    June 2022 surgery buddies

I had Bypass surgery on June 21st. I’m feeling great and have a lot of energy.
  2. I had gastric bypass at age 56. I started at 373 lbs and got down to a low of 138. Have since put on a few lbs (which is very common after you hit your lowest weight - most people have a 10-20 lb rebound), but then my weight stabilized. Have been pretty stable ever since.

    Worried about eating

Don't worry, you'll be fine. If it makes you feel better not every doctor even has their patients do the liquid phase - I was sleeved in 2016 and then had bypass revision in 2021 and both times I was eating real food the day I left the hospital, starting with scrambled eggs, egg salad, chicken salad, tuna, refried beans, etc. and no issues at all.

Over 40 AND BMI over 50 - need inspo!

I was 45 when I had Gastric Bypass. I weighed about 1/4 ton over what I should. I lost all my excess weight and then some. My proudest achievements are that I've run 5 marathons. I got to run across the Golden Gate Bridge, with a broken rib but that's a story of it's own. I've gone horseback riding on vacation which was a dream of my spouse's. I've kayaked on vacation also. All things I never even dreamt of doing. My dreams pre-op were more basic: Bathing in a bathtub. With my spouse. Rolling over in bed without the 3 step roll. Not breaking chairs. Going from 6x to no x's. I'm able to buy clothes off the shelf. From not flying to flying in coach. To having to choose restaurants that had strong chairs, to sitting anywhere including booths, chairs, folding chairs. At this point it's hard to remember everything. I would have thought this impossible and would think anyone saying this was simply boasting, but here I am. Don't get me wrong, there have been downsides... They don't come to mind, but they've been there Good luck, Tek

    How to cheat

I was never faced with a multi course tasting menu until I was well into living with Gastric Bypass long-term. Pre-op it never appealed as my family was about volume over quality. I've since faced down the multi-course tasting menu with style and aplomb, generally by not worrying about my rules. No matter what happened volume would sooner or later become an issue. Sipping during meals has always been something I was more than willing to do. I usually took a taste of most courses unless it simply did not appeal. Unless a course was just the bees knees I didn't take more than two or three bites, I'm not gonna waste that all important space on something that was not worthy of it. There was usually one or two courses that were just that good to merit in depth exploration. Often it came down to "Let's make a deal"... Would you like to finish this course, or wait for the next course which has a cream sauce your sure to love, or this course that has lobster just the way you love it, or this later mystery dish later that will be something new? At any rate, we all have our approaches and our deals with ourselves and the devil. I just don't dance with the devil that often. Good luck, Tek

  8. I had a lap-band placed in 2014 and failed and now I am seeking a revision to sleeve. Any recommendations for a self-pay dr in North Florida that does revisions?
  9. Hey everyone!  It has been a while since I was on here.  I had a lap-band placed in 2014 but now I would like it revised to a gastric sleeve.  There are no drs here in Tallahassee (Florida) that do that and I need to go the self-pay route (my insurance will not cover it!)  Any recommendations on nearby doctors that do self-pay revision surgeries?

    2 Weeks Post op

Yes ma'am! Our bodies/bellies are weird now. I don't know what surgery you had but I had bypass. I have been lucky and pretty much able to eat anything but still sometimes something gets me. For example, I can eat chicken. Any kind.. cooked any way you can imagine but I can't eat cold. I have tried twice and was sick for hours. Just have to learn as we go and if it is something important enough you can always try again a few weeks/months later.
  11. I am scheduled for revision from sleeve to rny on Aug 10th. My question is, how soon is it safe to travel? I am scheduled for a long driving trip about week 7 post surgery. (Trip was scheduled months before gettin insurance approval and surgery date.) I plan on taking frequent breaks and overnight stops as well as sharing driving responsibilities. Is there any real concerns as long as I follow diet and fluid intake protocols? I recovered quickly after my sleeve surgery, but I have no idea what to expect with the revision. Did any of you travel soon after surgery? Sent from my SM-T500 using BariatricPal mobile app
  12. 35. Bypass in May 2021, 120 lbs lost. One of the best decisions ever. Best of luck to everyone!
  13. Ok so it’s been 6 months already and my periods are soooo painful! I literally had to quit my job cause I can’t deal with it during my days . Is it normal? Every time I’m on my period I feel terrible! I’m very nauseous all the time, I get car sick, I feel bloated, really heavy periods, everything I eat makes me sick, I get migraines, I get dizzy, my body is in pain, I sometimes feel so weak I can’t even walk or get out of bed 😔 what is wrong with me is this normal?
  14. That tightness isn’t dumping, that’s your restriction. With dumping you experience cold sweats, heart palpitations, diarrhoea &/or vomiting, dizziness. It can last for hours. You’ll really know when you experience it. Sometimes when your restriction kicks in you can get the foamies but it’s more spitting up saliva & maybe regurgitating that last little bit you ate not vomiting everything you ate per se. Dumping occurs by eating something high sugar or high fat. Your restriction & foamies usually occurs not because of eating a specific food type but because you ate too much, too fast or something too dry or coarse. As I said in my earlier post it usually passes quickly after you bring up that last bite that caused the problem. Dumping is more common with a bypass & it isn’t as common with a gastric sleeve. You’re only a couple of months out so your tummy could still be pretty sensitive which resulted in vomiting. I used to get nauseous & vomit quite often in the morning … usually after taking my multi vitamin. ☹️ https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/dumping-syndrome/symptoms-causes/syc-20371915

My taste buds are weird now LOL

So I've some time to taste more stuff. Pineapple is super sweet and not tart anymore lol I just don't care for bacon, but I like sausage. I don't like ham, but I like porkchops. I don't care for avocado but love guacamole. Used to love steak, now it's just ok. Still like chicken (dark meat, now white). Can't do lettuce at all. Used to love cottage cheese and sour cream but they taste sour and almost rotten now. Have almost no tolerance at all for salt and sugar. I figured this kind of stuff happened with bypass, not the sleeve. It's really weird. And then there's my sense of smell. What is going on?? I smell things like stuff burning, poop, rotten stuff, etc. And of course, there's nothing there. And my sense of smell is so much more sensitive to the stuff that's actually there. My husband was changing the cat litter and the smell of the urine had me literally gagging (and it gets scooped twice a week and changed every Sunday. So it's not like it was horrible and nasty). The smell of my daughter's paints had me gagging. And the smell of house cleaning supplies just does me in. UGH. I hope this passes soon. It's horrible!!!!!!
  16. I had Bypass. I was hitting my water goal by my 2 week follow up. Protein took about 3 weeks and then fell back off at pureed foods so I had to readjust my eating schedule. Now I pretty much have it down pat, but I still can't hit my protein goal without 1 shake a day. I have tried a few times. My work day looks like this, weekends are the same but the time just shifts a few hours later: Wake up 530 Breakfast 6-630am: Shake @ 30g protein Drink from 7/730-11/1130am: At least 20 oz. Lunch 12pm: Depends on what I pack but anywhere from 12-20g protein Drink from 1-3pm: At least 20 oz. Snack (as needed for the protein boost from a lighter lunch) 330pm: Usually 5-10g protein like a string cheese Drink from 4-6ish pm: At least 20 oz Dinner around 6/630pm: Depends on what I pack but anywhere from 15-20g protein Drink from 7pm till bedtime: I go to bed early on week nights so not much at this time. I average 70g protein and 70oz water daily. At first I was annoyed because I was just constantly worrying about it and non stop drinking and eating. But now at a little over 3 months post op I can drink a 16 oz bottle of water in 30 minutes. So if I get behind I can (kinda) chug it to catch up or if I am on track I can just take a break and not worry about it. You really do just find your new routine, it just might take some time. I am VERY motivated to make the best of this so I pushed myself very hard int he beginning to start hitting those goals.

    Really this many pills!?

That seems a bit excessive. After my bypass I was told to take one multivitamin with iron in the morning, and then 500 mg calcium citrate twice a day after that. The pills I have are 300 so I take 2 at lunch and 2 at dinner. Everything was fine on my last blood test.

Trying to get out of my head....

It’s like we share a brain, I swear. I went over 600 calories yesterday and the mental beat down I gave myself was horrible. Even though I burned 400 calories with exercise that same day. 🤦‍♀️ I had the sleeve first in 2017 and truthfully should have been diagnosed with some sort of restrictive eating disorder. I’m trying to be better about it this time with my revision but old habits have emerged. My nutritionist says calories for the day are not important, that I need to only stay around 60g protein, under 35 carb, and under 30 fat amounts. I am trying to get on board with her way of thinking. I personally benefit from a therapist because my issue is with control because of trauma background. Not a Bariatric therapist, just A therapist. Because it’s not about the food. It’s about my control and fear issues. I am practicing intuitive eating, but I don’t know if it would help you since I think you’ve said you feel hunger quite often. I don’t, so eating when I feel hungry has helped me since my body doesn’t usually talk to me unless it needs something 🤷🏼‍♀️ I’ve also spoke with my team’s psychologist a few times. If your team has one that could work. Wish I could be more help. But I’m afraid all I’ve offered is a “you are NOT alone” vibe.
  19. I’m just starting my revision journey and I’m off my sleep and depression meds. -40lbs so far. I still have social anxiety and a scrip for that. I think seeing I have what it takes to get healthier (again) has changed my mindset. I still have down days, but I’m very pleased a daily med is not necessary anymore. Moving my body definitely gives me the endorphins I need to keep motivated. I find my joy in other things now. Thankfully things that don’t involve the couch or fridge. 😌 Although I agree with above poster, meds can be necessary and it’s no shame if they are!
  20. I'm about 5 weeks post-op and struggling to get 64 oz of water in plus 60g protein (60-80 is the goal in my program for right now). I'm curious about other folks who had gastric bypass - how long did it take you to get to your water and protein goals? I can get to 60g protein but only at the cost of my liquids. I feel too full and uncomfortable. I'm supposed to be shifting to soft foods but find that I can't get enough pureed in to stop using shakes. I have an endoscopy scheduled this week to see if there is a stricture but in case there isn't, I'm wondering how others' healing timelines went. Luckily, even though I feel really full, I haven't had any vomiting - but the constipation is real, even though I measure my liquids out and sip constantly. Thanks in advance for your experiences!
  21. I won’t add to what the others have said. As you know you didn’t make the best decision & you know it was because your head cravings were too strong. And you are likely emotional & stressed post surgery & you were seeking something that always comforted you. You aren’t the only one to experience this. The head battles are the hardest part of this process. It’s why many seek the support of a therapist & swear by them to help them navigate these battles. Reach out to your medical team for a reference. Better to start working on the head stuff sooner than later. What you are experiencing may be your first dumping too which is more common with bypass. Never pleasant & experiencing it is often enough for you to avoid high sugar/high fat foods in the future. https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/dumping-syndrome/symptoms-causes/syc-20371915 Be careful & take care of yourself.
  22. Hi, I had bypass surgery on 18th of May and have been struggling since. I am having trouble with food, most food to be honest. I get a stuck feeling in my chest, sometimes it comes up sometimes it doesnt. It burns as it is going down and I dont know why. I have followed the rule and transitioned from clear fluid, fluid, puree, soft and now solids Some days I can eat a cracker and cheese, other days I cant get down mashed pumpkin. Its frustrating and i'd like to know if anyone else has these issues. I'm having issues with the toilet as well which is causing me pain in my left side and bloating in my tummy. Any help or advice is appreciated because i'm in all sorts of pain
  23. I went to Mexico to have my gastric bypass done. Dr. Almanza was my doctor. The cost was $4999 but they gave you a $300 discount if you paid cash. I also had to pay for airfare to San Diego. I thought he was a great doctor and the staff was great and I stayed in the hospital the whole time.

    Pre-op diet query

Hi all! I have a question that I just need input on until I’m able to reach out to my nutritionist or surgeon. I think I messed up!!!! I’m on day 5 of my 7day pre-op diet. The first 5 days consists of tons of water and SF electrolytes, 3 protein shakes , 1-2 boiled eggs, cottage cheese or low-fat string cheese, a lean protein meal with non-starchy veg and non- starchy veggies, SF jello, SF popsicles and broth as snacks or to quell hunger pangs. Think Keto and in fact I have reached ketosis (i have that telltale fruity, albeit, rotten apple flavor in my mouth for 2 days and I have test strips that confirm because I once tried to follow the keto diet). The last two days are protein and then clear liquids. So here’s the thing my mind was set on “keto, keto, keto” and I completely flubbed and ate some raspberries this morning!!!! Raspberries are keto approved but….. I don’t know if they are pre-op gastric bypass approved!! I’m tail spinning. I think I totally messed up! Input please! Thank you!!
