Has anyone been getting headaches after they start their vitamins? I’ve had a bad headache for three days and the only consistency I’ve noticed as it’s been since starting my multi vitamin… I’m not getting in much protein either which may be it as well?? It’s awful and I had to break open my back up narcotics for the pain to be able to function

March 23 buddies yet?
Happy with two replied to ceri84's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi, i had bypass on March 10th in Ireland. I started out at 18.9 stone and I'm currently 14.2 stone/lbs. I can eat almost everything but in small potions. Bread.... no interest it doesn't sit well. I'm not tracking or probably not hitting my protein or fluid goals. Exercise just starting, walking and some sea swimming. But I'm so happy i took this step. So happy. -
New obesity meds in progress
Arabesque replied to GreenTealael's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
About 20 years ago I was prescribed the weight loss miracle pill: Reductil (sibutramine). It was great. Killed my appetite to the point I was eating once a day & I lost weight. But when I did eat I wasn’t interested in prepping good healthy meals. I must have been so lacking in necessary nutrients & vitamins. And I didn’t sleep - like only getting an hour or so a night for months. (Actually think it contributed to my developing poor sleeping habits which have only improved since my surgery.) when I went off the med my appetite came back as did my weight because I ate in the same way as I had before. Then came the news they were taking it off the market because of side effects they’d newly discovered - anal leakage, cardiac issues (strokes, heart attacks, etc.). Yikes. It’s why I worry about these medications. What happens when they stop taking them, what long term side effects are they yet to discover & what impact does the reduced food intake have on their general health & is that being monitored? Yes, we were on a reduced diet & many of us lost our hunger & appetite for a time after our surgery but we were also given guidelines to ensure we met nutritional needs & foods we should or shouldn’t be eating. We also had regular blood tests to ensure we weren’t low in anything & our health wasn’t being affected. All of which contributed to us changing our eating behaviours & helped us learn how to make better food choices. Those with diabetes who are on these meds would, I’d hope, already be aware of their nutrient needs & how to regulate their eating. But I understand some believe these medications are their their best/only option because they don’t want to or can’t have weight loss surgery. I just wish that when they’re given their prescription they’re also given a referral to a dietician, nutritional guidelines & their health is regularly monitored. Just my opinion. No judgement. We all do what we feel we have to do which is best for us & our lives. -
Antibiotics absorption and gastric bypass

My pharmacist said he’d have them in by the end of the week so we’ll see. 🤞🏻 A friend swears by the cream you rub on your thigh so I thought I’d ask my doctor about that if the shortage gets worse. Hadn’t heard about the vaginal cream as no one I know uses it. Thank you for the tip. Good to know about a couple of options. -
March 23 buddies yet?

Hey March buddies! Just checking in on everyone again! How's it going?! As for me, I'll start with the stats. 5'2", sleeved 3/24/23. I was 212 lbs. before pre-op diet, 199.7 lbs on surgery day. I'm now 3 months out and weighing 168.2 lbs for a total of 42.8 lbs lost (from 212). Been stuck here for a week or so. Things are definitely slowing down. Lost about 6.8 lbs this past month. BUT, I still haven't been exercising, like AT ALL. Not even walking. And I feel it. My energy is very low. I've got to get back to (at least) walking soon. I'd like to throw in some strength training too, as I feel like a weakling these days. I haven't been tracking my food. I just kinda mentally keep track of my protein and have a 32 oz. cup that I make sure I drink at least 2 of. I'm just starting to track my food and macros again. I don't feel restriction and have no issues with any foods. I even had some soda (just once) and it didn't bother me. I've had a glass of wine too and that was fine also. Anywho, hope you all are doing great! -

aww so sweet. my Kid brought me home a green smoothie ❤️ 290 calories for the cup. im currently still drinking it, but i figure i'll stop drinking at about 1/4 cuz i looked up the nutritional values on the company's website (see below) and its got waaay too much sugar for me to drink more than that in one sitting. Just goes to show ya, just because its green doesn't mean it's not a catalyst for dumping. From the company's website: lotsa sugar and so little protein. oopsies. -
Fourth of July grill out ideas?
ms.sss replied to Bananas4Bananas's topic in Regular foods (stage 4)
grilled veggies on a stick! eggplant, zucchini, asparagus, broccoli, sweet onion, carrots, portobello, sprinkle with some olive oil and spices and grill to caramelization! eat em off the stick, or toss em in a bowl with a drizzle of balsamic vinegar/glaze and some buratta or fresh mozzarella or firm ricotta and go to town. #yumYUMyum if you want a bit more protein, grill up some shrimp as well, or, my own personal fave: add some anchovies if eating out of a bowl (yes, i realize anchovies are not for everyone 😜) (yikes...now i just hyped myself into going grocery shopping for some veggies to grill...) -
High protein meal/snack ideas, Hair loss, overeating
LindsayT replied to Erin18's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Pinterest is a great place for recipes as well. When eating tuna/chicken/or egg salad, I don't normally eat it with anything. I want to keep the room in my stomach for the protein. To get fiber (and a little extra protein) with it, I like to add thawed frozen peas to my chicken or tuna salad. Maybe talk with your family about keeping snacks and other foods more hidden so they're not so tempting to get into. Another option is to make up your own snack boxes, so you can just pull them out. Maybe some reduced fat cheese and veggies, hummus and veggies, or whatever else you like. Meal planning (even out to eat planning) is so important for us. I have noticed that foods are way more unhealthy than we think. For example, our regular brand of pasta sauce has 16g of added sugar per serving (not to mention the added surger in a lot of food in the US), a small burger patty from a fast food place (no bun or condiments) is 280 calories, and carbs and salt are lerking everywhere in prepackaged and restaurant foods. For example, I got a cup of soup at Penara the other day and just looked at the calories when I ordered, once I tracked it in my app, it had over 2,000mg of sodium. Yikes! (Remember, track first) And I'm not scared of carbs, they just need to be the right carbs; however, they all add up. I try and stay under 60 carbs per day. So, I've learned to track before I put anything in my mouth, unless I know it meets the criteria that my dietitian has put me on. Sometimes, life happens and it's not always possible and none of us are perfect; it's really the effort we put in. Gosh, it's hard though. None of this is easy, I totally get that. And whoever said this was easy....well, I have a few words for them. I look at the surgery as a tool to help us fight back to get healthy and get our lives back, but it's still up to us to use it properly. (Not saying your not, it's more of a reminder for all of us). Again, I wish you all the best. -

I see my dietician in August along with my surgeon and I also will be getting bloodwork done. Thank you for the tips/suggestions. The 1200 calories was a day that I had. The example wasn't the 1200 calorie day. I'm gonna take out bread or if I want bread/bread type products, just have half. I don't eat bread related foods every day. I try to stay away from junkfood. Alot of the times it's always in my face and I live with family, I've mentioned before to put it in a place where it's not in my face. It's always usually on the counter. Right now, yogurt is still turning my stomach just of the thought about it, but hopefully I can add it back in my diet. I love cheesesticks, protein drinks with 20g of protein, jello I need to make some, been loving cherries lately and apples. Have to pick up some strawberries. Does anyone eat and then at the 15 minute mark they get sick of what they're eating? So you stop? I have some recipes for bariatric meals, I need to whip that back out and make a grocery list. Plus I also follow a lot of people on tik tok and youtube. I also need to get back to eating egg, tuna or chicken salad again. What do you eat it with? Vegetables? -

Antibiotics absorption and gastric bypass
Arabesque replied to MarisAthena's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I thought the same thing as @catwoman7 in regard to whether an antibiotic will be absorbed well or not would depend on where it is predominately absorbed. It’s the same with all medication & conversations with your surgeon & prescribing doctors are important to decide whether a change of tablet or formulation is needed after your surgery. After my gall surgery it was discovered I wasn’t absorbing protein well & then we realised I wasn’t absorbing my HRT effectively either. I’m now on a patch for HRT. (Tried to get my script filled today & none in stock - damn world shortage. Going to be some flushed, very cranky women about.) But I tell every doctor about my absorption issue if they are prescribing anything (which is very rare) just in case. Better to be getting the right & needed dose than not. -
liquid diet lunch options
Arabesque replied to Turch's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The well strained broths from wonton soup, pho, ramen, etc. are generally considered okay but do check with your team. It’s pretty hard to track the protein content though so it may be best not to rely on them. -

Struggling… the evil voice is back.

@ms.sss and @Fred in Pa, hear you both on the topic of addiction. I agree with Fred... addiction is sneaky. My brain will tell me "one piece of candy is not going to kill you" and then five pieces later, I start to feel the guilt sink in. I know 5 pieces won't kill me, but it's 100 calories more than I promised myself I would eat that day. Like @ms.sss said, addiction is a slippery slope. Right when you *think* you've beaten it, it comes crawling back out to remind you that you're not in as much control as you thought. Of course, this doesn't go for everyone. But it certainly goes for me. Someone above said, why eat carbs when there are so many healthy options out there? I swear to you, I don't wake up *wanting* to eat carbs. My brain starts rattling the cage with unbearable thoughts of eating. These thoughts invade the movie I'm watching or work I'm trying to get done. Why does my brain do this to me?? I don't know. As my brain runs the tin can along the bars, I find myself wishing I could just have some alcohol or SOMETHING to shut it up. But those things don't work, either. They're just another version of the addiction I've had to deal with all my life. These forums have helped me more than I can explain. Just being able to type out these words makes me feel a little less "broken" and a lot more human because I KNOW some of you will see me. ❤️ -

I absolutely love unsweetened vanilla almond milk. The downside is it doesn't have much protein. Until recently, I had not had cows milk in several years, as I've used almond, and even unsweetened plain for cooking, and no one was the wiser. -

it may look like mashed potatoes and beef with spices, but it's actually greek yogurt and dates...with spices lol. ever since someone on here mentioned they put black pepper on thier yougurt years ago, i have since preferred my yogurts to be more savory than sweet. i often put other "uncommon" stuff on my yogurts: roasted garlic, carmelized onions, anchovies, cucumbers, bacon, olive oil.. 228 calories for this one. ate it all. -
I am only one month into my 6 month pre op program. I finally got to speak with my nurse that knows the ins and out of insurance. She said I don’t have to lose a certain amount of weight, which I knew, but she said I can’t gain. I’m eating better, but I keep gaining and losing the same two pounds, and right now I’m on my period, so I’m sure that has a lot to do with it, but do they not take into account water retention and genuinely things that aren’t really within our control? I only drink water and I sweeter decaf tea. I drink 64 oz a day. Plus my protein shakes. I am just terrified if I go in and I’ve gained even an oz, they’re going to kick me out of the program, even if I’ve been losing up until that point. I’m struggling mentally with all of this. Anybody have any advice or word to calm my nerves? You all have been wonderful in answering all of my questions. I have Indiana hip plus ( Medicaid) if that matters.

So, it’s been a weekend. I’m in AL so the heat and humidity are insane. Yesterday we went to see the Savannah Bananas. I stood in the blazing sun and heat for almost 2 hours before we could go through the gates. I was close to passing out. Finally got to our seats and immediately had the hubs find me some water. I poured some on a napkin and even down my bra 😂 Don’t judge. Lol. Thank goodness our seats weren’t in the sun. After I was out of passing out phase hubs went and found me some shaved ice which was amazing. There was no food there I could eat, so I had snuck in a protein bar and it was melted and I ate 2 bites and was good until 730. Today ran some errands. Had one egg over medium for breakfast. Protein shake for lunch. Then decided to take a walk at the state park. Again SO hot. Did almost a mile but it was just too hot. Came home had a Popsicle and figuring out dinner. I made hamburgers out of some ground sirloin. I made me a patty of under 2oz and put half a slice of American on it, and a tablespoon of baked beans. Didn’t finish it and so far, my stomach is good. Yay meat! 🤣 -
High protein meal/snack ideas, Hair loss, overeating
Tomo replied to Erin18's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
No hair loss with the sleeve. Post revision to RNY (for gerd), I experience quite a bit, about 6 months of it. Started late too like 5 months in. If you aren't meeting your protein requirement, just swap some of your junk food for something healthy with protein. If that is too difficult, then try to have a little protein with each meal to help fill you up. For example, if you eat chips, add a string cheese to that meal. I think a bariatric therapist may be able to help with the junkfood cravings if you have access to it. Since you are still in the honeymoon stage, that may help you for the future when the appetite comes roaring back. -

I have been mind craving pasta so I bought some Banza chickpea spaghetti noodles. Haven't tried them yet but the protein content is 11g for a 2oz serving and 190 calories. Have you tried these anyone? I also bought a handheld spiralizer to try making noodles from veggies. I see so many recipes on YouTube that look soooo good, but the real question is do these alternatives really taste good??? -
I know that theres not many options wghen surgery was just a week away but I'm sick of boullion and none broth. Is egg drop soup ok strained by chance?

Yesterday’s food (only the things I took pics of but there were other foods throughout the day) Parfait w/peach, blueberries and strawberries & Salmon pate w/ crackers, baby lettuce and baby carrots (ate about half) Total calories for the day was about 1600. I never track total calories anymore but I often spot check certain meals to see how much protein I’m getting. It was wild to see that I tracked about 60g protein but over 100g carbs. I’m not limiting carbs by any means but the fiber content was well below 28g so I know I could have made better choices (I’m look at you muffins and biscotti 😂) -
And so it begins...day 1 of my pre-op liquid diet...
SleeveToBypass2023 replied to SleeveToBypass2023's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Ok, so day 4 sucks, too. But mostly because I have headaches, dizziness, and major fatigue. I'm only getting around 600 calories per day, which at almost 14 months out from my original surgery, is a problem. But there's nothing I can do about it. I drink 3 shakes per day, unsweetened tea, protein water, eat sugar free popsicles (for the calories at this point), and sugar free jello. I'm over the "omg I want foooood" part, but now it's the side effects of not enough calories. UGH.... I'll be glad when I get this surgery and can heal and move on already!!! -

LindsayT replied to Erin18's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I like roasted edamame and chickpeas for a crunchy snack once and a while. They are a bit calorie dense but healthier than chips. They also give you a boost of protein (especially the edamame) and fiber. Low fat/ fat-free high protein yogurt is a great choice. Low fat cheese (I like the babybel). Raw veggies with dip. The dip you'll make is fat-free plain Greek yogurt and dry ranch dressing powder to taste. Great snake and another source of protein. For a treat, bryers ice cream makes a carb smart version that's pretty tasty, i get the fudge bars, which are around 60 calories, but limit that. Sugar-free pudding, jello, and popsicles are better. Another tasty treat is sugar-free redi whip with strawberries. Eggs are great for breakfast and so versatile: add a bit of reduced fat cheese or turjey sausage or low fat ham, make a crustless quiche, or boil; the ideas are endless. Tuna/chicken/egg salads are great for lunch or a quick dinner; just mix with low-fat mayo and whatever else you like. When I make them, I do enough for a few days and have lunch already made for the next day or two. If you do decide to eat pasta or rice, opt for whole wheat or protein pasta and brown rice on occasion. We had Italian the other night, and I literally only had 1/4 a cup of whole wheat rigatoni with my protein and sauce, and that was way more than enough. I ended up only eating half of my dinner (about a third to a half cup and finishing it a couple hours later for a snack). Leftovers are a great option for lunches and sometimes breakfast. I find that I plan those better/healthier than my other meals. I agree with some of the other suggestions, such as talking to your dietitian. They can offer you specific guidance and support. Another idea to try is therapy to understand why you are making the choices you are. It may only be 1200 calories, but the choices are poor with poor nutrients. Us RNY folks need to be on top of our nutritional game between food choices and vitamins and supplements. The habits you are building now will stick with you and may lead to an undesirable outcome in the future. I wish you all the best moving forward.
