other cases, the band can't be set back in place and has to be removed or the patient chooses to have it removed and either revises to a different WLS or none, at all. Slipping is a possibility, but it isn't a given. It is a risk that you need to consider as you do your research and make your decision. Yes! It is absolutely okay to exercise with the band! You can do anything with the band that you can do without it. -
Dallas doctors indicted by Feds in massive Dallas hospital conspiracy.
Aggiemae replied to Buffy1's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
This is one of my concerns with the "self pay" route. I completely understand that some insurance plans don't cover WLS and there needs to be a self pay option. On the other hand I have seen people: who are 50-60 pounds over weight getting WLS. getting questionable "revisions". choosing self pay because their insurance denied them or required them to "jump through hoops" Seems like some minimal requirements, like maybe a referral from your primary care provider, Should be required for getting major surgery instead of a credit card with a high spending limit. There is a thread here started a few days ago by a woman who went to a surgeon for a pre op interview who was told she could have surgery the NEXT DAY if she had the funds. Another case of greed trumping ethics. -
HELP! serious complications 3 months post op
TashaB88 posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I have been having nausea and, vomiting since 2 weeks post op. I had a stricture that kept coming back and had to be dilated 3 times and I'm only 3months post op. I have been in and out of the hospital several, times as well. I was in the hospital 2 weeks ago for over 2 weeks. I was unable to take anything by mouth. They put a picc line in and started me on TPN (IV nutrients). Thy had to pull my picc line a week later cause it went bad. I was eating a clear/full liquid diet. Now I'm vomiting again and this time I'm having sever abdominal pain as well. I'm unable to keep much down and it all hurts even water. My surgeon has me on several medications but they aren't helping. He suggested I might have to have a revision done. Has anyone had a b anything like this? Or had a revision? Any advise would be greatly appreciated. I'm extremely weak physically and emotionally drained from all this. -
Failed RNY and RNY Revision & Constant Hunger
Melosgirl posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I need help. I am 5’ tall and 63 years old. I had RNY in 2017 at 233 lbs. Goal was 145 lbs which took over a year but I made it. After a 25 lb regain, I had a revision in 2022 because the opening was twice the size it should be. My current weight is 160 lbs. I want to drop 15 lbs to reach my original 145 lb goal weight. I am always hungry. Nutritionist said I would be a good candidate for Wegovy. I am worried sick about weight regain. -

Revision surgery: Sleeve to Gastric Bypass-Need Help
PerezL84 posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I am 36years old and after almost 7 years post-op from my sleeve surgery, I've gained ALL the weight back over the course of these years. I know..how? Well, I had two jobs and school and no time for "myself." Managing all three of these commitments, I also started by old eating habits in eating junk food and fast food since there was no time for cooking and meal-prepping. So after my first visit, I asked my doctor if it was possible to get a re-sleeve. He discouraged me and said he strongly recommends a revision to the gastric bypass. I am a little nervous since I've heard so many things from my friends about malnutrition, having to randomly use the bathroom any type you eat, and possible depression. Not sure if anyone here can help me in making this decision. I have a meeting with my doctor on July 7th and I want to be ready to tell him with confidence that I am ready to have a revision to the Gastric Bypass. Please tell me what should I be expecting, any concerns, any questions that I should raise? -
100% REGRET THIS SLEEVE GASTRECTOMY
Jerzeegurl0815 replied to IM.ON.MY.WEIGH.DOWN's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Sorry to hear your story. I just revised from band to sleeve on 8/12. I had my band for 9 years and I also had a hiatal hernia. What was slated as a 90 minute surgery took 3.5 hours. Recovery with my band was simple, I got the surgery on a Thursday, was at an Easter egg hunt on Sunday and started a new job that following Tuesday. I expected similar pain...boy was I wrong! I am 6 days out and I have been up walking...not strenuous, but about a mile at moderate speed. I have been getting about 40-60 grams of Protein in via shakes, hi-protein chicken broth, hi-protein Jello, and Isopure--by far the jello goes down the easiest and thinner liquids hurt. My problem is sudden, shooting pains in my sides and my groin. It feels like a cramp, but doesn't tense and then ease it is just tense....heating pad helps some and I have been popping Gas x and prescription heartburn meds. What are theses sharp pains and when will they subside? Sometimes the belly binder helps and sometimes hurts. My stomach looks like I am 6 mos prenant and was even asked such when in the grocery store! I do not regret my decision, I just want to get moving...please advise. P.S. My post-op follow-up is Thursday and I still have a drain in place. -
What Would You Do If Something Happened To Your Band?
elcee replied to spoiltmom's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I think I would probably revise to a sleeve.I would not want to be without something to help me keep the weight off. I know many people say that they have changed their eating habits enough to be able to keep the weight off and if they can manage this then I really admire them. For me getting a band had nothing to do with not knowing what I should/shouldn't be eating. I have always eaten healthy food and I eat the same food now. I have never really eaten eat deep fried food, very rarely go to a fast food joint, do not load my food with butter or cream or anything like that. For me the band has always been about controlling hunger. Without the band I know that my hunger would come back and that I would be unable to only eat the small quantities that i need to eat to be able to maintain my loss. I know this because I am in the process of having my band slowly refilled after a problem about 2 months ago. I have no restriction and it is awful. I am constantly hungry. I eat what I should do and it "doesn't even touch sides"! I can finish a meal and still be hungry. I am hungry in-between as well and I hate it, I have not felt like this for almost 3 years. I often wonder how many of those that have their bands removed and do not opt for a revision actually do manage to keep their weight off. I am sure there are very few if any, it is not something that they are likely to come back to LBT and report though is it! -
Great to see such positive responses; thank you all! After 2 LB friends have successfully revised to a sleeve, I am more and more interested in revising! Hate my band! Do sleevers PB like banders do? Man that's horrible!

VSG to Bypass (RNY) due to stricture and hernia
catwoman7 replied to 2B2B_2bs's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I'm not a revision patient, but I just wanted to say with the exception of iron (some people don't absorb oral iron well and have to have iron infusions - although the vast majority of us absorb oral iron just fine), malabsorption is pretty uncommon as long as you keep on top of your supplements.
